- This shotgun was also sold as the Sears 'Ranger' Model 30 & 31, and also sold by Montgomery Ward as the Model 30. This excellent John Browning designed shotgun was manufactured and sold for over fifty years. Now you can learn how to field strip this shotgun in just a few seconds.
Thanks for the info. I didn't know it was a takedown, of sorts. I have a 620-A and a Winchester 1200 hiding back in the safe somewhere that I bought and stashed away years ago. I'm now motivated to get out and exercise them.
Heck yeah, break out those shotguns and get them to the range. You can thank me later 👍😎
Thanks for the memories! I had a Wards Western Field in my youth. The break down feature impressed me so much that I bought the shotgun based on that. I had sold it over 30 years ago and forgotten about it, until now.
I just picked up an old Ward. I loved even before I knew that Browning designed it!
My grandfather gave me his version of the same gun. It's a Browning Montgomery Ward Western Field model 30, takedown, in 12ga. Has 26in bbl, (W/the bird dog in the receiver.) I LOVE mine. One awesome, old, slamfire shotgun!
Thanks for posting this! It's always fun to see the many different ways gun designers and manufacturers solved the problems of putting together a functioning machine.
I have to tell you how good of a video this is. My great grandfather left me a Ranger model 31 just like this one, only the barrel isn't shortened like yours. I really appreciate the video it came in handy last time I went to clean it. Great video!
Omg. I just picked up a 20g today. The gun shop owner did not know how to take it down. It was fun watching it fly apart as he showed me how awkward it was , hence the bargain price. Thankyou so, so much. That also explains why there is so much play in the barrel to receiver matchup.
Take care.
You are very welcome and I love reading comments like yours. You just made my day.....thank you!
@@mixup98 I really like old shotguns, model 12s are a joy to use and carry. The old ones somehow feel better in the hand.
Great video! I had the 520 humpback and since watching your video, picked up a 620 for just $100! Works great and shoots great. Thanks for sharing!
I was just admiring my Montgomery Ward Model 35 in 16ga , John Browning was a genius .
Thanks for the maintenance break down , I wasn't sure how to disassemble it.
Subscribed!
All models can also be slam fired: the shotgun has no trigger disconnector and shells can be fired one after the other simply by working the slide if the trigger is held down.
thats fuckin sick
Love it! I have a 1935 model that I inherited long ago from my great grandfather.
thanks for the video a friend of mine has this shotgun, really helped me to be able to completely overhaul it. the action jammed before, works smooth now.
Good gun designed by a good man, Moses himself you know it's gonna function and work in the field
great video grandfather left my father a 620 which is now mine had no idea how to dissemble until now thanks love this rifle very reliable and well built stays next to my bed every night
Grigori.. I half the exact same gun as you. My grandfather traded a mossberg for it when he was 14 years old to his neighbors down the street. I turned 16 in December and he brought it out and teary-eyed he said "well son I want you to have this, I've had it since I was younger than you are, be responsible and take care of it." I had never felt so honored and I use that gun every chance I get. I hope to have it for many many years to come
Great video! I snatched one in the Cabela's library for $100 last weekend. After some research it's made between 1912 and 1916.
Hi Wayne.....thanks for the great comment, and thanks for watching my video. Glad I was able to help.
You're welcome. I've always been amazed with John Browning's genius. Thanks for watching.
Hi Mixup Thanks for the video. It helped me open my older Sears Ranger 102 25 apart.
Thank you so much for posting this. I too have a hand me down 620. Ive had many shotguns, but with this one i have no fear of butt stroking something in the head with it. I intend to mod it back to the trench gun version, now if I can only find a bayonet.
Ray.....very glad I was able to help you with your friends gun. Thanks for a great comment and be safe and have fun.
Thanks! I have the 520A (Sear's Ranger in 12 ga.) and this was REALLY helpful!
Thank you sir, hope you continue to do good work.
Well I got it apart:):):).I sprayed "Hoppe's Elite" Gun cleaner and just cycled the action many times and and action bar are raised up.And now I have cleaned the groves in the action and "front end" so I hope to shoot it this week:):)
Awesome! Hopefully it operates and shoots great and you have fun shooting your Stevens shotgun.
