Unfortunately, this channel has been demonetized by RUclips for the third time and therefore the Game Movie Vault has been closed. It was fun for over 10 years but I can no longer afford to spend the time to make these videos without being reimbursed by RUclips. I have started a second channel that focuses on Diablo 4 and I am thinking of starting another separate Game Lore channel very soon.

Title: Metroid: Other M
Main Plot: The Baby
Sakamoto is SUUPER deep so Other M is just "MOther" with the M moved. Also the acronym of "Metroid: Other M" spells MOM because this game is as subtle as a rhino in a China shop
@@elevate07 and of course, the BOTTLE SHIP
@Yu Tubaru Yeah that is a stupid fucking theme to base this game around. Firstly putting Samus into the mother role is contrived as hell. Samus found the baby on SR388 at the end of Metroid 2. She immediately brought the baby to the Feds not for protection but for study on its energy capabilities. After that she fucked off until Ridley attacked and Samus turned around to chase Ridley all the way to Zebes. After that Samus never saw the baby again until Tourian just before it died.
So where was this time for Samus to bond with the baby? Yes I get that she should be grateful to the baby but there was no time for Samus to weirdly imprint herself onto the baby of the species she just exterminated.
@Yu Tubaru the second reason why this is stupid is that THE BABY plot line is dropped midway through. So Samus is feeling distracted because she imprinted on the baby Metroid she didn't know and now is struggling with the loss. So does she ever get a moment of catharsis? Where she realizes the baby wasn't her fault? Or where she uses the loss to strengthen herself? Or anything? Well no. Instead she gets distracted with the Adam story line (which is arguably worse) and the baby just falls off the map halfway through.
Samus is my wife

"Adam hadn't authorized it, but I decided to remain on-site for the sake of the others."
"Also I've blown up like four planets and killed two gods, what's he gonna do, stop me??"
Exactly. I think this is one of the reasons Sakamoto tried to remove the Prime games from the canon because he didn't want those games to work as evidence against his direction for Samus here.
She's practically Batman in her universe, and who in their right mind really thinks they can stop someone like that?
@@johnleonard9102That leaves us still woth Zero Mission, Samus Returns and Super. Where she still did some absolutely batshit insane deeds
10:23 Why would you even need a monologue to explain that? Her facial expression speaks for itself.
Seriously, most of the monologues could have easily been fixed out of the game.
Torkel S H yeah
humm Samus is a human like us. I find this new way to tell the story very interesting, putting us into Samus shoes by knowing what she is thinking. This game is not like the others, it explain how past still hurting her letting us know more deep about her personality like never before ( 49:09 ) one of the best addition to the saga in my opinion.

Imagine how good some of these scenes could have been if they followed this pattern. No dialogue, no monologue. Just subtext, and body movement. I like this scene. It wordlessly potrays that this little creature seems to be following Samus and could builds tension between them. OK, it can't even lay a finger on the cutscenes in MP2: Echoes when Samus and Dark Samus meet, but it's much better than the rest of the scenes considering there isn't a monologue here.
Watch 25:00 to 25:17. Skip to 25:40. Continue until 25:50 and boom you have great cut-scene.
I think all of Dread is like this
You forget fusion had dialogue
@@isauldron4337 I didn't forget that Fusion had monologue's but most of it was text based. We could choose the voice for Samus. Also, the monologue's in Fusion were scarce, and almost always happened in the elevators, when we are taking a break from the action. The rest of the game had in-game "cutscenes".
But also the cutscene's themselves are really gorgious. If you didn't know Samus you would think this was a X360 game.

Robergober lol rober gober
I still think the monotone voice for her is actually very appropriate. Look at it like this. She was seperated from parents and devoided of a childhood at a very young age. Was brought into a race of alien beings who did care for her, but ultimately were hoping to breed her into the ultimate soilder. Though the prime games were rendered non-cannon cause this game. There are a few entries that support the fact the chozo believed samus was the ultimate "champion." Only in this timeline, she goes straight from being trained to be a soilder by the chozo to be being trained again as a soilder in the federation. Don't you think this would have at least some impact on her personality and tone of voice. She can't really afford to let her emotions run her off her mission. Thus why her powersuit was tied into her emtional state of being. If you want to call the retcon to how her powersuit functions as "bad" then fine. I still think it fits with her overal character of being a serious bounty hunter. She has all that power from simply willing the suit unto her being, but still has to keep a ridgid mindset and focus to use it properly.

