- My first diagnosis video for the channel.
2001 Ford Expedition 4.6L Triton V8
The issue was that the truck wouldn't start, similar to the fuel pump going out. So multiple videos, forums and other mechanic advice later.... I found a similar problem and it was the key. This Ford has the chip inside the key that prevents you from starting it if the chip is not present or has been fried/damaged. The spare key in the video we bought and had programmed 5 years ago, no issues until now. But the 15 year old Ford key is still good.
Hopefully this will save someone from wasting time and money chasing fuel and spark issues.

Thank you for sharing this tip! My vehicle had been sitting a few months and the battery required charging. After charging I tried to start the vehicle only to find it was cranking but not starting. Your video abed me a lot of troubleshooting headaches since I wasn't waiting on the 3 second delay for the antitheft program to clear, allowing for the vehicle to start. Once I delayed the ignition key turn fir the antitheft light to clear...voila! She turned and started right away!! Thank you again for saving the heartburn, time and $$$!!!
Man, thank you for this info; I have spent 3 hours today trying to start my 2004 v10 motorhome. Finding the fuel cutoff switch was a pain, after I found it ok; hit the web again. I was 39 seconds into your video when it hit me... I was using a different set of keys I only use to open the storage compartments... I got my regular set of keys and bam started right up. Thank you again for this video. When we bought this motorhome it came with only one set of keys, so I had the Ford key made at Home Depot... it's just a regular all metal key... no chip stuff. Wow...

Good video. Thank you. This simple fix could save us a lot of money. The situation mimics fuel pump issues, TPS issues, Distributerless Ignition issues, however it is only your key that is the problem. I had the same problem. Home Depot made me some extra keys, which are starting to fail now after a few years. What is distinctive with this issue is that you will hear a very different sound from your starter during cranking if your dash theft light does not blink. It will crank faster than normal. The moral to this story is: Don't change your fuel pump until you check your key chips first!
Very good video...solved my problem right away...never thought to check my spare key, which was an aftermarket one, and it did just like the video showed, flashing the theft light very fast and no start. The original Ford key did just like it was supposed to do... Thank you...
Thank you so much for this video. I had to walk 3 miles tonight in freezing cold weather to get my other car to pick up my family. Then I thought I was going to have to test ignition, compression, fuel delivery in the parking lot. Thanks for the video.

The key was chowed up when I bought it. No fuel no start. I was grabbing fuel pump next. Who new it was the key this whole time! Thanks

We have two keys for our 2000 Exp; 1 orig-oem/1 after market. I use the after market key because I rarely drive the car and my wife uses the oem key. I started having problems with no start/hard start after a year or so. Often, it would take 3 or 4 attempts to start motor with Theft light flashing intermittently, as well. Mind you, my wife never had any problems but I thought I needed to get ahead of this before she did. As a result, I swapped out the fuel pump (without dropping tank - ugh!). Thought we were gtg but unfortunately the problem reoccurred. Was going to try a new pump and fuel filter, and any additional troubleshooting until I read a related post for a similar problem. Turns out the after market key (made in Italy and purchased at our local hardware store) has a defective chip in it. Re-posting my response in support of this video: it is entirely possible that a bad key/after market key can (and in my case did) cause hard/no start. My non-oem key has two codes on it: TK100 and FD21U. Hope this info helps anyone else having similar problem. Thanks for the video and sorry for long post.
hey, i am having the same issue, went to a couple of FORD forums, found out it is either the key issue as this video says(which is dead on) thumbs up i your video... or a broken fuel pump modulite under the rear of the truck (suv) by the spare tire. (shouts out to FordTechMakuloco).. and that seems to match symptoms.. i would try the key issue first and if not that head straight to the fuel pump modulite by the spare tire, before spending a ton of money.. *ATTENTION* First thing to check is the Crank Position Sensor. Located on front of 5.4L motor halfway down. $25 fix , 20 minutes. Very easy.
HOLY SHIT. I ALMOST MADE THE EXACT SAME MISTAKE! DROPPED MY KEYS YESTERDAY AND THE CHIP FELL OUT. FOUND IT TODAY AND IT WORKS NOW!!!!

