    OUTRO: • Healing Interlude
ABOUT THE GAME: The Long Dark is a thoughtful, exploration-survival experience that challenges solo players to think for themselves as they explore an expansive frozen wilderness in the aftermath of a geomagnetic disaster. There are no zombies -- only you, the cold, and all the threats Mother Nature can muster. The Long Dark is a first-person survival video game developed and published by Hinterland Studios. The player assumes the role of crash-landed bush pilot Will Mackenzie who must survive the frigid Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic storm. The game received seed financing from the Canada Media Fund, and further funding was secured through a successful Kickstarter campaign in October 2013.

The beginning IS easier. You can at least go somewhere new and find perishable food or perhaps pre-killed carcasses (I leave them for feather farms unless I’m starving to death, they won’t decompose if you don’t interact with the carcass)
So yeah, after a few hundred days all that stuff is probably exhausted unless you saved it for the long term or decorative purposes. Your only source of food is going to be cat tails (region dependent) and hunting And now with Scurvy added to the mix…surviving the long game is the real struggle. And if you’re playing Loper the world also gets Colder the longer you survive (forget where the cap is)
I’ve been playing for a long time.
Loper is a little harder at the start but it’s only because you can’t find a bow or gun lying around, and dont spawn in with matches or a bedroll and have to have a good knowledge of the maps ahead of time)

strictly speaking, infinite survival is very possible (one korean youtuber is >11,000 days). I think it technically it has always been possible (mag lens means infinite water, beachcombed metal and birch/maple means infinite bows/arrows and infinite food by extension, fur clothing exists that can be infinitely repaired with pelts and a fishing hook (also infinite) etc.) , but with the recent update to beachcombing that allow much more common and useful items to spawn on beaches such as literal matches, it is much more realistic for even a causal player to technically survive forever even without minmaxing your matches. btw in the early morning the sky is almost always clear (even on hardest weather difficulty) so you can sneak in at least one fire with the mag-lens every day w/o burning a match.

@@ly49nkallo admittedly. i am not great at this game. i won't sit here and pretend i'm a master because i am not. I played a lot when it first came out. and i only just recently played for a bit longer on the newer version. back when i was super invested into the game, surviving for more than a couple hundred days was UNHEARD OF. casual players being able to survive indefinitely is another argument that I don't have great vantage of to tackle. in my experience, playing the game and not watching any guides, allowed me to get a 100 days before i realized the game had become extremely hard because of how i utilized my early resources. i think surviving indefinitely is not super intuitive which is MY FAULT as the player. Had i done more research and planned better I could've lived longer. i just think the way resource management changes as you near the end game is pretty neat! anyways thanks for leaving a comment. i appreciate the insight :)

It’s not careful planning. I seen that guys videos. Isn’t he Korean? All he does is go region to region and kill the bear. And he doesn’t even really hunt. He just abuses the campfire exploit and then passes time. Rinse and repeat. Kinda boring gameplay loop when handled that way. I’d like to see someone reach 11k by actually PLAYING

The only time a bullet is going out is if it is killing something and then feeding me. But, also for future reference, you can actually outrun the wolf. It will stalk you annoyingly for a long time but it won't charge you unless you let it get too close or you have meat on you. Just turn the other way and walk with occasional sprints. It is scary but it works most times.

    So some things you messed up is this;
    1. Your condition bar. While yes you said don't allow the 4 main meters to drain completely you can survive fairly long with all drained individually. Temperature is the hardest of the bunch as you can die within 10 minutes of hypothermia IRL time. Your condition bar (which is the bar below the 4 meters) will rapidly drain unless you make a fire or find proper shelter. Yes proper shelter not all shelters are made the same and some shelters work against you at times. Fatigue which as you mentioned is the easiest to conquer, you die within like 3 or 4 days in game with it drained as it takes 1% every hour in game or something like that. Thirst is like number 2 to manage not the last. Sure it's easy to over come but you have to CONSTANTLY drink water in this game which makes it a valuable resource and you will die within 2 days of not drinking. Hunger can be used to your advantage at times cuz you can starve yourself enough to make food, and if you're playing on the hardest difficulty you will be starving for the first few weeks in game purposefully (trust me on this one, Interloper is not a joke and resources are rarer than me getting a girlfriend). Allow any of these bars to deplete and yes you will slowly start to die. But the bars can be overcome by the amount of gear you have.
    2. Your nitpicks. I get why you don't like the fact you can't just sleep on the ground anywhere but if you understood how fuckin cold the ground is during winter let alone sleeping on snow/ice you would most likely die before you woke up even with the best gear on. Gear becomes more rare because you are using it more throughout your game, but take hope because I can explain some cool things to you. There is this thing called a Milling Machine and there are two locations for them, of which I will keep secret as they are on Wikis and I want people to find them. Anyway, this machine can only be used during the Aurora and can be used to repair tools and weapons (except the bows) with 1 Scrap of Metal each and if I'm not mistaken it can repair broken tools as well (but don't quote me on that as I've never dealt with this issue yet). But to say that the game gets harder "The closer you are to the end" is kinda wrong as hopefully by the time get fully geared with endgame items you won't die unless you mess up completely. Of course I've been playing this game for almost a decade, so my chances of survival are extremely high compared to a new comers first day.

