I am a super casual when it comes to FPS games and I love DOOM Eternal. I bought the game day 1 and also felt that sense of being overwhelmed by all the fighting mechanics and emphasis on resource management. Though I didn't feel the game was too hard, it definitely intimidated this gamer that spends most of his time in sandboxes or RPGs. I would just occasionally play the first few levels over and over to get my fix of bloody demon slaying and that's all I ever wanted from the game. I approach my games differently than a lot of gamers. I like to take my time, so that's how I approached DOOM Eternal. Over this last year I watched videos of people ragging on the Marauders and it put me off on pushing through the main campaign, figuring I would have to get real GUD to beat this game without cheats even on easy mode.
Then I started watching your videos and any others I could find that didn't sound like a b*tch session about the game, and it reignited my interest in the game. I'm having a blast learning how to meat hook better and just get better at the DOOM dance in general. I'm still at the "Supershotgun/Ballista" or "Supershotgun/Rocket" combo level of game play, but that's enough for this low-tier player to wreck a Marauder when I get him in my sights. Thanks for all the pointers, Mayo! Keep up the good work!

I remember the first time i watched this video. I had bought Eternal at a steam sale earlier this year and played non-stop for about 2 days. After that, i decided to check some videos and gameplays to see other people's opinions on this game, and i eventually found your channel. Not only did this introduce me to the amazing community this franchise as a whole has, but also kinda make me love the game more?
It made me want to replay the levels many times and experiment with all of the tools at my disposal, and eventually found my preferred playstyle, staying on the air, constantly meathooking and pretty much bombing hordes with anything explosive at my disposal. Once i got that figured out, i decided to go from exclusively playing Hurt me plenty/UV to trying out Nightmare.
Now i have around 375 hours spent and i continue to find new ways to enjoy it.
What i'm trying to say is, your videos are a blessing for new players trying to understand this game's mechanics and intricacies. They made me be more confindent in my style and ways to handle arenas and big fights, and to just appreciate everything the game has to offer, so thanks a lot for that!
We don't have the time to experiment with different playstyles, because the longer the Icon of Sin is on Earth, the stronger it becomes.
Excellent stuff - like many people I have dedicated a serious portion of my life to this game since it came out. The truly glorious part about it is (as Mayo demonstrates perfectly) that you can change it up as much or as little as you please - playing with those mods that we are all dismissed when the game came out has breathed new life into it for me. Mayo once said that game developers rarely care this much about the player experience and the depth of thought and planning but into Doom Eternal is mind-blowing, truly people who clearly love what they do.
Kudos to Mayo also for his detailed , but entertaining Doom videos, he's definitely inspired me to try a few different strategies - they don't always work but hell, that just makes it all the more fun. The level of dedication to your craft is above and beyond dude, please don't stop okay?😎👍

Its really good against a doomhunter it destroys their sled fast with their shield up and u dont have to aim that well to use it, really good if u out of bloodpunch.

Yeah it seems pretty generic. I see a lot more people using Destroyer Blade now. I am a lock on burst worshipper, although I initially tried remote detonation. Rem det feels more like a niche mod for mod.
I think my playstyle is like a hybrid (ish) of speedrunner and medium level player. I do try to find trigger enemies whenever possible and use some speedrunner strategies for early levels (chainsawing early heavies like in the Mancubus pit or Arachnotrons on hell on earth) and break off into normal play once we're past that. I will intentionally not use the Chainsaw in some arenas so I can easily get a chainsaw on a heavy demon for most of early game (thanks Decino). It helps a lot and fits my playstyle very well.

Still to this day I play Eternal consistently, and still to this day, people give me shit about not playing on nightmare, or not being "good" at the game. When it's your world, you can play the way you want. It doesn't matter what people think. Thank you, Mayo.