I’m having the same problem with my 2000 F150 with the beautiful 5.4 L V8 and it’s not a factory 4K it was working just fine and I bought the vehicle but as of tonight crank no start and it’s flashing rapidly a security light going to get a new key tomorrow thank you so much
I have the same issue at first I thought it was my fuel pump change the fuel pump but it still no start am guessing have to do something with the key have a theft light
Hey I have the same kind of ford Expedition v8 4.6L but one is a 2000. Did you have a problem replacing your back hatch door top brake light? The wiring harness in mine looks like it needs to be sautered, it doesn't look as if you can just snap kin a new one. Where do you get a brake light wiring harness for that top back door hatch?
My 08 4.6L sometimes cranks for a bit before it burbles to a start while other times it starts right up. I've replaced the MAF sensor, cleaned the throttle body (took it off), replaced fuel filter, replaced all plugs and new coils. Fuel pump click on when turning key to aux so I know it pumping but how well is a guess. Any ideas what else could cause a hard start where it cranks over and over before barley starting? It's just weird because some times (mostly) it fires right up..
My truck is doing the same thing but when i floor it my truck will start if i dont floor it then it will keep cranking till the battery dies any help would be greatly appreciated thank you.
Hey i just went to Walmart this morning to get a new 99 spare key and I crank it up on my truck and started real good. But I had a problem with the old ford key i been using and didn’t wanna start the whole truck. The chip worked on the new spare key i have and starts perfectly. I guess the old key i used was old and worn out when I used it.

Hello I have a 97 Ford Expedition XLT I've changed the starter and the alternator because both was bad and truck still won't start the key turns it on but no sound from the engine the relays make a clicking sound when turning the key but nothing happened after that could you please help me thanks in advance.
so I have this problem right now,but the actual ford key is not letting me start the vechile and it’s a code 13 which is telling me that is the key so how am I I suppose to reprogram it to work ??

You have had that walmart key for 5 years - did it ever work? Did you just buy it and put it in a drawer hoping it would work when you needed it. I would use it for at least 2 weeks before I stuck it in a drawer.

Mine came from Walmart haven't had a problem those keys are battery operated??? That's what I would check.

You can get an OEM key from a Ford dealership. Be prepared to spend money! And to prove that you own the vehicle. If for some reason the key they make doesn't work, oh well. (This happened to me at a Dodge dealership.)

So how do you get the Walmart copy to work if i never had the Ford key ever. I bought it from someone who gave me one key and its not the Ford original key?

My 2001 expedition had been giving me the not start problem off and on for months. So I decided to park it for a while since gas has sky rocketed. It started one week then the next week it would not. I took in all the advice here and for others and started cheap. looked at fuses tapped fuel relay, and switched keys. So I decided to spend $15 on a fuel relay at Pep Boys, stuck it in first crank no start and waited second crank it fired up again and again. This turned out to be the advice and @15 spent

my 99 f150 5.4 was doing this. I had two keys programmed at a dealer. My keys were ilco brand. and did the same thing. made engine code p1260.
were you able to get it fixed, and if you did, how, would you tell us, due to the fact, that my expedition has the same code.. please help..

If the PCM reads the wrong key, it won't send power to the fuel pump, keeping it from starting.
I'm having the same problem. After I watch the video I can see the theft light flashing. So I went and got my we key and it is doing the same thing. NOTE: I have the original key and a Walmart key...neither one is working

@@cchoice4919 I took it to the shop, and honestly I don't remember what it was but it cost me $900.00
i don't think wal-mart have a capability to flash key in the first place they might just sole you a copy key with the chip built in , but you still have to bring it to a shop that can program the key to make it work .

My f150 - this same one, is flashing the theft light. I just have a regular key - no chip. This truck doesn't even have the auto start. It doesn't even have power windows. I got this theft light after replacing the battery. Nightmare!!
Sounds like your PCM Relay is out - it's a 20.00 relay under the hood on the driver's side.
How do I get a new key ??
Any locksmith. Ace hardware carries a better brand mine came from Walmart knock on wood no problem I know it's older than 2014!
I really wish someone would come up with a technical fix or bypass to the pats system. So you DON'T NEED TO HAVE A KEY!!! Or 2 keys for that matter. Every video about fixing, bypass, solved, or whatever title they post, it's all basically the same thing. They HAVE A KEY THAT GOES TO THE CAR! My keys are GONE! I don't have a single key that matches the car. My keys are lost forever. You can't tell me that there is no way around the security system!
I guess I have a bad key my dealer gave me a spare key until I'm done paying off my car then they will give me the original, I'm having the same issue with my 2001 Mustang GT 4.6L V8 the Theft light blinks just like in ur video

Did this really require a 6 minute long video? No it didn't.
You just demonstrated the difference between a good "Programmed" key and a bad "Cloned" key. The dealer will issue a properly programmed key with a uniquely generated transponder code based off the VIN of the vehicle. The key machine in Walmart just clones your existing key's transponder code onto another key which can develop bit errors later on.
The moral of the story: Spend the extra bread and get the key from the dealer and be done.

Moral of the story is have 2 keys from Ford and buy a 3rd off ikeyless.com for 15.00 have it cut by a locksmith and program it yourself. Takes all of about 2 minutes. On that truck then when you loose a key get another 3rd key before you loose a second 1.