Only after 30 minutes (in terms of cutscenes), we get four very big nods to that little creature being Ridley. The fact it specifically targeted Samus when she arrived, how it got hit by a Plasma shot and ran (Ridley’s weakness), and that it entered Sector 3, the Pyro sector, aka, the Lower Norfair Sector. They were just dangling the truth in front of us for so long.
I'll admit, I love that tease. Of course, normally you can't really predict it, but if you are familiar with Metroid and you know of Ridley, maybe even know Ridley to every ounce you can of him, then you may actually notice that. Love the buildup.

I really like this moment. Samus just being like "Thanks for the late save, dickhead."
Ok that is some incredible job. Thank you a lot. I forgot the game and it was a pleasure to be able to see the story again.
The story of this game, to me, is a culmination of Samus' grieving of her past; from the loss of her parents to the death of the Baby Metroid. Samus couldn't bring herself to kill the last of its kind since the baby thought Samus was it's mother; something Samus did not have from a very young age. This is where Samus is tested to parent the Baby Metroid, and keep it from being taken away (preventing her own past from repeating itself). But with Mother Brain having killed the baby, Samus became completely monotone and depressed, as if she lost a human child of her own. The baby's death left Samus to believe that she had failed as a parent, and thus, left her reminiscing her past in a way that would make anyone question a normally silent protagonist's motives, and her grieving left her vulnerable as a character, especially when Ridley confronted her. Other M, as flawed as the game was, has a valid point to make, and the haters of this game fail to realize this circumstance.
I just have a slight problem with this...
At absolutely no point in either Metroid II or Super Metroid did Samus show any semblance of thinking of the Metroid as her child. In fact, she was perfectly content with handing it over to the researchers on Ceres and only went after it because of the same reason she went to Zebes the first time. The Infant may have seen Samus as it's mother, but that didn't mean that Samus viewed it as her child which she needed to protect and raise, because she didn't. She handed it off to someone else. Other M just pulled this "relationship" out of its ass to fit it with the awful story.
@@snekladyrobin Not to mention that whole BABY plotline gets dropped like a green headed baby in a bottle ship. Even if I supported that abortion of a plotline, Samus never gets any sort of catharsis that the Baby wasn't her fault or anything. She just gets distracted with the whole AUTHORIZE ME ADAM plot line. Making the entire first hour of the game totally pointless, not that the Adam shit was any better. And yes I know Madeline Bergman is a toxic parallel to Samus and the Metroid. The main problem is that the Mother Brain waifu should never have existed. But the second problem is that Samus never gave a shit about the Metroid other than its potential use as a weapon up until it saved her. Which she was grateful in Fusion and she should be. But she shouldn't have been obsessed with it like she is in Other M.
@@elevate07 Holy shit... It's like they didn't even revise the script and went with the first draft, this is so awful. Other M continues to astound me

There can be no question that this wasn’t the best Metroid game they ever made, but it did have plenty of things going for it. To start: I loved the martial arts part of the combat system, that was satisfyingly flashy. Second: I liked that she was actually humanized this time; we aren’t seeing her as this invincible, static bounty hunter. We are seeing a refreshingly vulnerable side of her; this is a woman who has lost everything she ever loved and cared about, and is consistently subjected to pain and loss. It is because of her past pain and knowing that past weakness is what makes her so strong
Umos if only the story was delivered right
That turned her into the doom slayer at the end of dread
12:51 easily the best part of the game
"Mother... time to go!"
Either that is some shockingly bad dialogue, or some terrible translation. Judging from the rest of the game's writing, I'm going to suggest a bit of both.
Pretty sure it's a reference to Alien/Aliens
She was raised by that thing + the chozo in the manga storyline.
it was badass
TheHollowMoon This is true. Samus sometimes calls Mother Brain "Mother" because that's what she and the Chozo called Mother Brain on Zebes.
@@Luministmusic Or maybe a result of this being translated from Japanese?
She seems way more human in this game. Btw that IS Ridley, the tiny bird-like thingy.

No she seems more like an anime character with a weird drab personality. Maybe she is a little more human, but I prefer normal Samus.