I just picked up the Montgomery Ward edition from a pawnshop and a 16 gauge. Thank you very informative no I know how to Take it down and clean it
I have one that's why I'm here looking it up and didnt know it came apart like that but mine still has the long barrel, Thanks for the vid.
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
mandruch......glad I could help you out. Have fun with that great old shotgun and I really appreciate the nice comment.
Great video! I need to have my Dad watch it on our next visit. Over thanksgiving, he gave me his. It is identical to yours. He says it may have been a police gun at one time, but since the same model was used by the military and had a civilian model on the market as well, I have no way of knowing for sure. Thanks
I need to get one of these. I love the old takedown shotguns. I've got an 1897 Winchester and a Remington Model 10. Something interesting of note is that the Stevens (I don't remember if it was the 520 and the 620 or just the 620), the Winchester 97, and the Remington M10 were all used as Riot/Trench guns by the US military (Along with the Ithaca M37 and Winchester M12)
Good evening, many thanks to you sir. Video was very informative and also entertaining as well.
Very nice......PS. Love the name..Have a great weekend and holiday
I love comments like yours.....guys like you are the reason I do these videos. Glad I could help with your disassembly. Please let me know how you like your shotgun after you have shot it. Maybe I'll do another video on this shotgun where I do nothing but shoot the heck out of it. Be safe and have fun, Brother !
Bottles do explode quite magnificently when shot.
al moo....glad i was able to help on the disassembly of your 620. Thanks for the great comment. Be safe and enjoy that shotgun.
Hello! Great video! Any chance you could show me how to get the stock off of my 67 series c? I'd like to either fix up the dings or replace it with new old stock.. 😉 thanks for your time ~Jeff
@@JK-pg8jf Hello Jeff. I can't make a video on the 67 shotgun but taking off the butt stock is a simple process. Remove the two screws holding on the buttplate and then use a large flathead screwdriver to remove the screw inside the buttstock. The stock should then slide off the receiver. I am unable to tell you how to remove the forearm since I don't have access to a model 67 shotgun but here is a schematic which might help, especially if you need parts for your shotgun.
Vincent....I appreciate the kind words. Posting a video on RUclips is very time consuming but comments like yours make it all worth it. Thanks for watching my video and thanks for the sub.
Nice video!!!
+dowdawg ...thanks :)
I got one today the barrel is a really long and the safety is in front of the trigger in the trigger guard any info about the one I have?
quick question. When you take the screw out above the safety, is there supposed to be a spring under that? it is hallow.
I just picked up a double hump 520 with the suicide safety, shot 2 boxes of 2 3/4 through it and worked great, gun was in rough shape, and after I took it apart I bet this gun had not been properly cleaned in seriously 50 years. My gun was made in 1913 I believe, but its pretty impressive shootin gun being over 100 years old.
Good shotgun get you one, see you next time. That was funny I don't know why but it just was
I have a model 77b and I'm thinking of shortening the barrel. How can you remove just the barrel?
rcruz003....John Browning was indeed a genius. Thanks for the great comment and thanks for watching my video.
If you go to "gunpartscorp' you'll find a schematic of your Stevens 520. They might also have the parts you need for your shotgun. The schematic will be listed under "Savage-Stevens-Springfield-Fox'. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Good luck.
SuperMarshall2009....sounds like you got a great deal. And thanks for the nice comments. Have Fun!
I got one of these when u go to fire it it locks up and in order to get the shell out u have to push the lever in by the trigger to get the shell out everytime what do u think is wrong withit
just got my great grandfathers model 520, any ideas for when the magazine tube wont turn? thanks
Just got one of these for 50 bucks. Thanks for the vid.
$50!!! I'm jealous.
I got a hiwathia 130 VRF full sz 20 gauge I’ve had it 12 yrs wish I new when it was made
I have the Ward's Western Field Model 60-SB620-A 16 gauge shotgun. This is my dad's gun and I recently got it from him and haven't fired it. In your video you point out the "bolt release". What does this do? This gun also has "Poly-Choke" at the end of the barrel. Do you have any information on how to use that feature?
