- Rainfall Films and director Sam Balcomb present a live action short set in the Metroid universe, starring Jessica Chobot (Nerdist) and America Young (Halo 5). Learn more about Rainfall here: rainfall.tv
[ This non-profit film is not associated with or endorsed by Nintendo or its subsidiaries ]
The classic Nintendo franchise, Metroid, envisioned through the lens of 60s-70s science fiction cinema such as 2001, Alien, and Solaris: this was the concept for Rainfall’s most recent production. Instead of using a modern approach, a style was developed more in tune with the themes that inspired the first Metroid game in 1986: isolation, exploration, and the wonders of deep space.
We hope you enjoy our take on the adventures of Samus Aran.

I am 43yrs old. Ever since 1987 I have imagined a Metroid movie like this.
They did a really good job!
And in 2023 a metroid movie is now more probable than ever before
Can't believe I never saw this. Why is this year the YT algorithm sending me all the good stuff.
YT has been clutch during the pandemic.
Gorgeous.
Make a film, go fundme, kickstarter, whatever. This deserves to be made!!!
+Patrick Charlier They can't, they don't own the property. Even this could technically be taken down any second.
I second that Mr. J! Uhh.. I mean Patrick!
I would prefer Samus not talk though
+Patrick Charlier Definitely needs a better actress.
+Patrick Charlier I'd rather have another real Metroid game with outstanding atmosphere, gameplay and graphics!
Man, I kept expecting a Xenomorph to pop out of the works, then you went "2001: A Space Odyssey" on me. I can see alot of different inspirations coming together here.
interstellar as well
That's Metroid buddy, that's is what Metroid is.
Metroid was inspired by the Alien movies so...
I just love how she sighs and walks backward at 3:58 like she's so used to it, like "Ugh, here we go again..."
5 years later and still one of the greatest fan-made video game movies of all time.
A beautiful homage to Metroid and to classic science fiction. Magnificent imagery, beautiful mood and atmosphere, excellent visual and sound design, and marvelous music.
This shows the love and respect the creators have for Metroid, while still being able to take it in new and exciting directions. As well, since this is an independent production, it's a wonderful testament to what can be accomplished with the passion and drive to create.
Great job!
how did I never saw this what the heck, this is really well made
This is beautiful.... its perfect.
This film is even more exciting than a sit-down fistfight with the toilet as your balls are caught between the seat and the rim!
Insanely good quality.
Insanely shitty dialogue. Insanely weak Samus.
@@dredwick insane manchild hater.
@@tdog4176 Yeah, I will admit I hate on manchildren. Like, manchildren named T Dog.... biiiig time manchild.
@@dredwick lmao what a comeback how long did it take to pick ya brain on that one.???? Lmao scrub
@@tdog4176 Idk, how long did it take you to come up with the word "manchild"...? Did you come up with that yourself?
This is almost too perfect. I watch it every once in a while. Samus is my favorite video game character, and this is an absolutely perfect tribute to her. Thank you.
Samus is also my favorite video game character of ALL TIME 😁
Yeah cause that back is maaad
Samus Aran, along with Mario, Luigi and Sonic, are definitely my favorite video game characters 👌
this was great in every aspect. I want the whole series
“The Chozo are long gone.”
Raven Beak: *Are you sure about that?*
Ridley would been proud of you. Ridley, the director, not the… Well, you know.
+AIENKEI French represent !! :D
I felt the same athmosphere of his begin. Glad to see U here Aienkei, one of the single interesting & intelligent french YTer. Always a pleasure to listen to U
+AIENKEI M'aurait étonné de pas te voir dans les commentaires :)
not the giant purple space pirate (sometimes mechanical) dragon/pterodactyl?
That was really fucking cool. Damn. Makes me want another Metroid game.
+crzymn246 Please not Another M. j/k ;)
+crzymn246 yea, just one where Samus is a badass and not like Other M
+crzymn246 Ive wanted a new prime for aaages. hope the nx will bring it atleast.
+crzymn246 It's as real as the bounty hunter can get. Literally. I had to fix my eyes once I was done watching. They were glued to the screen. XD
*****
Yeah, I'm pretty impressed with what they could do in a short like this, I hope to see more of this in the future!
When Samus was infused with advanced Chozo DNA, they also taught her which Ulta eyeliner goes best with the power suit.
@ArtBuffalo You sound triggered. I make a joke about Samus being designed to be a mall rat and you get butt hurt big time and troll my comment..... and call me a troll in the process? You do realize that you are the troll here... you are all over my comments in other threads making antagonizing comments because you don't like my opinion and demand I change or else you are going to whine me to death.
Smfh.
@ArtBuffalo shut up.
color scheme is everything
That's why we need a metroid movie
Yeah !!! If that happens, I wish for 4 things only:
1.- Don't let Michael Bay do it. He'll ruin it 100% !!!
2.- Let Scarlett Johansson be Samus.
3.- Don't put make up on her.
4.- Put some philosophical theme and some violence.
And one that isn't just "Metroid: Other M: The Movie"
Yes but not a scared female next time👌🏼
@@danihz5610 yeah I get the fear thing but Samus is very specifically just.. not scared of this shit. She even remarks about it in her notes about certain items in Meteoid Prime about how she thinks she's supposed to feel fear and woe traveling to these planets and encountering hostile alien races but shebjust doesn't. She even questions herself if she's still a human anymore because of how well she handles pretty much everything. She claims at this point nothing scares or surprises her because she knows the unexpected and scary is exactly what to expect.
Samus is just a stone cold bounty hunter, who really doesn't care about where she is at or what she is doing, as long as it feels like the right thing to do for her. No enemy comes across as scary, not even Phazon Ridley who's in the Mangas basically superman without a kryptonite.