I played this game when I was younger, and I always remembered it fairly fondly. Everyone always said that the story was so bad, and Samus' character was ruined in this. I always disagreed. But going back to it now, with an older mind, I realize just how shoddy the writing is, and how mediocre the voice acting is.
The does, however, really make me hope that Metroid Prime 4 is more cinematic and story based than it's predecessors.
Congratulations; you are letting the internet tell you how to think
I actually love other m. It's not as bad as people say it is. It's not even the the weakest in the series, that title actually belongs to Hunters.
Agreed. The weakest, yes. But I still like to play it from time to time. Still got it here. Standing next to my Prime Trilogy. :-)
Actually hunters takes the cake. It is the worst metroid. Replaying this game, it's brilliant, it only needed a better control scheme.
@@jeezed2950 Hunters had all of the right heart with none of the body. They just couldn't fit Metroid on that cartridge unless they made a slick 2D style metroid. I loved the multiplayer, personally. Imagine what Hunters multiplayer could on the Nintendo Switch, for instance.
Samus said Adam's name for so much times now.
Is there a Problem with that?
I know people argue about Samus’ depiction in Other M. And while I agree the constant monologue should’ve been toned down in moments it wasn’t necessary. I actually think this game did a good job at showing how badly the events of Super Metroid affected Samus not just physically, but emotionally.
It makes sense she felt detached considering Samus was raised by the Chozo on Planet Zebes. Not only that but the baby Metroid that she spared in Metroid 2/Samus Returns and went through hell to retrieve in Super Metroid ends up perishing defending her on Zebes as well. (The baby/Super Metroid always chirped at her thinking Samus was its family and defended her against Ridley and Mother Brain) She ended up being alone again.
However, by the end of Other M, Samus accepts her grief and moves on as she should (she smiles off into the open view in the ending) but people focused too much on her going through the actual grief instead.
I love how the alarms fucking interrupt Samus's moment of vulnerability for the classic self destruct scenario. Perfect doochebag alarm system.
this does a really good job of recapping the bosses so only the important parts are showing. good job there
Anthony Higgs for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.Make it happen Sakurai and this game is amazing.I love this game.Good job Nintendo.👍👍👍👍👍
This was excellent. Thank you. The game sure has come a long way from the one I played in the late 80's and mid-90's.
Its crazy to think this game is 10 years old now. I still haven't warmed up to it, but there are a few shots I've always liked; 8:12-8:17 Sammy just walking up a ramp with the thumping of her footsteps just gives off an vibe of intimidation and determination. Also 31:50-31:55 was an awesome, frantic shot and the quick zoom to her POV is fantastic.
Remember, no action is taken without a resultant reaction. The nature of wisdom is knowing when, where and good time in taking the correct action. I did not say right action because I mean correct action.
This game was so original. It was basically a high budget indie game with a bigger budget.

I think this game adds alot of personality to Samus's character
Oh I can't wait to hear this. Personality where? No seriously I hear this all the time and no one can explain themselves. That Samus is stupid and unable to think for herself? I mean I guess there's that considering she actively refuses to use lifesaving equipment waiting for Adam's say so like the Varia Suit incident and the Wave Beam incident and technically speaking the Ice Beam incident too. That Samus respects all life? Because she specifically says that's what Adam says, not her. That she regrets leaving Adam's command and that she should've stayed with him? Because that's a pretty stupid motivation that you regret being a free spirit. Or maybe that she really loved the Baby that she met on SR388, then immediately gave it to the scientists at Serris station for study before she fucked off only turning back to answer a distress call because of Ridley and then never seeing the baby again before meeting again on Tourian. I don't know where the personality is other than saying that Samus has always been an inept idiot that can't think for herself that's only exclusive to this game.

To me, Metroid: Other M isn't a game, but a learning experience. It has a lot to teach us humans. Life, no matter what form it takes in this often cruel universe, should not be tampered with. We've altered our entire planet to suit our needs. Also, if you don't know the whole story, you don't know which side is the "insane" side. An AI with intelligence is one thing, but one with emotions and self-awareness? That's what Melissa, or MB, was, but when do you stop calling her a machine and start calling her human? Emotions tend to separate us from the rest of Earth's life. I consider them the strongest driving force in the universe. More powerful than gravity, faster than light, able to transcend time and space. Controlling emotions isn't the same as suppressing them, however. Samus Aran has taught me that life is sacred, and the life, the bond you make with and connect to someone special, isn't easily replaced. I have someone special to me too. She isn't lost to me yet, but I'm lost without her. The one person who held me together as a human being.
@Umos Take it from me, mistreatment is the biggest creator of villains in this world, or any other for that matter.

Wow, the writer for this game was awful. Only telling and no showing, way too much narrating, and they couldn't stop themselves from explaining everything at the end with a philosophy dump. They had absolutely no faith in the audience's ability to comprehend anything subtle. I'll give them credit for trying to make Samus a realistic woman with vulnerabilities and they had a fantastic IDEA for a story, but the delivery was a complete joke.
This is pretty much how Anime is , they must have had people that write/do Anime produce this story. If you've watched any Anime, they pretty always do this exact thing, lots of exposition, etc.