I used to write off the destroyer blade, but your experimental style encouraged me to try and change things up and I figured out the ice bomb and destroyer blade on a weakened super heavy demon usually eliminates them or gets them close enough to death where I can finish them off. I’m glad you made this video encouraging players to play their own way and not emulate what others are doing, because this game allows a lot of creativity and room for different playstyles and players need to realize to have fun in the ways they like the most and start experimenting.
This vid was very reflective to nerdslayer's "The curse of Meta in MMORPG" video about Elitism and Metagame especially in general. I absolutely already agreed about it too, Playstyle will still always matter more than Build Kitting in the world of action-based video game
I find the microwave beam is useful against single target threats. If there is only one tyrant or baron left and some fodder, you can microwave it with little worry about being killed.
Can we talk about how clockner made use of his entire arsenal back in doom 2016 and looked absolutely epic
I was stuck on The Holt for weeks. Could not get past the part with two Tyrants (one possessed). Then I watched this video. The problem was, I was trying to imitate the play style of a speed runner. Switching my weapons and mods, particularly the charge beam on the plasma rifle, I beat the encounter on the second try.
Let me tell you that, even if I subscribed earlier to your channel thanks to some very useful tutorial videos of yours, this video is the one that not only proves that I was right, but also encourages me more on keep trying more of Doom Eternal, even on HMP, a difficulty mode I was already asuming that was not for me.
Thank you for your last tip. It makes me feel more comfortable with this game now.
My biggest personal problem while playing Eternal, was stressing about not taking damage. This, combined with the fact that I only play with controller, influenced me to resign to using mainly 2 weapons, instead of utilizing other weapons and mods that might actually be useful in different situations. I only brought out the Sticky Bomb to stagger Cacodemons, and I only brought out the Arbalest to deal max damage to Pain Elementals.
When I start my next playthrough, I will try to prioritize staying on the move and evading damage, so that I switch to alternate weapons that might be more optimal in different situations. Granted, this will be much more possible to do in the DLCs, because in those, every upgrade will be available at the start. Still, I will try to adopt a more relaxed playstyle during the main campaign as well.
As a huge fan of the Full Auto, Destroyer Blade and Precision bolt, I gotta say I love your commentary.
My preferred style is basically to dump all of each type of ammo without quickswapping, and using the ice+flamethrower+grenade combo to top myself off for health and armor.
You're on the ball here! I found myself all the "lame mods" to a far greater extent in TAG than I ever thought to in the base game.
The Destroyer Blade is my favorite weapon mod in the game. I don't get to use it often, but when I do, the gory splatter from that hot wave cutting through a horde is my shit.
I was feeling myself as good player and was preparing for UN run. Then I watched top players/speedrunners and their crazy PB-RL combo. I was fine with my PB-Ballista for long range, and SS-Ballista for melee range. But I started to learn PB-RL. Now everything is messed up in my mind. I am constantly finding myself pressing random weapons without any combos. Who knows how much hours I need to play more to feel confident again.
You have eloquently described something that is very difficult to put into words for many players of this game, even reviewers didn't bother trying to think about this. Instead they do what reviewers do and pick minor disagreements and use them as low hanging fruit to save a very well designed game from getting a better recommendation. Thanks Mayo, Hugo and yourself could chat endlessly about the game design philosophy of both this game, Doom 2016 and future expansions/games and it would be a treat.
I could probably spend an entire day with him talking game design and doom and movies and STILL have more to discuss.

Honestly, my favorite way to deal with a whiplash doesn't even use mods. Just use a rocket, grenade, rocket combo.
I was using Micro Missiles through entire fight with Icon of Sin on my UN run, along with Shield mod for Chaingun. These two were my lifesavers, especially the shield. Firstly I was hardly against the Shield mod, because I was used to Mobile Turret from 2016, but in Eternal I found it a bit useless, so I gave a try to Shield and now I can't imagine my playthrough without it.
I must say I love your opinion on not relying on meta but on what suits and feels comfortable for you..... I think this can be applied to every competitive game

That's a problem I kept on getting through when I play other games, it's like I'm obligated to use the same weapons and tactics over and over or I will be in a massive disadvantage. Especially in halo, although I like the aesthetic, I don't like the fact that I had to either use the battle rifle and peek corners or get destroyed by people using the same strategy.
My play style usually goes like "Yeah, take this demon punk! That's ri-.. oh no my health is 5 WHERE ARE THE DAMN HEALTH PACKS AND ZOMBIES HELP WHY IS MY DASH RECHARGING SO SLOW" but I'm getting pretty comfortable in that play style!

That’s I made my ultra nightmare “guide” I’m no fast swapper or comboer, not my style or fun.
I prefer micromissile over PB because I love playing with no HUD at all , no crosshair and classic weapon pose, just as simple as that..
i feel ok about using the microwave beam in my 1st run thru. also precision shot over micro missiles and the shield over the turret mode on the chain gun. that shield was great when a marauder was just getting irritating. no one liked them at first...
The Spicy Demons Battlemode community and some of its players (Tomatrix and the Destroyer Blade mod) have been showcasing some of these underrated weapon mods since the start of the games lifespan. I think it’s important to say that, and I’m not trying to sound like I know more. (You know that’s not my intention ❤️)

I kind of like precision bolt/ballista quick swaps personally because you can strip weak points off and it makes me have to aim more carefully
Chain gun main. Right here that's all I need. Just wish I could have 500 rounds or 300 and not share with heavy cannon. They both obviously have different bullets
Ngl when I first saw people doing those crazy weapon combos I thought maybe this game is not for me bc people made it look like some kind of game only people on mlg is capable to deal with, that not even in normal could be playable for me, I don't suck at fps but these people really overwhelmed me