Samus doesn't do scared/frantic. She literally blew the core of a planet up then just... walked to her ship and casually left the planet as it was falling apart. Hell she space ponies a frigate into a moon while standing on the front of the damn thing.
She doesn't do fear, and I would like to see a movie iteration get a few things right, and that is Samus' character, not a girly woman who needs to have a man in her life or else she's just bleh, the Power Suitbdoesnt break off 8n pieces like the Spartan Armor from Halo, and is quite literally completely indestructible to physical damage. It can't like, be broken physically. It can lose modules but the suitbitself can never actually sustain damage, and Samus doesn't take the helmet or any pieces off it just, materializes on and off.
Visually, the spirit of Metroid. No question.
This was really well made, despite the fact I had barely any idea what was going on.
Ok this was amazing. Vissually stuning. Beautiful atmosphere. Some of the wideshots are just like the Kubrick ones. Strong influence from ALIEN and 2001 a space oddissey, what let me down was the acting from Samus. Not too much facial expresion, looking like a robot. But anyways this was edited in such a way like the old ALIEN from 79 even the only highlight grain filter and camera shaking is genius. Music is beautiful. 9/10 Congrats guys!!! Do more!!!
I think that was the intention, isn't Samus suppose to have Chozo DNA ? I kind of saw that with chobot, a Suttle alien like quality.
+Senior Adrian I think "Alien" came out in 1979 or 1980.
+Nick Duel Yes im corecting that right now. It was 79
+Senior Adrian Eh, I never figured Samus to be much of a facial expression girl anyways. Always figured her to be much more stoic.
+Senior Adrian The actor needs to act like a robot to fit into the role of playing Metroid the robot.
Having Samus make video logs is such an organic way to lead into the Chozo communicating with her.
l would have never in my entire life would have thought this ammount of quality was possible, specially 5 years ago... From now on l will watch every scifi movie with certain ,contemp, because they could have reached this level of execution ,but they deliveratedly decided not to
Reupload the film with all the Chobot scenes taken out and it'd be a 9/10 silent film
+Beers For Jeers Some people still haven't forgiven her for Mass Effect 3...
+pyroco101 i agree, i just cant stand her, maybe should ask that russian samus cosplayer, but i think she also cant act well.
She doesn't NEED to act, this is Samus we're talking about. The short film even uses some voice clips taken from Prime in certain scenes.
+pyroco101 there must've been like 30 reaction shots in this 10 minute video, imagine if they did that in Iron Man?
for real, and the wig was awful too
Awesome. I wonder if Nintendo executives watched this movie and said, "Wow! That was a very cool, mature, and serious take on the Metroid franchise! But fans definitely wouldn't want a video game like that. Oh no. No way. I think a sequel to Other M with chibi characters is what the series needs! Yes! We need to attract younger audiences! And kids are always on their phones these days, so maybe it should be a mobile game! Yeah! With microtransactions! Yes! We know what our fans want!"
Shut up
MiniBoo7Gaming
Baby narwhals.
Wtf
Link's AMV.
Those are some stellar punctuation skills you have there. Wait, I like Other M? M,just stop, I'm not a fan? What?
Baby narwhals, bro.
+chewface Damn, "bro" just cancels out all credibility wherever I see it. Congrats, you sound like everyone else and have already been forgotten.
This was insane ! Absolutely fantastic from beginning to end, congratulations to everyone who's worked on this project.
I went in expecting cringeworthy acting and an abusive use of lens flares to hide weak special effects, and this just blew me away !
It felt like Metroid (exploring alien worlds, dark places and tunnels, finding chozo artifacts), looked like Metroid (MAD props to the people behind the visual effects, they look absolutely fantastic ! A+ guys ! ), sounded like Metroid (god bless the sound staff !)...this is a better Metroid product than Other M will ever be, and truly the kind of fan content I'm looking for. Magnificent !
+ThePhazonRidley Can we make a petition to force Nintendo to back this project as a full length movie? Because that will teach them how to make Metroid into a truly cinematic experience!
+TwilightWolf032 She did a good job here, but I really think Yvonne Strahovski would be the best Samus pick. On top of her resemblance, she's got the badass attitude and look.
+TwilightWolf032 see my post at the top with the link to nintendo shutting down all fan made films of metriod.
+TwilightWolf032 Not to mention it will help market Metroid to a bigger audience.
+TwilightWolf032 please don't, at least try to get a better director.
I can’t believe I’m finding this just now. It’s so well made, the cinematography, music, atmosphere and depiction of Samus are just perfect! Gives me hope that a good Metroid movie is possible, just give this guy the director’s chair!
Metroid Prime will always be special to me. My first T rated game when I was 12ish. Just a few minutes with the game, I was hooked. The opening escape will always be one of the best to me. Truly one of the best trilogies in gaming ever, and now all I want and hope for is that Retro is working on a Metroid for the NX. This film was fantastic, and I really hope Nintendo sees the feedback to this so they can finally f***ing understand that the fans want a real Metroid game!
+Shankovich The opening level in the Space Pirate ship in MP1 is probably my favorite level in any video game ever.
+Shankovich I agree with Prime being one of the best trilogies ever.
+Shankovich retro is doing a new IP
+Shankovich Let's hope the do understand and don't give us Metroid Mini Golf or some stupid crap like that instead.
The opening escape from the space colony on Super Metroid is forever my favorite. But that one was a fantastic introduction into the 3D Metroid world.
5 years after this was made.. Still watching it.
This remains the best ever portrayal of Samus… despite the aging late 2000s makeup & hair & speech patterns… the tone & pacing of this are incredible.
