+Emma Fulford xoxo Hi Emma - that can be tough having an accessory navicular and spending a lot of time in a skate. I have had some success by first making my patients a very controlling orthotic that accommodates the navicular and takes tension off of the tendon that attaches into it (the posterior tibialis). This often works well and I can usually design the orthotic to fit in the skate. We do have to send the skate to the orthotic manufacturer so the orthotic can be fit perfectly to the skate. You can read more about orthotics for flat feet here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/condition/flat-feet/ Sometimes, however, this does't work because this type of foot can require a fairly wide orthotic and in some cases will not fit well in a standard skate. So what we have done in this situation is to have a custom skate built with the patient wearing the orthotic while being casted for the skate. More info on skate orthotics can be found here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/sport-shoes/ice-skate/ Where are you located? With any luck I might know a podiatrist near you who is an expert in orthotic therapy. This is a tough enough situation that you really should find someone who specializes in orthotics. Surgery is also an option but should only be a last resort. We can usually eliminate the pain with the correct orthotic. Make sure to subscribe to my youtube channel. I am planning on some videos on orthotics for figure skates and hockey skates in the next few months and if you are subscribed you'll be informed when they go live.

Surgery is often very helpful but always has risks. Properly made orthotics will relieve pain in most cases without doing surgery, but the orthotics have to be made correctly and many orthotics are poorly made. See a podiatrist that specializes in orthotic therapy. We advise our patients that surgery should only be a last resort.
How can you tell if yours is larger than normal? If you don't respond that's ok I'll ask my doctor I'm going to the doctor on Tuesday and they'll decide if I need to go to a specialist and the specialist decides if I need surgery. I'm scared about if I need surgery😩
It really is only a problem if it is painful and most pain from this problem can be relieved using proper orthotics. More info on these two pages: www.footankle.com/orthotics/condition/flat-feet/ www.footankle.com/accessory-bones-and-extra-bones-of-the-feet/

The hard part is finding an orthotic expert in your area who is skilled and experienced in making orthotics for this foot type. If possible try to find a podiatrist in your area who specializes in orthotic therapy. While correctly made custom orthotics will work best, there are some over the counter arch supports you can try. My son has accessory navicular in both feet. Shoe inserts and supportive shoes work great most of the time. However, when he is expecting to be on his feet a lot (marching band) are there extra measures we can take to support that area, like taping for instance? For now, we just prepare by taking advil and icing it.
I have orthotics and still needed to have the Kidner procedure on my right foot after the ligament pulled the accessory navicular when I slid on a floor. That was in 2013. Last week I slid on the ice outside and since then my left foot has been aching in an all-too familiar way. I am worried I pulled the other accessory navicular and will have to have another surgery. But beside that i have a 1.6 in longitudinal crack on the short fibular tendon on the other side of the foot and I do not know what came first, now the pain from the tendon is worst than from accessory navicular bone. Trying to do everything i can before surgery but the most important question is: does the surgery would solve the problem? because i saw a lot of people complaining after surgery. Is there any new treatment before surgery? Thanks
What is "a lot of people"? The studies or websites I've looked up say that recovery tends to go well after surgery..but I'm not sure if this is truly representative of the population. I'm interested to know how many people you've talked to. I'm supposed to get surgery but have only had the problem for about 7months after rolling my ankle.
I've been getting pain in my foot and feeling the sore area I noticed this bump there and searching google I found out I too have this issue. I get pain from when I'm sleeping though. I can only sleep on one side and my back sometimes due to other issues but when I sleep on my side my two feet rest ontop of each other and these two bones. I must find some thick socks or something to help, it's very low on my worst of painful daily things but it's still enough to bother my walking afterwards. My shoes don't bother my feet at all.
I had an extra bone in my left foot and two bones infused on top, the doctors tried everything over the past two years and the last resort was the operation, so I've had that and my foot should be recovered by now but it feels likes it's worse than before, is there anything that might help?
You should get a 2nd opinion from another foot specialist. Even get 3rd or 4th opinions. Also make sure you have excellent orthotics to take tension off of the area. Bone will take up to a year to heal and we recommend that our patients use either custom orthotics or very good prefabricated orthotics for that entire time. Essentially we tell them not to go barefoot at all. Definitely get a 2nd opinion but in the meantime you can take a look at our recommended prefabricated orthotics here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/off-the-shelf/
I have them on each of my feet and started hurting around the age of 8, I never really got it checked out... Also, its werid because I have arched feet. My bones started feeling VERY sharp to the touch and hurting also, my tendons are getting rubbed on and causing redness and inflamation. I went to the doctor about 2 years ago (im 13) and the doctor noticed the 1 on my right foot was broken.. I was in a cast for 8 months or so. The bone broke because of over use... now im worried my left foot may be broken because of all of the hopping and stress from having the cast on the other foot for so long. I used to be very active but now I can barely bare standing for long periods of time. Exercise on the other hand is MISERABLE. No matter how long or short. Now even just sitting, I feel terrible throbbing pains. I then thought of giving them removed but my doctor said I have to wait until I stop growing D: I have arch supports in my shoes, I take pain pills regularly, and I even have these little wraps for my feet. Nothing seems to be helping. The pain is really getting to me... Any advice on minimizing pain?
You really need to see a foot doctor who is very experienced with this condition. The level pain you are having is very unusual but with proper treatment is almost always treatable. In what part of the country do you live? I may be able to refer you to someone good near you.

