Yep - just like the 60's and early 70's 911's, and almost everything made by GM back then. {except the Corvette - their frame rusted}. Funny thing is, I still have the 72 240Z I bought new at the end of 1971. No rust so far.. but hey - it only a matter of time.
WOW what a garage.....240Z, Ferrari Daytona, Ferrari 355, Ferrari Dino 246......my dream garage!!!! Its incredible to see someone with such cars appreciate the 240Z.
I love the fact the guy actually have ferraris but he prefers is datsun, that is against 90% of people out there, and just a testament to the undereconized Japanese engineering, just hope I can buy a few before the market understand the value of this cars...
Something personal bout A 240-280z but!when day made d x -with rear seat( so ur mother n law could come along they! !! fornicated it up ..they should b horse whooped
That Japanese engineering has a whole lot of German in it. The original L series engine is a Mercedes unit licensed to Prince Motor Company which became a part of Nissan. As some point, Nissan changed the block a bit most likely to avoid paying royalties, but the head valve train remained basically the same. Then there's the design, Yoshihiko Matsuo and his team are the designers of the Z, but they did not start from scratch. The 240 was influenced by a Nissan prototype created by a team lead by Albrecht Graf von Goertz. That car was never produced. Many years later, Von Goertz had his lawyer request a clarification from Nissan regarding the design of the 240. This was the reply. At your request, we have examined the relevant evidence pertaining to the development of the highly successful Datsun 240Z which was first introduced in 1969. You were retained by Nissan during the period from 1963 to 1965 as an automotive design consultant. During that period, you consulted with Nissan on the basic methods of styling a general sports car. You were also the sole design consultant on a two-liter sports car which Nissan was trying to develop as part of a joint venture with Yamaha. This car was not produced. While it is our view that the design of the 240Z was the product of Nissan’s design staff, Nissan agrees that the personnel who designed that automobile were influenced by your fine work for Nissan and had the benefit of your designs. Sincerely yours, NISSAN MOTOR CO., LTD. Signed Toshikuni Nyui General Manager Legal Dept.
When I was a kid these cars along with the 270zx were everywhere. I remember saying to my mom how I'm tired of seeing these cars everywhere. Nowadays you never see these cars on the road. I would love one of these.
A series 1 240z is my dream! I love these datsun videos they're by far my favorite. My dad had a 620 when I was probably 5 or younger but it's something I'll never forget and I think that's why I love datsuns so much.
Two awesome cars. Great story, I hope when my boys get older they will enjoy going out with me on a Sunday afternoon, blasting around and looking at each others cars.
Great video ! I really do enjoy your channel. You have the greatest cars and the most respectful people... A real driver doesn't win competitions, a real driver is the one that takes pride in his car and in his work. And that's exactly what this channel shows ! Thank you :D
Just bought myself a completely stock Nissan Skyline GTR R33 in midnight purple. It's been my dream for 15 years. The Datsun 240z is definitely next on my list. One day, one day.
The Z car was introduced in the states when I was ten, I fell in love with the car straight away and still love it to this day. There are plenty of cars that I have been enamored with since I was a kid and into my late adulthood, but that "crush" goes away after a while. Not the Z though. What a great looking car.
