- Another day, another Nomad problem! Today we dive back into the top end of small block in this wagon. I really thought the old warped intake manifold I had on the car was causing all my problems.
Well, a few hundred dollars and 8 hours later it wad time to start this car and solve all my problems.... Or so i thought.
It ends in utter failure, as per usual

I don't think Edelbrock will ever give you any freebies now.
Dan seems a little tired - you guys produce a ton of content, hope you don't burn out!
That's not water vaper
Hi Guys. .. With respect to your Nomad and the smoking issue. .. About a hundred years ago ( YUP ... I'm OLD ! ), I had a similar issue with ( YUP, Wait for it ...... ) my '55 Chevy 210 ( 350 / 4 speed ). .. Turned out that one ( OR BOTH ? ) of my head gaskets simply decided not to play anymore. .. I pulled the valve covers and checked the head bolt torque, to find a good number of them were no longer torqued to the proper foot pound. .. I retorqued them ( IN THE CAR ! ) and before the engine even rose to temp, the smoke had stopped.
.
I drove it for another 8 years before selling it with zero issues.
.
Don't know if this will help, but, it did help me.
.
GOOD LUCK
haha wow. Never seen that before.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism haha wow, well, unless you have experienced it, you still haven't " Seen It ". .. It has, however, been factually explained.
@@jerrybrothekid I believe you misunderstood. I wasn't doubting you. "haha wow" wasn't sarcasm. More like "I'll be darned".
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism it's all good my friend, my bad. ..
Blue smoke on deceleration is valve seals
Hey Dan, get you a good radiator pressure tester - pump it up about 12 lbs. cold - if there is a substantial head gasket leak, you will see the pressure go down alright. Checking it hot is a little trickier because pressure will lower slightly as the engine cools.
Another check for head gaskets is to place a pressure tester on the radiator without pumping it up. If the pressure shoots up when you start it, then it's a head gasket.
I don't think it is head gaskets, because it smokes on deceleration. To me, that looks more like valve guide leakage.
Car looks real nice though!
@@domturchi Yeah, the thing is, he says it doesn't smell like anything though.
@@newtonfirefly3584 Yes, very good points made. If it were my project, I`d check for cooling system leakage; if there is no pressure loss then all is good in my book. The engine is liable to be a high mileage motor in which case the guides are worn (blue smoke) and rings too, but I`d just keep running and driving it and build another new engine to go into it later. Thanks for your insight and info my friend. Keep wrenching and having fun !!!
@@domturchi Yes indeed, that would indicate a blown head gasket for sure. Thanks for your insight and knowledge my friend. Keep them Cars Rolling !!!
Dan put valve seals in then a pcv valve as I told you before .
Looks white though.
can't put a pcv valve in those style of valve covers, no provisions and he's not changing the valve covers...
@@NoWr2RunI saw blue in the initial rev’s when it was warming up
@lowbudgetbob1155 you take the breather tube out drill a freeze plug and weld or braze a fitting in it then put it into the block , run a hose to the carburetor and put an inline pcv valve in it . Have done it many times to early motors .
Does Dan run every decision by you before he does it?
Up in Smoke at Dan's head-shop!
Love watching your journey and I'm grateful to be a part of it. Recommendation; STOP playing "chemist" with your engine. I recommend just using the right type of oil in the first place. If you are adding things to the oil, then you are not using the right type of oil. It's a roll of the dice when you start adding unknown items to a specifically engineered lubricating engine oil that is designed by very smart people. Test have shown when adding things to engine oil, they can "react" with the additive packages, making it harmful and well as cutting the viscosity down. Are you qualified to make your own engine oil product? Love you guys... keep it up.
Keep the Nomads and the Nova. sell everything else and build new desires at your new place with a lift. WE will watch Love you Guys
Can't sell Dani's 57, that's all her. Danny should sell this 55, he can always build something better.
Dans old school he probably payed cash for this property and letting on he’s broke , like Mortski we are going to loose the shop
@@number7__879No. It their halo-car. The Cobra and the 57 convertible are already for sale. Those should bring good money.
Bingo!
I had an ill fitting intake once and it was sucking oil from the lifter valley into the bottom of the intake ports. A very likely problem here. I do agree that the road draft tube needs to go away in exchange for a pvc system if the goal is a reliable cruiser.
You should have just bought some Valvoline VR1 20w50 it's already high in zinc and it's only $34 for the 6 quart jug
This is the way 🏴☠️
if it still smokes after it cools down pull the valve covers and look at the valve seals. if they are cracked oil leaks into the chambers causing the smoke condition. the seals can be replaced without removing the heads
I can see a definite blue tint to the smoke and that means oil. Most likely valve seals.
needs valve guide seals. chop the throttle and vacuum goes up sucking more through.
Blue smoke = oil consumption white smoke = water either in the exhaust or a leaking head gasket. I'll bet that your valve seals are shot with a motor that old. great looking car BTW! Dam lets get that shop cleaned up it's a disaster! LOL
Hi Dan. Before you pull that engine apart, make sure there is a baffle below the PCV valve in the cover. Ask me how I know, lol.
