    I trust any doctor that will exhaust all conservative treatment before considering surgery. Unfortunately, my doctor didn't use the same approach, and I trusted him. My doctor left me with a toe deformity which triggered balance issues after performing bunion surgery on my right foot 12 yrs ago. I've been trying to manage my condition the best way I can through target exercises. No surgery should be taken lightly.

    The reason for 3rd toe problems after correction of 2nd toe surgery is you fuse the joints. Just take off head of intermediate and close capsule followed up with closing the skin. All can be done through a semi elliptical incision over bony prominence.

    I have a bunion that showed about three years ago and my second toe is slightly bent but my third toe is a mess, curled in and bent. I can't even get my shoes on.

    Young man thank you so much! I went to the foot doctor. 8/29/2016 initial encounter closed nondisplaced fracture of the phalanx of the lessor toe of the left foot. Dr. Says its not a hammer toe its just longer than the big toe.

    Both of my pinky toes are short and curl under (can’t really straighten them out manually either) it makes it uncomfortable to walk/run after awhile. Are there things that I can do to help, or would surgery be ok in this instance?

    All my toes are hammer toed. I have tried the exercises and the orthotics. I am going with surgery and being asked to be placed under a general anesthesia

    I have been suffering from hammertoes since I was a child. I haven't worn sandals or any open toed shoes because of it. Since it has been so long is surgery the only option?

    My big toe has started curling down after I fractured the tip of it . Sports Med podiatrist says I need the surgery. Since the big toe is very important, I'm worried about surgery. Do any of the alternatives work for my situation?

    I had a stroke on my right side in May of 2021. I now have hammer toes on my right foot and it hurts to try to walk. What do you suggest I do?

    My fourteen year old son has this in the middle toe of his left foot. We just noticed this a few months ago. The toe is very inflexible and he says his foot hurts at the bottom in the middle. What can we do?

      You should see a podiatrist and get a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. In the meantime here are some options for home treatment of pain on the bottom of the foot:

    What about the tendon procedure? Flexor tenomity?

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  7 лет назад

      If there is no bone adaptation (meaning you can still straighten the toe out completely) a flexor tenotomy can help make the toe straighten out. It is usually not a permanent solution but can give several years of relief in some cases.

    hello how you doing? why can't the hammer toe be broken back into place?....

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  8 лет назад

      It essentially can. That is hammertoe surgery. We recommend avoiding hammertoe surgery if you can as it can be unpredictable how your foot will respond to the surgery over time. You can learn more about hammertoe surgery here: www.footankle.com/toe-conditions/hammertoes/

    What pads do you recommend for helping straighten hammer toes? I don’t have pain at all but don’t like how they look :(

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  6 лет назад +1

      There are pads you can use to hold the toes straighter while you wear them but they will not help straighten them long-term. The only way to straighten hammertoes permanently is surgery. Here are some of the best pads: www.footankle.com/self-care/hammertoe-home-treatment/

    what if your second bone grew too long my dr recommends shortening it they showed me how far up compared to the others and i have to have bunion surgery

    • @Footankle
      @Footankle  7 лет назад

      Although there is no way for me to comment on specific situations, in general we recommend surgery only if all conservative treatment including custom orthotics has failed to reduce pain. You can find some home treatment hints here: www.footankle.com/self-care/bunions-home-treatment/ . Also don't have surgery unless you get at least one second opinion.

      If the 2nd bone is too long then most people have pain at the 2nd metatarsal head. You can find information on eliminating that type of pain here: www.footankle.com/self-care/ball-feet-pain-home-treatment/

    So you think we should avoid surgery but 4 of my toes on both my foot have the bones shifted are shifted in the joints and my toes are going under my other toes and I'm walking on them plus I have a bunions on the outside of my foot on both my feet and and I have a hammer toe on one of the 4 toes on one foot. But my big toe is fine on both feet. So would you say I probably need surgery? My foot doctor said he's never seen feet as bad as mine on anyone. He has perfected a procedure of his own that he trains other drs to do called the Bricker procedure that heals more quickly and is less painful so I'm happy about that part. His name is Dr. Bricker and he's in Springfield, Missouri and he's a great Dr.

    • @Footankle

      I didn't say avoid surgery, just that it should not be the first line of treatment and bunion surgery tends to be over-utilized. Your doctor may be great, but I tend to be skeptical of anyone claiming they have developed a "new and better procedure" unless they have done rigorous research and published that research in a peer-reviewed journal. I would strongly suggest at least one and preferably two or three additional opinions before proceeding with surgery.
      Here is more detailed information on how to find a competent bunion surgeon:

      @@Footankle Thank you. I have had 3 opinions before deciding on a doctor. One of the doctors wanted to just amputate my third toe. I told him he'll no. I'm 66 years old and I'm not gonna start cutting off my body parts just so he can make a buck for an amputation. Since I wouldn't agree to amputation he said he couldn't help me. Lol. There was no reason to amputate a hammer toe. That Dr. was an idiot. The other two doctors I got opinions from said they'd never amputate my toe.
      The doctor I chose is very good and the procedure he developed he teaches and trains other foot surgeons in Springfield, Mo., and he even teaches in other states as well on occasion. Hes no idiot thats for sure. You should call him and ask him about his procedure. Its called the Bricker procedure. His name is Dr Bricker and he's in Springfield, Mo. You may be surprised at what you might learn about the Bricker procedure. He told me I will be walking on my foot after surgery as well. He said If I need crutches I can use them but I will have a boot on with a raised heel to keep my toes from touching the floor after surgery. Thanks for answering my questions, I appreciate it very much. With 4 toes messed up on both my feet I have to get them fixed as my quality of life sucks right now and they are very painful. I really don't have much of a choice if I want to get my quality of life back, is how I see it. I can hardly wear shoes at this point. Thank you