I am immensely impressed with this. Now THIS is how you make a video game movie. The special effects were impressive, on par with what we see in Hollywood. The plot was creative and interesting. Most importantly, it drew me in. You managed to create suspense and tension in your scenes. You made me care about this version of Samus. I was pulled in and your film did not let me go until it was finished. I imagine the grainy film was intentional, trying to blend modern CGI with the aesthetics of older films like Alien. If this was your intent, you nailed it. Modern Hollywood could learn a thing or two from you.
I suppose my only gripe was the appearance of Samus outside her suit. I've never been a fan of the "sexy Samus" look. I know her appearance has changed throughout the years, but I was always a fan of the more modest-looking Samus from Metroid Prime. I felt she was wearing too much makeup, but this is a personal preference and a very minor gripe. Overall, this was fantastic and it left me wanting more. I wish you a successful future in film making. We are in need of your talent these days.
Nicely done, Jessica Chobot and everyone. :) Would be cool to see more set in this universe.
Am I the only wishing that when she came out of the portal she suddenly saw a Italian plumber facing off against a gorilla with an elf shooting arrows at both of them? No... just me... well nuts.
lol 😆
I think the different franchises deserve their own movies. Just slapping them all in a crossover with no reason is like another Wreck it Ralph. Total waste of potential. They're better off as their own thing.
Hahaha then Kirby arrives and eats them all. Hahahah. SUPER SMAAAAAASH BRRRROTHERS!!!
@@SgtSega he’s making a smash bros joke, man.
@@rm2kking I know. But I don't want anything like a Smash movie until these all get their own movies. Otherwise it's just another Wreck it Ralph or Space Jam New Legacy. Cameos for the sake of cameos. Yeah it's funny. I'm just saying we could have a Zelda movie. A Metroid movie. A Star Fox movie. A Mario movie (2022!)
Regardless of any inaccuracies in Samus's character, I enjoyed it.
how is that inaccurate? Samus has always been scared and uncertain, but she always found a way to pull through the most insane and dangerous obstacles. Even in Metroid Fusion you can see this side of her very clearly when she talks about Adam in the elevator. She is strong yes but she is not invincible. Also this movie takes place before she does her first contact with the chozo, so obviously she is not yet the big bad ass bounty hunter that she will become later on.
@@lajeandom Samus had bounty hunter training (field agent-like, think James Bond) by the Chozo since she was 6, so she's not scared and uncertain. What do you mean about when she talks about Adam in the elevator? And I think you misunderstood this part in the film (and the Samus-Chozo timeline), in the film the Chozo have left a message or a trail for her (and the Chozo have transcended and disappeared). It's not about her meeting the Chozo.
@ArtBuffalo The Chozo trained Samus to become a warrior since she was little, though I don't know about any bounty hunter training. She (most likely) also had additional training when she joined the GF
"Inaccuracies" lol sure. Is she strong and determined? Yes. Does she struggle with PTSD, depression, and loneliness after losing both her parents her chozo family? Yes. Does she still rise to the occasion to overcome these weaknesses in the end? Yes. We know Other M went over the top, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater (pun intended). We don't need her to be an emotionless robot because other m made her a bit too emotional.
Oh my god I love this. A Metroid movie couldnt be entirely this without being a commercial flop. But enough of the sense of isolation, lonelyness, mystery, and just atmosphere would make it unique
They should freakin make a movie like this, Alien style
nope
why not ?
I disagree. Hollywood pictures based on video games have always been notoriously unfaithful to the source material. This here is a prime example of a fan film being just that; made by fans, for fans.
Hey dudes, Metroid is inspired by Alien... Since the beginning.
I completely agree with AngelOfIron, don't you remember the movie Super Mario Bros ?
And yet, Warcraft did an excellent job of making a great film in the game's universe. I think there's still hope. Directors just need to change their approach.
So THAT's why Nintendo hasn't made any more Metroid games. Samus vanished into another dimension. I knew they had a decent reason.
+Vanessa Ride samus took her makeup kit with her
dude METROID PRIME FEDERATION FORCE
AUG,16,MIDNIGHT
ONLY FOR 3DS
Looks like horrible cash grab to me.Not at all a proper Metroid game.
Axelr0d 342
Federation Force is a complete departure from Metroid. It's a spin-off, not a true next gen Metroid title.
Would work canonically after Metroid Fusion. She was branded an outlaw after what she did. Though they would have change the ship entirely, and the suit would be more.....organic.
2023 and I still watch this from time to time. Ms Chobot, you nailed it (I'd happily watch a full length feature with you as Samus).
Ugh I love to see a Metroid game with a horror like atmosphere
Same!
Metroid Fusion
Metroid Dread
Echoes has some horror elements and the Valhalla in Corruption gives Dead Space.
Legendäry!!
+Domtendo Aber sowas von :)
Und das obwohl du noch kein Metroid gespielt hast :D ist aber wirklich u glaublich!
also ich bin wegen d4rky hier xD
+Yannick Tube Me too

This is the maximum amount of cool you can get!
This was a great watch. I would watch a full 2hour + movie like this. I love this game and would love to see more of this!
I see a lot of complaints about the portrayal of Samus's character in the comments. While I agree she could have been a little more badass, I think it should be pointed out that, given the lack of dialogue in your classic Metroid game, Samus's true character is WIDE open to interpretation. So a little creative license here I think is fine.
Overall this was a fantastic take on a Metroid scenario. I think it captured the spirit of the game very well; the sense of mystery and isolation in a hostile alien environment. Very well done. I'm surprised I didn't see this video when it came out years ago.
Jessica Chobot did a very good job at showing Samus, if you're a true fan and you played Metroid Fusion and the Metroid Prime Trilogy, you would see that despite Samus being tough as hell, she is sometimes scared and uncertain, which is normal....if u were alone on a hostile planet and having the full brigade of Space Pirates against you I think you would feel the same.
