I found this crazy overgrown property with a completely hidden sidewalk in the front yard. I knocked on the door but it was obviously vacant, so I thought I would go ahead and get it cleaned up for the neighborhood. The sidewalk going along the front of the property was so covered in dirt that I had to use my wheelbarrow to shovel it into and haul it away. This took me about 6 hours of shoveling and then I spent another 3 hours mowing down the crazy tall grass. A neighbor did come up to me and told me that the person that used to own this property was put into a nursing home and the city had to eventually declare the home as uninhabitable because it got to the point where it was unsafe for someone to live inside.

It amazes me that anybody would make negative comments about picking up the clippings. I have lived in my house for 38 years. I NEVER pick up the clippings. I have gone over it with a dethatcher a couple of times. But my grass does just fine with no added fertilizer since the original seeding. You should consider getting a mattock to break up such heavily overgrown sidewalks / driveways. Work smart not hard. Great work. A couple of moments there with that beard, neck flap, and shadows, I thought you had AP ( Clean the City ) helping you. LOL

Landscaped for 15 years.Grass clippings are probably the best thing for grass. Not only do they decompose and provide nutrients and moisture for the lawn but it also prevents the fresh cut grass from getting burned by the hot sun.Its more about esthetics if it’s an occupied home,I agree.Lots of armchair critics sitting at home not doing the work will never know.

    • @ChrisWhitley-tx1oz
      @ChrisWhitley-tx1oz 3 месяца назад

Well I noticed you didn’t have any comments. You are right. The grass should go back where it came from. This is sometimes difficult when you have really tall thick grass. That can be hard to decompose on the lawn unless spread out or chopped up. Myself, I’m a bad boy and I steal the grass and make compost for my garden. Now if you are so inclined you can make a compost tea to spray on your yard and replace the grass you liberated.

I can't believe people leave comments about grass clippings. First, as long as they are well mulched, they can be healthy for the lawn and help reseed it. Second, NOBODY LIVES THERE!
You always do such an amazing job. And yes, I think it would be great to see the rest of the sidewalk cleared off. It's an immense amount of hard labor, but it would look fantastic, and people could use it again. I imagine a cleaned off sidewalk could encourage people to get outside and take walks as well.
As always, you do great work. I've learned so much from you on how to take care of my own yard and am very grateful. 😊

Neighbor should want the sidewalk to continue. Gosh the song in the before/after - "We lost track of time."
PS - The clippings get eaten by the worms that aerate the soil and the decomposing grasses moisten and feed, and the seeds reseed, the lawn.
Did this with the leaves of old growth trees in the fall on Long Island - mowed them when dryish and let the nightcrawlers consume the broken pieces through the grass and soil.

It is so easy for people who are in their homes sitting on their lazy butts to criticize someone working in this heat to better an abandoned home for a neighborhood he doesn't even live in. Ignore the negative remarks Spencer, be proud of what you are doing and why you are doing it, let everything else fall off you like water off a duck's back. Keep up your great work and do protect yourself from the sun, this summer is going to be a scorcher.

Great job as always! And something I really like - the change in the angles for the camera on that long, long sidewalk. We don’t always keep our eyes focused just on the shoveling; I like looking around the street at the neighbors’ yards, cars going by, etc. And if it was only forward-facing the whole time, we’d miss the “refresh” of the view of how much you’ve done to that point! Very thoughtful in how you present your work, Spencer. From one detail-oriented person to another; I see these bits 😁💜

I seriously hope the homeowner sells it to her neighbour. If she has family, heirs, etc., obviously they're in no position to take care of it. Selling it would help her financially (assisted living ain't cheap) and keep it from falling decrepitude. As always, you do a fantastic job of clearing up the property and helped the whole by unearthing (literally) the sidewalk!

  • @sharonwilson8208

You have a mower that can break down the clippings. If no one is living there, it will keep the lawn under control, but also fertilize it as it decomposes. I used to use mine in my vegetable garden. I would get the plastic toboggans out and dump the bag into them, my girls would pull them to the garden and put the grass between the rows of vegetables. Oh my goodness, it kept the weeds down completely, acted like a greenhouse, and had healthy plants with a ton of vegetables and tomatoes. In my neighborhood, if you have extra, you share with the neighbors. My neighbors loved me. Some had enough to freeze and can! My ex-husband loved all the fresh produce as well. He rototills the garden for me, and helps dig the potatoes.😅

Wowza! You must have shoveled/ wheelbarrowed hundreds of pounds of dirt! That was a remarkable makeover! Your back and arms must be so so sore.
Sure, it would be cool to finish the sidewalk...if you are able. But no worries.
The neighbors must be so pleased to have the sidewalks looked after and people can use strollers, scooters, walkers more easily...and just walk more safely!
Thank you for all you do, it looks fantastic! ❤
