Man, final affliction sure kills this mode for me. Should have been -90/95% recovery speed debuff* instead to potentially prolong runs. Knowing that you are going to die at same-ish mark kinda ruins it. Entire point of Misery right now is to kit up and hunker down as soon as possible
I disagree, stalker is still a good choice. I'm playing stalker right now only because it has firearms which I absolutely love. But still got interloper run for 130 days, just in case)
Great stuff as always, Bash. The arrival of two afflictions at once on Day 31 was quite a rude surprise. I'm sure Hinterland are very pleased with themselves over all the sneaky, unspecified extras included to make players' lives more miserable. They had to have known players would get this mode down to a science eventually, though.
The last time I was playing TLD, I was just about to being able to survive indefinitely on Interloper. I got as far as crafting improvised tools a few times, but died right afterwards each time! Once I get to long-term survival on Interloper, I'm definitely moving up to Misery! I love that the devs listened to the hardcore playerbase and added Interloper to the new content, and now added an even harder mode!
Hey Bash. Great video! It is interesting to see the mode broken down, especially as I was a playtester and had a lot of details explained to me that I wasnt sure if I could share (e.g. the food poisoning thing that isnt in the text), and also interesting to see how the mode has changed since I playtested it. Seems like they tweaked it (I might be responsible for sprains dealing damage and sour stomach giving parasites, hehe - sorry). Btw the devs are aware that some cooking still heal, and the Well Fed cheese tactic also heals around the 15% mark. I dont know for sure, but I imagine this is not intentional as I believe nothing at all is supposed to heal you after Broken Body sets in. Thanks for the video :)
I very much like the parasites thing! I didn't have it spoiled for me and cooked a whole bear in PV to reach cooking 5, thinking it would set me up. I almost started clapping when I got the risk regardless, I think it suits the mode 😃 Same for sprain damage, the only thing I'm not too fond of is the lowered sprint speed from Rheumatic Joints, I think I'd prefer faster stamina drain or something. I can't seem to heal with well fed though, I know it works on NOGOA under roughly 15%, but it didn't work for me once I got broken body (though I didn't risk testing that on an actual run, just tested with console).
i hate to sound whiney but it seems recently the devs have added so much content but only for THE MOST SERIOUS players. I like voyageur for how casual it is. Misery, all 3 maps in TFTFT, Blackrock, Cougar, Scurvy, etc
None of these things are dangerous on voyager you have to not know what your doing for those things to kill you by themselves.....in fact on voyager once you have weapons to defend yourself and kill dangerous creatures it becomes significantly easier than pilgrim even, pilgrim is harder than voyager because animals run away from you...wolves charge right at you making their heads easy targets with a bow and arrow or revolver
Was waiting for you to make this kind of video ! Backing up some of my impression with your very deep diving into the game mechanics is priceless. I'm already looking forward to your "perfect Misery start" strategy to see how it does compare to mine :)
i do like the concept of misery, it’s very realistic in my opinion: eventually, all survivors of any apocalypse will age or become chronically ill. it adds up to the feeling of an already bleak game, as the player now has to deal with the hopelessness of dying alone in the wilderness as their condition progresses. rheumatic joints is especially cool in my opinion, it brings the sort of more realistic immersive experience to someone with rheuma
It's almost the same as I do in my Stalker runs: avoid struggles, eat only fresh food, not eat predators meat, almost no sprinting to fatigue, trying not to get too much hypothermia. I like to plan ahead and be very cautious. So very nice changes, except permanent damage and no regenerations, that's seems not fun, but haven't tried this yet
I remember the one map days where you survived based on how many matches you could get and how long you kept clothes together. It’s cool to see that come back.
So once Broken Body hits, you can't heal anymore and whatever Hit points you have is what you have the rest of the run, period. So essentially at that point you cannot take damage for any reason, ever.