@@lajeandom Apparently for many Samus showing some fear before heroically collecting herself and taking action is far too much weakness. It's ridiculous. They want a robot.
No, she's suffered some of the most traumatic, horrid things since she was literally a Toddler. Getting shot at, loud noises, and grunting with uncertainty are NOT things that she would do by the time she was fighting space pirates in her full power armor. Other M was a tragedy. And internal monologue about " Hrm. I should be careful. And I like to reflect on the past sometimes" does not equal the level of inexperienced fear that was portrayed here. She's literally an amalgam of alien DNA, been through not only the harshest environments but also fought some of the deadliest creatures in the galaxy.......But sure. Let's just be okay with her getting scared of a door closing.
@@FateOfNines she like turned around fast in a ready response. y'all actually want a robot.
I totally agree. We think of Samus as some kind of superhuman and we forget that the suit is what gives her power. She goes into unknown situations and no one sees the person or the emotions she goes through because of the armor and weapons. Also we tend to put our own selves into video game characteristics to invest more to the game.
This is exactly what I would want in a Metroid movie. This was FANTASTIC. Thank you for this awesome piece of pure love.
+TrueMG To be honest, Samus was a little bit off. She was just not badass enough for a well trained bounty hunter. That is only one thing tough, overall this was indeed fantastic.
+Kloetee The actress was too soft spoken. When I think samus I think Angelina in tomb raider.
+Zinthaniel I don't. I like having Samus with some emotion - It shows off her human side
+Zinthaniel The only thing that tied the actress to Samus was the cheap wig they put on her. I LOVED the film, but Samus is a space bounty hunter that has gone through SOOO much! This actress doesn't project any of that. I do agree with +Jeb Eldridge about the whole emotion thing, but when I think of samus this actress just doesn't cut it.
+meeko94 Yeah, well obviously they picked her for her looks over her acting. She really does look like Samus... perhaps a bit of better directing and she could better portray Samus.
"No Metroids were harmed in the production of this motion picture"
Always thought of Samus as having nerves of steel, this one seems like a soon to be victim in a slasher film.
No
exactly, shes seen everything being a space bounty hunter trained for decades and all. you would think she would be ready for anything. knowing all and being prepared totally to kick ass. the predator not the prey.
yeah, I'm with ya, , maybe she didn't know about Samus and how she is.
To be fair she would have been acting based on a script. It's not her fault that they have given her poor direction. 12/10 for effort though.
No that's not that, the copyright
Maybe someone at Nintendo saw this and it’s the reason the Prime 4 logo is now a black hole. 🤔
Awesome job. Fantastically eerie atmosphere and ambience. Beautiful work on the models and animations and the geometry of the shots. From a purely sensational standpoint, it's perfect! Ace work!
But--BUT!!!--from a narrative perspective, I feel compelled to nag about the presentation of the character. Specifically, how apprehensive Samus appears to be. The nuances of her movements suggest she's unsure of every step she makes and action she takes, and each shot of the the actress' face shows an expression of fear. I get that she's in a creepy temple and would exude a proper sense of precaution, but precaution and looking like your going to pee yourself are not quite the same. Especially when investigating creepy, abandoned structures is probably a slow Monday for Samus.
Take the reaction she had to the door shutting behind her. You'd expect a legendary combatant of Samus' stature to spin around with gun at the ready to blast whatever might be sneaking up behind her. Instead, she kinda gives a spooked peek behind herself, gapes around in clueless whimsy, and proceeds her ambling. Something as simple as having her lead her eyes with her gun would have made the character look at least prepared for danger.
I also pictured samus as more of a serious and collected person than what was portrayed here.
I agree completely. Very well put.
Samus does suffer from anxiety and ptsd . Its not usually seem due to her being a silent protagonist. Metriod Zero mission showed this where she loses her abilities to summon her suit. Metriod other M also showed this when ridley is fought.
+Knightofjustice I always felt like she was calm in Zero Mission, and resorted to stealth due to her major decrease in capabilities. She could still kick major ass, but stealth would be more precautious when you're lacking a power suit.
Other M is...I don't know. I want to say it's non-canon but Nintendo has yet to say otherwise despite all the hate towards Samus being almost completely vulnerable and weak character-wise. Then again, go figure it's Team Ninja.
I'm with you. Love the gritty visuals. The world she inhabits is exactly as I would imagine it. I agree that Samus is a little too "doe eyed" for my taste here. I'll give them the benefit at this stage though. Maybe this is still the beginning of her origin story. Maybe she hasn't been through enough trial to develop the confident strut of a seasoned warrior. I actually thought that the portrayal of the Chozo as a recorded image of Samus was much more the attitude I would expect from the Samus Aran in my mind. Stoic and Direct. Still, Great work! Enjoyed it so much!
Probably my fifth time watching this since discovering it a year or two ago. Still wonderful to watch. Masterfully done. Hope to see more by you.
Who wants an another Metroid Prime style game ? in HD ! With good texture, effects !
Jessica Chobot really nailed this. People who disagree clearly aren't familiar with who Samus really is.
Totally agree! There should have been a full Meteoid movie, or mini series starring her! She's breath-taking!
This was fantastic. I'm so happy you all got this together. A question I have is: is Samus supposed to be so panicky and unsure of herself? I felt like her character was a little lacking in the hard-boiled bounty hunter department...
I kind of agree with this. That was the only thing that bothered me with this film. Obviously no one is a complete 100% badass with no feelings, but they made her feel like she was unsure of how to handle herself. A very minor complaint though.
+Gehab I know
+Steve Hooper I blame Metroid: Other M
+Steve Hooper I completely agree. Samus is a HIGHLY trained bad ass bounty hunter who doesn't take shit from anyone. Think Wonder Woman with an Iron Man suit. I'm so tired of people making her weak and bumbly.
