    UPDATES -
    1. Canon made a 17-55 f2.8 EF-S lens (launched in 2006)
    2. Canon makes f4 L-Series zooms, price between $1300-$2000, not great for low light or blurry backgrounds, but more affordable than the other L Lenses.
    3. Don't shoot the messenger. -This saying came about because of the natural urge, in some people, to get angry at the person delivering the bad news, instead of the source of the bad news. This is not an attack on you, or your camera selection, this is about company exploiting its customers, in search of greater profit, and is likely short sighted by Canon.

Hi Mark, I agree with your views and really hope that Canon will release the rumored RF-S 16-55 IS F2.8 very soon in the RF-S lineup. How about a test of the RF 14-35 F4L and the RF 24-105 F4L on the R7? Within the last week I purchased the R7 as my first camera, upgrading from an iPhone. I did research on compact mirrorless options but it was a lot to take in. At my local camera store, the sales rep strongly preferred and recommended the R10 and R7. Preferably, I’d like to get over five years out of my R7 before spending money on another body.

Which lens did you buy? What kind of photography do you like to do? The RF glass problem is mostly a beginner / intermediate problem unfortunately. Most pros would be able to justify spending the extra $$$ on expensive RF glass, but there won’t be too many inexpensive third party lens options for others to step up to after they’ve outgrown their kit lens.

It really is hard to say. Some people will find that their needs are met by the lenses available, others will find that the exact lens they need is not even available or out of their price range. I’m a recreational shooter that recently purchased an R7. I love this camera. I chose it because it doesn’t have a limit on video recording and overheating like the other models. I’m a auto sports fan, and driver so the sports oriented capabilities are in my wheelhouse. That said, I would like to get some not-so-costly alternatives for shallow DOF shots with zoom. In the meantime, I’m having fun peeling back the layers of capabilities on this machine. Thanks for the video, and I’ll keep checking for your work-arounds on the R7.

@@joemike_8725 I’m still loving this camera. I like that I can get some decent glass without paying big bucks for RF stuff. I’ve acquired a number of mid-priced lenses using the Meike EFS-RF adapter with the VND filter. This is plenty of capability for my purposes. I’ve also acquired a Ronin gimbal, and used it to shoot a RUclips for a well-known Tuber. To be clear, I’m not in the motorsports industry, I drive on HPDE track days, and go to races (mostly F1) for fun (and exhilaration). I can’t speak to your other choices, but I went through a lot of side-by-side comps, watched a lot of YT’s, then adjusted the capabilities wanted to my budget. APS-C vs. full frame will be your biggest decision, and that’s going to determine your budget for not only the camera, but mostly the range of lenses you can afford.

Your calculations about sensor equivalent resolution are a little out. The R7 sensor would be 83MP if scaled up to full frame (32.5x1.6x1.6) and the R10 sensor would be 63MP (24x1.6x1.6). But your point is correct, these are dense sensors with high resolution that will give their best results with very good lenses.

Disappointing, but not devastating news. Didn't Canon also initially block third parties from making EF lenses as well? This ban isn't likely forever, just until they can get their Canon RF lens line where they want it. They just don't want folks buying RF mount cameras and filling their lens wish list with third party lenses before they get a chance to offer a full line. Obviously just guessing here, but makes sense.

@@kevinblythe2192 I'm sorry. I was under the impression that ALL businesses were looking after their own best interests! Those that don't go out of business. Canon has tons of "bean counters" whose single job is determining how the company can maximize their profits (don't tell me that Sony doesn't!) Somehow Canon continues to be the biggest camera seller in the world, despite all their screwups. From what I read, the early third party RF lenses were crap anyway. If this decision was a mistake, they will figure it out soon enough and correct course. Perhaps they have plans to "lease" the rights to certain third party sellers who make quality products, like Sigma. Who knows? One thing that is certain, everytime someone declares Canon dead, they come roaring back stronger than ever.
As a Canon shooter, my bigger concern by far, is the supply problem from Canon. I've had my order in for an R7 since July. Still waiting!