thank you for taking the time to type out this very thorough argument. i can tell you're passionate about the game and that's fucking awesome. i'm an avid video game enjoyer. myself. i definitely stressed the importance of the meters almost to a hyperbolic degree. i used their importance to showcase the main gameplay loop in a simple way that is easy for most people to understand. my opinion on what is easiest is definitely just an opinion. i have not taken the time to master the game on interloper and i can see how that would change some things. i think my nitpicks are just that, they're nitpicks. i'd like to see some more freedom in safehouse creation, sleeping anywhere and possibly some more end game content and craftables. i think i've enjoyed the fact that as the game progresses you slowly shift away from the scavenged goods and move towards the crafted gear. i think that transition is really neat. i haven't survived for a super long time like some people so my inclination that the end game is harder could entirely be opinionated as well. it's not something i particularly dislike that's just how i feel about it. anyways. thanks for your time mate, appreciate u :)

The Needs are calibrated well with your Condition. Makes them fair and realistic at the same time. If you get 0 hunger you don't die right away you just lose condition in between a couple of minutes, same goes for the other conditions. Condition is basically your health bar. Of course time management is important if you decide to sleep or do some kind of work you lose more condition if any of your Needs are at 0 because those things eat up time. You have to always take care of your Needs and your illnesses before going to sleep or doing something or you lose condition from the time spent on doing task.

The game is truly a survival game, once you learn the meta it gets easier, but still if you choose to play Interloper or worse N.O.G.O.A. than no experience on earth can help you when the game simply decides "F U". You really feel like stranded alone in a frozen wasteland trying to not die every day. It has it's problems of course but that is more in the field of "entertainment value vs realism"; For example IRL cooked meat should be parasite free, IRL you could just make flint and tinder or just use sticks, IRL Climbing one friggin rope don't make you tired like 12hrs of dayjob, IRL if you work hard for long you sweat and that freezes on you causing hypothermia, IRL auroras are there 24/7 no matter the weather or daytime etc. The game is scarry, geomagnetic event auroras suddenly powering electric devices by themselves, glimmer fog electricuting the ground, all that gives this erie sense of unease.

I really enjoy this game. and N.O.G.O.A was a really interesting watch :) i think the best part of this game is just its atmosphere. It feels scary. you realize how alone you are. it's nothing but silence until you come across a wolf in the middle of the wasteland. i'm sure learning the meta would definitely improve my odds but i feel like learning the meta, watching videos and reading the wiki would destroy the mystery and the very tense atmosphere. the howling wind, the cry of a distant wolf, the crunching of ice underneath your boots, the audible silence of the snow falling. It's an extremely eerie game and i like it that way. anyways thanks for coming. appreciate u sharing :)

Good video. I tend to be picky about what I spend $ on, but I'd recommend the Long Dark, but only for the survival mode. It's a success at keeping me interested (exploring the areas) and so far I've only played on the Voyageur level, so Interloper is next, I guess. It's rather like walking through a vast Group Of Seven painting, with really nice occasional music.
However, I hated the story mode game, mostly because of that stupid bear, and how I kept dying over and over, with little chance of success, and the dying process takes too long. So you die, start again, have a few seconds to figure out where the spear is, die, spawn again...lather, rinse, repeat. As with so many games, the developers seem to love putting you into situations that are stupidly, needlessly, pointlessly difficult, to the point where I just quit. I ask myself "why am I doing this? I'm supposed to be having fun, but I'm hating this." Just give us a way to skip those sections, for the love of God.

The Long Dark is PEAK survival games. I hate survival games that force you to build mansions. I'm like is this even survival anymore if I'm living in a souped up mansion in the mountains. It's just vacation at this point. If you take shelter you take shelter in a beat up old abandoned factory or in a goddamn cave. Enough with the build shit thing. Do you know how much energy, smarts and materials you really need to build those things?
Green Hell does it good with the nutritional needs but it still plagued with the build your mansion disease.

I haven't found a refined survival game yet. and the biggest titles i've found have been relatively horrible and not very polished. I thought stranded deep was a disaster, the forest was extremely tedious and clunky and green hell is just an abomination (just a few examples). most games ive found have just some tacked on survival element like hunger. but it's never something you have to genuinely worry about. this is the only game i've played where survival is the ONLY objective and the core gameplay loop revolves around that only objective. I'm sure there are games like that out there, i've just yet to find them unfortunately.

@@tywasatakenhandle project zomboid is another where survival is the goal. Its even more detailed, in that you can over eat and get fat or not exercise and lose strength, etc. There are a couple out there. I love TLD however. I stopped playing though when one of their updates corrupted my main survival save. I had hundreds of days and was not wanting to start it all over. Still a good game tho.

A true survival game would allow spears, sling shots, atlatls, binoculars, bow saws, bungee pits and flint. You get lost? Drop a stick. It always points N. A couple thoughts on this "true survival game". It is set in nowhere Canada. How many sq miles in all those maps? And there are just two guns (and no liquor)? LMFAO Flowing waterfalls in sub-zero weather? SMH Breaking ice in sub-zero weather (maybe)? Thawed snow that never refreezes? Steaks laying on the snow that don't freeze? Just some of the unrealistic things you'll find in this fantasy "survival game". The horizontal placement menu is a mess - no wrap - selection should be by double click no matter what slot it appears in - mouse wheel won't move it - what a waste of time for the player "who is trying to survive"

first and foremost i don't think this is realistic. i think it is a semi-realistic survival simulator created with intent to entertain casual gamers. and as such it is crafted to reduce a perceived monotony to the largest audience so it can sell well as a video game. with that being said this is one of the only refined semi-realistic survival games I (personally) have played. I do agree that more items and tools should be able to be crafted and i think it's rather silly and limiting that you can't customize a safehouse to your liking. it'd be sick as hell to mount a deer on my door. there are a lot of problems with the game but regardless i think this is was a unique experience that not many other titles can share. Accordingly, i will enjoy it until another title satisfies this niche genre. Until then, hopefully i don't get goal kicked by a fucking bear.
      cheers
