One detail I love is when Brookes is released, the view is of the prison, symbolizing his life was behind him. But when Red is released, it’s the opposite, instead it shows his journey forward… Symbolisms.

Didn't see that. Nice eye. I noticed a long while back that when he's released he's dressed like he's going to a funeral.
One symbolism I love is Brooks dangling. I'm not certain but I think that symbolizes he's dead.

I love how Red hated the idea of hope but at the end, he said "I hope to see my friend, I hope the ocean is blue, I HOPE". Just a beautiful way to end the movie.
That was how the film originally supposed to end but it didn't go down well with test screenings so they add the beach bit

@@dannyadams4765 The whole movie didn’t do great so they decided to tie it off and make the end definitive rather than leave it open-ended for a sequel, which is what they should have done instead. Imagine a sequel simply called Red, which follows a parolee as he travels across the USA in 1966 after 40 years in prison.
They also play Harmonica music when he is looking for the rock. Harmonica = hope
That's the point of the film. The Shawshank "Redemption" is about Red's redemption. People think the movie is about Andy, but it's not. Andy never changes. He's always full of hope. Red is the one who is changed by Andy and begins to hope. He's the redempted one. That's why the last words of the film are "I hope...", spoken by Red.

I tend to think Jake was probably looking for Brooks but he was scared to leave the area around the prison where he lived his whole life. He probably went looking for him but since Brooks traveled so far away, Jake just never had the inclination to fly far enough away to find him.
Hannah's emotional reactions to this film, were truly heartfelt and endearing.
I kind of wish Ash sat this one out and it was just her

Watching Hannah be so happy about Brooks' parole killed me since I knew what was coming. Hannah, you're too pure for this world
Man, when Hannah connected with Brooks immediately, I knew it would devastate her. She had me crying as much as when I first saw it.
This is easily my favorite film. For once I agree with Ash's facts; it doesn't get any better than this.

Hannah picked up on the fact that Andy had to go back to the tree to stash the note and money AFTER he escaped. I wonder how amazed she’ll be when she stops and thinks about the timeline around Tommy realizing when Andy was tossed in solitary and Tommy was shot, the hole was already completed. Andy stayed in prison-hole completed-on purpose to “redeem” Tommy. He left only after that was thwarted by Norton.
I like the idea of that but do we really know that from the film? How do we know he didn't just complete the hole later.?
@@JO-qd2bv It’s the film that tells us. Consider what we saw about the length of the tunnel. That took 20 years… now stick a thumbtack in that for a minute. Let’s now go back to when Tommy describes Blatch. At the minimum, the great vast majority of the tunnel must have been complete. Andy rushes to the Warden… ends up in solitary (no digging). Tommy is shot. Andy left in solitary for another 30 days (no digging). Andy out and back in the yard (Red is coming up to him as if this is the first seeing him in 60 days). Buxton instructions. Some time passes but you’re to infer it isn’t a GREAT amount of time because Red is worried (based on the Buxton instructions convo). Andy has rope now. The movie shows us Andy moving through a completed hole, rope around leg. There just isn’t enough time in the timeline for any SUBSTANTIAL digging or rock removal. Maybe a little bit but we are to understand the quick turnaround from Andy out of solitary to Warden “missing him” to Andy escaping means the hole was already complete. That tunnel took a hot minute to dig. He stayed in prison on purpose, tunnel ready. 😊

This is a good theory but the problem is that we have no idea how much time has passed between scenes, which you yourself acknowledge is a hole in the theory. I think it's safe to say that the tunnel was almost completed but whether or not it was _already_ completed at that time is totally open to interpretation.
The crow in the novelette that this is from was found dead in the prison yard a week or two after being released. The crow was Brooke's spirit.
"As much as I hate this man, I don't think I could put a baton up his bum..." Hannah's humanity is a light in the darkness. And that eye make up is sick. 👍
Brooks hits so hard because it's a true story. Not literally, but it's a story repeated again, and again, and again in real life.
Hannah definitely has the most empathetic view point in all reactions.
You guys are the perfect mix of super sweet (Hannah) and wicked humor (Ash) and I look forward to you both every week. Life is just easier to deal with knowing I can pull up one of your vids and let the rest of the world just fade into the background. Kudos from Denver, Colorado!