Thank you for making this video. I just returned my Canon R7 kit (upgrading from an 80D) because of the poor results I was getting adapting my two favorite EFS lenses the 15-85 and the 55-250 STM. I had better results with the 18-135 nano USM lens, perhaps as you point out due to the more modern focusing motors and stabilization in that lens. (BTW, I thought the results with the 18-135ef were better than the 18-150rf kit lens in terms of rendering, eg, better color and clarity, and the 18-135 was also a bit wider at 18 mm.) I do have to wonder if this is why the body-only R7 has been so badly delayed. My first thought was it was because they wanted to sell more RF kit lenses, but knowing the problems with the older EFS lenses specifically, perhaps they realize that if people adapt them they will be immediately disappointed with the results, like I was, and return the camera.

Very interesting video. I think my usual photographic subjects are a much narrower range than most people here. I live on the gulf coast about 15 minutes away from Pensacola, FL. And during their season I’m usually photographing the US Navy Blue Angels at most of their practices and shows in Pensacola. I also try to photograph Pensacola’s minor league baseball team when I can.
I’m currently using the 80D with the EF 100-400 LII and have been pleased, but am really looking forward to renting an R7 later this month for 4 of the Blue Angels’ practices. I’ve already bought the base Canon adapter and am really looking forward to seeing the results I’ll get with the R7.
For the type of photography I’ve described, do you think the R7 and 100-400 LII will be a good combination? If I’m pleased, I’ll probably go ahead and get the R7 as I’ll be finished paying the lens off soon. I’m in no hurry to add to my humble lens collection, and although it’s considered to be a cheap kit lens, I was fairly happy using the EF-s 55-250 IS STM. I was very pleasantly surprised with the detail and sharpness I got with that lens, and I’m curious to see what it’ll do mounted on the R7.
Sorry I rambled on about stuff that probably doesn’t interest a lot of folks here. I was just mainly interested in what you thought of the R7/100-400 combo. And if perhaps you’ve used it, what kind of results you got? Thanks, have a good day.

Even on an R5 I have to adapt an EF 35mm f/1.4L II to get a f/1.4 lens. That and the 1.6 crop factor instead of moving to 1.5 like everybody else should have been corrected. Finally 32.5 Mpixels is fine if you have high quality glass but at 78 Mpixel FF equivalent there is no real glass in FF to support that pixel density. Canon has never gone above a sensor with 50 Mpixels in FF. Sony has gone to 61 Mpixels which is less than 27 Mpixels cropped.

I have always bought full frame lenses for all the APS-C cameras I've owned for the last 20 years - my first digital camera was an EOS D60 from 2002 .... I am a hobby photographer, not a pro, and I've never bought an EF-S lens as it would be useless should I ever decide to go full-frame, and I have no intention of buying RF-S either. I love the effective x1.6 crop ... and I am not concerned about lack of sharpness or vignetting in the corners/edges as the camera is only using the centre of the lens, the edges fall outside the sensor. This was the case during the cross-over from film to digital - in the late 90s - all the pros were clinging to film and dissing digital... the film cameras were all full-frame and the lens selection was pretty much all full-frame - owners of early DSLRs with APS-C sensors just had to make do with full-frame - no-one went bust because of it. Not a lot has changed, just the pro film cameras are now available as full-frame digital equivalents, and a range of pro and consumer glass based on full frame will suffice, just like it did 2 decades ago. I see EF-S and RF-S as consumer lenses for consumer, not enthusiast users, for people who buy a kit, lens included, and in RF-S terms, the 18-45 or 18-150 will keep most of those consumers very happy. Anyone wanting better glass can buy from the full-frame line-up, the 100-400 is effectively a 160-640 making it a real bargain. To me using full-frame lenses is not and never was a problem ... but being tied to Canon only .... that's a problem. From a manufacturers perspective, there is probably far less profit in development and sale of an RF-S lens, which can only be used on APS-C cameras compared to an RF lens which can be used on both ... and if you want fast glass then there are the F2,8 and F4.0 full-frame trinity lenses - you only miss out on the wide-angle stuff, but for that you can buy an inexpensive prime or RF-S.