I had surgery on this in 1994. But in the last few months it’s grown back even worse. I think a pair of ankle boots I was wearing aggravated it because it was so red after every time I wore them. I think I just have to live with it! The boots are in the bin!
I have a navicular accessory and I am a dance I had to wear a cast for a whole month!! But whenever I apply pressure and massage it it hurts but feels good? Is that normal?
Mine isn’t as severe but I am a dancer and after I’m done with practice and sit for a while it starts to get swollen... so when I stand up it hurts really badly. I also have this really nasty crunching sound in my ankles when I go to point through my ankle. It’s pretty loud and there is so much crunching that I could compare it to walking on crunchy ice. Do you know what that is? (I have really flat feet as well and my feet have a natural turn out when I stand, so I can’t walk parallel without trying.)
Whenever any field Sports club has newly joined members, their feet should be checked first. If they are having accessory navicular bone, then they should not be allowed to play the sport. It can aggravate their pain. Medical check ups in school, colleges, field sports clubs, gyms, should be done and this issue should be addressed.
+Bryson_ Read7 I hope the surgery worked well for you. After surgery we recommend that our patients wear orthotics for at least 12 months to reduce tension on the surgical site by the posterior tibialis tendon. A custom orthotic is best but a good prefabricated orthotic can help a lot also. Here is one of our favorites: www.ourdoctorstore.com/footankle/prolab-p3-podiatrist-designed-orthotics-sport/
Hi there! I have had an issue with my accessory bone since 2004 when I needed to go to several drs to even confirm my foot was "broken" bc the xray scans in my NJ hometown were so poor. I then had surgery in 2013 because I was told the bone was still broken after 9 yrs. Post surgery I remember telling my nj dr that my pain did not feel better, but possibly worse, but was told to give it time, which I did, haha. In 2016 I got a scan from a different dr, here in CA, who covered his mouth when looking at my xray. He said he saw what the dr had done, which seemed to demonstrate to me that he felt the job was inadequate. (The original dr just shaved down the bone?) I moved farther north and recently got an MRI (my first on my foot, if I'm not mistaken) in addition to xrays. I was told the bone is inflamed and surgery would probably alleviate my pain. I'm going to get a second opinion from the dr I saw in Orange County, but are there drs that specialize in this particular occurrence that you can recommend, here in LA? My insurance is kaiser but I want the best surgeon possible at this point. I didn't enjoy my first surgery, but it's not something I want to have to keep dealing with or repeating. I'm in the LA area! Btw I also had fractured my right foot a few years back (around 2011?) and that seems to have been taken care of asap by a walking boot, by a great dr in washington, dc. Not the same problem though! And idk if I want to go to dc just for surgery! Thx for reading this foot saga!