+Steve Hooper Very much agree with this. Also, the Samus I have in my mind wouldn't need her ship to help her with the pirates.
1) First morph ball scene was awesome!
2) Ridley was underutilized...
He was too big to render.
The visual effects were very good, but Samus Aran should be a little less 'scared prom queen' and a little more 'bad-ass chick'.
+FragileMediaNKY Agreed.
For an experienced bounty hunter, she seems very fragile and and acts like an amateur.
samus never acted like badass in real metroid stories either.
+ShadowFalconPictures Have you played metroid? Not other m. any other one.
The plot of the original metroid went something like this:
Oh hey look, the headquarters of a faction that is waging war against the strongest military force in the known universe. I think I'll go there by myself, kill all of the leaders, destroy the bio-weapons they are developing and blow the most important part of the base off the surface of the planet. After that I will strip down on the surface of a highly dangerous planet, wave at the camera, and fly off into the sunset.
Your mind is clearly closed. This conversion is over.
+Supa creator ok but let me say this to you first. just go check out the most badass male super Heroes, anime characters and video game characters. because as you can see most badass male characters are wearing a skin thight jump suits, regular clothes and some of them are half naked.
Love it. Uh, let's just hope there's a second to this or maybe a full movie about Metriod.
I'm 59, I remember when the first Metroid game came out and I loved it. so this is so totally cool !
I forget how old I was when the game first came out, teenager, early 20's maybe. oh how time flies !
This proves that fans can do a much better job handling Metroid than Nintendo.
+MetroidFan The last Metroid game was done by Team Ninja, not Nintendo themselves.
+HelloKittyMeowable1 Well...Nintendo Enabled them to do it so...Nintendo is to Point Fingers on letting it happen instead of doing a Delay for the sake of doing it right.
+MetroidFan Federation Force isn't even out yet.
+MetroidFan those 4 words are meaningless. You don't know its a bad game, its not even out yet. you can't draw conclusions about the game sucking or not having a Metroid feel from a minute and a half of footage
+SonofKalas22 I'm going to go ahead and say that all 3 legend of zelda games for the cdi will be better than federation force hahaaaaaaaa!
Imagine a Nintendo Cinematic Universe..!
+ξχλlτ Josн Yeah, its called Smash Bros
+Rych3rInLyf3 something tells me you don't know what cinematic means.
+ξχλlτ Josн I always thought it would be amazing if Nintendo announced a cinematic universe, like MCU and DCU, with a Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon movie etc. and then bring them all together in a Smash Bros. movie!
+ξχλlτ Josн A "cinematic universe" implies all the characters are in said universe. I know you just mean decent flicks like Marvel has accomplished, but I prefer to keep the franchise universes separate, as much as I love Smash Bros.
+ξχλlτ Josн I have literally been saying this since the MCU was announced.
This needs to be a netflix series frfr
@Wango Bango the entire series does have a story and makes sense this short made plenty of sense besides her constantly showing emotions wdym?
@Wango Bango you don't know Samus or the chozo, AND BLUE phazon so why would you get it.......
Lol Wango Bango must have felt so embarrassed
I'd watch this on there, gang...
So they can ruin it and make it woke? no thanks
6:47 because you can't have Metroid without a countdown
True
Wouldnt be metroid otherwise 😂
But apparently you can have Metroid without any Metroids :/
xTheToolx yep
This is so good
+Blimey Cow WOAH BLIMEY COW :D
Didn't know you were a Metroid fan Blimey.
My only beef is the obvious makeup...Samus never struck me as a girl who'd put on foundation and eyeliner before sweating in a suit. But otherwise
I NEED THIS AS A MOVIE
Yeah its canonical that Samus doesn't do make-up. Mentioned in zeromission, other M *shudder* and the mangas that Samus gives elss than no fucks about make-up. She even lambasts a federation agent for lipstick and foundation saying "space pirates and metronidazole don't care how good you look.
I think the only makeup that Samus wears is Eyeliner, I think it shows quite a bit
Of course it could be nothing more than the design of the eyes and that she does not really wear any makeup
Pretty sure an advanced alien space suit would mange to keep her body temperatures at normal levels to keep her from over heating, and wicks away her sweat
I came back to the fantastic Metroid fan film to say, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond!
Samus is a warrior goddess, not a scared girl.
then Ridley shows up. Samus may be one of the toughest of badasses ever produced by Nintendo, but even she has times when she's afraid.
Agreed.
YES! Thank you!
Did you even play the games?
Isn't this supposed to be the 1st encounter? So wouldn't have to work her up to the warrior goddess with nerves of steel? Even Ripley from Aliens had a 1st time. I feel this was absolutely fantastic.
This video immediately made me want to listen to the Metroid Prime 3 intro theme.
But really this is the best Metroid fan film that's ever been made.
The only thing I would've done to make it better is 1: Add a scene where the Arm Cannon is actually articulated and visually changes into the Missile Launcher in a First Person scene, and 2: replace the Iron Man-esque shots of Jessica Chobot's face with some closeups of her face through her visored helmet.
My favorite thing they did with this movie is that they made her Arm Cannon a combination of both the Prime version and the Other M version in a way that looks AMAZING when it glows. I love it.
+Cody Boutilier Agreed! Though it upset me a bit when she actually used her missiles. She only had 4 and Didn't use the seeker multishot DX
I pictured Samus as a more serious and collected person, but good job nonetheless. It was a little too depressing to my taste, but you guys did a respectable job creating this video. I hope Nintendo is taking notes.
"subtle"
I had always imagined her to be more like xena warrior princess my self. it's kinda sad that the 11 or so minutes of this video is better than all of other m. some day nintendo will kno what we want in a metroid game
Samus rides around in a ship that looks like her helmet. I think she has a sense of humor.
