Dare to Be Different in a Datsun 240Z

- Owner Dave Scholz, shares his connection with a Japanese cult classic that could easily be regarded as the 911 of Japan. Its iconic beauty, modular mechanics, and desirability inspired Dave to heed to Datsun's famous racing campaign of the '70s, "Dare to be different."
American heads spun when the 1970s ultimately snuffed out their beloved horsepower-drunk muscle cars. As the world watched them squirm for performance, Japan was busy developing the 240Z to bring a new thrill to American roads using balance, harmony, and technology.
"Datsun didn't invent the overhead cam engine, or disc brakes, or independent suspension but it has a habit of incorporating these sophisticated systems into brilliantly conceived and easily affordable cars." (Car and Driver; June, 1970)

This was the first video by Petrolicious I watched and I was 15 at the time. I started saving money and looked basically over the whole US on craigslist. A couple weeks ago I found the perfect Z down in Tennessee and had it shipped up. 2 years of saving and now I have an awesome 78 Black Pearl.
That sounds like an awesome story. Enjoy your project.
Enjoy it, and please drive it, don't keep it in the garage
+10mars6pa Realizing what your dream car is and buying it because of Petrolicious? Damn, this channel should feature your story of having your car.
+10mars6pa I too saw this video at a prelicense age, 14 I think. It inspired me to scour the upper United States looking for the perfect Z. I ended up finding one in Nebraska which is about 7 hours from Minneapolis, convinced my dad that I needed this car. We drove down that Friday night to pick it up on Saturday morning. The 72' 240Z is a perfect California car. It pains me to write this up as I am in the last week or so of drivable weather.
+10mars6pa +Mitchell Wagner Im gonna join in with you guys as well and say that the same exact thing happened to me because it did! 15 years old when I saw the vid, searched for months until I finally found the perfect one here in Texas. 17 now and I own a 1972 lime yellow Z :D Pretty cool how powerful a video can be.
Had to come back to hear it again
And again, and again, and again....
What is it that makes his car sound so good? Is it the Rebello engine or the exhaust?
+raife1218 I'm asking myself the same thing. Its probably the best sounding vehicle I've ever heard :)
coming back for the sound every few months
raife1218 the exhaust is a straight pipe, so that's what makes it loud but it's the engine that makes it sound good as well. they make a nice noise at high rpm and it helps that his is bored over and pretty much a built race motor.
and again...
3:43 my favorite sound track
Gabriel Rosales I got asmr from the lol
Been coming back here every few months for the last 8 years!
Rarely do I find videos on youtube that I come back to on a regular basis, but this video just keeps showing up on my recommended list and I can't help myself from watching this video again and again. I can't wait to buy my z.
Amazing. My 280Z gets a story from everyone over 40. I never understand some of them, about 1/3 have wrapped the car around a tree, pole, etc. The car is so driver friendly, to me, the harder you drive it. The sweeter it gets.
Brad Riley same with my 280zx
Just bought a '76 Datsun 280z, and it is unbelievable to look at a car and smile so much. Doesn't even run! That's when you know you found you're perfect car, to where it can be the most run down, rusted, dilapidated example of it and it can still make you smile.
High reving ,carbies and a good ol datsun L series God the sound it makes its just One of The best sounds an engine could make
such a raw sound from a japanese muscle car... my dream project car along with the kenmeri skyline
I watch this film every week. Perfect noise
Damn that exhaust note. I'd record that and fall asleep to that sound track every night
This is what a like about old sports cars. They have this special thing that normal cars of today dont have.
I mean , its connected to you ..
I should prefer this above a Lamborghini or a Ferrari ..
Petrol Head if u have money million dollar lambo or Ferrari n old school abit cheap.mustang or camaro quite nice n cool.
you officially are a "Petrol Head"
Ok petrol head how about comparing to a "real" sportscar like say an Austin Healy 3000, Both 6 ycyl, both RWD The Healey gonna eat that Z for breakfast while being a generation older. Get real a 240Z is roughly comparable to a 1953 MG.
