    15:55 The flying skaven in the top right. His name was Rattus Maximus. He grew up in the warrens of Skavenblight. As a young rat he had a dream. A dream that one day, he would become an (under)world famous singer. The other rats mocked him and beat him up but he never gave up his dream. Rattus Maximus went to war with the skaven many times, and always survived because he knew he couldn't die before his dream was fulfilled. He would find secluded caverns, and sing. The echoes amplifying his scrawny voice. In his mind, he was above all else, an artist. One day however, he was forced to go on another campaign under the threath of torture. This is the fight you are seeing here. Scroll up and hit unpause for a brief moment. Just like that... he is gone. I think this is the philosophical sub-text GW is trying to show us with the Skaven. We are all Rattus Maximus, trying to chase our dreams. To make them reality. To amount to something in life. Instead - we are wasting it writing and reading youtube comments. Don't be like Rattus Maximus. He will never sing his song, and if we keep procrastinating - neither will we.

    I'm a pretty average player. But I tend to use Skaven Arty, plague claws with warp cannons that are guard by Storm Vermin. Then a massive wall of clanrats and slaves to keep the enemy at bay. I then use slingers for a bit of ranged and some doomwheels to chew up anything that get's too close. It usually leads to massive casualties on both sides, but what's a Skaven victory if it's not pyrrhic?

    In campaign it made a big difference depending on the factions I'd be fighting, but usually a few Stormvermin (shields or halberds depending on how many archers they have) to hold the line long enough to get melted by purple globadiers and a mounted priest. 2 or 3 warpfire cannons to take out monsters and mounted lords quickly, one or two catapults to harass backline units, a doomwheel or two for quickly taking out archers then rear charging the front line, extra halberds if I think they are going to field a lot of cavalry. Early game was mostly fielding tons of clan rats with all the bonuses and surrounding everything

      Logan Stafford Little tip: The word repetition in Skaven-speak is only supposed to happen on some nouns, verbs, and adjectives. "Kill-kill", "Kill-slay", "Come, scribe-slave", "Die-die, stupid dwarf-thing!", "Come-come, Boneripper!", "Queek is great-mighty warlord of Clan Mors"; these are all correct.
      There's no hard rules on when to repeat words, and consistency isn't important, but the sentence should still be easily readable and not too long, since Skaven speak and act in quick, energetic bursts. Your sentences are good lengthwise, so don't worry about that part. :)
      Skaven don't repeat things like "to" or "for". That's a screw-up on CA's part, though they got the short bursts part down pat.

    I've been a Skaven fan since Shadow of the Horned Rat, and now in TWWH2, my Skaven build focuses as much as possible around artillery. Plagueclaw Catapults are armor-piercing and anti-infantry, and their projectiles are massive; two of them will tear apart the enemy's high-value units, rip up archers, and otherwise create a wild and merry havoc. This tactic is situational; a bargain-basement cavalry unit can pin or destroy any artillery without a problem and I wouldn't dare bring two catapults against other Skaven, but if I'm reasonably sure that they'll be able to use half their ammunition, or if I'm fighting someone very tanky and armored like Dwarves or Chaos, I definitely want to bring the 'pults.

    I'm currently playing Skaven and this is after trying out the elves. But I've started to bring like 4 catapults units into the fight because they wreck any archer units on the field. I also use these to target any group on the field that isn't engaging in any combat. For siege play I use them to just bombard enemies on the walls.
    So then I can just focus on powerful melee unit rosters and ignore all of the meat shields because honestly the meat shields die really quickly. For example those skaverns you can call out from underground. If they fought anything stronger than first normal melee unit they would be dead so quickly and run away that it wasn't worth the effort. So I just sent them after the enemies artillery.
    My main infantry force is Storm vermin, they are tough buggers and can fight all other normal melee units without much of a problem.
    Also love my 3 Warpfire throwers because when they do get in good shots at some army they rip them apart.
    So if you have the money to buy stronger melee units you really should do it. The meat shields will be entirely useless when the enemy have some stronger units in their army.

