  • The base-model Volkswagen Golf now comes with a 1.8L Turbocharged engine, which means potential for tuning! This car has been tuned by Revotechnik for 245 HP, more than the factory GTI, thanks to an intake, intercooler, exhaust, and a tune. It also features Revo's lowering springs and 19" cast wheels

    The appeal of this (for someone like me) is that I can buy a base Golf for 19k out the door, whereas the cheapest GTI comes to 25k out the door.
    A $650 APR tune takes you beyond GTI power levels.
    Add some 2nd hand wheels from Craigslist, maybe upgrade the brakes, and you have a budget GTI and you are still $3.5k below a GTI.
    You can do these upgrades over time as you have money...and yeah I am a student lol

      i would have taken the golf but it looks so damn basic. the springs and rims help but still doesnt have the flaring and all the lighting packages, not to mention tech packages. i dont like the keyless shiz but i am a fan of a back up camera in a new car, so i went with jetta sport. i like the new styling, like a cheap a4.

    Put GTI crank and rods in the 1.8 and boom you have a GTI engine at 2.0L of displacement. Oh and also the rated 170hp and 200 ft/lbs of torque is way underrated. People are taking BONE STOCK 1.8 MK7's and dynoing 185hp and 230ft/lbs AT THE WHEELS. The upgrades make this car 245hp at the wheels not at the crank. You also have to remember that the TSI runs an IS12 turbo and the GTI runs an IS20 turbo which is bigger than the IS12. The Golf R runs an IS38 turbo which is bigger than both. You can put an IS38 on a 1.8, it is a direct bolt on. You just need a tune. Full bolt on 1.8's with a tune and IS38 turbo swap make 350+ whp.

    • @Jbaaaaak

    • @madincraft5809
      @madincraft5809 6 лет назад +3

      lorence b yes sir. I have an IS20 in my Sportwagen 4motion (1.8t). Apr intake and stock downpipe, and I am still making 300hp and 320 lbs/ft. So basically a budget golf R wagon. If I go IS38 and full bolt ons + a JB4 eventually, 380hp is not out of the question.

      hey dude i was just reading about putting a gti crank shaft into a 1.8 to make the 2.0l. have you see anyone actually do this? what's a crank shaft replacement like? im a new modder but the bolt on upgrades all look very easy. if i can upgrade the dp, ic, tubing, and do a turbo swap is a crank shaft replacement that difficult?

      170hp on 87 octane. APR dyno’d a 1.8t with 93 octane, completely stock software, and it made 191hp. 21hp just by adding premium, and 19 more tq as well, up to 203lb/ft.

    • @mlr492
      @mlr492 5 лет назад +7

      APR Stage 1 93 Octane makes 245 hp and 301 tq off the shelf without even touching intake, exhaust, and intercooler. Do intake, intercooler, and exhaust and you would be in the 280hp 330 tq range.

    • @kropotkln

      For the most part turbo engines in the 2010s are designed so robustly that you'd be flabbergasted at how far you can push boost+fuelling past factory settings before having to worry about the immediate integrity of the system. And now that all that is controlled electronically we see legitimately crazy gains on consumer tunes for plenty of stock turbo cars.

    They have such a great tune that when I went to my dealer to get a stage 1 on my 16 Golf 1.8 TSi (closest dealer was 2.5 hours away) I was told that Revo didn't have a tune for my 1.8 TSi. And this is after I had sent the dealer my built date, and vin number. Dealer told me they had forwarded that information to Revo USA and everything was good until they attempted to tune my car. Revo has not once apologized for their mistake (Lost a whole day and countless hours of driving for nothing)

    In Europe we don't get the 1.8T at all in the MK7. For us it is 1.2 TSI, 1.4 TSI or 2.0 TSI. So you either get the GTI or you are stuck with a 1.4 or a 1.2 .

    What part of the tune makes this car so tail happy? I took my golf to a car control clinic and on a wet skid pad I could only get it to oversteer under heavy braking. Beyond that it was happily running down whomever was in front of me, or understeering. I don't think it's power, it's got to be the suspension setup.

  • @BahmannBlades

    Here in Canada you can get into a 1.8 3 door Golf for a base price of $18,995. To get the GTI with the limited slip you need to spend $37,195. Quite a price gap. Pretty crazy, considering the Golf R starts at $39,995.

      Even as an American, albeit a young one, it's wiser to buy the TSI over the GTI fo ther lower insurance rates and less of a temptation to do anything super stupid. Also as someone who values comfort heavily for the commute, for the money I'd rather have a fully-loaded TSI SEL than a base GTI.

