    I would like to see a video of active exercises that can treat hammertoes. What kind of stretches truly work? I see conflicting things on you tube sites, but you are clearly knowledgeable about this condition. Thank you for considering a video on stretching and strengthening.

      I will try to do that but really unless they are flexible there is minimal that can be done. I like the idea of correct toes, but long term improvement is not too great with exercises

      All of my hammertoes are flexible and painful. You mentioned that exercises don’t work. Did you ever make a video on exercises?😊

    It’s maddening when shoes like Lems are not readily available at a retail store, but they have an over abundance of torture devices for your feet.

    What percentage of hammer toe surgeries are successful and do you need to address the bunion as well ( though bunion doesn't hurt)?

  • @bobfoss9446
    @bobfoss9446 Год назад +1

    Yes doctor. I'm 77, retired military, and don't know if I have hammer toe as second toe doesn't go up, just bent. i put Voltaren and it takes some discomfort away. Sometimes thicker socks can help. Don't want surgery as discomfort comes and goes but are wide shoes or little pads likely the answer? Thank you.

    Thank you so much for your thorough information! I don't live anywhere near the Mass area (sadly). In fact I'm in North Carolina. Can you help me find a good podiatrist down here? My son is the one with the issue, has had it for YEARS, and the podiatrist he's been going to is happy to just trim the callous on the balls of his feet every few months. The pain is increasing, has negatively affected his ability to walk, and I think we need more intervention than trimming callous. I don't know how to find a good doctor! Thank you!!

    I gradually came into this problem with the toes on my left foot following a stroke. I am 36 years old now and I cannot walk as this has gotten progressively worse, I am to have surgery next month on all toes/tendons. I would describe it as a claw foot and it set off like a nervous reaction anytime my foot touches something or I put movement through it.

    I have been told by three podiatrists an d md's that only amputation is my choice. Second toes on both feet fir years. Have seen doctors several times. Now have overlapping toes as well. Never wore wrong shoes. Wore "nurses oxfords" for years. No high heels. New Balance are only shoe that affords less pain. Had prescription orthotics as well. All to no avail. Difficult and painful at all times.

      i think some of us just have bad formed bones in our feet, which contributes to this. I too have worn good shoes, and still hammertoe. I have long toes. I'm about to try some of the toe separators, etc.. which i have tried, and then stopped. Amputation seems extreme. REad above, person had amputation, and then hammer toe became rigid. I'm considering trying some of the "barefoot" type shoes. Dr Pelto's links above link to some interesting shoes sites. But i'm not feeling real hopeful either.

    I've had 2 bunion surgery (2014/2016) now. I'm dealing with a very painful hammer toe.. What do you suggest? I think it is rigid because I can't even bend my toe, and my shoes are very uncomfortable. I wear custom-made orthodoics daily, but it still doesn't stop the pain

    My second toe became a rigid hammer toe within 5 months after great toe amputation. The second toe aso fractured at the bone near metarsal joint. Why is my toe rigid now?

    • @DrPelto
      @DrPelto  Год назад +1

      After amputation, the other toes have to work now, which is why it is more rigid. It is compensating for the missing toe.

    Hi Dr ☺️
    I have a lot of pain on my little toe only when I wear flip-flops. I live in Florida so that is very frequent.
    I didn’t see anything in the video for that toe in particular. Do you have any suggestions prior to surgery? The pain is getting pretty severe.
    Thanku so much

    • @DrPelto
      @DrPelto  Год назад

      With flip flops your toes have to cramp down to hold on the sandals. I would recommend wearing a more supportive one that stays on without your toes cramping down.

    I heard barfoot walking or with the socks that cover each toe can be helpful. I feel the shoe industry is destroying our natural foot shape.

      You’re right. Go into a shoe store, 95% are pointy shoes. I can’t wear them, so it takes forever to find shoes. It’s ridiculous the damage done for fashion.

      Ohh yeah try walking with hammer toes for the whole day barefoot. Idiot being barefoot makes it worse. Jesus christ. If you actually had it you would know the hell of numbing pain and deformed joints. The agonizing pain just to fucking walk. Wearing good shoes I have done I once was able to jog and walk with ease. Now just a walk up and down stairs with my good shoes on I'm out for a couple days . I can't move like I used to. Now I must have the fucking surgeries to shorten the joint and correct my fucking toes. I have oa in my feet joints so thank god for good shoes. Fuck the barefoot crap