The 90s were chalk full of such excellent films, brilliant storytelling. I just don’t think they make movies like this anymore.
But it's not just that is it? No great story or film is about the setting. It's what it says about the human spirit and this movie does it like no other. From hopeless despair to soaring rebirth. All executed flawlessly.
Ash when Hannah says how much she loves Brooks: “Oh, God.” Yeah, I braced myself, too.
Hannah is an international treasure. We must protect her at all costs! You got a good one to care for, Ash mate. Another excellent reaction!
I just love Hannah. She has the sweetest soul and tells it like it is.

When Hannah started crying about Brooks leaving prison I just knew she was going to need a HUGE hug in a few minutes. Another amazing reaction ya'll, it's my third favorite movie behind Skeleton Key and The Green Mile (another great reaction from you two)! Then Ash coming in with the humor about Jake had me cackling 🤣

It was actually very sweet of Ash to divert the commentary to something silly and light while Hannah stepped away. Hannah yelled at him for talking about the bird Jake, but he was actually just trying to lighten things up so Hannah could compose herself. Ash was affected by Brooks's death too. As much as we love Hannah, let's not forget she's a lucky girl to have Ash too.
We all knew what that scene was going to do to Hannah. It's such a gut wrenching scene.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. A lot of people think if it's Stephen King, it has to be guts and gore, but horror is subjective. Being thrown in jail for a crime you didn't commit is absolutely horrifying! Brilliant writing and brilliant acting.
Also, "I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope..." Few movies have a better closing line. An absolute masterpiece.
Props to Thomas Newman for the score. His music is a big part of what makes it a classic.

Hannah's empathy is really a beautiful thing
Jake is actually a raven, which is another layer of symbolism within the film itself:
Ravens are associated with mortality, but also with intelligence, communication, and knowledge; hence it is fitting that he reside in the library with Brooks, a purveyor of knowledge.
In Ireland and Scandinavia, ravens were also associated with kingship, and Brooks was king of the prison in so much that he’d been there the longest and had wisdom to impart to the other inmates. When Brooks releases Jake, it symbolizes the loss of his knowledge, his importance, his ‘kingship’, so to speak. The king died and his faithful servant was released from service…
… symbolic as the Viking sagas.

First saw this movie with my mum when I was about 12, I said at the time it was the best movie I’ve ever seen and that statement still stands today, at 25. Phenomenal piece of cinema.

I thought the same thing around the same age, and I've got a decade on you! Ash wasn't wrong, this movie will be watched in another 50 years and make people feel the same things we all felt when we saw it.
Shawshank truly is one of the movies of all time.
And 12 Angry Men is better.
It was a pleasure reliving this phenomenal film through Hannah. All of the the bumps she felt we all felt.
Weird she cried at every scene but the end, the sheer beauty of last 10 minutes hits me the hardest every time without fail.
This movie is my top 5 all time. I cannot count the times I’ve watched it through the years. Every time it’s on TV, no matter what I’m doing, I watch it like it’s the first time I’ve seen it. Timeless masterpiece.

1994 was the year of excellent movies. I just think they don’t make movies like they did in the 90s anymore. Such masterful storytelling throughout the decade.
They wouldn't make this movie today unless there was also a Shawshank Redemption cinematic multiverse
Oh God another "they don't make movies like X decade" comment. These will exist until the end of time. Too many people refuse to actually expose themselves to new (or old) things.
Excellent review. This is a great story written by my favorite author, Stephen King. In the novella called Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, Red is actually a red-headed Irish man. But he does symbolize the blood line of the prisoners because he was the one who could get you things.

The reason this movie is so good is that (on top of the great twist) it makes you go through almost every emotion. This is a fantastic story.

It's actually mind boggling how perfect this film is. Not a wasted line, scene, shot, cut, nothing at all is unnecessary.
I may not consider this the greatest film ever made, but it's one of the most legitimately perfect films I've ever watched.
5:56 not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but the black guy "fishing" is Morgan Freeman's son Alfonso Freeman, it's also his picture is on the young Red's jacket when they stamp rejected.