Another great day with DD Speed Shop!
Dan... trust me. I built a 327 SBC and brand new it smoked, leaked oil everywhere regarding the intake seals. Resealed the intake and valve covers... same exasperating issue. Pissed me off!! Dad worked at NAPA and said too much crank ase Pressure... put a old style Mopar breather on it (has a round top with one side angled off... and gold anodized look) with vac nipple for large hose to base of carburetor.
Installed the Mopar breather.... ALL issues went away immediately. I have used these MOPAR breathers on all of my hopped up SBCs ever since. Proven results.
White smoke coming out of the tailpipe usually indicates water of some sort. Water from an engine cleaning will make it smoke, but won't be that bad for very long. Excessive white smoke that lasts could be a cracked block or bad head gasket allowing coolant into the firing chamber. I think you'll be pulling that engine sooner than you think. At least it will be fun to watch ;)
I'm not a big fan of pulling a motor using a carb plate. Think about it, you're putting the weight of the entire engine on an aluminum intake and its bolts and gaskets, and the heads. If any of the head bolts are even a tiny bit loose there's a possibility of breaking the seal on those old head gaskets, not to mention tweaking the intake. We used to use lifting tabs, or a bolt in the block. Now we're lazy and just use the carb plate. Thoughts?
Hi from Arizona. Love watching how things come together. I have no idea why it is smoking... LOL
Years ago we use to use a coat hanger to clear out the drains in the cylinder heads. They would block regularly from the wax they used in the oil and caused the motor to smoke. Also would run a pressure test on the cooling system.
I'm soooo tired of pulling motors, That's what we do here at DD speed shop!
Agree 100% with water in exhaust…time to put a new dual exhaust system on😊
When I was turning wrenches, we would have cars that spent a lot of time parked or were just driven on very short trips with their mufflers filled with water. I think it was condensate from the everyday warming and cooling. We would drill an 1/8 inch weep hole, like those you'd sometimes find on new mufflers, in the bottom rear of the muffler and watch the water drain out.
Take care of the rust on the tow truck bed it stands out on the videos!
It needs a nice set of pipes and head gaskets
Uncle Buck!!!!
I would say Valve seals. just like the other guy said
Sucks that you obviously had a bad experience with Edelbrock. Great products for sure. I wouldn't touch a Holley unless I was drag racing.
Yikes, I would think that smoke would have cleared by now. Kinda thick smoke too. I think we may have a problem Houston 🤷♂️
Just seeing you throw stuff on the floor. Maybe you need to keep a wheel barrow in the shop to take the junk out lol !!
I use a swamp cooler too, and I would like to duct it across the front, thank you for sharing your experience.
New battery's gonna be the crowning jewel to a beautiful engine bay. Nice!
Hey Dan, on the 4th day of power tour. Wish you were here.
When it comes to working clean you are your own worst enemy. Cheers!
Awesome job. On getting the manifold replaced. Running smoothly now too. Keep up the great work.
Hey Guys
Thank you for another good video.
Take care 😊
So proud you didn’t hop it up or tunnel ram so proud
Dan you can’t beat that fix ,just drive and it’s good. A lot less smoke. Have a good day Dan
Hey. Strong radiator fan you got there. If noise is an indicator of performance, it might just have more power than the 350 smallblock. 😁
A temp relay on that thing will help both the quality of the vid's and the health of the 55's battery and alternator. -Just a thought ;)
Thanks for sharing this video with us
I can’t tell from the video, but if the white is steam it’s definitely water, but if it’s smoke, she’s about ready to give up the ghost
🤣Okay, that was funny with the grinder
Wow! $17.00 liter. And I thought things were expensive here.
Don’t take it apart until you find the problem.
That pickup with the wheel lift is a priceless.addition to your tool box.
Use a can of sea foam down the brakebooster vac. Line it will for shure clean it out so it won't smoke anymore that stuff works great
Check the valve seals, possibly after being stopped for a long time, the seals dry out and oil begins to flow into the chamber, and unfortunately no product or additive is miraculous. Greetings
Listen to Murr. It's fine, drive it. Heat and some miles will remove all the water in the exhaust and the "smoke" (steam) will subside. It didn't smoke before, so unless it blew the head gaskets while on the engine stand it's just the water from cleaning that's working it's way out. As evidenced by the carbon stains on the ground you're just steam cleaning the exhaust.
Pull the plugs, if one is clean it's the head gasket. Could be running lean on the carb.
I hope it gets better for you Dan the more you drive it buddy. Let’s keep our fingers crossed, but if not it’s in good hands. See you all on the next one. 👍😎✌️
Leakdown test 👍
Looks like you have a set of valve seals to do . But Just check your breather pipes are not holding crank case pressure.
who else can take a motor swap and make it last 2 weeks we love ya
I worked for Allube Company back in the 70s and we blended chemicals to make the additives Dan is using. We made Iskandarian Cam Lube, STP oil additives and because we were so high quality we were the only hot lamp oil manufacturer. It never discolored! Lol
Very nice car Dan .
