I grew up a 20 minute drive from the prison used for filming it (the old Ohio State Reformatory.) You can't imagine how many times I've seen this film
I spent more than 6 years locked up and I can tell you that it was scary coming back to the real world even after that amount of time. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be released after 50 years like Brooks. That part of the movie really hits me hard.
Same here. I did 6 years and it was a very scary deal the day I was released and had to re-adjust to normal life again.

And this film represents this perfectly and I’m so glad you ladies saw that. Your friendship is so beautiful to see.
Shawshank changed what I thought a good story means. The pain, suffering, triumph and hope was so underplayed and natural. As a teen Red and Andy were one of my favorite duos.
I love the fact that Andy hidden the stone hammer at "Exodus" chapter on his Bible.

Very little accidental about this movie. The scripture they each quote is symbolic "Watch ye therefore for ye know not when the master of the house cometh", and if course "I am the light of the world", perfect for the corrupt warden's messiah complex. Lol. Also note the song the warden whistles: "A mighty fortress is our God".

I had the very great fortune to meet Bob Gunton (Warden Norton) at a Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. He is one of the nicest celebrities I’ve ever met, and he’s so patient and happy to speak with everyone who approaches him.
He signed the picture I brought for him to autograph:

The Brook's scene, gets me every time. I feel so bad for him, his life became those and our world his new prison, and his only escape... heart breaking
The entire movie is an emotional rollercoaster, happiness, joy, shock, disappear, anger and finally justice. I might not consider it the best movie ever, but it's definitely up there in my books with the best and is always an experience to watch. Your heart felt response at the end, was heart warming. I totally agree with your thoughts on prison, it should be a place of rehabilitation.

Small subliminal thing, but camera was placed looking into prison when Brooks was released. The camera was pointing outward when Red was released representing hope. Make a difference? Probably.
I never picked up on that.
With most films I'd put it down to a happy coincidence. For this one it's almost certainly deliberate. They wer in the zone.
The "we're reel'n 'em in" guy is Morgan Freeman's son. He also provides Red's parole photo. BTW, Andy's take from the warden adjusted for inflation is more than $3.1 million.
I knew about Morgan's son in the photo but I didn't know about the other part. How cool!
Red accepted what he'd done to be sent to prison "only guilty man in Shawshank". His parole hearings were just something he went through, knowing that he wasn't going to get out as he deserved to be there... until Andy gave him hope and true friendship, and when Andy left it was like hope went with him, so Red no longer cared about playing the games, spoke from his heart, showed that he had/was suffering, and (with the chance in the times, shown by the change of the makeup of the parole board...with it being the 60s and the board being made up of young educated men and women) it was a time when speaking his mind was goong to be more accepted. His arc all came together because of the friendship from Andy, he accepted his sentence, took his suffering because of what he'd done, treated his parole hearings with contempt as he accepted his guilt, and then when HIS redemption was brought about by Andy he realised that he had reached the end of his penance.
That prison was The Mansfield State Reformatory, about a half hour from my home. The bank near the end was in my hometown. The huge oak tree is no longer there, sadly. It was hit by lightning several years ago.
Hey Gals, I am sorry you took the death of Brooks so hard. It breaks even the toughest of us.
You were crying even before he took his life at his loneliness and despair.
The Shawshank Redemption has to be one of the most intense and satisfying movies to watch. It's Emotional as hell, but you’ve got a smile on your face at the end.
Mich crying at the ending (40:30) and Lia and Ellie hugging her was soooooooo cute. Sooooooo very rarely do I see Michelle crying or showing such emotion. Love your reactions, Homies. It is one of the best movies ever and absolutely love it :)
Fun fact (very sad actually): in the book, Andy found Jake dead in the library after Brook left
Also Red has not reached the place where Andy might be waiting, so we never learn if Red gets there or if Andy is even there. The time span was 10 years I believe between the escape and Red's release.
Hats off to Stephen King and director Frank Darabont for this masterpiece! "The Green Mile" being another one. Just as good as it gets! Period.
Andy got 2 weeks in "the hole" (solitary confinement) for playing Mozart over the prison PA. Bogs and his group beat Andy to near death and he got 1 week.
They got them out early so the real punishment could begin.
Having been in a prison, I can tell you that defying authority is considered a worse crime than murder. You can do whatever you want, just don't make the guards do their jobs or you'll pay for it.
Boggs definitely got the hard end of that stick in the end. I'd rather stay in the hole another month.