Definitely get a 2nd opinion but in the meantime you can take a look at our recommended prefabricated orthotics here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/off-the-shelf/
Thank you very much, I will ask my doctor further about insoles.
Are you ok?
Im in California actually... Near Sacramento.. Thank you :)
In Sac, I recommend seeing Dr. Kevin Kirby or Dr. Dianne Mitchell. You should be able to find them via Google.
Awesome! thank you so much :D Foot & Ankle Center of Washington
What if you have average arch and walking still hurts
See a foot doctor for a examination and treatment plan

@@8luest 3 weeks i sprained my ankle. My ankle is fine now because it was a grade 1 sprain but my extra navicular bone is hurting so bad that i can barely run. I'm a long distance runner. Really missing my running :(
@@mynameis634 it would be better if you go to doctor i think. experienced smilar thing. you might need foot trauma medicine and probably should not walk for at least a week :(
I had surgery on this in 1994. But in the last few months it’s grown back even worse. I think a pair of ankle boots I was wearing aggravated it because it was so red after every time I wore them. I think I just have to live with it! The boots are in the bin!
Please see a foot and ankle specialist to have an evaluation, get a definitive diagnosis and an appropriate treatment plan.
I’m 13 and this condition is on both my feet and I can’t run because I get a lot of pain and I get a lot

I have a navicular accessory and I am a dance I had to wear a cast for a whole month!! But whenever I apply pressure and massage it it hurts but feels good? Is that normal?
If it is still painful you should get a 2nd opinion. Unfortunately without an exam I can't tell you if it is normal.
Omg same here ! Whenever I rub it .. it hurts so good lol it only inflames if I'm on my feet all day or go to the gym
No way to tell without an examination. Please see a sports medicine podiatrist near you.
I had an accessory navicular bone, but mine was larger than normal and to have surgery on it
+Bryson_ Read7 I hope the surgery worked well for you. After surgery we recommend that our patients wear orthotics for at least 12 months to reduce tension on the surgical site by the posterior tibialis tendon. A custom orthotic is best but a good prefabricated orthotic can help a lot also. Here is one of our favorites: www.ourdoctorstore.com/footankle/prolab-p3-podiatrist-designed-orthotics-sport/
The surgery went great, but the only downfall was that a month later I ruptured my achilles...

Would this cause swelling and pain on the top of the affected foot? Swelling starts by ankle and covers entire top of foot from the ankle to the toes.
Not likely, but here is info on top of foot pain

Yes you have this sindrome maybe when you are little your foot wass plane ask your parents
Middle-aged guy, here. confirming that this is a crappy condition. I've had a lifetime of inflamed PT tendons. I've had no success with arch supports; even with expensive custom orthotics. Foot surgeon said she would not operate for technical reasons. Such is life, I guess. 😂
I have a bone sticking out where my arch needs to be.I really don't have a problem.Besides, you know not being able to wear normal shoes and when I go run my lower back starts to hurt.Besides that I guess it is what it is. Gotta be thankful to God we have feet.Gof bless brother.
Sure arch supports are good. But you can't wear them 24/7. Walking around barefoot at home just brings the pain right back.
I usually recommend using sandals or slippers with arch support in the house. Here is detailed information on accessory navicular, including home treatment options which include the arch support sandals and slippers:

I am having this
Am having severe pain while prolonged standing
Extra bone not a problem bcoz I am already born with more than extra bone ..
F**k my life, I have it my whole life and it hurts like hell to the point I can't walk!
Christopher Xu Get surgery.
That was suggested, but my parents declined due to the high risk of... complications
Christopher Xu How old are you? Bc usually but not always... when you finish growing the pain tends to decrease but it sounds like your case is worse then the average person.
19. And I repeat myself, it hurts like hell after walking too long
Christopher Xu Yeah I’m 15 and I understand your pain bc I have it to. Good luck
I have this and I am a gymnast and I have to rape it every practice and competition and sometimes it hurts really bad
report that to the police...
Sounds like you're the victim, the perpetrator and the star witness all in one!
The only problem with inserts is you ant wear sandals.🙄
In fact, there are sandals that will accept orthotics. You can see some our suggestions here: www.footankle.com/orthotics/sandals/