Awesome video sir! Any tips on cutting the barrel properly?
Nice presentation. Couple quick questions: 1) Ive heard you can keep the mag tube loaded even after takedown....is that true? 2) Does any play develope between the reciever and barrel/mag...and if so is there an adjustment to tighten it back up like on a win model 12? 3) Can you single load fast if needed by droping into the ejection port? 4) How does it stack up against a win model 12?
bought one today for 60 bucks and another (springfield) for 85 bucks. Both are twenty gauge. sawed one off (legal length) and left the other alone. awesome little cannons both.
Thanks for the video! My grandfather left me a few guns, this one being one of them but it's stamped with Sears and Roebuck JC Higgins 102.25.Do you have any idea how to disassemble the action assembly? Something inside the gun let go and I would like to repair it if possible. I don't think it's broken, I found a screw loose and think one of the parts is taking a free ride. Thanks!
I noticed when you were shooting it the case stuck (didn't eject) and you had to remove it by hand. I have a 620 with the same problem. Is there a new ejector spring available to correct this?
Do you have a video of more detailed disassembly for cleaning? I have a riverside arms co pump action that could use a good cleaning
Sorry, I don't William. I sold my 620 shotgun several years ago so I can't do a more detailed disassembly video on it.
Got one for 90 bucks. A little elbow grease and creativity it can be worth a few hundred. Beautiful gun
JoezVendetta....thanks for the comment. Savage made a Model 30E but I don't believe Stevens did. The Savage is very similar , mechanically, to the Springfield Models 67 & 77. Perhaps you can find a video of that model on RUclips. Good luck.
anyone know if theres a vid for the 12 gauge revelation 300 model made by savage/stevens for western auto? i have one that needs its firing pin checked out but ive never broke down a pump action before.
thanks i got one for home defense for me and the wife she is quite the shooter now lol
I got the westfield 60s-620a shotgun and the action bar broke any recommendations to find a new one/ replacement
An action bar for your 620 might be very hard to find. Keep checking ebay and eventually one will show up.
havnfunhere.....I'm sorry I don't have a Model 77D, otherwise I would love to do a video on it. I've checked my gun smithing books and I can't find anything on your model, except that it was also sold as the Western Auto Model 300F. Taking apart a pump shotgun for the first time can be a little tricky if you don't know how the parts work together. I wish I could be more help. Maybe you can find something on the Western Auto 300F. Thanks for a great comment and thanks for watching. Good luck.
I have a 1925-26 Stevens 520. I can't get it to separate. I follow your exact steps but the action bar won't clear. it's like it's catching on something. I'll keep working at it. Any tips. The barrel isn't dropping down much so maybe I need to keep working at it. probably hasn't been apart in 100 years.
I would spray the heck out of it with WD40 and let it sit for a day or two and I'm willing it will come apart rather easy.
Where can I find a replacement stock?
This is so helpful, I haven’t disassembled mine yet but now I feel comfortable to be able to. My shotgun ( Model 67H ) only accepts one in the tube, any suggestions on how to fix? Spring? Lifter assembly?
It sounds like there might be a wooden plug inside the magazine tube which is used to limit magazine capacity or perhaps the magazine tube is dented. Once you take off the barrel you can get a closer look at the magazine tube and hopefully see what the problem might be.
@@mixup98 cool thanks
@@mixup98 thanks again, that’s exactly what it was. 🙌🏼
@@robhtp3817 Glad I could help and have a Great Thanksgiving!
Hi, @mixup98, what would cause the operating bar to not release from the bolt carrier during the foreend removal step?
Hello Josiah. It is very important that you push down the barrel slightly once the magazine tube lug clears the receiver. Pushing down the barrel is what unlocks the operating bar from the bolt. Carefully watch the video at 1:38 and notice that I slightly push the barrel down, unlocking the operating bar. If it still doesn't unlatch then you might try spraying WD40 or some other lubricant inside the receiver and see if that will unstick the bar.