Still a wonderful, uplifting movie after all this time, that gives you Hope. Looks like it has the same effect on the next generation. That's nice to know.
Imagine crawling through a long narrow pipe, not being able to back up, not knowing where the end was or if it was openable.
If you try to apply to become a firefighter you have to go through that, it's a test to see if you have claustrophobia which is an immediate cause for rejection in the firefighter profession.

This is the most perfectly cast movie in the history of casting movies. Change any character and it's not a masterpiece. Frank Darabont is a freaking genius.
"How did he teach his friends the different types of rocks?" Well...He did run a library for about 12 years...
Which is also how Andy was able to explain the tree in the hay-field as "something out of a Robert frost poem", to Red.

These movie reactions are brilliant. Probably my all time favorite movie and watching your faces express the emotions I felt the first time I watched it (and that was about 30 viewings ago). The world is a better place because we all have the privilege of getting to know the Homies. I absolutely adore you all!
A beautiful reaction. It's always something special to watch others enjoy a movie so beloved by so many people. Now you have to show them "The Green Mile" (1999). Another great movie that makes you feel so many emotions.
Shawshank was Nelson Mandela's favorite movie. I've had friends that did time, but hard time, especially for years, can't imagine. If you liked the friendship theme, then, at least for the holidays, you should react to the old holiday season classic, "It's a Wonderful Life." It was starring actor Stewart's first acting job after WW2. Stewart struggled with PTSD from the war and though most thought his career was over, Capra was willing to take a chance on him. A great message in Wonderful Life, similar to Shawshank.
Nobody thought Jimmy Stewart's career was over--he personally felt like he couldn't do something that felt as frivolous as acting after going through what he did. Capra and his costar Lionel Barrymore convinced him to give the role a try, and he said in later years he was glad he did.

The biggest thing i learned watching this movie is that prisoners are people too. It's easy to forget or ignore people them and that they should be treated as human and not as animal in cages. They aren't all evil or sometimes even guilty. Prisoners have people they care about and people that care about them too. This movie really opened my eyes and i hope it did the same for other people too.
Facts! I've had family members do serious time they're still people and most still deserve dignity. Granted there are some that deserve to be buried under the prison but the majority are still someone's son, husband, and father.
That’s great but… it’s really scary that you thought that before and needed to learn different. How many other people out there are the same? I learned at around 11, I remember bc I saw a homeless guy smoking a cigarette and it gave me this… mental conflict 😅 it scares me that there are adults out there that think prisoners equal bad. 😢
@@rosemadder5547 i think a lot of us are brought up that way, "only bad people go to prison and so they deserve what they get". I mean i admit it's awful but unfortunately we operate under a lot of assumptions in general: the legal system will get it right, prisons take care of the prisoners, and innocent people won't be charged for crimes they didn't commit. I lived in that happy little bubble until i started college but some people spend their whole lives in it, never wanting to see the truth.
One of the most powerful things that goes without being said is that Andy gave up drinking after being drunk the night his wife died.
It wasn't him, but he seemed to have thought about it and clearly decided drinking was no longer for him.
Best movie, and should be a constant reminder to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that they don't know shit about films.
That's a choice they made for the film. In the novella he still drinks, albeit in a much more limited amount. Just four drinks each year according to Red. Saves up for a bottle of Jack Daniels for his birthday, and another for Christmas/New Years. Your point still holds though since after two drinks from each bottle, he gives the rest to Red and the boys.
This may have been pointed out already, but the first time Andy mentions hope to Red, Red calls it a "shitty pipe dream", and sure enough Andy escapes to his hopeful ending through a shitty pipe.

The movie Shawshank Redemption is dedicated to actor/writer Allen Greene. The film is about a former agent of Frank Darabont, who died from AIDS complications before it was finished. Though Allen Greene was a friend and ally to Darabont, he died before the film could be released. This movie is Greene’s last film, and he is remembered as a great actor and filmmaker.
It really hurt when Brookes killed himself he could have opened a book store and called it Brooks books and in the back he had a little wild Garden where are all the birds came.
To do that he would have had to gotten a loan and what bank would give an ex con a loan. Besides, I doubt he would even know how to start something like that. Don't get me wrong, that would have been a great happy ending for the character and I agree I would have loved to see that happen in this movie.
Interestingly Brookes was not in the Steven King short story this movie was based on and Tommy didn't get killed in King's story either.