They live in a right hand drive country and the cars are right hand drive in origin. Anybody else find it kind of odd that they bought left-hand-drive cars?
Some people dream for R35's, lambo, ferrari. I'm a simple guy I dream for these old datsun's and nissans like the, S13 180sx, the 240z, the 300zx, r33. Hopefully one day I can have one of these to build into something I could call my own.
The L series does have quite a bit of valve noise stock, and if modified they have even more. That being said that sounds a bit excessive to me.. my 240z with an L28 and Stage 3 cam/performance springs and retainers isn't that loud.
Senator Armstrong, restoring America to its former glory Oh, it makes sense to me....and to which former 'glory' are YOU referring ? The constant and rather convenient assasination of sa few good men ? Iran, Vietnam, Bay of Pigs, losing China, stopping on the Elbe river, Wall Street Crash, isolationism and prohibition...racial segregation ? The Civil War, slavery, genocide of N.American Indians.....just when were the good old days please - I'm confused ! American History X Film (1998)
tehmorbias Hello mate. When the committee ask me to ! ;-) I won't feel wanted otherwise. Already had Burnsie on the phone before news broke of Geoffs pasing away...never mentioned 'em keen to have me back ! Hope all is well with you and yours.
Nice vid. If the Rat is 'an animal to drive', it's because the suspension needs sorting; stiff doesn't mean difficult. A 240Z is and should be following mods a very easy sports-car to drive at any speed - tha's what made them so good and competitive.
Agreed, but with wide r-comp tyres they can be a real bear at slower speeds. But I suppose the same can be said of just about any non-power steering car... Anyway, once you get used to it, if driving it daily, you barely notice it.
ryant67 Yeah, mine has 225/50s on 8x15 a mix of anti-roll bar thicknesses and steering knuckle spacers at the front...but then I also have progressive PS which filters out all that bad-effect - we fit 'em on all our Zs and even on the track it's brill...I switch it off on wet tracks though - it all happens too fast otherwise :-). Keep on Zedding (not Zeeing...).
Amazing to see this Gem from Copenhagen - Denmark again! Always wondered where it went! Nice that its beeing used as its supposed to be! Please take the 800 miles trip to Copenhagen again and we will arrange a Datsun Z meet in the Area :)
I bought a used 73 240Z in 1977, it had about 33,000 miles and was cherry. I was like 24 yrs old, gas was cheap and I had the best times driving the Z. I had one episode while being pursued by a state police car. I had enough of a lead and was coming down Mt. Greylock at high speed. Came to a sharp corner covered with sand, knowing I would'nt make the corner decided to not go for the turn and straight off a 25 ft jump into a hayfield. The cop went by shortly after but never saw us. I looked at my buddy who was totally freaked and laughed. Just one story with the Z I'll never forget.
Conspiracy theorists would say .....after WWII the Americans contaminated Japanese steel, "rustbugs" I think they call them. Any who, that's why most 240 Z are so rusty.
Owned a 280Z 2+2 back in the 80's, fast car, it didn't like 55 mph. It was comfortable over 90 mph any time. Car was stolen twice, than I had too many speeding tickets, so I sold it. Last ten years I'm into BMW's, gives a sporty ride (5 speed stick), hugs the road nice has a good trunk and space for 5 to sit!
If you guys have any leads on a 2000GT in Western Europe I'd love for it to feature in one of the next films I make for Petrolcious. I hope you liked this one!

