Looking forward to trying this out Kathryn. Definitely my thing I’m discovering. It’s been such an interesting journey with you this year trying different things but I realise I’m less keen on fancy complicated work that requires too much thinking and/or measuring (don’t mind a little) and prefer more intuitive work. Thank you for presenting us with such a wide ranging palette of options. Such enjoyment travelling this road.
Interestingly I’ve found a slow stitching group half an hour’s drive away and it’s great to meet like minded enthusiasts in person as well as all your lovely followers online. 🥰🤗

I heard an artist give this answer to "how long did it take?" -- "my whole life. It took every experience to lead me the moment of completing this piece."
Our think our society has become so obsessed with time and doing things quickly. Yet, at the same time, we put more value on things that take a long time to do. Lots to ponder about this.

I am close to caught up, but I needed to express my sudden joy! I did the couching way back, but oh my.... I started this project and absolutely fell in love. I'm creating organic (one of our favourite words 😂), wiggly, layered, crazy couching and I just love it to bits. Decided to couch mostly teensy fabric strips plus some variegated wools and it looks so awesome! Thank you so much for this particular prompt, Kathryn ❤ I've found my new obsession 😮

“There is a new minimalism that is concerned with the touch of the maker. The materials lead and then the process itself is the source of poetic resonance.” Judith Martin

Kathryn - I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your weekly slow stitch projects. 2024 has not been one of my (or my families) best years so far and being able to participate in your weekly projects with my sister has been a life saver. I wake up every Monday morning so excited to find out what our adventures for the week will be. I have completed every project and when my time allows I plan to go back and revisit your Wonky Wednesdays. I do not do Facebook so am unable to join your Facebook group. I am sure there are many reasons for that question and certainly admiration of your/our dedication and stamina is often one reason AND I have also experienced it as a very judgy query.

Week 32 - Inspired by Judy Martin.
"Not to know, but to go on" ~Judy Martin
Thank you for introducing us to this amazing stitcher. I will be sure to explore the links, too.
I giggled at your loo story🙃
When you talked about the decisions you make when stitching with other people versus when stitching alone, I find that to be the case in my art. When I do art online in my streams, I find myself very influenced by comments and suggestions. Most of the time, it leads me down a path I would not have taken on my own. It sort of takes on a collaborative process. I think when I do my art on my own, the work is much more intuitive.
Just listening to your chat about the Festival of Quilts inspires me to seek out some local shows. Most of the quilting around here is most likely machine stitched quilts. But I think it would be interesting to hear local quilters talk about their quilts.
This page is another technique I think I could do - I am still stitching on the Shisha piece. I did not like my Shisha stitching at first, but the more I put on it, the better I like it. I am happy to hear others struggled with the ladder stitch.
Stitch mark making, doing same thing in different ways; trying different techniques
Stitchhand, a way of stitching that is unique, personal, and natural to you, like your handwriting.
    Daily practice, hummm.
    Empty couching stitch, hummn.
    Rune stitching??
    Will need to try these
I'm not sure you can tell, but I have begun to type out my comments in a notepad while I am listening to you, so they tend to get lengthy by the end of the video. It is almost like I am sitting here chatting with you in person. Also, I have a written document, which I think will also go in my stitch journal when it finally gets bound.
Watching you stitch your page in your book, inspiration hit!! I might try inserting my piece between two pages with a window cut through the center, so both sides show, one side on each page. Yes I might try it.
This has truly been an interesting year so far.

It is interesting to think about why we want to know how long something took. For me I wonder if it is part of a habit of thinking how much I want to , or have to, squish into one day. But now, via a combination of being in post-Covid fatigue for over a year, and retiring a year ago, I have mostly managed to free myself from that. It is a whole new country! (Just to be clear, I am not ill anymore, just in whatever this is now, well enough to mostly do what I want with a day, which is a blessing I appreciate all the more for having been much more limited for a long time.)

Nice homage to Judy Martin! At first I thought, I haven’t heard about her in a while, then started getting confused because the work you showed didn’t look like the Martin’s work. But I thought, maybe she’s changed! So I Googled Judy Martin and got a few different websites (plus a professional wrestler by that name!😂) and finally sorted it out! It brought back memories of learning the quilting stitch. We were taught that even stitches were more important than size in the beginning. We were also taught to aspire to stitches of equal length on both front and back. I have finally achieved this for the most part.

@@cynthiawood2097 I also came across the wrestler when googling for the links to share. Definitely not the Judy I met 😂 the confusion with 'log cabin ' Judy Martin is why this Judy calls herself Judith e when she exhibits. 😉 I also learnt that when hand quilting, I think I achieved about 9 stitches per inch in the end. Although these days, I prefer to stitch bigger and bolder ❤️

I find I'm more interested in doing as Judy did with the piece she calls "not to know but to go on" rather than a reversible piece. I will be selecting fabric - maybe even one each day for this week - and couching them down with randomly or blindly chosen embroidery thread as a document of my days this week. I've done two quilts in a similar manner. One year I chose a strip of fabric to represent how I was feeling or what was happening that day and sewed them together in the pattern commonly called Chinese Coins. Another year I made a set of flying geese each week as a representation of what happened that week. I consider nearly all of my quilts reversible. 😊

I agree about the stitch-hand. I have been thinking about this recently, without having a name for it. Something about a natural periodicity of our hands, based on how our hands are unique to us, and then influenced slightly differently each time we stitch by the context, which might be our own internal state, or our thoughts, or what is going on at the time...