2017... still watching and dreaming about this car as the first time. Timeless episode, amazing car.
This was one of the videos that inspired me to move to CA for those canyon roads a decade ago.
I made it. In an Audi A3 Quattro for now after selling my 350Z, but I'll be in a classic Z someday
From one S30Z owner to another - Great video. Makes me miss driving mine. Hurry up summer.
absolutely in love with that paint job.
Liam g
It just puts a smile on your face.
FINALLY! A 240Z that doesn't have any atrocious over fenders has been featured! I thought there was never going to be a nice looking 240Z featured that didn't have over fenders.
Need moar grip
Easily the best video on RUclips. Love this car and the Story!
After watching this video when it first came out I made it my goal to have a 240z, so I saved and looked around I brought/imported one about 4 months ago from Holland that had been imported originally from California. insurance was surprisingly cheap for a 24 year old and in that 4 month period ive got an MOT on the car and DVLA signed it off last week, new UK plates have arrived and tomorrow I finally get to drive it on the road, I cant wait !
Thankyou to this bloke and his Z and to Petrolicious for inspiring me to get my own Z.
hi Lloyd, iam from germany...did you bought your Z from Joop Stolze in Rotterdam?
Hi Martin, no I brought the car from Hofman Leek in Rodenburg. I did try and buy a Z from Joop Stolze but they wouldn't come down on the price on the Z I wanted.
Hofman in Leek is also well known Datsun seller in europe(especially germany)
Yeah i bought my HLS3016480 from Joop and i CAN confirm that Mr. Stolze is a tough business man through and through!!!HAHA
BUT i paid for mine 9000€. in really not bad condition! Thats fair
He certainly is a tough one, I couldn't even get a few hundred off the price haha
Yes that's a fair price indeed, have you owned it long, and have you done much to it ?
i purchased it in july 2017. so i did work on the brakes especiall new master cylinder incl. vacuum.
polyethylen bushings and tokico shocks and eibach springs.
but there is work on the engine now!! new piston rings, bearings And tune up the E31 head..its a rare head with best flow and a good compression ratio of all stock heads.
urs is almost stock or?
i still comeback to this video even all this years😂
Amazing. The sounds stay with you long after it is over. Much love. Fantastico!!!!!
People are so different. I like 80's and early 90's cars. Not into earlier versions, because due to style and availability of spare parts.
03:47 Dat note, oh my word....
Funny how he is wearing a alpha romeo t-shirt.
My dad used to ride me around in one of these and he took it wherever he went. All around the island in Puerto Rico or on business trips to the US, the company he worked for paid for him to export his car and drive it wherever he wanted to.
This is my favorite video out of all thier others, I love it
Was so excited when I finally picked up my 1980 280ZX from an impound auction for $700, only to find that the whole frame is rusted. It actually bends and compresses if you try to set it on a jackstand. :(
So now I can only lift it from suspension components to do any work, but I'm thinking it's a little too far gone to try and bring it back...
amazing looking engine
Dream car, hands down
that sweet sound of a an old datsun NA straight 6 ;) cant any better than that. Love the vid and the car. Anyone know what canyon that was shot in? I know the shoot was done in parts of downtown LA
I'm happy too.
with a brand new zstory exhaust in contrast to the stock manifold and pipes i ran until october 2020...
5 stars, had a 280z in Hawaii ( 85-89 )
Very Cool Video!
Really beautiful car.
What is the exhaust? is it straight pipped and what is it made of? reminds me of the old Ferrari exhausts. Glorious sound!!!
Greets from Hannover,lower saxony,germany
Ok, 240's are damn near impossible to find anymore unless people want too much money for them. The 260's only real problem was the terrible Hitachi SU carbs, people replace them with actual SU's or webers and the car will be fine. Now that SMOG testing isn't such a serious issue on older cars. The earlier 280's are actually really good, they were around 180 HP and the EFI was a solid and still usable system. The cars have really good parts availability as well.