@@mixup98 Hi, and thank you for the prompt reply. As it turned out someone had kludged a silver solder "repair" to the bar end and it lacked the clearance to disengage from the block slide. No idea how they got it to reassemble, but i had to disassemble to the bare receiver and dremel off some material to get it apart. Would you perhaps be kind enough to mic the dimensions on the slide end of the bar so i can rechape it to spec?
@@josiahname5764 Unfortunately I sold this old shotgun several years ago and I don't have access to it. Maybe one of my viewers would be so kind as to mic the bar end and leave a comment for you.
thats one way to open up a beer
Don't take too much of what this guy says to heart. The 620 was produced prior to 1932. And the 620 was never made for Sears but for Montgomery Ward as the model 50. And my mother has a 520 Sears Ranger marked as a model 30. My dad collected the 520s and the 620s.
Rogers.....you're welcome. I wouldn't want to get hit in the head with a 620 shotgun. I have also done a video on the disassembly of this shotgun if you are interested. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video.
the model I have does not keep the shells from comming out of the tube as i load them. Any idea what could be the problem?
There is a small latch that keeps the shells locked into the magazine until the action is cycled and it appears the latch may be broken. Here is a link to the site I use for parts. Look up your make and model and see if you can find a schematic which will help you find the correct part. www.gunpartscorp.com/
Thanks for the video, helped me take mine apart. Does anyone have a manual / diagrams for the Stevens 520? I just got one and I'm having quite a few issues with mine. Cheers :)
hello-have several of these 520 model 12 16 20ga and was wondering if they ever were built in 28 and 410, i like this old take-down stuff where the gun is in 2 pieces and not the barrel in one hand and the receiver and mag tube in the other, keep up good work
Hello Jim. I have never seen a model 520 chambered in .410 or 28 gauge. I sold the shotgun shown in the video and I've been kicking myself ever since.
@@mixup98 you got to be careful, these can grow on you
Chris....are you able to turn the magazine tube? If not, try spraying some WD40 on both ends of the tube, especially where is enters the receiver, let it sit for awhile and then try to turn it. If the magazine tube hasn't been turned in a lot of years then it is probably stuck. Try wrapping a rag around it to get some traction. Just don't use vise grips or pliers to turn the tube.
ShakerHP.....do you need vidoe of the trigger assembly? Can you tell me if the safety works and if the gun will fire? Does the hammer and sear appear to be working properly? Does your gun have a butt stock? Maybe you can take some photos and put them on RUclips and list them as private and give me the link. I really want to help you but I need a little more information about exactly what is wrong with the gun and then hopefully I can explain how the parts work and what part might be missing.
Would someone tell me how to safely unload a model 620 please? Thank You
cherokid....Stevens made this shotgun for several decades and a decent 12 gauge shouldn't be too hard to find for around $200. If more people knew about the quality of this gun I think the prices would be much higher. Good luck and thanks for watching my video.
I can turn the tube, I can push the barrel down, but in the next step the pump stops before it exits the receiver. Spent the last hour and a half on this, any suggestions?
Candlelight Films ...your shotgun must be slightly different from mine. Is the bolt all the way to the rear when the barrel is pushed down and you slide your forearm forward? Does the bolt stay to the rear or does it move forward when you push the forearm forward? If the bolt is moving forward then it is not unlocking from the slide. The barrel should come down about a quarter inch or so, then move the slide forward, and push the barrel down and off the receiver. Mine comes apart so easy and I can't understand why yours won't.
mixup98 I tried again today to no avail. When going past the slide does the "hook" go down toward the trigger or recess into the body of the receiver?
***** ..the hook should go down toward the trigger. I have another video on youtube showing how to completely disassemble the shotgun. You may have to take off the buttstock and pull out the trigger assembly to see what the problem may be. You can check out the video here: @dg6XLH4GOpc
Thanks for the info. I was unaware John Browning designed this shotgun. The one I have is a M.Wards model 60 - whatever. Its the same gun in 16 gauge. This shotgun is extremely well made. The are inexpensive as well. I checked around for insurance purposes on mine which I inherited. The value is about 200 bucks. Hard to go wrong at that price. I think I will see if I can find a 12 in decent shape. The 16 works great but its a bitch finding 16 gauge ammo any time much less now.