I have owned Canon EOS 7D crop and Canon EOS 6D full-frame cameras for the past several years, happy with their performance. I traveled with my 7D shooting architecture, wildlife, mountain ridges and all kinds of events exclusively with a Tamron 18-400mm F/3.5-6.3 DI-II VC HLD lens, and I took my 6D with Canon L and DO series lenses to social events and art shows. I think both are great cameras, but I have decided to upgrade to mirrorless and bought an EOS RP, selling the 7D. I do not make money out of photography, even though I have participated in a number of art shows, but I care a lot about quality and performance. My RP works great with my old lenses, I was expecting to keep them all, using Tamron as my only travel lens. What I did not foresee, or perhaps I just did not think well of, was the crop factor - I am only getting about 11 megapixels on the Tamron with RP compared to 18 on the old 7D. Yes, the lens works well, it's fast and has been recently updated, but the cropped image size is only 3888 x 2592. It's definitely not worth using on a full-frame camera. Now here's the question: is it worth buying a Canon EOS R10 as a light travel camera for the heavy Tamron 18-400? Just for the sake of using the lens, which I love. I am not sure how it would perform with the 18-400 lens. The RP is superb, but it's good with FF lenses only.

But as with the Sigma pulsing it only happens in certain situations. The Sigma is the better lens being faster and sharper. But I will keep both. I thought these RF lenses would be far superior but they're being outperformed by older glass. Though the autofocus is a bit faster on the Canon lens.

We kind of do know what EF lenses resolve well on an R7. We've been using EF full frame lenses on cameras like the 7D series since its release. We also have EF lenses being used on the 90D. And best of all we have the 5DSR which can out resolved just about every lens. Canon has released notes that state which lenses are good for the 5DSR. This is why RF series lenses out perform their EF cousins for the most part.

The EF-S works well with good light, but I almost always have the EF 24-70mm mounted, it just works like a charm. If you like bokeh, 50mm f/1.2 wins, and it kicks ass on the 90D and something like the Canon 5D MK iv. I have rented mirrorless cameras to try out, and I personally believe Canon is holding back on those, just like the EF-S lens. You can get a better percentage of in focus shots, but for best results you still need to be intermediate or Pro, just like any high quality camera. Mirrorless Cameras are competition for cell phones. Most people I meet just buy a cell phone, and that is good enough.

Looking at it from this perspective, the path Canon is following is pretty strange, before APS-C sensor cameras were really entry-level cameras and Canon made a point of making that clear, leaving out more advanced features, exclusive to FF cameras. or the Cinema ones, but now, with the R7 being practically a small R6, it would be smart for Canon to produce quality lenses for the APS-C sensor, as well as the Sigma 18-35 (probably the most used lens in APS-C sensors). in the world). Anyway, I hope they at least let other companies make RF lenses. And there's two Tokina 11-16 and 11-20 2.8 pretty good for APS-C cameras.

I may be wrong (wouldn't be the first time!) but I don't think APS C is seen as a "spring board" to full frame. You can buy an entry level full frame camera for about the same as an APS C. Certainly there may be everyday consumers who are just looking for a nice camera with decent features, and don't really understand or care about the difference, but I think the primary customers for APS C are wildlife photographers looking for extra reach with their full frame telephotos. These photographers aren't really interested in dedicated APS C lenses that they can't also use of their full frame cameras. The only APS C lens that might even make sense to them would be a wide angle. I have owned a couple 10ds, 40ds, 7ds and 7d Mark iis. Previously I shot Canon film cameras. I have also owned 5ds (of various generations) and 1ds (of various generations). I never had any interest in buying APS C lenses.

They don't look at what photographers are using the most, they only look at their 2021/2022 sales charts and all they see are FF camera sales exploding. You start think that everyone eventually moves onto FF cameras and you start to see your APSC cameras as nothing but a stepping stone into FF that is losing you money. So naturally, looking at it from a business perspective, they want to get rid of that and turn it into profit, at any and all cost, even if it means f*cking over their APSC customers/users.
