Well the cheapest Volvo C30 in the country might have only been $3,000 but it cost me well over $1,500 on parts. Not only were the parts expensive but days of labor went into getting everything right. The work paid off though, the turbocharged 5 cylinder engine was tamed with a set of new engine mounts, the turn signal doesn't randomly turn on after each bump, and the clunky suspension is once again buttery smooth. I love this quirky little car, but it's time for it to find a new home. I'm going to list it on AutoTempest then post the link here and in the comments tomorrow.

First 😄
I like your description of the car on autotempest.
Do want!!
Wasn’t one of the brake lights broken?
Great work. I am sure you will sell it quickly.
Okay, but what about the bent rims, the cover for the front head light washer, and last but not least the rear taillight lens ?? We do watch when you did your evaluation after purchase.
Love this car.
LOL !! He didn't answer, so we can assume he spent enough money and time fixing the more important parts
I just spent 25 minutes watching a video about how to change parts I’ll never work on, for a car I’ll never own 😂 Enjoyed this series though and watching it come back to life! Hope you do more like this with AutoTempest! I’ve started using them more lately.
“You know what they say..”
*Dramatic pause*
“...turn down for what”
Just a couple things - you should use impact rated extensions or at least an extension with a lot tighter fit. Your extension is robbing a lot of power from your impact. Its acting like a really shitty torque stick pretty much.
Second - the car's systems all 'failed' when you pulled out that head unit not because the head unit controls the whole car but because that was a MOST link. Its a ring network so any break in the network prevents ALL the modules in the network from communicating. You can get bypass loop adapters which would let you bypass individual modules without causing a ring wide failure.
Using chrome bits with an impact gun is just asking for trouble. They will eventually crack or shred as shown in the video.
Tip, if you do a shifter blind again, pop the tray out behind the waterfall, remove the two T25's from behind the panel above that tray, remove the two t25 screws in the back of the center console in the bottom of the pocket under the arm rest, the entire center console will slide back enough you can access the two screws at the base of the waterfall, also tug the plastic around the parking brake handle off. I do tons of these....I have never pulled the armrest and the grey trim out.
could you make a video, i just pulled out the armrest and grey trim but if there's a better method I would love to know. How does the center console slide? Mine is not budging
I love my volvo! 'O4 V70, 230,000 miles, had it 1 month, runs perfectly! One owner car. I've had 7 Volvos, all great!
I had a '90 240 Wagon (5sp, RWD), bought in 2000 with 120k and drove another decade to about 275k, ran like a watch - other than oil changes never touched the motor. Think tires and brakes every year (weight? vehicles not mine), traded it in (2012 Honda Accord Coupe) when blower fan (under dash) went out and the price was $700. Could kick myself for letting go for $800.
Think Volvos have declined (safety and reliability) since the mid-late 90s
My 2006 V70 is awesome. After the P2 they became too modern...
Good Job JR.
And you are fair on the price.
The new owner can track the repairs and know it is not some janky flip but actual repairs that were done.
And you had it in your hands! The coolant tank on these is known to break and leak at the seams. They have a low window washer sensor/warning but no low coolant sensor for the coolant tank. I'm rebuilding an 11 with a manual and I will be swapping in a new tank. Nice work all around. I'll be checking those motor mounts now. Thanks for the walkthrough.
"The last screw you'll ever need." Yea , I
was married once.
Wow, that shifter blind repair was a lot more work than I would have thought.
I'm a long term C30 owner - just 2 comments - you should have replaced the coolant tank. I could see it was yellowed, once they get that way, they're prone to cracking. You lose coolant, overheat - and then BAM - blown head gasket. The tank is a cheap part, just replace it. Second thing, you didn't need to change the whole mirror assembly, you can just pop new mirror elements in. Very easy, could have saved you a bunch of time. Otherwise, great job! The next owner is going to love you guys for the work you did!
Great series of videos. I'm looking at buying one of these in supposedly good condition and your videos have shown me all the weak points on thrashed examples, so I know what faults to look for. Thanks very much and I have subscribed to your channel.