    Here's the reason to buy the 1.8t over the GTI: You buy the Sportwagen S with 4motion and DSG for about 19-20k and add the tune, better suspension and lighter, larger wheels. Down the road you can add the IS38 turbo and you're outperforming a stock Golf R and it's cooler because it's a wagon :) That's what I'm doing anyways. Got the car in January, first up suspension upgrade this summer.

    If you like to build your car, get the TSI. Difference between the base TSI and GTI is $10,000. You can bolt proper suspension, tune to GTI power, light weight wheels, better brakes than GTI and still have a couple thousand left in your account. The TSI is an excellent value if you can wrench.

    • @timjoo5690
      @timjoo5690 6 лет назад +1

      I'm also thinking of the TSI because the only stock parts I'll be keeping is the engine and the catback. I'll be upgrading intake, ECU, suspension, sway bars, etc. so it makes some sense for me to go for a cheaper base model. At the same time, Volkswagen cut more corners on the Golf than they did previously. The mk6 Golf still had the bolstered seats (minus the plaid) but the seats on the mk7 Golf are no better than that on a base Jetta. Sides have a bit more bolster but not as good as the GTI or the base Golf from the mk5/6 years. Better seats would have sealed the deal on the TSI. Maybe I'll miss having 6 gears but I'd rather have a modded TSI than a stock GTI...probably.

    For me if I was to buy a new GTI, due to finances it would likely remain stock for the first year or 2. On the other hand if I bought a 1.8t or better yet the new 1.4l (not a big performance difference from the 1.8) I would have money to play around with, make it my own (big thing for me) and increase the power more than the GTI. Now if your wanting to build a 400+hp monster then no, the 1.8 or 1.4 doesn't really make sense. Great video guys👍👍

    Recently I have been eyeing the Golf Sportwagen but I find it odd they stuck the 1.8t in it. Since I cant get a new TDI for who knows how long I was worried the 1.8 would be kind of a dog stock. I guess if you didnt want to drop coin on a tdi wagon adding a few bolt ons would at least liven up the car. I cant imagine how bad the 1.8 must be when fully loading the car. I found it a bit odd there was no detuned 2.0t for the wagons to help with grunt. Most likely too much money to certify another engine rather than sticking with what you got. Also no 6spd is kind of a bummer too. It is like they are trying to kill the manual in anything but the performance cars. I imagine 5spd golf take rate is rather low in the US.

    The reason to take a base Golf over a Gti is price. Even though there is only about a $4000 difference in price because you will get more in the base. A nice base model will have leather, a bigger infotainment screen, and a sunroof for the price.

    £130 tax on a GTI in uk(same as a 185bhp Audi A1 1.4T)
    £180 on a R in the uk
    Hardly high tax, if you can afford a GTI you can afford tax.
    What Revo have done with the 1.8t is great, can see R&D on the engine becoming useful when the new Polo GTI 1.8t/seat Ibiza cupra 1.8t start getting mapped.
    The Audi A3 1.8t 180bhp will also see advantages from it.

    In Russia taxes are based on horsepower figures, so even something really old and cheap, but with a high power output, can cost you a lot of money to run because of tax rates alone... Ridiculous

    • @Stigs722
      @Stigs722 8 лет назад

      So the tax authorities dyno your car and tax you accordingly? Are you taxed on crank hp or wheel hp? Haha. That's exactly the point of this car! Markets such as you're own!

    • @SwapBlogRU
      @SwapBlogRU 8 лет назад

      Stigs722
      It's based on the manufacturer's claimed power-figure - it's written down in your PTS (that's what we call a pink-slip here) when you're car goes through customs, or when a Passport is issued to a car produced in Russia (most VW's, BMW's, Toyota's, Peugeot's, Nissan's, Renault's etc. for the Russian market are actually assembled here, I was never really bothered to look into which companies exactly have assembly lines here, since there are so many - I do know that GM pulled out because of all this sanctions bullshit).

    • @SwapBlogRU
      @SwapBlogRU 8 лет назад +1

      Anyway, that's why tuning is an option - you only pay for the horsepower which the car used to make from the factory.

      +Whoracle8531 To get 400hp out of any modern GTI (MkV onwards) you need to do a serious amount of work, including replacing turbos. You can't get more than 300 or so without different turbos, and you certainly can't with just ECU tuning. Maybe on the Golf R, but not the GTI.
