  • Today we are going for a ride! It's been a few years since this hotrod was out on the open road. Honestly the first test drive went off without a hitch. I couldn't be more happy with the way this car came together. It needs a little tuning here and there, but should be a fun summer cruiser!

I don't. I'm a Chevy guy through and through, but I've never been keen on the Nova. I don't know what it is about them. I'm more into the second gen Chevelles and the 3rd gen Elcaminos. I've owned several Chev muscle cars, never a Nova. Closest I came was a 74 Buick Apollo that my sister gave me. I never would of owned it otherwise.

I bought a Vega from a Drag Racer, no eng/trans. He had a 411 gear set and I built up an eng, 360-sumtin, ported heads, dual spring valves, balanced, blueprinted lower end...ended up just under 500hp. Turned out to be undrivable w/ the 411's. Got a rear end from a neighbor, on trade, w/ 373's. better but, could not pass a gas station! Also, I was buying tires every 3 weeks!! Ended up putting 323 gears in and got some Mickey Thompson's "street legal' skins. With a proper warm up, well and the frame connectors, I could pop wheelies in that thing! I also had the car dyno tuned and had the front end springs chained, limited up travel made the whole car a lever, pushing the rear tires into the ground. I was awesome, as long as it wasn't raining. I have had to park it and call a friend, a few times! Too bad I don't have anymore, would have liked to keep it around to tinker with. Life...maybe someday I will get another to play with?

How about split the difference? Like 3:55 or 3:42? I've ran them all, and 3:55 is still drivable yet fun. I was always a 4:11 guy with Chevy ratio's, till I put a Pontiac/Olds jackpot rear in. Discovered Nirvana for street gears 3:90's with L60 15's was primo. More snap than 3:70, but don't buzz on the beltway like 4:11's. Realisticly if you want to cruise distances though 3:55 is the ticket. Living where y'all do, I'd imagine you need to stretch out to go anywhere! Nova sounds great, but needs some gear! Shame 12 bolts are such a pain to switch gears. How about a Frankland, or a Winters QC? lol Dig deep, the net will contribute. I'm SO envious, that Nova is NICE Dan! But that 3:08 is killin it.

Do you not want even one car you drive out of town in? Here’s a compromise. 373 gears but switch to a 5 speed for highway. Consider a gloss black roof and a new headliner. Overall I love your Nova. Add a big block Nova hood and ditch to cowl induction hood. To me it looks amateurish. I would sell the Cobra and the 47 Chevy. Thanks for hearing me out Dan

  • @geraldscott4302

A "one wheel" is cool??? I think they are one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen. They are on the verge of being outlawed in my state because of all the accidents they cause. I'm an old guy, just turned 65, that still drives and tinkers with hot rods, though I have no plans to build any more. I kept my favorites, and they should last me the rest of my life. Here in Arizona it's 115 degrees F 4-5 months out of the year, too hot for an old guy to work on cars outside, or even drive cars without A/C except at night. At 24:40 I definitely hear a loud ticking sound. I would definitely stick with the 3.08 gears. Anything lower is going to make it undriveable on the highway. I've never had a car that I couldn't comfortably cruise on the highway at 65 mph, other than a couple of dedicated race cars. If you're a drag racer, and never plan to leave town that's different. I don't know about Canada, but where I'm at, fast acceleration can get you a reckless driving violation, even if you never exceeded the speed limit. And in town is a good place to get caught.

If you're not going to take it on a trip put the 3:73's in it or if you put an O/D 5 speed in it by all means put the 3:73's in it. If you're keeping the 4 speed and running a 26"-28" tall tire on it at today's hiway speeds you'll be buzzing the engine and it'll be crap to drive and uncomfortable going anywhere. To bad you don't have a set of 3:54's sitting around, at least that will take some of the edge off.

The car sounds awesome! I think you do need to something with the gears. What about going with something in between the 3.08 & 3.73 or using the 3.73's with a gear vendor or a 5 speed? There are so many options. I also think that when you remove the bar from behind the seats you'll be able to move the seat further back & lean the seatback more to where you aren't sitting so straight up which should make it to where you sit lower in the seat & won't be looking through the top of the windshield plus have more legroom to make it more comfortable! I like the idea of putting the vinyl top on it as long as it's a really good one that's installed correctly & the roof is properly prepped & sealed to help prevent any future rust or damage! I'm looking forward to seeing the future updates as you're able to do them! You can see how much you love this car by the huge smile on your face while you're driving & talking about the car!! I'm happy for you & Dani!! She sounds almost as excited as you do!!😂😂 Have fun & be safe & we'll see you in the next one!!

Depends on the rpm’s you want to run
    Gas mileage 😂
I would like to have it with 373 gears I think
    My Silverado has 411

With the 4 speed keep the 308, Only use the 375 with a 6 speed. Get rid of the roll bar. Is more dangerous unless you drive wearing a helmet.

Sounds Sweet Dan 🏁🚀😎, what kind of fuel are you running and what is your Static Compression?, I could have been hearing things when you got on it maybe a twinge of Detonation maybe. IMO, have fun 😎👋🏼

Never had a Nova I came close once it was a beautiful car then I walked to the other side and it had been in a t bone, today it would have been a not too difficult project but in 1982 for me it would have taken up to much of my time and I didn't know enough and it wasn't a Ford, I was and still am a Ford guy but I've had a lot Chevy's and Mopars as well I'm doing a 68 mustang fastback right now and like you I'm a bigger guy so I will make adjustments to the car for me to drive, I've actually raised it up a little because of my bad back I'm not going to roll out of a lowered car then get up off the ground everytime I go some where

I remain curious about the pulley chatter, (something about a fastener that needed tapping and installed? The noise I also heard, the belt moving about), and also, anymore leaking around that upper rad hose? Nosy minds want to know.

I’d like to see pinky get an LS if it’s getting an engine swap and just make it a good reliable cruiser since it sounds like Dani wants to drive it. Maybe the one out that yellow 56 if it’s any good. 🤷🏼‍♀️

That nova reminds me of my 64 442, powershifts galore! Wish I still had that one! But the stereo in my 2020 is way better!

Love the Nova! What more could you ask for? 3.73’s even on the highway shouldnt be too bad.
Having a few running “keepers” is a good thing, building a few for sale may be a new niche.

The Challenger was a monster that i was denied hearing at full song. I bet that unit screamed. Same with the Nomad. I want to hear this Nova SBC at full song from a holeshot with the skinny pedal firmly in contact with floor thru all the gears till it hits 6500 rpms in 4th gear. Can you do this in a video we can see? Fear not the skinny pedal!

Just swap the rear already. Because let's face it, that's what both you and that engine/trans wants. And if/when you ever decide that you're going to put a real roadtrip on her, or the 4 speed needs some attention, you'll probably just do a TKX swap, and the shorter rear gear will just make all the more sense anyway.

Gotta be a T56 in your future. I have 4.10’s in my 2004 Vette and it cruises fine with the T56 ratios.

A real nice compromise between the 3:08's & the 3:73's for the rear gears is the often overlooked 3:55's. Jus sayin 👀 🤠