This film is a roller coaster of emotions, but the sadness only makes you appreciate the happiness that much more.
Exactly. If Andy had gotten released and exonerated in the first ten minutes no one in the world would give a crap.
The fact he went through so much, like a modern-day Job, and still was able to not just feel hope for himself, but was able to instill it in others is what makes this movie one of the most powerful films ever made.
Andy Dufresne was a quiet, kind and caring, unassuming, non-violent man whose soul could never be shattered by the savagery he was surrounded by for decades. Instead, he molded that violent world to HIS making, finding a way to bring enlightenment, joy, and most importantly HOPE to some of the most hopeless souls he could ever meet.
Andy was a long-suffering angel among men.
ESPECIALLY when you consider he had finished the tunnel YEARS before he escaped. The reason he held off was PRECISELY because he knew what the likely consequences would be for his fellow prisoners.
For before the Warden killed Tommy (adding a blatant MURDER to his crimes) Andy probably felt if he escaped, even if he disclosed the Warden's graft, he might survive such a scandal, and would take his revenge out on all Andy's friends and associates.
It was only once the Warden killed Tommy that Andy felt he might have enough to get the State Police involved and risked it.
Andy & Red Brothers for life.
What a bummer if they got in a big fight while sanding that boat and Red walked all the way back to Maine or wherever.

This is regarded as the greatest movie ever made in many opinions due to how well told and the message it sends can be retold over many generations and all could relate to the message it sends

Hannah. Your sensitivity is a rare thing in this world. Don't ever let anybody make you feel like you're an emotional being. You are sensitive, empathetic and that is absolutely beautiful. I cry easily too and people make fun of me for it. But I'm glad I feel so intensely. I can't imagine not feeling anything at all.❤
Now, no matter how many times you watch this movie, you will always get that feeling. Its a true masterpiece.

It's amazing how much DNA Shawshank shares with The Green Mile. Both are centered around a prison, both are from Stephen King, both have the same director, and there are three actors who show up in both movies.
Poor Hannah! I just wanted to give her a big hug when she broke down after Brooks died. What a sweetheart she is. She's the only reason I follow this channel. Ash can be a bit much to take at times but Hannah makes it all worth it. I follow her on her channel as well, too. I love her. :)
Andy is good at reading people. He read the guards, he read the other inmates, and he read the warden. He's the smartest guy in the room.
Some symbolism you didn't mention: when Brooks was released and was leaving, the shot was looking into the prison. When Red is released and is leaving, the shot is looking to the outside. Subtle.
The 90's was the golden era for movies so many elite actors and great story lines.
Also, Ash, HOW do you keep such good poker face when Hannah is trying to get you to tell her if her guesses are right? You're amazingly good at it.👏👏👏

It's so good because they followed hiscwriting so closely.
Hannah got me, and had the tears rolling down my face, then immediately after, Ash had me cracking up talking about “Jake the snake” 😅

Jake probably enjoyed the outside life for lil bit then came back to look for brooks not knowing he had left the prison. Jake is not a snake

I don’t remember if it was in the novel this movie was based on or if it was in a behind the scenes documentary, but I saw somewhere that shortly after Brooks died, either Red or Heywood found Jake (Brooks’ bird) dead in the prison courtyard. That’s the reason Brooks never saw Jake again. Like Brooks, Jake was institutionalized
First time I watched this movie, on my way back home, I was so dazed I missed my bus stop bc I simply couldn't stop thinking about it. Hannah's reactions are so pure and exactly how I felt watching that first time! Loved watching you guys, thank you!

There's one part of the Brooks sequence that really stuck with me. When he's done carving he just stands back a bit and admires his work. The camera shot is through the little bars that he's carving on so it sorta looks like he's still in jail. He is out in the free world but he's still a prisoner. Symbolism.
When Ash was talking about how Brooks was holding onto the bar on the bus, I view that as symbolism to how institutionalized he was in prison. Cut to the scene with Red on the bus, his hands are on the bar, but they're more relaxed.
I’ve seen this film loads, but watching Hannah’s reaction got me tearing up. She’s got such a big heart; that was hard to watch her deal
This movie really is one of the greatest. It really teaches you so many lessons and makes you want to keep fighting for your life. Whenever I watch this I think about how good many of us have it and that if we just worked a little harder and just were a bit kinder to others we’d be living better lives. Truly this and The Green Mile are my absolute favorites
You can tell a true masterpiece when the film grows over your lifetime. When you always discover a little more. When it grabs you early but still years/decades later. Maybe in a slightly different way.
I think sometimes Andy is a stoic. He often offends the guards but at the same time he also helps them and so many inmates because he wants to be free in his mind. He remains the master of himself. About his feelings, expressions and words. He does not want to become an animal because of external circumstances. If you remain free in your mind, no one can imprison you. Never.
"Isn't it just mad that I'm feeling sorry for people who have murdered people?" That's a total BANGER of a quote!! Sums up human history quite satisfactorily!!! Anyway, you both are great entertainment! I knew Miss Hanna(h) was gonna LOSE IT for Brooks. Great reaction, cheers!!
Awwwwww, love Hannah. First, hair and makeup completely ON point!!! Soo adorable! But her emotions...so genuine. I have seen this movie dozens of times and I still can't handle Brook's story. Just superb filmmaking!!