Both her ship and her suit were designed by the Chozo, she had nothing to do with that fact.
Apple Woods
Well that's uninspiring. It should start with the suit and go from there. If everything is the Chozo then you only take away from Samus.
Sakamoto is off of Metroid for a reason. Many did not like the direction he went with the series.
The MOMENT Samus said “It’s a chozo signal.”, I was drawn in. I was hooked. I wanted to know more, what happened? Who sent the signal? What’s gonna happen?
And then I finished the vid and I wanted more. This was SO good, 7 years later
So....when is the next installment coming?? This was pretty cool.
Who else is here after seeing the Metroid: Attack of Ridley short movie? This is still the best Metroid short movie ever
All i hope is , Rainfall release a new Short Movie!!! Mindblowing!! maybe even more than another MP4 teaser!
Here I am xD Yeah, this is still leagues better. The enviroments, the atmoshpere, the music, how samus moves around. It dives full into the original material that inspired metroid (alien) and add 2001 a space odyssey vibes to it. The direction and photography are great. My only problem is with the actress, I think she has too much make up on and always seems too disconcerted. But this short is still AMAZING, nonetheless
Great video. However, the Samus in my head doesn't have creaky voice. She speaks up with confidence.
MeanMrMustard1 Word!
Yep. In my head shes always sounded like jennifer hale
This is so gawddamn awesome. Certainly makes me hungry for more Metroid content. Well done, Rainfall!
Still blown away by how well done this is
The makers of Dead Space should get together with Nintendo and make Metroid a horror game. That would be cool.
Noah DC nice
Noah DC hell yeah
prime 2 and fusion...
That's not what Metroid is about, It's an exploration game with FPS and platformer aspects
Which is what makes it such a great game. Much like Resident Evil, they make completely different games depending on what their fans want. Some fans wanted a shooter, some wanted the exploration type. Thus they made both.
This is phenomenal! It feels just like something directly from the Metroid franchise.
I always kind of imagined that if an actress were to portray Samus inside the Varia Suit that it would be done a la RDJ Iron Man.
Super job! Begs for a sequel and could easily be made into a series. So many unanswered questions that can turn into subplots. The protagonist has so much potential to reveal herself and her objectives. There must be more to follow... please?!
play the games
@@CarlosAlbertoAndres OK! Will have to do that.
@@davidvaughn7752 here is a suggestion for you in order to play them in chronological order:
1. Metroid Zero Mission
2. AM2R (Another Metroid II Remake)
3. Super Metroid
4. Metroid Fusion
5. Then you can take the Prime Trilogy as it happens in between Metroid 1 and 2 or you can play them in any order you want :)
All the games can be played via emulators on your computer, except Prime 3 which uses the Wii Remote technology.
Ok there you go!
@@CarlosAlbertoAndres : Thank you Carlos!
Reminiscent of "Aliens" and other early science-fiction classics, "Metroid: The Sky Calls" was lovingly crafted in just the right way to gave me chills. The in-helmet and point-of-view shots, as well as the brilliantly crafted HUD of the visor, made me nostalgic for Metroid Prime, but it's the spectacular special effects that really steal the show! Story-wise, this short was fairly simplistic, but since Metroid is often more focused on the action, it felt true to form.
The lead actress, I'm sad to say, seemed to be lacking the Samus Aran "feel" and classic Metroid brand of heroism that made Samus such an icon of female willpower and strength throughout much of the history of the series (with the arguable exception of "Other M"), though the actress' facial expressions were spot-on for conveying the emotional tone of any given scene. She wasn't distracting enough to take away from the general atmosphere when she was on-screen, and her voice felt enough like Samus that I can give her a pass.
I am disappointed, however, in a few minor details regarding the Metroid universe. Although the visor, shielded door, Morph Ball, Hunter Gunship, and Chozo statue were exceptional use of canonical Metroid lore, a few small bits stood out to me. Notably, the unusual Space Pirates ship and the decidedly non-Chozo architecture of the ruins. Though reminiscent of early sci-fi movies, such incongruities felt out of place to me as a fan of the series, even if they were perfectly in line with the feel and tone of the film. I completely understand that this is a fresh, new take on the Metroid universe, but it's so well established by now that I have difficulty letting it go so easily. Besides, they forgot Samus Aran's beauty mark! I know it's a trivial element to complain about, but come on, it's so iconic of her!
The feel and tone of an old movie were held up wonderfully without dropping the exploration and wonder of Metroid. Even with such spectacular special effects, the tone is held throughout, which is quite a feat for an independently funded film company like Rainfall. The film grain, color palette, hologram effects, credit sequence, and heck, even the disclaimer at the end, were just about enough to trick me into believing I was watching a flick from the 70's, despite the modern CGI and motion capture effects!
All in all, I believe "Metroid: The Sky Calls" holds up the legacy of the Metroid universe while simultaneously breathing a much-needed breath of new life into it. Because let's face it, "Metroid Prime: Federation Force" sure as hell failed at that.
Samus' beauty mark was only added in Other M and then put in Smash 4, it isn't "iconic" of her at all.
IMPOSSIBLE!!!! she has all her power ups at the end of the video
I come back every few months to watch it again, every time video game adaptations into live action come up in conversation. It remains perfect. I think what’s impressing me the most on this viewing is the sound design. Spectacular score and soundtrack. Amazing use of familiar game sounds with fresh instrumentation. 10/10
I like this in general, but I'm not sold on the portrayal of Samus. She seems a little bit too...um...panicky. No offence to Jessica Chobot, but in every scene she looks just absolutely terrified by everything. It's not really jiving with the image I have in my head of the confident bounty hunter who blasts her way through strange and hostile alien worlds on a daily basis.