The "I did it" along with the look of despair made me laugh so hard I snorted and choked. We've all been there brother!
Based on an earlier vid I decided to change out the rear sway bar bushings on my S40... Except I did it in a car park, with no ramps and only two socket wrenches... 12yr / 125k mile Scottish weather beaten under car parts are such a pleasure to work on.
Sweet times, my neck is still hating me two days later.
DSTC off would have been easy, the PCM limits Torque in 1st and 2nd at the mapping level just for that torque steer issue. I still heart this car.
John, if you'll just put one of those little supermagnets on the shaft of your screwdriver, you won't lose any of those screws if they are metallic. Saved me losing a lot of little screws into places I couldn't get or find.
My wife’s 13 explorer has the same blinker stock. When I googled how to do it. It was shocking how easy it was. But that does not stop Ford from charging 1hr to replace. It took me 6 mins.
Pretty cool ... My C30 with the automatic ran low15's at 93 mph at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City. Almost got into the 14's. that's at 4300 ft altitude. Thanks for posting !!!
I like your opening on AT about the description “This hot hatch might have been built to transport vampires around the Alaskan countryside, but don't worry it can take normal people to work or school in style.”
Those felt washers for the battery work awesome. I live in Canada where we get a lot of corrosion due to salt on the roads in winter and I’ve never had any battery terminal corrosion ever since I started using them 8 years ago.
Do you magnetize your screwdrivers? It helps if the screws are steel.
Nah, I prefer unmagnetized honestly, with the right bit they usually don't fall 🍻
A touch of grease on the end will hold it in
Or masking tape, wax, or gum!
The mirror caps just pop off?!! That fixes my whole life! The caps on my s40 are totally melted & scratched. They look horrible. So glad it's an easy fix!
Its interesting that the turn signal stalk is independent from the wiper stalk. I guess Volvo do things a little differently.
Yes they do it better.
You must have connections at Autotempest. The car is the first ad !
Toyota does it separate also
Most foreign cars are this way.
Also GM products, at least in things that are not trucks and built after 2007.
It’s that way on my 99 s80 as well.
This car had two options for batteries. I believe the diesel versions outside the US came with a larger battery and shorter post. I went with the larger battery and bought the shorter post so it would fit. Larger battery generally has lasted longer.
Well done video, JRCAMO. I actually like that car which is weird since most of the junk here is without merit. He could teach Redline Reviews how to do actual 0-60 times instead of his usual "about x seconds" as he drives with his head inside his body. I gained some respect for you upgrading and fixing this car mostly on your own effort. A true video delight.
Pre check list before removing and replacing small panels, antiseptic ointment check, Band-Aids check...
The passenger side mirror glass falling out happens to all of these. I remember driving down the highway checking the mirror and seeing it was just gone._. I believe it's a symptom of ice separating the adhesive. Point is it's possible to replace just the glass for about $15 with brand new glass.
Would love to see more Vids on the C30 . Upgrades / detailing / customisations.... a guy can dream!
Actually have a 2011 c30 and the shift blind is broken so like usual look it up on RUclips and found this one and thanks for the help
You know you're single when your parts washer is your kitchen sink. Mine is too.
I've got that 3/8 stubby M12 Fuel, put the bigger XC 4.0 battery on, it makes a big difference
Yeah, I grabbed a bunch of big batteries but I wanted to keep the impact small 💯
@@WatchJRGo There's also an excellent sale at HD now on M12 battery bundles, buy one get one free
You'll never know how you lived without the portable tire Inflator or the Rocket light
Seems like nearly every modern car has some kind of plastic or rubber "achilles heel". Near 100K mi, some plastic part will go bad and fixing it would be more than the car is worth. JRGo has the gift though, all those creaking snapping plastic parts would just be bits of broken junk in my hands. Thanks for the fun! Kudos for your skill.
Becoming one of my fav follows, like the cheap builds.