I loved the microwave beam since the beginning. I'm decent at the game too. I can play on Nightmare and die only a few times. I play on console though so my experience is probably different than others.
For my experience. I say The Micro Missiles Is a Better mod for me, and i know Alot More people Prefer the Precision Bolt, but Just like the Remote-Detonation It can actually serve a good source of use. Although of course. I still use the Precision Bolt with it.
The fighting game analogies were all too accurate, people in the FGC could really use a lot of the words in this video too
I agree wholeheartedly with the general sentiment that different mods are tailored to different playstyles, and that people should use what compliments their style. I really dislike the idea of just following along and using what's "best," however, it has to be said that some mods are used less than others not because of snobbish elitism, but rather due to straight up mechanical issues. Microwave beam is a great mod and I envoy using it, but I straight up don't use vanilla microwave beam because sadly it's completely unreliable. Half the time it can't find a target right in front of me, and the other half the time it breaks randomly for no discernable reason. Whatever enjoyment I would have gotten from using the mod in a clutch, stylish, and personal way is replaced with anger for it not functioning mechanically on the most basic of levels. Similarly, some fodder enemies at random points in the base game are completely and entirely immune to remote detonation damage (I unloaded 10 into 3 zombies in ARC complex one time, no joke, and sadly this isn't even a rare occurrence). A big component to using a mod like remote det is getting a faulter, but Hell Knights for instance are known to only faulter when it suits them. I think a big part of the meta isn't just using "the best" weapons and mods, but using the weapons and mods that most often work as advertised and can be relied on. The longer you play the game, the more you start to know how things should behave, and the more you start to notice when they don't behave the way they're supposed to. That's why I think people with high play times tend to gravitate towards the meta weapons. It's not only because they're "better," it's because they work, which sadly isn't the case across the board.
Note: this isn't the case for every unused mod, but there's a direct correlation I think with how reliable a mod is and how often its utilized. And yes, I do realize that lock on burst is just as unreliable with what it locks onto as remote det, but that's why people just PB rocket now.
How does the microwave beam break? I've never had that happen to me personally, though I can sorta relate to the difficulties of aiming it at groups of enemies. But really, it's best to just either briefly stunlock big guys, or focus on little guys with it. Not sure what to say about remote detonation either, other than maybe the blast radius is deceptively small (they did say that the large part that falters does no damage, after all, and can make it seem much bigger than it actually is). I've put in nearly 300 hours myself, and haven't had either mod glitch out on me.
I honestly didn't know that the destroyer blade was being crapped on. It's been part of my arsenal since doom eternal came out. Filthy casual here lol.

I almost exclusively use SSG and minigun mobile turret and beat Super Gore Nest on Nightmare faster than someone who played meta, I also am a crack addict.

Yes . But the fact is the level designers adapted the dlcs and mastery levels to pro players. For instance by creating maps where you always need to stay in the air forcing you to be effective with super shotgun balista combo. The fact weapon swap cancelling animation is now in loading screens indicates they recommend players to use weapon swaps. It's just un advice but I felt I had to watch pro-player in order to defeat mastery level. I can't get pass through the small room at the end of Taras Nabad when the Totem spawns by playing doom-dance

Mayo, my g, have you played Star Wars: Bounty Hunter? It's not like Doom Eternal in a superficial way, and it's a bit aged, but I was playing it on ps4 some time ago and I couldn't help but think that it would be interesting to get to know your opinion about it, it's definitely a challenge and it has a LOT of combat and platforming, also it's a retro game with some nice, intrincate map designs.
I haven't. Never paid much attention to star wars. But I'm open to trying anything.
One question about the flame thrower. Do you know how to tell the distance or reach the flamethrower will hit an enemy? This one question might be a video self when you think about it.
You just get a feel for it. Its like super shotgun range.
Just curious, how is SSG+PB stronger than SSG+Ballista at close range? Does it switch faster?
I believe so. It's either that or it's the fact that it typically gets a lotta bonus damage on specific spots (particularly the head) that does it. It's much tougher to pull off as a result, but is likely quite rewarding if your aim is great.
I've been experimenting with more combos. Which honestly, has made me experiment more in other games.
There's no one way to play, and I love that.
Don't worry about elitists, man. We get a lot of them in the Fallout 76 community (Bloodied build elitists are the worst, especially to players like me who are more specifically into combo styles and legendaries)
Kabal is my MK main because speed and throws are my particular style in that game.

yeah totally. when someone says i suck, i just cry and stop playing. there is no way i can use that to push and get better. everyone should be like unicorns and rainbows and blow each other.
One of the most important lessons I learned is that there is no such thing as a useless mod.
Following most of your tips on Doom Eternal lead me to accomplish something I didn't even know I could do : finish Doom 2016, Doom Eternal and the fucking DLC in nightmare difficulties. You would have asked me just a few month ago and I would have say "nah, nightmare is too hard for me, I just want some fun", but now I got gud, so gud in fact that I'm having fun ONLY in nightmare difficulty now! It's very rewarding to see how my gameplay got very intense and funnier than before simply by mastering the quick swapping weapons and have a real use of my whole arsenal, something I thought was just completely out of my league!