I've got a really old Stevens 520 "humpback" with an unusual problem: The forearm pump stays locked after you pull the trigger. You have to push the slide lock release button to free the pump. Someone told me it operates on inertia; that the kickback automatically releases the lock on the forearm. Is this true? I've never fired it, but dry-fired it (I know I shouldn't, but I had to know). Can anybody verify if this is true? Am I missing some internal parts?
Sounds like the tube hasn't been turned in many years. Try a little lite oil on both ends of the tube and then wrap a rag around it and give a good turn. That should do it.
I have the 520, branded by Montgomery Ward as a Western Field Model 30.
Is the Steven's 820B the same as this shotgun? I'm planning on buying one this week.
Ale7....no, this is not the same shotgun. If you will need parts for your gun you should try gunsparts.corp. They have a good schematic of the 820B shotgun.
Thanks, I found it at a store on the weekend. im on a budget for my first shotgun a budget of 200 dollars and they are selling the Steven's / Savage 820b for $85 dollars. It looks to be in good condition not too much wear and tear for an old gun. Can you possibly give me any info on the gun if you know anything? I look on numerous forums and from what I've seen people say its a shotgun made to last a lifetime. My last question would be what kind of 12 gauge ammo would you recommend shooting through a basic smooth bore barrel shotgun?
Ale7 Buckshot, Birdshot and rifled slugs can all be shot out of a smooth bore barrel.....just no sabots....you can shoot sabots but they will tumble after leaving the barrel so they arn't very accurate in a smooth bore.....
+Ale7 only shoot lead shot. Dont shoot any steel shot at all. dont shoot any slugs out of it either.
vertebaby I've fired slugs out of it, didnt have any problems
You are right, friend. The 520A "straightback" is more compatible with the 620. The very early 520 "humpback" is the model that went through several design changes. With the safety switch and the slide lock release button being rearranged. And forget about going to the gunsmith, they only work on ultra-sleek, modern competitve $750 shotguns and rifles. They don't touch that turn-of-the-century "junk" - that's what they called it, not me.
What type of oil would you recommend using for this gun? I was given this same one and i love the look, it’s just not performing well. Probably hasn’t seen a cleaning in ages!
It sounds like your shotgun needs a good cleaning and properly lubricated. I used 3-In-One oil but any light gun oil will work. Field strip the shotgun, clean it, and apply a very light drop of oil to the moving parts and anywhere you see wear on the metal parts.
you can try 'gunpartscorp'. Good luck.
Make sure the barrel will be at least 18.5 inches long and the overall length at least 26 inches. First wrap the area to be cut with masking tape and then lightly score it with a tube cutter. DO NOT USE THE TUBE CUTTER TO CUT OFF THE BARREL. Use a hacksaw with a metal blade and cut on the line you made with the tube cutter. Use a file to square the end of the barrel. Brownells sells a cutter that will square the end if you don't want to use a file. Simple job, just take your time.
Anyone making aftermarket parts for these anymore?
Wife picked up a 40n wont feed rite trying to figure it out
if their the same gauge , the barrel and pump action should exchange , with the action of the other. i didn't believe it myself, until i saw one for sale at cabelas. a 620 16 gauge barrel and pump to a 520 16 gauge action and stock. i've never had a single hump 520a, but do have three 12 gauge and one 20 gauge double humps. i'd take it to a good gunsmith.
I cannot get that screw to remove the plug loose...
Use a lot of penetrating oil and let it sit for a day or two and that will probably loosen it up.