You have so much faith in those new parts working, when you put it back tougher and don't even test before hand!
You do love that 3-flash! Love the Fresh Prince pun. Well played sir.
Hey JR the Milwaukee M12 stubby impact should not be used with a low amperage battery thats most likely why you had an issue breaking the bolts on the mounts loose, nothing less than an M12 3.0 battery same goes with all impacts.
Ben from Long Island Ny
So many grateful cars owe their thanks to you, JR.
Many comments in one.............
-That front mount is a lot easier to do if you take the timing cover off. as it looks like maybe you found out when you couldn't get it back in easy.
-As for the battery, if you don't have the best sound system optioned the battery is right, there are actually 2 different sized batteries for them, there should be a box and cover that would help it not look under sized but yours seems to be missing.
-BTW i made a video of the mounts too.. specific note about not forgetting that little 8mm on the trans mount ;-) and you forgot the most important "mount" the dog-bone mount under and behind the trans, that will make a huge difference it's the #1 thing to swap out when getting one of these the factory ones are notoriously bad, way too soft, and fail if you look at them wrong
really is too bad you got the auto... if you ever get the chance to drive a manual C30.. take it . they are fin little cars.
Great episode.
Knocking on the door of 250k subs! I've been around since you were under 100k!
That little 12v is a beast. I know my M18 1/4 fuel impact is a beast for sure! I have been wanting to by a tool with the M12 to get the batteries for a few things. As well as some of the pack out
Great job on all the details. I'm not even in the car market, but that's a sweet little car.
do you ever notice he never help any other you tubers which would help him exponentially but only helps him self with his other friends ???????
Last time I heard the word Grody was on a Frank Zappa song VALLEY GIRL. Cricky brilliant videos.
I like those cars. I like the P 1800 rear end. Wish the were AWD!
Great to see JR working with BOTH hands. Camera man needs a little help but still a real improvement. :-)
JR, the master at working one-handed! 😂👍👍
Loved the DJ Snake Lil Jon - Turn Down for What reference and I've not heard someone use the term grody in decades. lol Did you fix the headlight washers?
Thank god for your attention to detail and not be OCD !!!
That engine bay light is awesome. wow
Interesting. The magical rainbow rabbit is gone at 24:51, then magical reappears at 25:02. Me thinks something is up with that rabbit.
That work light was money will spent from the viewers perspective.
I look at the times you upload sometimes and wonder when do you sleep? I really like watching the videos everyday, but I worry you might burn out. I hope you're still having fun.
that coolant reservoir is the same one from the Focus/Mazda 3. Also that upper engine mount looks similar too. LMAO Ford/Mazda/Volvo really do share parts 😂
Suspension parts are Mazda 3, yeap.
Love the content JR, always a great time watching your videos!
I’m about to do the shifter blind on my ‘09 C70! Your video will be very helpful in the process; any tips you didn’t say in the video?
YES! I have the very large Milwaukee impact gun so I can undo the motor mounts without using my breaker bar. As if I didn’t already know this information 😄
Yep, my shifter blind broke on my S40 too.. Thankfully that car is long gone
And not one swear word when that extension fell out for the fifth time- at least not on camera!..lol
I guess it’s time to get another extension
Did you replace the cracked taillights? I don't remember you doing so 🤔
Change the coolant expansion tank. They are a known failure point on the p1 cars. There’s no coolant level sensor so it will leak and by the time you figure out what’s happened it’s probably too late. I understand you are selling it but it’s a $25 part on eBay and a five minute job.
nothing like watching JR lovingly polish a knob.
You should do an external detail and also add the missing headlight washer cover
You know what they say, *long pause* turn down for what. 😂
Hooker Headers!!!!! (Just recently sold a house here in Southern California that was originally owned by a bigwig from Hooker Headers back in the 70s. The mailbox out front was built onto a stand of Hooker headers instead of a regular pole.)
And meanwhile the stock 46 year old motor mounts in my Datsun are still good.