I think that people asking how long a thing took to make is maybe just a way of expressing their interest when perhaps they don’t know too much about the craft or technique. I’m sure I have unthinkingly asked it myself when really what I mean is “I admire your work, please tell me about it.”
Your Rapunzel story was priceless! I got locked OUT of my own loo yesterday! My grandsons had been visiting and it turns out that the six year old had figured out the mechanism on the outside of the bathroom door which allows the lock to be operated with a coin. He’d secretly locked it, didn’t say a word and it wasn’t until after they left and I needed a wee that I realised I was going to have to FIND a penny before I could spend one 😂

My nan was known as Nell or Nelly for her entire life. She even introduced herself as Nell. It was only in her last few years that she told us she didn’t like it and preferred her full name - Eleanor.
Your story of getting locked in the loo reminded me of a time it happened to me - in a pub! Someone got me a knife and I got myself out - my husband didn’t notice!

Runes are very intriguing to me and so I like that you use a "rune" stitch. I hope to incorporate it into a little piece. I have always found the question "how long did it take," to be frustrating. Sometimes the person asking doesn't know how else to compliment a hand crafted item and genuinely wants to show appreciation. My inner reaction though is that considering only one dimension (time) of handcrafting doesn't do the process or the item justice. I've been knitting and stitching since I was 10 years old and like to think I've acquired skills that contribute to whatever I am currently making. Your comments are prompting me to think of a more thoughtful but kind answer.

Maybe we could have a “Meditation Scroll Monday” where those who wish to can work on our scrolls together. Maybe we could use some of the techniques you’ve taught this year or stitch in whatever method(s) we choose. I can imagine some scrolls will be quite long while others might be a series of small scrolls on little spools. I personally am working on a scroll that is 8” wide as I found a beautiful wooden industrial sized spool in an antique shop. I also have a few dozen small wooden spools and I plan to begin little projects on them soon. Just a thought! 🥰 I look forward to seeing your video on Friday of the textile art exhibited. It takes as long as it takes, mostly. I put things down, I pick them up. Could work it an hour, a day, a week, before setting down again. Together, could take years, months, weeks, days, hours. I don't keep track, and as it is for the joy of it instead of profit, I find it easy to forget on purpose the time.
When someone asks, and they don't like the answer, I usually follow up that I don't take requests or commissions, which allows me that freedom. Then they act as if they hadn't asked that instead of asking, Oh would you make me one? But that is always an undercurrent of the asking of the time. Well, in my experience.

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales  3 месяца назад

Yes, that's another possible reason indeed for asking how long it takes. I am happy to be able to lose myself (and find myself) within the process, and lose track of the time. Maybe that's what I will answer the next time I am asked. Or perhaps I will gently and politely ask the questioner why they are asking. It's an interesting topic, and perhaps one I should explore further rather than just being a bit irritated by it. 😊❤️

Enjoying the video while knitting socks and I had made foot templates with thin cardboard and as I was cutting them out, I remembered you said you cut them out of pizza boxes and I was thinking that pizza boxes are very hard to cut through as they’re as thick as a regular cardboard box (here), and I thought about a story I read about an American woman who had moved to the UK and loved it except there was no pizza delivery and it occurred to me that you weren’t referring to pizza delivery boxes (thick cardboard) but frozen pizza packaging (thin cardboard), and so even though it’s apropos of nothing in the video (thus far, anyway), I wanted to ask if you have pizza delivery in France and/or the UK? Or just frozen pizza? For some reason, the idea of pizza delivery in France seems hilarious and sacrilegious but you never know until you ask.

I am sorry, it never occurred to me to clarify 😂 in French cities there must be pizza delivery but not in the countryside. There is a pizza van in the local town on the last Thursday of the month but you have to text the guy your order before midday then collect the pizza yourself. Plus it's not that great (at least to my taste) and it's very expensive (around 15 euros, which I think is about the same as dollars for a small pizza) . In the UK there is pizza delivery (all kinds of takeaways as well, Chinese, Indian, Thai, etc) unless you live really in the countryside and all the big chains, Pizza Hut, Pizza Express, Dominos etc.. 😁❤️

Ok, so I have another question: Do people in the UK frequently vacation at each other’s homes? I always thought this happened in Agatha Christie novels and historical dramas, but not as something people did now. I don’t think vacation is the right word, but it’s the only American equivalent I can think of, visiting someplace for a few days or a couple of weeks? Specifically having more than one friend staying with you, as opposed to a family member staying over or one friend over for a brief visit? I don’t know if I’m making any sense, I am just curious if this is common in Europe/UK and what it’s called? I can’t really think of an American equivalent, outside of extended family visiting for holidays maybe.

Without being consciously aware of it, we use language that reveals a long list of underlying assumptions. Things like "Time is money" or "Time is a limited resource". We say, for example, "time is running out" or "don't waste my time". When people ask, "How long did that TAKE?" the underlying assumption is that it consumed x amount of resources and therefore has y amount of value attached to it. Ergo, the question is about the product, not the process. It's hell in the head of a linguist!

A bit harsh. This sort of event has to be commercial, but it does give textile artists a platform to show their work, and to see in in the flesh is bar far better than in any publication. It also the “common folk”to be able to exhibit something that they have loved making. It doesn’t matter how it was made, as long as the process has brought pleasure.