I will get me one
mopart600....I will try to post a video showing the dissasembly of this shotgun. I really don't have room here to try and tell you how. You have a Savage Model 520 and you can find a decent schematic at "gunpartscorp". At the website click on the "S" under the alphabetical listing, then click on "Savage/Stevens/Springfiield/Fox". At least that will give you ideal of whats inside the shotgun. Does your shotgun have a "hump" on the receiver and a tang safety? Watch for my video.
my action rod will not come out ????
stevens mod 620
Your action rod must still be engaged with the slide ( or bolt ) which is causing the rod to not come out. Once the barrel separates from the receiver you must move the barrel down slightly which causes the action rod to separate from the bolt. If you watch at 1:37 in the video you will see the steps it takes to remove the action rod.
the action rod has been used so much through the years that it swelled causing it to hook deeper into the slide assembly.... had to take apart the receiver to get it apart :(
it is my late grandfather's shotgun from 1942
not sure if it was his service shotgun or not
there is no identifying markings like ( US PROPERTY) or serial numbers just that it says

I know I'm a couple years late, but my 620 is having the same problem. How did you get your action rod out? I took the trigger assembly and lifter out and am struggling to get the rod out. Figured you could give me some insight, John Cook
I just bought one of these from a local gun shop brought it home and was about to shoot it and I noticed several cracks on top where the bolt locks in place. Unfortunately I don't think it's safe to shoot
If anyone has any suggestions / comments I'll be happy to read.
I suggest you not shoot it until you have a gunsmith take a look at it. Honestly, I think I would take it back to get a refund.

Is there a way you could remove your butt stock and film what is inside the rear trigger area end of the gun area I have one and I'm missing some part from that shotgun. It was given to me and I have no idea what's missing out the backend of that gun. I would send you a picture but I don't know how to send a photo on RUclips.
What's up buddy, got a story for you. About 21 yrs ago a friend had (what I thought when i seen it a old riot gun) but it was old and rough for $20. So I got it, its a Stevens 77H that someone lobbed a couple inches off of and put a hole for bead at about 11:30 instead of 12 o'clock. I gave it to another friend because the block that holds the stock had been broke and repaired but he just took it apart and threw it up in rafters of basement. Now its made its way back to me, do you know anybody that sells parts? He lost the stock with part of the broke part of of the back of trigger assembly. The shotgun could be a decent truck gun I only went and got it back because it never hurts adding another one (especially with BS going on) but parts are hard to find.
You're right, parts are hard to find for the Steven H77 shotgun. Here is a link to where I get my parts and they might have some parts available. Keep checking with them because occasionally they will get in more parts. Also keep an eye on ebay, you would be surprised what shows up there sometimes. Good luck and I hope you get that old shotgun fixed: www.gunpartscorp.com/gun-manufacturer/savstevspgfld/shotguns-sav/77-shotgun-series/77h
@@mixup98 thanks buddy
Not quite, friend. I've got both a 520 "humpback" and a 520A "straightback" model and had them both torn down side by side for cleaning. There are subtle differences in parts and design. The 520 went through a couple of design/engineering changes in its lengthy lifespan. I'm having problems with my 520, and the parts schematics I see on the 'net are rather fuzzy and confusing. I'd like to see a clear, concise schematic on the 520 someday. The 620 shouldn't be lumped with 520.
mopart....an email won't be necessary as I know what your model 520 looks like. Disassembly will be almost the same as my 620, except for removal of the stock. Your safety is also different but that shouldn't matter. Most of the internal parts should be similiar to mine and we will get your shotgun taken down and, hopefully. fixed. I'll try to post a video within the next couple of days.
I would suggest never letting a gunsmith (with that kind of attitude) like that touching any of your guns. But that's just me. I've got a Ward's Westernfield Model 30 16ga with Coates Comp/choke combo (stock) Damn fine shotgun...
Stoneslinger...sounds like you got a great deal on a great shotgun. Try 'gunparts" dot com if you need parts for your shotgun.
Is there a way to make my barrel shorter I have the same model but the barrel is super long
Hello Byron and thanks for the great question. I recently did a video showing how to cut down the barrel on an old Mossberg shotgun. Make sure the barrel is longer than 18 inches. Here is that video: ruclips.net/video/wYmVlxdhJco/видео.html
@@mixup98 will do thank you for responding
You’d be better off trading or selling it toward a new shotgun with a shorter barrel. These old pumps are getting harder to find in “unmolested” condition.