  • @Evoker42
    @Evoker42 5 лет назад +1

    A little tactic that I love utilizing now that Eshin is more formally in the game, is to have the line of expendables in the front with the rat ogres and plaguebearers do much as you've pointed out. the only trick is my flanks will have deathrunners and/or triads. Great for the stealth flank. Gutterrunners (poison) also are great for this or chasing off cav or skirmishers. If not just hitting the enemy's front line from the back with bits of poison if possible to bring. Mind you this is usually against the AI; but it works well in campaign. Especially against Wood Elves. Instead of bombardiers, I'll bring mortars.

    What about an artillery based build, bring 4 units of various artillery depending on what you will be facing, then bring 2 units of globadiers, again depending on what you might be facing, a unit of warpfire throwers, 1 or 2 doomwheels and a ton of slaves/clanrats.. basically, find a good elevated position and position artillery begin raining warpstone death on the enemy, use slaves/clanrats to stop/slow down enemy advance, then use the globadiers and warpfire throwers to mop up whatever is left.. the doomwheels are for additional protection as well as out flank flankers

    The Campaign build that I've been using with Skrulk:
    Skrolk
    Assassin
    4 Stormvermin with Halberds - 2 flanking on side
    4 Stormvermin with sword/shield (center line)
    3 Plague Monk censer bearers
    2 Poison Wind Globadiers
    2 Death Wind Globadiers
    2 Plague Claw catapults
    1 Lightning Cannon
    This might vary up with swapping out a censer bearer for a Deathrunner, Gutter Runner with poison slings, or abomination.
    Generals to the center of the army.
    _ _ x x x x _ _ (Stormvermin Halberds _ Sword/Shield x )
    / / / (Plague Monks / )
    o ++ o ( Poison Wind o Death Wind + )
    * & * (Plague Claw * Lightning Cannon & )
    Artillery bombards.
    Front line can take the abuse with Plague Monks and Globadiers proving point defense to shut down breakthroughs and add extra damage where needed.

    i've been using more artillery focused builds in the campaign but was interested in figuring out a way to effectively field some slaves in additional armies to keep cost down and here I have it. I will probably keep a few pieces of artillery instead of rat ogres to soften up incoming targets and maybe poison wind glob's for anti large. thanks for the guide very informative.

  • @fictionman7558

    I like fielding 3 or 4 artillery units and surrounding them with slave spears, some missile support, and a couple of stormvirmin halberds, this tactic can be used for most factions of course but the whole number advantage with skaven takes it to a new level.

    hey zerk been doing a few builds in campaign with lord skrolk but since i started with vampire counts i was working the same way but with skaven but watching this video again you woke me up and myself aswell when i tried going high quality vs dwarfs and lost many stormvermin thanks to not having skaven slaves to sacrifice seems like skaven to me are the most versatile race in total war warhammer because they can do ANY army type comp but you stressed something important: they are a horde faction (not simply a rush faction) so they must attack and kill fast and the horde formation was unknown to me

  • @stefanski48

    I know this comment is coming in late but ill still post it for anybody still looking to play skaven in the warhammer 2 campaign. This build is mostly for clan mors and clan pestilens as they constantly fight the lizardmen however it can be made to work for clan rictus as well. I've played every faction in warhammer 2 on legendary difficulty. So far I have only won my high elves campaign but I have done well with skaven as well. Starting things off you have 20 slots for units to field in an army minus the general which will usually be your legendary lord in campaign so that puts us at 19. I like to work my way from the rear to the front line. The build is as follows:
    4 warplightning cannons (swap 2 out for plagueclaw catapults as needed depending on enemy faction and army composition)
    2 poisonwind globadiers
    2 deathglobe bombardiers (swap out for 2 additional poisonwind globadiers as needed if the enemy brings lots of large as the lizardmen like to do on legendary)
    2 stormvermin sword and shield
    7 stormvermin halberds (swap 3 for stormvermin sword and shield as needed based on what the enemy faction is and army they are bringing, more halberds if your fighting many dinos)
    Lastly, 2 hellpit abominations (swap for 2 doomwheels if enemy lacks spears, and/or swap one out for additional any unit previously listed as needed for less micromanaging. It's much easier to micro 1 hellpit abomination than 2. Recommend 1 and an additional stormvermin for people still getting the hang of skaven)
    I know hellpits are anti large but you will lose 1v1 to a dino on legendary. Warplightning cannons are of utmost importance versus dinos.
    Thanks for reading the build I know it's long but skaven have massive unit variation. Good luck in the campaign or custom battle if gold isn't an issue.