The 240Z was ubiquitous at one time on the American highways. Same price as a Camaro back in the early 70's.
Dammit now I want one...
Actually the real slogan was "Datsun, We Are Driven".... then around 1973 "Datsun Saves"
The "Do it in a Datsun" was NOT a Datsun slogan as everybody was using the "Do It" for everything from sailing, horseback riding, diving, to cooking. So bumper stickers and license plate frames were made for Fords, Chevies, Toyotas, etc. With the "Do It in a _____"
"Do It" Meant wink, wink, Sex.
What's the exhaust setup, sounds amazing. I want it for my 76
One of my good Buddy’s in High school had a 72, so many Road Tips in that car, and we both beat the 💩💩 out of it, it was Bulletproof.
Great guy, great car.
nothing more to say.
Yeah it fills up car understanding for the younger Generation. iam 39 not Young not old :) just Right hahahah
So i like to add to the dicription from headwhacker :
iam german , he is american guy , we both know many sportcars from their own countries but :
ITS HARD TO BEAT THE FEELING DRIVING A Z-CAR , especially the light weights 240z's until early 71.
Anyone know what those rims are? Tire size??? Fits the car beautifully.
Joshua Rojas Rims are Watanabe RS
Needed a listen... my 3/4/5th :)
i would love to have one of these but here in Portugal they are rare or even non-existant
240z was much better looking then the Jaguar e type at that time. The proportions on the 240z was more on point compared to the Jaguar.
That thing is gorgeous and makes me have to buy a TRUE Z car now.
Rebello built nissan L28 modded to 3.0 straight six. nasty huh? ;-)
(A Correspondence Between Toshikuni Nyui of Nissan and Albrecht Goertz)
Dear Mr. Goertz:
At your request, we have examined the relevant evidence pertaining to the development of the highly successful Datsun 240Z which was first introduced in 1969.
You were retained by Nissan during the period from 1963 to 1965 as an automotive design consultant. During that period, you consulted with Nissan on the basic methods of styling a general sports car. You were also the sole design consultant on a two-liter sports car which Nissan was trying to develop as part of a joint venture with Yamaha. This car was not produced.
While it is our view that the design of the 240Z was the product of Nissan’s design staff, Nissan agrees that the personnel who designed that automobile were influenced by your fine work for Nissan and had the benefit of your designs.
Sincerely yours,
Signed Toshikuni Nyui

Whatever the level of involvement Goertz had, it’s not hard to imagine that whatever he touched, he left his mark of genius. In November 2006, Albrecht von Goertz died at the age of 92, leaving behind an influence and legacy that will no doubt, live forever.
back again
I come back once a month just for the beautiful sound the car makes
mzondi1970 Man, i just come back every week, i want a 240Z so much ...
Sadly like a lot of the Japanese classics the prices are climbing. Findin a decent one will be tough
They're climbing like the prices of all the classics today, no ? Or only Japanese classics in particular ?
anything from the 60s and 70s are climbing. The world has finaly caught on that old Japanese cars are collectable
+mzondi1970 buying one in japan would be cheap right?
Still monkeying around with this car and loving it! Hello there 1M views, kinda cool! 👌
Anywhere folks can follow your work with car? Build thread, Instagram, or such?
ryant67 sure thing, instagram: sennavsprost 🍻
good man, thanks!
Where can I get that jacket
Dave Scholz thanks for sharing Dave, based in this and my neighbor growing up having one, I just bought an '85 300Z
Hard to believe it's been 8 years but I still come back to listen
Yeah, it sounds great
How has your life been, got any cars you dreamt of?
@@anjr6282 I'm overdue to watch it my life has gotten a lot more busy I've been dealing with cancer issues for the last 2 years but I still love the sound of the car I'll never own electric could I'd rather drive a slow car that makes a good noise and anything that sounds like a damn vacuum cleaner
So am i
Probably about the 20th time I’ve watched this exact video, the sound brings me back every time
Still watching this video 5 years later. This is why you don't put an LS in a Datsun this sounds so fantastic
i love that you’re still commenting. this really is one of those videos that you gotta keep coming back too.