It seems as though, someone has had a customer complaint experience with Eldebrocking!!!!!!!😅 Do you all have Rotella in Canada? I use T-4 in all my stuff! Looks damn good, period correct ✅!
water in the exhaust doesn't smoke when cold. It drips out. You are burning water with the plugs if it is white smoke.
Love that car! It's gorgeous. I know you like the patins, but a shiny car just turns heads.
Looks like a valve guide/stem seal deal to me. The water"smoke" is getting burnt out but it is sucking a bit of oil when it is back at full idle vacumn
Dani is always so sweet and positive 💕
When Dan started hacking the logo off of the intake, it was then that I knew Edelbrock must have offered a promotional package. After the Blue Chew debacle, I would have thought they would be aware of your "reputation".😉
drain the coolant out and run it see if the smoke subsides! if not pull the manifolds and look for the wet cylinder port(s)
Good afternoon from Cape Cod ⛵ Edelbrock carburetors and intakes are far superior to Holley, that's because Holley guys don't understand an Edelbrock carburetor. That's my rant 😂 there's absolutely no reason for that engine to be smoking because of a mechanical problem, water got in there that's all. All right guys keep up the great work and the awesome content, take that nomad for a nice long ride and then get back to us 👍✌️🇺🇲
Edelbroke carbs are junk!!!….i have one on my ‘77 square body and it’s getting a Holley very soon….its just garbage!!!
On day, in the not too distant future, the nice nomad deserves a genuine GM performance mill with a little blower on top.
I had a similar experience with a big block Chevrolet engine (396 out of a 68 El Camino, original engine with 78,000 miles) This engine was in a wrecked vehicle and I got it started and it ran very smooth. I installed it in a 69 El Camino (396/TH400). Of course I did as you and cleaned the engine up and painted it and also changed out the stock camshaft with a performance camshaft. I used the original intake and carburetor and of course installed headers on the engine. Well it ran OK but murphy's law got me as the cylinder head on the passenger side started to leak antifreeze on one corner. I could have put some stop leak in it but beings I had put out the money for a new radiator I just elected to pull the cylinder heads and just replace both head gaskets. The lesson here is when we get a used engine and we really do not know the condition of the engine anything can come out of the woodwork and sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. When we lose we just have to buck up and fix the problem. I have another engine (a big block Chevrolet 427 that I acquired from a fellow who also acquired it from the fellow who built it and drag raced the engine) Perhaps someday I will use this engine but not before I disassemble it and check it out rather than just install it and then have a problem that could have been resolved.
When you washed the motor bay without motor you got (lots) water in the exhaust pipes 😊
i found head gaskets do that.
Maybe valve seals Dan!! Hope it clears up for ya buddy.
Hey Dan, All she really needs once the hood is on is a bumper sticker that says "Old Enough To Smoke"
I do trust that you will get it sorted out.
"Starts dry stops" i put some lucas on my brake rotors, they are quieter now, thanks😂😂
Valve seals just a guess looks like moisture and burning a bit of oil .... seems like excessively long for it to be just build up of moisture in the exhaust system(was the exhaust system outside with pipe entrances sticking up in a thunderstorm).
@13:57 well, there goes the warrantee! 😂 Nicely done Dan!
keep the amazing content coming such a great team
great work mate
Thank you
For washing your hands
Sweet ride👍
Great show keep up the amazing work be safe my friends God bless all work of art bye Dan go rolling and driving clean
Did Dan just say he wanted it to look better? WTF?! Haha!!
I also say Valve seals as it smokes on deceleration and when it's cold.
Love the nomad. I have enjoyed the Sunday content with your dad. He is a treasure. Nicole I would buy the pattern t shirt you showed. My wife is a real gear head like Dan and she would look good in one. I am also glad you have sizes for larger men.
Probably just moisture...it runs too good ...great video
Machining with Dan, lucus just dilutes additives in your expensive oil
Safety Dan the Safety Man! Lol
Love your content
GOOD JOB!
Yes Sir!!!
Love the channel and always watch all the videos, grinding metal off the new intake with all the ports open and on top of the engine with no air cleaner on the carb is not going to be great for engine life. You seem to be trying to get a lot done lately, look after yourself.
Try a compression test Dan
If i owed this rig i would install a moroso check valve in the exhaust pipe and hook the road draft tube to the check
She is looking good! Dan's fave 🇨🇦
Methinks Dan is losing it - grinding the Edelbrock off of the intake.
That smoking is a little concerning. Hopefully Mur is right!🤞
What a great sounding 327!
Noticed on the last video that the manifold that you love to hate is an Offy. That would be a great manifold for the track. It probably deserves to get a clean and polish and have the mating surfaces machined straight and brought true to 90 degrees. Hoping your right about the smoke otherwise you may be replacing head gaskets or worse.
Keep hearing the ticking of the cameras clock till she's gone
Looks to me like you have a bent or broken broken intake push rod or a collapsed intake lifter if the valve won't open enough it will suck oil past the rings , it was an exhaust valve you would know right away it would start rapidly backfiring through the carburetor.
It's not water in your exhaust. It's the zinc plating on the inside of your muffler. It will wear off.
Check your plugs Dan.