    My personnal clan pestilan built (I smash everything with it):
    - Lord Skrolk
    - Assassin
    - Warlock Engineer
    - 2 X Stormvermins
    - 6 X Plague Monks Censer Bearers
    - 3 X Death Globe Bombardiers
    - 3 X Plague Claw Catapult
    - 3 X Warp Lightening Canons
    Strategy: very artillery / defensive oriented. Let them come. From long range destroy large units (with canons) and cripple infantery (with catapults). Finish the rest with Monks.

    I like a similar build to Ninjahund, but with globadiers/warpfire in the center, without anything in front. I put them in 2 close columns with something to disrupt an engage between, in the sense of left flank, 2xglobe/fire, 2 or 3x slave or stormvermin, 2xglobe, right flank. I also like 1 or 2 plagueclaws in the back to keep routed units going or soften up infantry. This build can mean you will use your spawned units more defensively for the ranged units. Only campaign tested though.

  • @Razielts1

    and then my plans for the future were to specialize the armies depending on enemy race: lizardmen they got great holding infantry with scary dinos that simply buldoze through frontlines so what do i do? go full ranged army like you referred death globadiers poison globadiers and warpfire throwers with many summons to delay the enemy while the clanrats hold so the rest can kill the enemy dinos and if i get flanked i'd have a hellpit abomination with spears to block them and doomwheels to kill enemy range

    Nice Video as usual! Easy to follow guides and spot on commentary! Keep up the great content!
    For builds: I like to leave out the artillery and go for a more mobile Build. Skrolk can be a real pain in mp with his 2 summon abilities and the massive aoe. Back him up with an assassin(or 2 if you expect alot of Monsters. 2 assassins will take out any dino if managed well) My front line is normaly clanrats or clanrat spears, or plague monks on the side some flanking skavenslave spears and gutter runners with poison. Esential are also the 2 doomwheels and one or two death runners wich make short work of any armoured units... Thats basically it:) ps: the only time I skill different is against the damn Lizzards. Then stormvermin with halberds and hellpits will replace the doomwheels and nightrunners.
    Still finetuning... Warhammer 2 is the best total war has been in MP since medieval! I am loving the fast paced, build based battles!!

    I just started my first Skaven ME campaign a few days ago, with very little experience in this game, so thanks a lot for this guide :) due to certain skills on Queek and research into clanrat buffs that, in combination, allow me to use Queek to recruit rank 7+ Clanrats fairly early in the campaign, I mainly use Clanrats, supported by 2 units each of gutter runners and poison wind globadiers, a warp cannon, 2 plague claw catapults, Queeks 2 starting units of stormvermin and a plague priest (using max number of Menace from Below and plague priest spell vermintide allows for up to 13 more units of those buffed clanrats to be summoned, and the priest can debuff enemy armor pretty well too). so far fought battles against lizardmen, other skaven, orks and dwarfs and did pretty well (losing between 40-60% of my numbers each battle, but have won most of them, and that's what counts for skaven, right?). as for playstyle, I tend to play defensively early on, so that my artillery has time to work. Also, as soon as I can afford it, I plan to replace the gutter runners with those warp flamethrower guys and replace 2 of the clanrats with rat ogers. I am curious, though: which is better on the field, a low to medium ranked unit of stormvermin or a rank 9 unit of clanrats? (essentially I am wondering how much those ranks actually matter in improving a unit above ist base version)

    • @Zerkovich
      @Zerkovich  7 лет назад

      Unit ranks can be pretty powerful. But imagine Stormvermin rank 9... Far superior to Clan Rats of course. The biggest thing about it though is that the price doesn't change. So Clan Rats will be cheaper to run.