Good to see two together. Couldn't afford one in 1970. My 280Z since 1985 been with me longer than my marriage. Not a fast car in today's standard, it is fun driving for sure. Don't think I would ever sell it.
Every Datsun I ever knew ran like it was sloppy and loose like it suffered from high milage They all smoke just alittle bit but man they just never stop going. Hearty little engines.
I've got my 74 Z loved it since the day I saw it. It's got some rust spots, primer areas with a widebody but I only care about how it feels to drive it. Gas smell and all
***** It's idling quietly in the corner waiting for next Sunday's video to see if I can patch it back up. For right now I'm just gonna keep driving the Sonett.
This is the power and the glory of creating one's own version of automotive heaven for oneself. Datsun Zee's are a prime example of a great car to modify to suit one's own tastes or pocketbook. Easy to work on, lots of tuner, junkyard or NOS parts. They've become a classic in stock or modified form and best of all, they're still fun to drive. Someone mentioned that the Zee's look like a Ferrari 250 and/or a Toyota 2000GT. How about a Zee that looks like both a Ferrari 250 and the Toyota 2000GT? Long live the kit car with a Zee chassis.
YEAH exactly in fathers discription when he explain the rattiness of the Z,I also on a series 1 since a year now. burnt californian blue paint and right now iam pulling out the stock l24 to put in a l26 with flattops and a 0.03` overbore topped with a N42 slightly shaved.cant wait to get the sound back to my ears !:) Martin from Hannover , germany
Absolutely Love your vids mate. Only criticism id like to make is that the internal sound recording device you use always boosts the treble... sounds like every car is a beetle with loose tappets @ 5k rpm, use it .. don't... either way keep up the brilliant work.
Noice, I quite like the rat style - there's another clip on /DRIVE I think, the 'No F*cks Given RX7' and it's taken the 'rat' theme a fair bit further. I wish there were more vids of rat style cars, I just can't get enough!
"What do you get when you cross a rusted 1971 Datsun 240Z with a Chevy 4.3L V6 and a turbo from a Ford Power Stroke Diesel? The Rotsun!" Quote directly form the description on the video.
another nice petrolicious video = thanx! I thought a part fell off the ratty z at 4:57 ... had to look again = glad it was only water (or gas). please give us more interior driving scenes. agree, the z borrowed more than a few great design lines from the 365 GTB/4 = also my favorite car.
kinda hard driving my Z knowing how the engine works but the others dont know i do!You should drive the that you love and the other way around :Greets from Hannover
What's up with all these people spouting all this "rich kid" hate nonsense? It's not as if Ollie here is driving a $80k Ferrari - he has a Datsun for crying out loud. They aren't THAT expensive, so he has very likely paid for it with money he earned himself... Get over yourselves, and stop being dicks. Anyway... Two similar cars taken in very different directions, one is more focused on aesthetics and the other almost entirely on performance. Very much like the interior of the sons, with the custom quilted door panels, similar to original but nicer transmission tunnel quilt, and tasteful touches throughout. Need those cracks on the dash repaired though, heh! Also like the mirrors on it, different, but not too different. I don't recognise that front air dam, anyone know who makes it? Nice deep dish mesh wheels on it too! Would have been nice to hear, or even see, more of what the father has done to his Ratsun. He mentions almost everything being new under the skin, so it would have been interesting to see how far he has taken it. I obviously saw the triple Webers, which is always a worthwhile and intoxicating upgrade. Nice, wide, Watanabe wheels with R888's tucked under ZG arches, very nice. Wanted to see more though, instead of artistic close-ups that show almost nothing. Interesting car, but this was just a tease... Petrolicious: Making this video 2 minutes longer and having some of the usual exterior parked shots would have been nice.
For the armchair experts those engines would smoke without too many miles just the way they were. Nothing wrong with them Friends 4 ft something girlffriend drove his 240 daily everywhere, not tough to drive at all. Too easy to get spoiled by todays cars Remember the first pieces I ever actually polished properly was his valve covers. Ah to be 18 on my own young and stupid again!
FACT: Every "rust-free" Z-car hides internal structural Rust.
FACT: They came from the factory with Rust installed as standard equipment.
Was there a option for extra rust?
MrGovenator1
An "Extra Rust Option" for purchase was not available in my memory.
But I'm sure the factory installed an 'Extra Rust Bonus' at absolutely no charge for most buyers.
This was part of a 'Surprise Option' package many owners discovered at a sooner, rather than later date, along with the foggy crazing clearcoat option.
MrGovenator1 That was a dealer installed option.
I love my rust, its pretty minimal, which is to say, unnoticeable
Yep - just like the 60's and early 70's 911's, and almost everything made by GM back then. {except the Corvette - their frame rusted}. Funny thing is, I still have the 72 240Z I bought new at the end of 1971. No rust so far.. but hey - it only a matter of time.