@ivanfelipe240 you can avoid sprains in most areas of the game if you think about your pathing, on day 100+ and I haven't gotten 1 sprain since broken body hit, you definitely can't goat anymore but it makes every decision count. Is that stick sitting at the top of a steep hill worth it? 🤔🤣 Edit: also you aren't "stuck" to your base I've traveled from ML to the Riken to forge after broken body and from ML to explore Milton and in various cave runs for coal. Just gotta properly plan and wait for good weather
I think they should add a way to escape to the mainland and make it to civilisation to the south but only in Interloper or Misery mode perhaps. You need to gather enough resources to survive winter, then at sea as you cross to the mainland in a boat of some kind when spring comes, rowing or sail most likely. And then have a map for mainland that you have to head south on until the weather begins to improve. Release it a bit at a time like now, I'd pay extra for a mainland expansion. Or maybe do some expansions how Deep Rock Galactic does them, everything gets released and they release supporter packs every so often that give you a golden toque or something that you spawn with maybe.
Good info - I was going for the Prepper Pie (25%) and Dockworkers pie (35%) but according to this the first doesnt work at all and the 2nd is for 10% only so thanks for that...saved me some time and hassle...I wont bother witht he Timberwolves then in Bleak Inlet...
@Bashrobe - Hey, quonset manager here. Love your videos. I wrote a guide called Weight, Weight, don't tell me. About carry capacity. Having seen your videos, i bow to your superior skill. I would love to take my old guide and update it. I have no doubt you'd do it justice. - QM
I've done a few runs, imo skip tech backpack. Staying warm, food etc is so rng dependent it can make you constantly never catching up to where you were.
Thanks Bash! I always learn something interesting from your videos :) The beachcombing change is very interesting, since it was probably a bit too overpowered. I don't think the combination of RJ/BB will be enough to completely stop players from goating, but it will be interesting to see to what extent that happens. Certainly routes like the Homesteader's shortcut will no longer be viable, but a lot of routes(such as goating in/out of milton climbing area) should still be viable. It's just a question of whether experienced players will find it worthwhile to learn how to do these routes safely in the lategame, or if they would rather take the safe climbs. It may well be the case that nobody will bother to goat at day 50+ when energy really isn't at a premium anyway.
True, I was very hesitant to goat anywhere the first few days after BB, but I've been getting a little braver every day. Didn't know the MT goat was doable sprain free. I've only bothered with MT once but I took the rope 😃
Even Dark just does the basin route for coal and Birch bark. I think it's probs best for misery, you need the teas and coal. He's on day 300 and just doing rounds stocking up. Once he has enough of everything he will probably wounder a bit more we shall see. He's already saying 1000 days plus is easy for him.
thanks for great inforrmation Bashrobe! Well, i definitly know that i'll make a challenge playthrough about Misery now.. Is there any record on Misery atm?
Don't know about a record, but there's definitely people with hundreds of days at this point. I'm around day 160 on my run and by playing carefully, I could probably go forever, but it's slow and stressful.
I've played TLD for 2100 hours, and I like to survival but not die. If the recipes for HP stop working, I will immediately stop playing in misery. Becouse It will become a very boring challenge after day 47, not a survival mode.
I feel like the way to deal with the meat problem is to stockpile raw meat instead of cooked meat and just cook it whenever you need to eat it. That way you are taking much less risk of getting food poisoning.
@@jeremysaynomore7175 Exactly, this will not work in Misery, as meat needs to be over 75% to be safe. I'll go more into food poisoning mechanics in the next video.
It's still much better than stockpiling cooked meat or not getting anything. 50% is not a guaranteed food poisoning after all. But yes, better be eating fresh meat.
Ive tried coming back to this game, as i bought wayyyyyy back when it was first released as a kind of open beta. it’s not meant to be fun lol, broken body is just the game telling you “congrats you made it this far, there is no reward lol i’m sure you’re miserable enough”
if u know TLD twitch community, veterans players are always making hard challenge. Hinterland gives them misery as stated by others was not meant to be fun. i have tried twice, and went back to my loper run 😂
This game is about a man who is simping way too hard for a woman who doesn't even care if he's alive. Also a lot of these animals really tend to run away from humans, including the black bear. Grizzly bears are a different case though.
misery made to make more players to buy the DLC, you can make it without it. I made it to day 90 without it but i m stuck and cant leave my place so i can survive more with hybernating witch i m not interesting to do
This game is 10 or 12 years old, people have gotten good at it. I guess 10% of the player base will play this game mode regularly, another 25% will try it from time to time, and 50% will watch streamers and youtubers play it.

I think the entire point of misery mode is to kill you. I don’t think hinterland wanted to make the hardest difficulty possible, and this is it.
