@@thisismyusername6717 it’s an Seneca aspen that was rebuilt by a machinist buddy. It doesn’t really have any stock parts so it would be more honest to call it a Monroe after the man who made the parts
The technology they have in air rifles now is incredible. I’ve watched Keith Warren hunting videos where he has taken big game with .50 cal air rifles.
For this rifle I would probably choose 22 for being common available pellets you won't have to wait for shipment. Probably get a bit more distance out of it too.
You still have to get quality pellets such as Benjamin. The Daisy pellets are made for the Daisy 880, and are softer, lighter and too high of variation in weights. Gamo pellets are good too. The best are the European brands and those baracuda hunter extremes are awesome. I picked up a stash during Covid along with a couple of Gamo air guns. They make for cheap target practice. After learning about them, I would love to have a PCP for consistency.
H&N Piledriver pellet. They make a 51gr slug in .25, 30gr slug in .22 and 21gr slug in .177. They resist wind drift incredibly but they only work well with PCP rifles.
I’ve been debating between these two calibers for small pest management. Basically, the .22 has less impact but flies a little further at a flatter trajectory. It also really depends on what air gun you shoot it from. Damn, now you got me looking to buy another air gun! Great video, thanks!
They are both really good pellets. I would pick the .22 though because of availability and shot count per fill on the air. At least in my area the .22 pellets are available .25 has to be ordered. I also have extreme accuracy with FX Atomic pellets at 905 fps they group almost 1 hole at 50 yards. Slugs in both of these are also very impressive. I like Nielsen Specialty Ammo. Very accurate and made right here in the USA over in Missouri.
The energy difference is astounding. Barrel length and the air release valve timing also makes a huge difference. Lots of kits for PCP rifles can delay the air valve and increase velocity but you lose a lot more air per shot.
I have a .25 cal Benjamin Marauder that has similar performance. When we're talking small bore air rifles, recoil, cost per shot, and air consumption are relatively similar . In my opinion, the .25 is useful for everything the .22 is useful for, plus more. That doesn't hold true for the reverse, therefore, I'd go with the .25 cal. I've probably taken a couple hundred squirrels with mine, most of which were headshots. It'll print a dime sized group at 35 yards with JSB Exact Match Kings.
The difference between 22 pellets and 25 is amazing. If you have two guns shooting the same power level the 25 will deliver 50% more of it's energy to target
As technology improves I think air rifles are the future, nice to see you look at them now and again, but don't keep pellets in your mouth they are very poisonous
Excellent video! And answers my question on which cal. I'm likely going with. In the market for a good pellet gun and was leaning towards the .22 anyways over the .25 for backyard pest control/hunting and plinking. But this video was a good one on the power dump of both. Thank you!
I have the Benjamin Marauder in .25 cal. One night I shot two hogs at 30 yds. 60 & 50 lb. The 60 was hit just behind the ear and the 50 in the forehead. It was lights out for both.
Very interesting, and I think useful comparison, thanks! In my air arsenal I have a .177 and .22 rifle, three .25 and a .357. The .25 calibre is my favorite all round caliber, though I don't hunt anything but pests (and don't use the. 357 for that).
Impressive. I got a GMO 22 rifle like these well it’s a magazine fed I really like it thank you I hope you’ve been doing good. I’ve been with a lot of stuff lately myself and I wish you guys the best.

Yes sir the R9 is nice I have the R1 that is 38 years old last time I choreographed it shot 1050 fps. with a silver bear hollow point in 177. Bought a Fx impact when I retired so I don't shoot the beeman much anymore but it is accurate and powerful
Now on a different caliber .177. I found the Silver Jet brand was the most accurate and took more squirrels with one shot kills than the .22 caliber pellets. And .177 caliber is the speed demon. Velocity kills.
Got a Gamo springer 22 from academy with my TNWA 20% off coupon to do some squirrel hunting this year. It puts some nice dents in rimfire steel at 30 yards. Impressed with these clay block test.
That's really cool! I tried mixing up some joint compound as thick as I could get it. Shot it with a Daisy 880 and was surprised! 11/2" hole in the front and 3/4 out the rear of 7 1/2" of block!
Really wished you would of dug the 22 cal pellet out so we could see the expansion. You should do a test with regular hollow points compared to the pellets with the Phillips screwdriver looking tip.
Seems like both guns were tuned differently since you had about a 10 gr difference in pellet weight and very similar muzzle velocities. What was the reg set to on both? How many turns of the HS?
Even though you mentioned that they were the same pellet - the weight and energy would be the deciding factor.. You never mentioned the weight of the pellets.. If you are going to do a true comparison then you would need to use 25 gran pellets for both the .22 and .25 and adjust the velocity to be the same.. This way they both have the same muzzle energy.. With that said then the .22 would have more penetration where as the .25 would have a larger hole.. Also, the .25 would slow down faster and loose more energy for any given distance, meaning that if the muzzle energy is the same then at 100 yards the .22 would retain more energy and be going faster.. So when the velocity and muzzle energy is the same the .22 would be faster, have more energy and penetrate deeper at 10yards to infinity.. Comparing 18.52 grain .22 vs 28.24 grain .25 at about the same velocity is not a true comparison because the .25 with the heavier pellet has way more energy.. Pop a 25 grain .22 and increase the velocity so that the energy is about the same as the .25 and you may see a whole different ball game.. You probably would find that the .22 dominates the .25 at all ranges.. The only advantage that the .25 has is the ability to shoot 30-40+ grain pellets, but under 30 grains the .22 would have the advantage..
I'd love to have a pcp in either though both of my Springers are in 22. I just need to justify the cost of the compressor and tank. BUT with the Gas powered Springer, I can leave that in the closet, not worry about whether there is air in it keeping the seals good and grab it real quick, pump and shoot. BUT, the PCPs are generally so much more dialable and usually have sweeter triggers. You know, what I really need is MORE TOYS! I am a little upset. Man like you gotta have a pocket knife.
