This is a misconception, the tree wasn't cut down to see how old it was. It was accidentally killed in the process of collecting a core sample, then cut down after it was already dead. It also isn't really the oldest tree, the real oldest tree is purposely hidden from the public.

The Nickelodeon time capsule was buried in front of Nickelodeon Studios (now a Blue Man Group attraction) in Orlando, Florida in 1992, to be opened in 2042. The time capsule was relocated to the front entrance of the Nickelodeon Family Suites (later known as Nickelodeon Suites resort, now the Holiday Inn Waterpark Hotel). The time capsule is being relocated to a new Nickelodeon Animation/TV Studio in Burbank, California, but it is still scheduled to be opened in 2042. The Nickelodeon time capsule is one known case of a time capsule being transplanted to a new location twice after two different attractions with the Nickelodeon branding shut down. I really hope that when that time capsule gets buried in California, it stays buried until 2042.

I wondered what happened to the Nickelodeon resort. We stayed at it twice and both times we had average experiences. The ps2s in the rooms were broken, the water areas were overcrowded, and the place was really out dated. They showed nick GUTS on the TVs and had pictures of nick shows that didn’t exist anymore like rocket power and rug rats.
When I was 8, I made an end of the world capsule and buried a ziplock bag full of Pokemon cards and a Creed CD in my back yard.

I buried a time capsule at a house I grew up in once. 8 years later I came back to that house after moving from state to state over the years. I jumped out of my car and ran to the back yard of my old home which I was actually trespassing on (dont own it anymore) I removed the tiles on the porch and dug with my bare hands to only find the remnants of my child hood and pieces of plastic zip lock layers I used. Most of the contents I couldnt find but I found a rotten piece of paper with horribly illegible handwriting amongst the remains. I then remembered I was writing to my future self, I didnt realize how much I had grown since but I could see my past self being happy that the silly idea of putting random belongings and papers was a good idea. I for some reason put items that most 12 year old kids liked, like beyblades and yugioh/pokemon cards and other random things I thought were cool. It was a nostalgic moment for me, i was so excited to go back to that little moment in time i had.

The whole idea of a time capsule is kinda cool. About 5 years ago, I found one I made for a school project when I was 7 or 8. Kinda cool, because no one remembered what was in it. It's a fun project to do with your kids, I wish more families would do it!

My sophomore year of high school, my English teacher had us all write letters to ourselves and she mailed them to us 10 years later. I had completely forgotten about it and was confused to see the handwriting. That teacher has remained my best friend since the year I wrote it but she never brought it up. The correct reaction to finding a time capsule that says "don't open until 2957" is to make another, new time capsule (2015) and put it in right next to the other one without ever opening it.
When I was a little kid, before the Apollo moon landings, McDonald’s gave out these solar system posters with maps and drawings showing how the Saturn/Apollo rockets would carry men to the moon. My dad hid one in the wall of our basement when he was finishing it. I hope it’s still there.

Remember, most (all?) time capsules predate the internet era(is anyone laying cornerstone time capsules these days?),So, back then, it was a way to communicate with future generations. Now, time capsules seem superfluous with the digital storage we have. I hope they're still happening; nothin' like acually holding in your hand...right? And they're kind of snapshots of that exact time.

What if at some point in time MIT invented a time machine and the contents of that capsule were only intended to be seen on 2957 for the sake of humanity and the defense of the timeline. That would have been a pretty big mistake if you messed that up MIT. You should trust your own labeling.
