    with torque, your "NOT" wrong, but back in the day on many many cars and plug changes, do it up by hand and then 1/4 turn, never fails

      Back in the day? I've been doing this since back in the day till today on cars all the way up to 2019 I've never had a problem LOL people are trying to make rocket science out of changing plugs to keep simpletons in the car garage waiting on the mechanic

    Nice video, I liked how you showed how to tighten it at the end with a 2/3 turn so basically you turn it with your regular wrench about half way and then the last bit you use your torque wrench to indicate the last part of the turn. A good visualization of a half a turn would be safe from 12:00 to 6:00 or say 3:00 to 9:00 and then the last bit would be a little less than a quarter or so.

    The hole on the coin style gapping tool is used to pry up the end, similar to prying off a bottle cap and then use it as a key ring accessory lol

      Exactly! One slip of those pliers while gapping it and the plug is ruined. Granted, hes using plugs that cost 2 bucks a piece, so they're cheap, but what about a 20 dollar plug? Not a good "tip/trick" to be putting out there for others to replicate.

    Clean the outside with the plug in place so nothing can fall in the hole. Compressed air to blow out the chamber before removing the plug as well. Dielectric grease on the inside chamber of the ignition coils. Use anti-seize as recommended by spark plug manufacturer. Should replace coils along with plugs unless you know they are very new (which those aint)

    ive always put in tapered plugs by tightening by hand and then a maximum quarter turn on the ratchet, always worked with no problems installing or removing, i use a tiny amount of wd40 on the threads, car runs fine. hope this helps. the batman.

    How do you figure the 2/3 turn came out the same as using the torque wrench? After you tightened to 2/3, all you did was use the torque wrench to signal 13lb-ft. You could have way over tightened the spark plug because the torque wrench simply clicked at 13lb-ft. This merely indicated the minimum amount you tightened the spark plug, not that both were equal. A better test would be to use an old spark plug as an indicator by making a mark on it, then use the torque wrench and tighten to spec. This way you'll know exactly how much the spark plug turned by looking down the shaft at your mark.

      +Nicknamed Sin well the manual said 2/3rds turn and I matched it with my torque wrench. Turn it two thirds without a torque wrench then put the torque wrench on and confirmed it was already turned to equal the force of 13ftlb. I am sure your method works just as well I just compared the two methods in the manual that came with this car. Was a family members car

      What you are saying is that you confirmed the 2/3 method was tightened to AT LEAST 13lb-ft, not equal to it. For example, lets assume the 2/3 method ended up being 16lb-ft. When you put the torque wrench on, you'd get the click at 13lb-ft. All you'd know is that the 2/3 method was tightened to a minimum of 13lb-ft, but there would not be a way for you to know anything beyond that.

      +Nicknamed Sin oh I see what you mean. I think when it comes down to it ... it's close enough. The 2/3rds turn is what the manual said so even if it's 16ftlbs it's not going to hurt anything. Maybe if it was 30 or 40 then we'd have some problems. It's been a while since this video and the owner of this car hasn't complain about any noise or anything. She did say she had way more power so I think the job was done correctly my friend. If you want to call Honda and tell them their 99 Civic manual is incorrect go right ahead. 😁

      AutOdometer I changed the spark plugs on my lady's car today and I totally used the 2/3 method. Actually, it was somewhere between 1/2 and 2/3, but I'll just round up and go with that. Torque wrench, smork wrench.

    Always been gasket type 2/3 turn, taper type1/8 turn.

      can you list some examples for taper type? so how many ft/lb are those? gasket type and taper type. (when putting in the new spark plug is this a good way to do to not strip it. turn it counter clockwise then when you feel it sits then clockwise.

    Mine is 14 ft lb for my spark plugs. The only problem is I don't know what torque wrench to get. I went to the parts shop and they said neither 1/2", 3/8" or 1/4" will do 14 ft lb.....what do I do? Are they right? So badly need to get this spark plugs on .

      LOL I've been changing spark plug since I was three I've never used a fucking torque wrench what the fuck for all you need to do is plug it down make sure it's not loose good to go no need to crank it down maybe a quarter of a turn if anything. It's not fucking rocket science LOL

    Brilliant stuff bro, I've got a bike that takes ngk and the tourqe specs are 12nm , would I start at 1.00 o'clock and go to about 6 o'clock or still do half a turn after I've done hand tight

    Ngk says 18-21 ft. lbs for a gasket type 14mm spark plug with aluminum heads and no anti seize because the gasket won't smush down properly and form a seal,Thats what there tech rep told me. I went with honda spec in my manual though 13 ft lbs

      Ngk plugs have a shell making anti-seize unnecessary and risk over-torquing if it’s used.

    there's a tolerance on plugs, 37th is fine, in use the gap will actually get bigger. DONT use pliers use a proper tool. Most plugs are gapped at 40th and most come pre-gapped to that. The problem is if you DROP the plug on the point or in putting it into the cylinder head and then bang it. but all things told, a good video and good advice, I'm not gonna hate on ya ! keep it trucking

      If you're asking... can you do a 2/3 turns "yes for this Honda Civic that is"...I did a 2/3 turn and compared with the foot-lbs and it came out the same because the manual said it would. For your vehicle look at the manual first and see if it suggests anything. It may not say anything about the length of rotational turn. It's best to use a torque wrench and follow the torque specs. Whether you use an NGK, AC Delco, or any other spark plug it shouldnt matter the difference but the torque specs should stay the same for the vehicle.

      +T lh Yes of course. As long as you didn't strip the spark plug threads you should be fine backing it out slowly and tightening again with torque wrench. Just make sure you have the torque specs and then purchase the proper wrench since some are for small jobs and some are for big ones like tightening down axle nuts.

      you're right, I had a giant one and it seemed like too much torque so I got a smaller wrench and since my specs are for 13lbs I went over it again and I had it somewhat close but a little over. You definately don't want to use the biggest torque wrench as mine did not ever click. So I watched the video and memorized the turn using the same size wrench as yours without having to go buy a smaller torque wrench. Everything seems pretty good, Im happy about that. Thanks!

      @ Jim G Unfortunately I am having a tough time finding a "one size fits all" torque wrench. They start at 1/4" drives then go to 3/8" then to 1/2". The larger the inch drive the more force that it can produce. No joke I bought mine on amazon (or received it for a Christmas present). I have a link in the description of the exact one I have (the 3/8") and yes it comes factory calibrated and it comes in a nice red case. I do not see a wrench that ranges from 10ft/lbs (spark plugs) all the way to 200ft/lbs (axle nuts). I do not know if they even make them in those wide of ranges. I see some ranging between 50 to 250ft/lbs. But that is about as wide a range I see.

      @ T lh Nice man. Yeah fortunately I had the right size for this job. I will probably have to get a larger one if I wanted to remove my axle nut. I used the 3/8" drive one.. link in the description

    Did you know on average 2 out of every 10 brand new spark plugs in a box can be defective?
    Ask any mechanic and they will tell you they deal with that problem consistently!

    Why the fuck would you need a torque wrench. I've changed a million spark plugs my life never had a problem. Snuggled down tighten it a quarter turn tight as long as it's not leaking