+WiiManElite Other M and her reactions with Ridley made sense, though. Ridley was finally dead, in her mind. The creature who she saw kill her family was finally destroyed and yet, here it was, right in front of her. ...resurrected by the very same people who she had worked with for a long time. Add to that the links into her younger life and the emotions that she'd have dragged up by those memories and seeing her father figure for the first time in a long time and...well...her reactions make sense.
She was still bad-ass in Other M...still stoic and strong at the right times and you still felt like a powerful hero when playing her.
+nintendoluigi I defend Other M because I really liked the gameplay over prime. And at the time I first played it, I loved the story for the whole whodunnit thing. The sexist crap though, 100% bullshit, agreed. And it wasn't as objectively good as the prime series, no.
+nintendoluigi Other M is an official game made by people who have full rights to do whatever they want to do with their characters and franchise.
If Sakamoto says Samus should cry then it's because that was her personality from the very beginning.
I also think this short film did a good job representing the TRUE personality of Samus, she's a sensible woman but also strong.
+KefkeWren The courageous experience fear, they just handle it differently. Rather than getting the hell out of dodge she accepted the invitation. Pretty ballsy imo.
I mean, Ballsy still applies to heroines... their balls are just located a bit higher, and they're much bigger.
Didn't feel like how Samus would react/talk. She's supposed to be the ultimate armor-plated bad ass, but here she came off as a timid sorority sister, looking for her missing lip gloss. Nicely done overall though - certainly makes me wish Nintendo would make something like this happen for reals.
This would be a great way to announce a new Metroid game.
It would probably pull as much attention as those live action Halo trailers. Probably more so when people realize its a Nintendo game.
+Malicious Hero I imagined mailing a "true gamer" who thinks that big N's stuff is for babies a copy of the Manga based on this game, and a note.
+Andres Acosta The Metroid Manga isn't really anything to be proud of. It spawned Other M, after all.If you want someone to take Metroid seriously, tell them to play Super and the Prime games.
Loren Hill Well, at least when I learned Samus' backstory, it gave me a bit of a Harry Potter vibe, because of how dark it was, and Samus is basically Harry, and Ridley is basically Voldemort...nevermind. Also, I kinda feel like the Prime trilogy is a bit overrated. Not bad, just overrated. Kinda like how I think Chamber of Secrets was the best HP, not Prisoner of Azkaban.
Loved this, I could watch a full 3 hour film. Great work. Thank you for creating this.
Always remember that when a billion light years from anywhere be sure your makeup is perfect and get your hair done. You'll never know, Mr Right might just be around the corner.
lol
LOL - well Samus always looks perfect in the games,
so I'm not surprised that they did the same here.
Yeah, and if it's a Japanese production, make sure your coiffure is in your face obscuring your vision for the epic fistfight at the end of the show.
Mwaaaaahaaaahaaa! Yea she looks fantastic!
Jεε¥☯ñG You should learn to respect other people's creative opinion on things buddy. How this fan film somehow seemed to have pissed you off like it did is really unhealthy.
Love the aesthetics and music. Did not love how Samus looked like a scared little girl in every scene.
I mean I haven't played any of the newer metroid games but from what I've seen from smash bros, shes a lot tougher and gritty. Don't get me wrong this animation is AMAZING and I would never be able to accomplish this. All I'm saying is samus is a little too girly. It even shows it when she's in the suit. she kinda walks like a school girl with her knees close together and her back bent. Samus isn't so wide eyed either. She's usually squinty eyed and looks like she's about to kick ass
Ben Yeenis True.
Perhaps she's "girly" because she's female, you thundering dumbass. Also, when you say "walks like a schoolgirl", which part are you mad at, that she's educated, or that she's a woman? Seriously, what in bleeding hell are you even trying to convey with that statement? Rethink your entire life. Starting with the entirety of that ignorant comment.
Frag Mental just because she's female doesn't mean anything about how she acted "girly". A guy could act the same way the actress did. If you look at her yes she does act like a school girl and by that we mean her attitude and portrayal. How she acts completely scared and insecure even though her whole gaming franchise (with the exception of one game) involves her acting with the attitude of doom guy mixed with master chief. Don't be so dense next time. Besides it's kind of ironic to be bitching about someone else's opinion on how the female role was too stereotypical. In other words the role looked heavily weak and could be swapped with a more strong independent acting actress. Learn to understand what others mean and maybe you won't look like the idiot you just made yourself out to be.
Frag Mental he’s saying samus is waaay more stoic than the actress, in these situations samus analyzes her surroundings and acts fast then sighs in relief not panic breathe then use the grapple beam. Samus wouldve kicked off the rocks or used her jet booster thingies showing her athleticism more than her beams
@@matthewwilliamlosure You like Other M.
If this was a full length film, id shit myself.
This was really fucking impressive
The budget must be high!
Samus wouldn't be worried, that's where Other M messed up as well, that's my only problem with it
after all, she is still a human, with all
Technically only half human (maybe less post-Fusion), and a highly experienced, highly trained bounty hunter with several decades of training.
but a human after all, even the better and harder have bad times, you see what she pass
Valid point Sir
Except (outside of Other M), we never seen a real moment with helmet-less Samus. Humans tend to be afraid. It isn't bad. It reminds us that we're alive and that we need to be careful.
Loved this, Metroid needs more love than it's getting
I think of Samus like Batman. Lets use Tim Burton's Batman as an example, the Joker killed his parents, he thought he died(I know he didn't know it was Jack yet but it's still kinda similar) then he came back scarier than ever. And what does he do? He kills him.
Now I know Batman shouldn't kill, and Tim Burton messed that up but that's irrelevant. The point is, both of their parents were killed at a tender age, both witnessed their parents death, both don't get scared when they see their parents killer, instead, they think of it as a perfect time to avenge their parents death.