Probably because it doesn't make enough power to hurt itself.
Johnny Nimble lmao
That’s the difference between simple Japanese engineering that is tried and true vs. European over-engineering that makes it a pain for mechanics.
Remember the old saying, Mirror Mirror on the wall (car) who's the swiftest of them all, JR is, JR is !
And I thought it was a pain to remove the plastic on my 11 corolla to get all that off on mine to replace the burnt out bulbs... and it was a 10 minute job 😂
I’m always impressed with how you’re able to accomplish so much with such little knowledge. Keep up the “good” work.
Throwing money at these cars, you gonna get a Hoovie reputation.
This is an excellent series. Hope it inspires people to diy
Did you ever change the license plate bulb housing on the Volvo c30?
Good job as always brother!
Quarter million subscriber top gear/grand tour style special??? You're so close!
You removed the waterfall the wrong way. You missed the two screws in the front of the center console that allows you to slide it back to access the two lower skrews on the waterfall.
Man you're making me want one of these! My bank account would hate me tho. 🤣
In fairness mine had none of these problems... I had completely different ways to spend money on it.
Glad the airbags didn't blow when you took the radio out lol
My side mirror is wiggling slightly on its swivel point. Is there a way to tighten that?
I like it when Jake is in the episode.
Really excited to see the twilight of this build
Love watching your videos JR!
It’s not the wrong size battery, it’s just the smaller cheaper size. These cars freak out when the voltage drops or is interrupted but the smaller battery should be fine
Volvo kiss of death: remove the radio without disconnecting the battery and get an SRS light that needs VIDA/DICE for a reset. That'll only cost $150 to $200 at the stealership.
Safety first. Camera man stays buckled in!
On the Volvo the turn signal is a common problem
You didn’t need a new one you just needed to take it apart and clean the contacts with a rubber eraser.
LOL !!! My 2011 S80 lost its passinger side mirror glass on the highway a few weeks ago.
If I could help Watch JR Goes work on the Volvo C30 I would drink the cold Bartle Skeets and roll up the fat Woolford and get all schmoked up.
If you ever run across trying to clean interior parts again a magic eraser works like a champ
I saw a C30 yesterday at the grocery store. It was missing a bumper cover, and didnt look nearly as good
I like how you just threw the box out the window 12:02
Looking good. Another one gets back on the road.
Hey bud I have a question and would be absolutely crazy happy if you could answer it!?! What are 3 of the best old school thin CD players? I just bought a 1996 yoda and I am going to put a mini system but need your knowledge on the Deck I should look for! I remember that video where you called out the thin CD player that was a really good one when it came out! If you can please recommend me one!!!! Love the channel Dieing to see the Audi!!!! Can’t wait Thanks man!
next level one liners achieved
Looks like a great daily driver, what's the MPG?
If you push it 16 mpg. But if you granny it you can squeeze 20 city 30 highway...it’s not the best lol
Like Jerry said, maybe 20... if you're nice to it, it's not bad ⛽️
@@WatchJRGo Then you got problems? The one I had easily did 30mpg and my current V70 does 34mpg average on a 2.4L with 200k on the clock!!! If you drive sensible and regularly service, Volvos are quite economical..however they can be naughty...my 330bhp V70R would do 12 at a push!!
My Volvo v70 gets 50/60 mpg so you got issues there my friend... or just how it is for your engine. Mine is a 1.6 diesel so of course it’s frugal :)
@@trainmanbob maybe its got a foot problem when JR is driving it?
I'd love to see mfrs. make more stuff modular like the turn signal stalk.
every time you drop something.........I seem to hear you saying "real quick"......lol. Nice video JR
I appreciate the garage subwoofer.
lmao why is the dude in the passengers seat wearing his seat belt when the car is parked inside your garage not even running let alone moving?
Car would probably annoyingly beep the whole time if passenger has undone.
Enjoying the off-camera chuckling :)
When is it going up on Autotempest? It might have to move back to Texas!
Working on the ad now! 🍻
