IDIOT! Dumb Dumb Speed Shop FAILED Clutch Install?

  • We're back on the Nomad! Parts finally showed up and we are quick to install them. I'm still fresh off of the failed clutch install from a few weeks ago. So naturally I have the feeling of "once bitten, twice shy"
Anyway, I power though and install a new flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, though out bearing ect. With the motor and transmission painted, it all goes together for final install.

Mr. Dan in the future, you may want to try this to take those old cast iron exhaust headers and soak them in used motor oil (for best results at least a month) and then bolt them on. They'll smoke like crazy, but when that smoke is gone, they'll be the prettiest black and never rust again.

Any SBC except 400 SB will work as long as its the large diameter. Check your tooth count. If the starter bolts to bell its se as 5thru 7 cars & up to 71 truck. That starter nose will fit any GM Delco starter motor. You can build a high torque unit from BOP parts. Early junkyard innerchange. Been doing it for 50+ years. Have fun.

Hey Dan, love your show. When you assemble your clutch assembly, you should start with your alignment tool through the clutch into your flywheel. It should be able to hold your clutch in place while you install your pressure plate. Take care Dan from Wayne in Quebec. 👍

Dan dan you are making a terrible mistake .. look you must use the correct bolts in the pressure plate . I didn't one time many moons ago in my 68 chevellle dan i rompt on it and speed shifted and the pressure plate snapped the bolts off pressure plate spit and became a giant saw blade and came thru the floor board cut a passengers foot destroyed the sterio destroyed the distributor destroyed the starter and the headers and after i got it all back together,, i then found out I had a bent crank. Also parts went through the hood.... You will never read this anyway... Maybe it will not blow up on you ..

Needs to remove the column and go thru the shifter assembly. I know on pick-ups it is adjustable. I'd assume the 55-?? cars had same set-up. Not sure why he didn't remove cover at bottom of bellhousing? Then trying to stab the trans with engine swinging...had to take 5 extra blood pressure pills watching this.

  • @billywird

Yes sir that setup you have with the power pack heads and the early staggered valve cover pattern would show an engine setup that is pretty much original but giving the impression that we have an engine out of a Corvette in those early model years with the difference being that the engine is a 327 instead of a 283. You get your column shifter mechanism squared away and the car will be a good driver. The only exception is when this car was new our automotive buying public had more standard shift vehicles and people did not mind the constant stop light to stop light gear shifting (automatics were not as prevalent as they are now). Of course, these days with all of the traffic we have automatics are naturally preferred, but this car gives one a taste of a mild performance setup that is drivable. Of course, I will put my two cents worth in here and say no to a tunnel ram manifold setup. A conversion to a dual exhaust setup using the original exhaust manifolds would be good with stock mufflers as they give the best noise quietness and will still retain good drivability. This car is too nice to veer into radical hot rod stuff. I have done the same thing with engine compartments as you have by polishing the firewall and painting just the stuff that was black as came from the factory. It's not going to make or break your day, but this is the way I would do this car if it were mine. You get that overdrive unit working and that will make a good cruiser for some of these cruise meets and such. You may find that if the rear axle is original the rear end ratio may be a 3:73 unit. That gives good all around street performance and with the overdrive of course good highway performance.🥸👍👍👍👍👍