    • @clefsan
      @clefsan 7 лет назад

      yeah, but it takes time and battle experience for my stormvermin to rank up, whereas I can recruit Clanrats with already high rank (so far I've been using Queek to recruit all my clanrats and then transferred them to armies of my other Lords as needed). I was curious if the stat differences from being different units (clanrats vs stormvermin) would outweigh the bonuses gained from rank difference. example: how would a rank 3 stormvermin compare to a rank 9 clanrat? that highly ranked stormvermin are much better than any kind of clanrat is pretty much a no brainer, I suppose ;-) anyway, thanks for taking time to answer my question(s) :)

  • @vegetation99
    @vegetation99 7 лет назад

    I like using a front line of slaves, second line of stormvermin w/halberd, third line with plague catapult and some poison globes, 4th line with clanrat spears. however the 2 key units are the lord(either caster w/the dreaded thirteenth spell, and a plague priest on his mount. General idea is to send forth the plague priest and attack as much infantry as possible, preferably high tier. then cast the 13th spell on your priest to kill as much of the enemy inf as possible. shouldnt be too difficult to clean up the rest.

    4 skaven shields (doesnt matter what kind), 4 plague monks, 2 halberds, 3 rat ogres, 3 warpfire throwers, and 3 catapults. Make sure to upgrade your skaven shields as they are your frontline/meat shield. I use this build mainly offline. This build is best for a defensive position and thats pretty much all i use it for. Set up your skaven shields as far as possible and do the same for your plague monks right behind them, then put a halberd on either side, put 1 ogre on either side and save one as a flanking unit or to cover your catapult, and set up your warpfire throwers wherever you want its never really mattered when I use this build. Let the enemy come to you and use the halberds/ogres to flank once theyre on top of you.

  • @Razielts1

    so i've been doing it like VC so here goesmy low-mid tier army that i use for every race is as such: 4 clan rats 2 spears for frontline but after rewatching your guides i started doing 4 CR 2 plague monks and spears have a few reserves (no flank) and skaven slaves as the first wave usually 2 and 2 skaven slave spears to bog up the enemy while i use 2 plague claws and 2 warplightning cannons to rek them before they get to me and use skaven slaves to delay the enemy advance to the max along with the clanrat race summon before using my main line to attack because with that reasoning the enemy army will be tired to fight the main line and since skaven get tired fast they will have the damage to kill the enemy because they are fresh and i would flank if the opportunity showed itself

    My builds are often the same as yours, Zerkovich, except that I like to make sure ALL of my Skaven Saves have spears just in case the enemy deploys his Large units on the wrong side. I don't use Slave Slingers much, preferring the Nightrunners with poison. However, there is something to be said for quantity over quality, especially when fighting the AI

  • @Razielts1
    @Razielts1 6 лет назад

    and the last army comp i thought about would be good vs rush armies: use a strong stormvermin/monk frontline use a hellpit to tank any flanks and have an assassin team for example gutter runners would lure a part of the enemy army to a location where death runners would be waiting with gutter runner slings and a few slaves to block charges and when they were done they could envellop the rest of the enemy cuz i noticed it can work when i fight with a garrison i usually build the frontline and wait use slaves to tire the enemy down before meeting the main line and at the same time gutter runners lure 2-4 enemy units away from the main army and kite them with shurikens either delaying them long enough for the rest to die and then finishing them off or kiting them long enough that when they run out of ammo they win the melee cuz the enemy is exausted from running after them