@@teddyn3051 certainly is. On the so important in the driving experience for me in this car sounds incredible
Love to see you coming back. I come once or twice a month...this is my favourite car ever
This is a lovely sports car. Sounds glorious, looks sexy and has a great story.

Still coming? I am
Still coming back? I am!
@@jockey101 Yup! me 2
a year ago I watched this video and I wanted a Z more than anything. This vid lit some kind of hellacious fire under my ass and I set out to find one. After about 6 months I found one. 1977 z in 411 yellow.... I'm a broke college kid and ended up selling my 2001 Jetta and took the money to buy the z.... and I've never looked back since. Thank you Dave for causing me to make one of the best decisions I've ever made.
Chris Laswell wow thats very inspiring looks like there will be 2 broke college students driving the z pretty soon
As a 52 year old, (who owned a ‘69 & ‘72 TR6, a ‘67 MGBGT-cars that were killed by Datsun’s 240Z as well as Triumph’s GT6/Stag & who has driven a 240, 260, & 280 Zs, Porsche 911, HiPo Honda Civic Si, Mazda RX7, & other, more forgettable sports cars all before breaking my neck skiing), who hasn’t driven anything but a wheelchair for about 3 decades, I sure enjoyed this video & all of the interesting comments. Thanks very much🙏🏼.
7 years later.. Because of this video, I finally own a 240z. I still watch this video regularly
Woah i might buy one soon :0
If it still exist...
I'm still looking for one... They are like $50k+ in Austalian now...
I would love to hear this in person
Sometimes I get tired of wrenching on my '72, then I come here to watch / hear that 3.0 Rebello scream... all good to go again. That is all.
Ken S Holly shit! Me too, I wrench my 73. Just dropped in a 79 280zx 5 speed tranny.
Dude same, Iv'e got a '72 as well and as you know there is always something you've got to do for her. But at the end of the day when you're behind the wheel of any Z, your'e in for the ride of your life!
How much for the setup
This car.
Sounds.
So.
Damn.
GOOD
niceprince that the first thing I liked about it ! Thing sounds beast!
i love the datsun's and when i tell someone that i love datsun's then they look at me like what the fuck is a datsun:(
you're hanging out with the wrong people.
true they are not car people and they cost money!
+max vloger i feel ya! same here man :/
I've got a '66 Datsun roadster that I love. Still want a 240, though.
Nissan needs to build these again.
FR-S is the closest thing to it you can drive. Its practically a modernized carbon copy of the S30
Not till I can get a 76! Then remake them. Because they will Rocket up in value. Need to purchase mine cheap. And never let go of it.
FRS will never sound like this...
Its a Z. It would be like saying "I wish they sill made corvettes". They do, its just not the same car and for a lot of good reasons. The 370z really is some of the best bang for the buck you can get today. 330 - 350 hp right from the factory out of a naturally aspirated v6 with a warranty. Not to mention better engineered for handling and the like. But good news, if you really must have a classic fairlady...you can buy them all day on craigslist. I just don't know why a car company HAS to build the same car unchanged for decades. Then it becomes nothing more then a beetle or ford focus. When everyone has that car, it doesn't really stand out. Also, that is terrible when it is suppose to be a competitive sports car.
leftcoaster67 ... I do agree ! Very very good idea ! (I had 3 amazing sporty Nissan and Datsun yet ,I have kept the 6 on line one (Skyline), now ready to buy a 240z with 0 kilometers ,carbu if possible And 6 on line of course, around 1200 kg max for the closest body replica ,atmo ...or turbo (why not) ,and please... No electronics Gremlins inside !!!) . And about the price I have an idea myself : Ask to some economist to calculate the actual price from the 1970 price (1,08 x 29600 Francs = 31968 Euros (Dollars)) ,easy to do ,and it will be a doble marketing world blast ! The best global advertising a car manufacturer could imagine ; And Nissan is The manufacturer able to do that if it exist one ! (Nissan Directors ,call me I can do all the marketing plan if you make the car ).