21:56 in the book it was found out Jake starved to death after being released, he had been institutionalized as well, he couldn't survive on his own. It was something in the book that just didn't make it into the movie

Hannah is the sweetest most adorable person in the world! I feel like I am watching this for the first time, even though I have watched this masterpiece a hundred times. Hannah's innocence and heart never fail to amaze me. Ash always makes me laugh until I am in tears with his comments, and little clips he adds into the reaction. I almost spit my beer out when the "Daddy chill" clip popped on. Over all, I love you guys, your reactions make you one of my favorite channels. Well done you two!!!
Ms Hannah began w/ such disdain and pain at first... i saw it in her face, but that began changing to smiles and hope more and more as the movie progressed. Oh i love her reaction and she should be included on private screenings of upcoming movies. Ms Hannah, your an absolute gem of a person.

I imagine Ash's first night in prison. The inmates are trying to get him to break by telling him horrifying stories about what's going to happen and he's just in his cell laughing his ass off at the horrible things they're saying.
However, let’s hope these two don’t ever end up being the subject of those ever-popular true crime videos. 😉
I imagine that woman's first night in the joint. There's the sisters and there's the brothers. I'm guessing the brothers would be taken a liking towards her. I wish I could tell you she fought the good fight but prison is no fairytale world 🌎
Hope and despair are opposites. It's about choosing one over the other. Brooks was ruled by fear, and gave in to despair. Red was given the same choice, and chose hope instead. Amazing.
Brooks didn't have anyone or anything else on the outside to live for especially at his age. Red still had Andy out there which gave him hope. There is a good chance Red would of ended up like Brooks if he was released prior to Andy escaping. That or committed a crime to have him sent back.
This movie is an absolute masterpiece. From the cinematography, to the flawless acting, the perfect writing, the great music, the pacing, everything is on point.
A universal tale of hope and humanity.
I must have seen it at least 20 times but it just never gets old.
"I guess I just miss my friend" gets me every single time, and Brooks...
Plus it has one of the best payoffs in the history of cinema.
What a perfect gem that movie is.
Of course now you have to see The Green Mile, even though it's probably going to destroy Hannah. 😅

I just found your channel today and I’m really loving you guys. I’ve watched this movie countless times now and it still makes me cry every single time. .
You know, this was the first time I think I ever literally laughed and cried at the same time…Hannah walking off crying and Ash giving his symbolism during the Brooks bit ( with Hannah telling him to shut up off screen ) nailed me.
Hannah has such a good heart. Such an entertaining reaction when she is so invested, instantly.

Andy always had hope. That’s why he was able to endure the bad things that happened and the small victories he had in prison. He never gave up hope.
That knowing look Ash gave the camera when Hannah was going on about how nice Brooks was absolutely killed me. Haha don't worry Hannah, that scene broke about everybody the first time we saw it. And pretty much every time after. To answer your question, Red was named Red in the book because he was a red-haired Irishman, Morgan Freeman threw that "maybe's it's because I'm Irish" line in as a nod to that (I actually just learned that last bit about the quote this morning). I read it a long time ago (it's actually a Stephen King short story in the book Different Seasons), but I think Red was in prison for killing his wife for her life insurance. Also, fun fact: the actor who plays Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) is the voice of Mr. Krabs in Spongebob. I can't get over that.
Brooks was actually in prison for raping and murdering children.
Allen Green was a friend of Frank Darabont the director of Shawshank Redemption. He died in 1993 of Aids complications just before the movie was released. Allen helped Frank get the rights to adapt the Steven King Novella and get the job to direct it.

FYI Ash, the character being named "Red" isn't symbolism because he killed somebody. Also the term "Uncle Sam" is an American term for the Federal Government originated from a character in military recruiting posters. There's other references that you misinterpret but not your fault as they are things that are "Americanisms". Love your channel.