That same thing happened to me! But with allstin because he made a video that was encouraging low players to challenge them selves and I went to nightmare and I made a slaughterhouse it was amazing and now I have done the super gore nest master level on ultra nightmare well now I do it for fun because the lack of master levels but the game is fun and I’ll get the dlc soon and I’ll do the dlc on ultra nightmare wish me luck! And good luck with your ultra nightmare stuff it’s gonna be hard.
Same here. Still don't have the gumption for Ultra Nightmare on PS4, but I am much closer! This channel and Cynic The Original have really helped me love these games all the more, as well as the confidence to play, and win, on Nightmare.

Grenades/Ice Bomb+charged-up Destroyer Blade is the best way to deal with the cloaked Whiplashes.
I swear, this mod is addictive once you know how to use it.

On the subject of wepon mods if you use the equipment fiend rune and miss your flame belch if you have the flaming meat hook it will count as a kill with the flame belch and will help recharge it

I'm surprised more people don't use equipment fiend, I literally have never taken it off, I like spamming equipment and always having something ready other than guns
When you pair Ice Bomb, Flame Belch, a crowd of demons and Destroyer Blade, it's better than a glory kill

I like how most people are talking about like oh this and that like this weapon combo and this mod combo is the best but No one is talking about Mod switching mid combat are use it a lot and to be honest it save my skin many many times
I'm currently doing an unfavored mods run to better acclimate myself to things like Micro Missiles and the Energy Shield (also Ice Bomb only cuz I prefer Frags), and when I'm done with that I'm gonna hone my mod switching and grenade toggling until I'm using all my possible options at any given moment.
Moral of the story: Doom Eternal has a place for pretty much everyone, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise

I'd love mayo to spend a bit of time playing eternal on console and then give us his thoughts on viable strategies/weapon combos. I'm sure plenty of mayo/console fans would love that!
Well you can do basically any combos he already listed just not as fast. Hes done videos on micromissiles, full auto.. those work well on controller because they don’t require fast switching or precision aim
Console is not too different from PC, just a teeny bit slower. You can still quickswap but it isn't as fast as you'd have to open the wheel for a split second to go to the next weapon, but its still possible.
@@ringo7395 Yes but that costs your accuracy, since you use the analog stick you aim with to choose what weapon you want. On mouse and keyboard, all the weapons can be bound to whatever key you want, and whilst you are switching weapons, you still have full control over aim with the mouse. It is far more viable to just do ballista/ssg, pb/rocket and ballista/pb on console, rather than going ballista/pb/rocket, since that would require using the wheel to switch weapons.
As a pc player who tried a campaign using a gamepad, basically any sustained-fire mod is great--Full Auto, Micro Missiles, Mobile Turret. Hell, you don't even need to quickswap to kill things well. You can stay on SSG or rocket launcher for several seconds and kill them just fine.
Oh, and Microwave Beam is always great to hold a problematic enemy in place with to let you get your bearings.
It's a sad reality that whenever a new game with a high skill ceiling comes along, there will be plenty of elitists who will only, and ONLY want everyone to play in only the most efficient and meta way possible.
And videogames aren't the only thing that suffer from elitists sadly. :/

I don't know how the destroyer blade went under the radar for so many. You have to charge arbalest as well, and destroyer blade is like a miniature BFG shot.
Too slow. Many players are at a high state of panic for a lack of a better word. Standing still or not being able to move around as fast as possible is nerve racking which is why I seldom use it myself.
@@alastor8091 that’s why it’s best to charge it when you’re in mid air or using a jump pad
Once mastered, Arbalest lets you skip the charge up time after the first shot if you hit your target, that contributed a lot to its popularity.
@@Demonstormlord do you use it for anything other than fliers? Honestly can't tell if the charge time is worth it against anything that's not a meatball and I like Pain Elementals so I like to fight them for a little longer than 3 Arbalest shots.
@@alastor8091 I'm not very good, but some people used it against Marauders for more damaging combos. I also used it a lot in battle mode.