240Z > all other Z's..
Zzzzz for the other Z's
Agreed. I had a '72... My brother had a '75. Another guy in my hometown had a '73 with a L28 block with L24 head. That Z could hook up!
@@michaelmurray8295 Is it turbo?
I had a Rebello powered '74.5 260Z as my daily driver from 1987-1993. Widened, lowered, well over 300 HP, and insanely fun to drive. I come back to this youtube video from time to time to wax nostalgic and remember when all I had to do was walk out to the driveway if I wanted to hear this sound. The owner in the video's description of the lag below 5000 rpm is spot on, the backfire and flame throwing is also accurate. Irrespective of the sound, the thing I miss the most is getting in, turning the key and driving off in the morning. Even if work sucked, driving that car was a daily pleasure that I never took for granted. I lived in a condo complex and would get notes on my windshield from time to time from my neighbors who didn't appreciate their 5:30 am wakeup every weekday. Funny, none of them ever complained to me in person on Saturday or Sunday. I wonder why? For some reason, I have no pictures of the car, so all I have left are the memories, this video and the license plate I am looking at: Virginia - 1 QuickZ.
I'd be quite thrilled to be woken up every morning at 530 by this sound.
BEST EPISODE EVER !!!!! The 240 Z is the best Z of all time & that noise is phenomenal :)
My favourite car of all time
who’s still here in 2019?

Not long ago saw a beautifully restored white Z smashed to shit in downtown SF. The other car was a junky Volvo 240 GL.
The owner walked away, but the Z is beyond recognition. A damn shame.
Ultra80s volvo 240aint bad lmao
1:46 I hope he repaired that front-bumper. that thing is all over the place.
It looks like it's missing a bolt on that corner.
The most beautiful Z car ever made. Period.
People kill for parking spots at my university, whenever I take my 76 280z, people literally wave to me and surrender the parking space that they worked hard to find. Respect.
sure they do
It feels like the 370 will never be "THAT" car compared to a 240z.
the 370z can’t compare to the 240z if it can’t even compare to the 350z
Of course not.i have a 280zx i think style of this cars is just beautiful.but after this they dont look good.my opinion
@@JoseMartinez-jw2dy i have all three and the 370z does ..... its family !

Hell yea, Datsun
I recall watching this video about 10 times over and telling myself that one day I'd have one. After years of saving up, I finally acquired a 1977 Datsun 280z :). Thank you petrolicious. Thank you Datsun.
Same dream here. Now own a '78 280z! Congrats!
I could have had a late 69 240 if I'd been more forward when I was in high school, never had the balls to cross my old man by buying something for myself though. still regret it.
That would be a seriously valuable car today if it was kept out of the rain. Your dad would have eventually would have become proud of your smart investing acumen.
Probably watched this 100 or more times over the years. Can we get a follow up, “where they are now” with Dave and that amazing Z?
There is nothing like an old sportscar. It truly makes someone alive when they drive one with the smell of petrol, the looks of the car, the feel of its handling and speed, and the noise. Whether it is a muscle car, an old japanese or european sports car, these type of cars are timeless.
Perfection. It's quite literally perfect. I love everything about the way he has it done. Beautiful 240.
You could start doing a "revisited" series where you revisit people who starred in a Petrolicious film 5 or more years ago. It always sounds like they're not standing still, constantly evolving their skills & collection. Just an idea I thought I'd share!
Great idea!
My great aunt used to do costume design in Hollywood back in the '60s & 70's.
Back when they came out she had a choice between the 240Z and a Porsche. She chose the 240Z (It's not what I would have done, but It's not like either is a bad choice ). Pushing 100 years old and she still raves about it. To this day, whenever I visit the first things she wants to know ishow my car (280Z) is doing.