The 240Z may be the most balanced design ever. Perfect proportions.
Hasn't aged in over 40 years !
As all things should be.
I love the fact the guy actually have ferraris but he prefers is datsun, that is against 90% of people out there, and just a testament to the undereconized Japanese engineering, just hope I can buy a few before the market understand the value of this cars...
Where do you come up with the figure of 90% ffs? I'd much rather have the Datsun than some bloated Ferrari built for show-offs.

"The engine has be rebuilt to original spec" hard cuts to the car burning oil.
I did have a pretty good chuckle at that part.
Hey now, they burned oil from the factory! lol.
+nick fernandez It looked kinda dirty for a restored engine
Robert G All I can say for certain is that if it was rebuilt it wasn't rebuilt well.
+nick fernandez lmao was thinking the same thing
that must make the dad so happy that his son is also his car buddy

You guys capture the passion so well with your videos.
Two awesome cars. Great story, I hope when my boys get older they will enjoy going out with me on a Sunday afternoon, blasting around and looking at each others cars.
Great job guys , that last clip side by side down the freeway sums it up . Spot on .
My old man bought one in 73, I loved it. Still I wish he bought a GTV 2000 Alfa. Now there was a car with looks and killer fun.
I fucking love Datsun 240z's.
Great video ! I really do enjoy your channel. You have the greatest cars and the most respectful people... A real driver doesn't win competitions, a real driver is the one that takes pride in his car and in his work. And that's exactly what this channel shows ! Thank you :D
"no maintenance whatsoever" ADJUST YOUR FREAKING VALVES KID
your videos are car porn . absolutely awesome. peace and love
Just bought myself a completely stock Nissan Skyline GTR R33 in midnight purple. It's been my dream for 15 years. The Datsun 240z is definitely next on my list. One day, one day.
Love watching these 240/260/280Z videos from Petrolicious, makes miss my old 280 much more

Get one?
does it sound like valves knocking to everybody?
aye, both sound like they have been worked on by the local nursery
The L series does have quite a bit of valve noise stock, and if modified they have even more. That being said that sounds a bit excessive to me.. my 240z with an L28 and Stage 3 cam/performance springs and retainers isn't that loud.
They're louder than mine have ever been. Sounds like they're in need of a valve adjustment.
Tony - Diana Fruzza Theyre supposed to be loud. Tighter valve lash moves the power band up and makes more noise
yeah, pretty noisey, but thats pretty standard fare on these cars. If they were quiet, I would be concerned. Mine are fairly loud as well.
Doubt he will ever need to sell it considering he has more money than most...
Daddys boy
I love seeing Z videos, I miss mine... The only car I've ever really been passionate about, there will be one in my garage again someday.
It's cool to see that the rat rod look has caught on internationally.
I agree.

Cool car mate . These were well appreciated in Australia too.

Gorgeous 240Z.. I would love to have one of those. Maybe the clean look.
Another great video, every time I think great production, direction, editing. Don't know who does your videos but keep it up.
Good to see two together. Couldn't afford one in 1970. My 280Z since 1985 been with me longer than my marriage. Not a fast car in today's standard, it is fun driving for sure. Don't think I would ever sell it.
LOVE that quilted interior!!
both sweet rides, those 240's are fast. And that design style is timeless.
Such beautiful craftsmanship, I hope in the future I can own this car.

that's my freaking dream car you're talking about there, show some respect!
Loving that quilted interior!
My mom had a 280 ZX turbo in the mid 80's, it was a blast to drive as a teenager but that old school turbo lag was atrocious.
iconic car like many others
The rat rod has a lot of valve noise and the clean one that's built to a "maintenance free high standard" is burning oil. LOLZ!
I absolutely love the way those things look.
Thanks for sharing! I got a 350z supercharged and its a keeper!
These are the cars my Saab is always mistaken for..
And my 240z is always called a Porsche. I get "Hey nice Porsche!!" yelled at me all the time :)
The "I used to have a Datsun just like that" is something I hear every time I drive it.
The Saab is way way more rare.

I've seen this comment on another 240z video

I see one that's been sitting in Dickinson Texas for a few years now I don't know what they are doing with it
That garage door alone could buy a car.
I am from Copenhagen, I remember that car up for sale. Haha
i’m working on rebuilding an L28 engine and am curious what the engine setup is for these two cars. can you please provide those details?
best video till now
Are the ratsuns flares original ZGs or who's? They look great, I want a set.
For the armchair experts those engines would smoke without too many miles just the way they were. Nothing wrong with them
Friends 4 ft something girlffriend drove his 240 daily everywhere, not tough to drive at all. Too easy to get spoiled by todays cars
Remember the first pieces I ever actually polished properly was his valve covers. Ah to be 18 on my own young and stupid again!
Sponsored by daddy done exactly right, great Cars!!

I loved my 260Z but it rusted to pieces so fast it was unbelievable.