This is why so people don't understand why Samus freaked out when she saw ridley in OtherM. I know it would be a traumatic event, but Samus has almost no fear. When I saw the Quadraxis for the first time I panicked so hard, but Samus just calmly walked up to it and was totally ready. When she saw Ridley in Prime3 she shot the moment she saw it, and tried to brutally kill him by shoving her gun in his mouth Even though she probably thought he died(though I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't, considering she's killed him so many times), She was ready when she saw him again.
Samus, like Batman, isn't meant to be relatable. She's meant to be a hero, fearless, courageous, and awesome. TeamNinja tried to make her more of a character, but that's not who Samus is. She's a symbol. And I know I'm completely quoting Christopher Nolan on that, But it's true.
+Sheogorath117
I do agree, but I don't get why we can't appreciate a stone-cold bad-ass as an actual characterization. Personal development is for down time, not out in the field. Samus is the action hero in a sci-fi horror, who switches on nightvision when the lights go out and starts blasting instead of gasping and taking a hit. Dealing with trauma comes later; Samus is focused, because if she wasn't, she would die. We don't call super heroes non-characters for their "I'm a badass" moments when those are their least risky moves and they spend the rest of the time getting recked. That's not tension either. It's not about uncertainty in a film, of course the outcome is certain, you know when the movie ends. Action is tense because you imagine the tension. Let the viewer be scared, let Samus deal with it. She's not hiding in a closet for us to be scared with, she's bold and dangerous.
Samus is a symbol because of her character, not lack of it. Just because we are left to imagine what isn't shown of that character doesn't mean it's nonexistant. But Samus's character still isn't one that allows her to gasp at the damn lights going out. Let her turn and aim to acknowledge it, not flash with panic she shouldn't let herself feel.
+Micah Gamble
That's certainly true. You're right, they could make Samus have a character and be appreciated by fans. All they would have to do is make her act like Samus would act
And you know what, I think even in the Prime games she had character development. In Prime2 she closed the eyes of a federation marine, giving her a vibe of honour. In Prime3 she was showing emotion when (spoilers) her fellow hunters died.
I totally don't care whether or not Samus speaks or not, but even if she doesn't she can still be a character. Samus has never really had a soulless husk like Gordon Freeman(even though I like Gordon Freeman.)
And aren't those the strongest forms of characterization anyways?
I can see it being exceptionally hard to deliver a feature length film effectively without dialogue though. I'd still be cringing if I ever got a vibe for even a second that she was anything short of Wonder Woman meets Boba Fett, personally. It's okay to demonstrate the human side of being alone and exposed to extreme stress and peril where it's safe, but I'd hope we'd just start with the origin story and move from there if this is the kind of characterization they or anyone else uses. I could personally accept that a barely fully Chozo-trained and augmented Samus would still have more normal reactions to things. Maybe grow into the mindset of a veteran.
Not to disapprove of this short, I always love this kind of content, but critique and commentary of a hardcore fan is hopefully welcomed when respectful like I think this has been.
***** Yes, I think if they ever make a full length Metroid movie an origin story would allow them enough freedom to mold her character whilst keeping fans happy.
After all the only real origin story Metroid has is a manga. And that doesn't really give Metroid justice. No offense to manga's of course.
Nah, I fully agree. It's it's own respectable medium to be sure, but it can be lacking.
I don't feel the need to say what's already been said on the portrayal of Samus here. I will instead congratulate the absolutely stellar VFX work here. Especially when she comes out of the morph ball and her suit glows in the darkness? Absolutely stunning
While it was ok... lots of flash & CGI... the actress couldn't seem to make up her mind on how to act.... she look scared most of the time. I just don't picture Samus being that scared especially when there was nothing there to be afraid of.
Samus is an explorer. Explorers need to always be cautious. She wasn't afraid. Just cautious.
In the games she wasn't an explorer, she was sent to take care of the Metroid by the Galaxy Federal Police. The look on her face is not one of being cautious either.
Cosmicwolf And in order to find the Metroids she had to explore.
And yes. That can be called a face of caution. Look at her reactions in the games. Her body reacts as she does in this short film.
Samus isn't an Explorer, she's a Bounty Hunter, big nuance there :)
Julien NTUMBA A bounty hunter that explores. The titles can be used interchangeably.
This was absolutely incredible. Wish it was a lot a lot ALOT longer
No one can say it better than you.
Dude, movie studios on a million trillion dollar budget spend 1-3 years making a movie. This is low budget, but has a great story line and looks great, this must have taken years at least. Cut them a bit of slack. They may develop a sequel yet.

TRUE!
I just discovered this movie and man... This is amazing.
Very well done, full of films references & the best live action of Metroid so far.
Well done! I would pay for such a full length movie.
I am such a big fan of Metroid !!!
I love everything about this movie! Make a longer one!
It looks well produced and awesome; but is it just me or is it 11 minutes of hardly anything happening?
+The Gaming Goose Welcome to the Metroid Franchise? Especially in the Prime games, you can easily experience 30-45 minutes of very little happening while you figure out what's going on in order to get to the next action sequence.
It's a lot in the money department with special effects costs
Andre Berry Doesn't make it less boring.
+The Gaming Goose Like nothing happened lol
Honestly I was disappointed with this, then again I shouldnt have any expectations to begin with. But no one here would disagree, it could have been much better.
+The Gaming Goose I see it more as a conceptual moving mood board for how the tone of a film might look.
I absolutely love this video
Amazing live action Samus in a sort Metroid movie. It's awesome to see her action with her suit's weapons, or abilities with her ship's weapons too and computer. I love the actress doing Samus, and wish that she could reprise that role again.