Not many cars these days inspire that level of passion.
I watched this video when it camed out, I still come back to it, dreaming of owning one someday, absolute dream of a car. And godamn, it sounds so good!
better looking than an E-type to my eye
kleinbottled79 I completely agree with you.
Well some nearly three years after first watching this video I've finally done it. I've just purchased my very own Series One Datsun 240z in the USA. Waiting to sort out the minor details before bringing it back to Britain to let the fun begin. I'm sure there will be a long road ahead, however thank you Petrolicious, you've inspired another young petrolhead who's now got a proper classic! Also thanks Dave, your car is awesome and has been an inspiration :-D
Bought mine in the US back in 08 - its now over here in the UK
@@SAXONWARLORD1000AD Nice, where in the UK are you? You don't see many around...
Absolutely stunning! This car is just loaded with style and character.
I had no idea these could sound so mean and nasty. OK, I'm in on these, haha. What a nice build. This is one of my favorite Petrolicious productions, as it has inspired pure automobile lust.
That exhaust sound is perfect...one of the best vintage 6 cylinder sounds I`ve ever heard!!! Amazing car dude!!!
I built a wicked 72 240z back in 1990 I pulled the tired 240 out and put in a built 280ZX motor with carbs. I fully polished everything on that engine. I spent an entire summer doing the bodywork and paint. I put on a real nice body kit from the Z shop in Orange California. I made a awesome custom grill and put on headlight covers. I had a smoke peal yellow PPG custom color mixed by Stan Betz a famous hotrod paint mixer guy. I shot it my self with with ghosted flames on the hood and fenders and when the hood opened they continued down on the inner fender wells. I also shot the same scheme on my jet ski to match. Paint job was flawless took the car to Boyds hotrods and they said it was the best paint job they had ever seen. Car would top out at 138 MPH on the freeway and to me at age 21 that was amazing. I kept the automatic transmission in it as it had a over ride switch under the gas pedal that made it shift at redline that made that car a mustang killer. Big second gear chirp G ride. I really regret selling that one....I went into vintage 912 Porsches after the Z days. Lots of hot steamy lovers lane makeout seasons in that beast with my little hot blonde girlfriend back then. Plush tan sheepskin seat covers a good heater and 1000 watt Alpine system with 2 12 inch Pyle driver Pro woofers that put out massive bass in a custom box I made. I was a legend.
Erin boat guy own a 280zx myself, great engines
I watched this video every year.. never have been so in love with a car.. now a proud owner of a 1978 280z. Thank you for the inspiration!
personally, taking out the straight six L and shoving in an american SBC takes the soul out of that car, making it really just another hotrod.
Love the video! Love the car! The design was refined from others to perfection, like the samurai sword becoming its own unique beauty.
OMG The sound of that Car is pure sex.
15 years ago i fell in love with the early Zs. Few years after that i found this video and of those 1. something million views i bet its my fault for around 300k of those. Today FINALLY i bought one. Never saw one live until today, just pictures on google and this video mainly, honestly the car needs some stuff. Bumpers, exhaust are the main thing but i will get it sorted. I just wanted to share my hapiness with everyone and to whoever is like me 10-15 years ago, dreaming of owning one, keep working on it, one day you will have one! Dont give up!
I want to restore one someday. Beautiful car, great work.
where can i get a jacket like that?
lolol I was thinking the same thing
I remember messaging Dave on Instagram back in 2014 after buying my first 280z. We kept up here and there on social media. Years later on a whim, I told him I’d be making a road trip out to so-cal with a dear friend of mine. On a perfect summer day in 2019 we drove up his driveway and he met us with a couple of cold Lacroixs and showed us his Z. To make it even better he offered to take me on a spin around the block. He ended up pulling off and tossing me the keys to drive it back. I reminisce now back to that day. Dave is such a cool guy and yes - the emotions you feel watching this video are 10x more enhanced experiencing it in person. One of my favorite memories.