But think of the dedication it took for this layout to be projected. Yes, not in the best way, but it takes years for something like this to be pulled together. I personally fell in love with the story, plot line, and characters. Adam, most specially. His character had hardly any backstory, yet he fought to make the difference he was created to make. Samus Aran is a character of her own design and story. These creators brought new people to her eyes, creating a special part in her life. Yes, she is fictional, but the fact that they created it to seem that this is a real story was amazing. Yes, Metroid Prime and such is much better than this game, I still find it fascinating and strange as to how and when this story was concieved. Who is Adam to Samus truly? And Anthony? I would have wanted there to be less of a love story theme and more of the bounty Hunter we know. And I do agree with you on most parts, don't get me wrong, but i like to think of it as they wanted to add a more meaningful idea to their story. This is in no way to offend you, or your opinion. This is only what i believe was a pro and con of Metroid: Other M.
That was surprisingly very good. I expected a bad story from all the people saying M:OM ruined Metroid.

The problem with Other M is that it goes against the Metroid brand established by Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, and subsequent games. A brand is a product identity, and links attributes and unique selling points to that product. Super Metroid, and especially Metroid Prime, created a unique brand to the Metroid series. First, it sets Samus up as a badass character. She has nerves of steel, fights giants monsters, and is respected by the Galaxy because of that. Second, the games put you alone on an alien planet and has you explore. You have to find items to get to the next area. You have to use items to fight bigger and more powerful monsters. The games reward exploration.
Other M goes against the Metroid brand. First, Samus is portrayed as a melodramatic coward. She is not respected by her peers, she quivers in the sight of big monsters. The game does not reward exploration by blocking your path and making any items "authorized" by Adam Malchovick.
Also everything aside, the game just has terrible writing and character development. You don't need to be an expert to see that.
agreed ive been an avid fan of metroid since i was about 7 (im 30 now) and im hoping and wishing that metroid 4 is a better game than this was story wise.

That's great man! The first I played was Super Metroid. What is your favorite Metroid game?
I do believe there's room for good story and cutscenes, but it just needs to be done right.
To me, the best part of a metroid game should be silence. It is maybe the first thing that sets this series apart from any other game, and makes metroid prime one of my top 3 games. Cutscenes would work well if done right, but if you truly want a legit best metroid experience, i think you should hear barely any dialogue

I just want you to think on this line and it's implications. "Life, no matter what form it takes as it's born into this often cruel universe, should not be tampered with... that was Adam's philosophy." Sounds resonable on its own, but then I thought what this meant in regards to Samus.
Did anyone beside myself realize that Adam just insulted Samus and the chozo? Am I the only one who realizes that Samus is a genetically modified human that has been infused with Chozo DNA and cybernetically enhanced? She was not born as a human-chozo-cyborg hybrid. Is Adam straight up talking down to Samus as a immoral experiment? Does Samus realize that she herself is a "tampered Life form"?
Samus also handed THE BABY over to scientists to be experimented on with no regrets
He calls her a hero too, and it helped her survived their environment and training so maybe she was an exception
I never caught onto that before, but you are absolutely right. Another reason to hate Adam💀💀
they should've gotten jennifer hale to do samus' voice
I've never played this game but from watching the Cutscenes with gameplay elements to make it have more substance than just a movie worthy story in a game I think that it explains what a lot of people who played Super Metroid wondered about what Samus thought of her final moments with the Baby Metroid and the pseudo-maternal rage towards Mother Brain that granted her the power to destroy Mother Brain and what had happened afterwards it all I understand why Samus despises Ridley and feels scared when she sees him alive again she herself explains in the story that she developed PTSD from witnessing Ridley killing her parents as a child though indirectly since you see the results from it in her first moments confronting Bio Ridley and lastly the story does explain what was going on between the end of her time with the Chozo and the end of Super Metroid.
Everyone says it's bad. Yet it's the game that actually expands the universe outside power-ups and Ridley. Come on.
Samus is my girl....i just love playing metroid.
Cinderoid
Samus Aran In Cinderoid
thanks
The true sins of this game:
1. The invisible walls in some scenarios.
2. Tracking scenes are awfully designed.
3. The controller (what the hell Sakamoto was thinking!)
The script could be better in some parts but good game in the end. Samus is not Kratos, people, that is what this game is all about.
Its fun anyways...
Metroid: other M; the audiobook, the game