Best movie I had ever seen way before I even knew there were official rankings on the internet. I just knew it had to be up there, you can tell with certain movies. The first time I learned it was the highest rated movie in the world it was a cool feeling knowing beforehand that I had possibly seen the best movie ever and then get confirmation that it was :)
That’s the thing about the film, the redemption is not Andy’s, Andy never needed to be redeemed cause he never did the crime he went down for
the redemption is Red’s and the other prisoners whose lives were made better and given hope by Andy
Red’s redemption is coming to terms with his crime and who is he as well as regaining the hope that he lost, which is thanks to his friendship with Andy.
This movie changed me. It shows the demonic and the angelic of humanity so starkly, so purely, so sharply, it pulls the emotion straight out. Brooks. Oh, God, I cry every time.
This really is one of the best movies ever made. I saw it in the theaters...it isn't my style but somehow I was drawn to it. And it has been one of my favorites ever since.

A little fun fact about this movie I didn't learn until I recently looked up the cast, the guard captain is Clancy Brown, the voice of Mr. Krabs and Hank in Detroit: Become Human
Fun fact this movie was almost entirely in Mansfield Ohio, just a couple of hours from where I live. You can tour the prison, the wardens office is there, the safe is even still on the wall. The park bench where Brooks fed the pigeons.... Homies get over here!! Lol
I watched this film all the way through when I was around 13/14 years old. Always loved and studied movies and this film truly ignited the spark.
One of the greatest endings to a film I’ve ever seen
The parole board is every ten years, not every week. Has anyone else ever noticed how the board members changes over the years as well as how they speak to Red? First it's all white men and they say "Sit." Like to a dog. But the last one they say "Please sit down." and there's women on the board? I love how it suggests the passage of time as far as civil rights and all that. Very cool.

The young picture of Red in the movie is actually a picture of the actor who played him, Morgan Freeman’s son since they looked so similar. This movie was actually filmed in a real prison just a few hours away from me in Mansfield, Ohio. They shut the prison down the year before they started filming this movie and they actually left some well behaved prisoners to stay behind as extras and I actually had a family member who was an extra in the movie. The $370,000 he stole from the warden adjusted for inflation today would be just over $3,158,000; that’s just over a 753% increase.
When Red tells Andy that thinking about going to Zihuatanejo, he tells him it's shitty pipe dreams. It foreshadows Andy crawling through a shitty pipe to escape.
I often imagine how it would have gone if they had moved him to a different cell or found his tunnel. "Oh that? That's nothing. That was there when I moved in."
"And it wasn't a love story." Yes it was. Love of hope. Love of freedom. Love of Life.
Interesting story about the prison, the prison is located a little ways out from Columbus, OH it was retired from service in the 80s. It was also used in Air Force One to represent a Russian prison. Its pretty down in repairs and purely serves as historical and a Hollywood landmark. Various spots throughout the prison are set up to commemorate those parts.

I love to see the reactions of various people to this movie. My wife and I saw it on video about 25 years ago (it was VHS tapes those days) and we had a similar reaction. Since that time, when I surf the channels, if Shawshank is running on any channel, I stay with it until the end. I love to say that I have seen the beginning of this movie about a few dozen times but have seen the ending a few hundred times!
This is one of my movies that I've almost completely stopped watching the full thing because I can watch reactions and get that experience with new folx each time. I think aside from Hamilton, this is the movie I have paid to join folx' Patreon so I could watch along the most times for.

Norway has the best recidivism rate in the world, meaning those that are released don't commit crimes again. Their system also treats people in their prison system more humanly than others. I'd agree breaking someone down isn't the way to reform them. Except for the most extreme cases you are going to have them in society again, you need to increase their humanity not decrease it.
"So beautiful." Yes, thank you. I live near both the prison and the tree (it's not there anymore, sadly) and people give Ohio a lot of crap, thinking it's all cornfields. But we've got the Appalachian mountains to the southeast and fields and forests and rivers and streams. I've been all over the world and I still came back to Ohio.

The parole hearing you get when serving a whole life sentence isn’t every week. It’s once every 10 years. That was his second rejection meaning it was his 20 year parole hearing.
Who Red? That was his 40th year at the end. First we saw at the beginning was 20 years, second was 30 years, and last was 40.

It is Morgan Freemans voice. I know people always mention his voice. There is a reason. The strength and the braking. ❤ Also Tim Robbins is so undervalued as an actor. Hell, everyone in this movie were brilliant.

This movie is the reason one of my biggest fears is the fear of being wrongfully convicted of a crime and going to prison for it.
This was an adaption of a Stephen King short story. The movie, when it was released, didn't do well and only became popular when released to video.
my absolute favorite movie of all time, this and Green Mile are top tier. I like how Andy was the one man who changed the Shawshank prison for the better to help cure it of it's flaws
Friends can be much better than family. Family you have no choice who they are. They might be awful. You choose your friends, or rather you choose each other. It's often better than family.
