  • I'm not a mechanic but I am a DIY guy that has access to the infinite information here on RUclips.
    I ended up running into a couple additional issues beyond the starter solenoid and was kind of lucky to stumble upon the bad connection at the battery terminal. Feels great to be able to solve the problem and avoid paying hundreds at a repair shop. Decided to record and post my experience troubleshooting this issue in hopes it helps a couple of you.

      I love you for doing this! I'm trying all this on my truck now, I've been carless for a week in the middle of winter in AK, I'm about to lose my mind! I can't afford a 20 mile tow and a mechanic!

      @@sambworkin Oh wow, and you're still responding to comments after all this time! Thank you!
      I do have one (maybe more hopefully not too many😬), when you bypass the starter relay by bridging with the screwdriver, did the starter engage at all? I get spark but no response from the starter at all. I suspect it may be the battery connector, battery is new because I thought it was that, I've got a new starter here but no tools to install, so I'm trying everything else in hopes. I'm checking fuses in a bit here...

    • @sambworkin
      @sambworkin  4 месяца назад +1

      @KnockedupNout Check the connections to the battery terminals first to make sure everything is properly secured and connected. Then jumping the connection with the screwdriver make sure to hold it on there solid for a second or 2, mine sparked, and at fist I pulled it away quickly, but when I held it there for a second or 2 it ended up starting if I can remember correctly.

      @@sambworkin So I was getting spark by jumping the connection like that but no starter reaction at all. I did have to replace some fuses. My brother came and was able to help me replace the starter! We had already tried tapping it while cranking but it did nothing. Turns out one of the wires to the starter was corroded and must have been causing an arc or something because one of the bolts was nearly sheared off, but not like a cut, it was more like corroded melting crispy chunks falling off! It ate almost all the way through the bolt. With the starter replaced finally it fired right up! Thing is it gave no signs of dying, it was literally cranking one minute and the next it was just dead, no strange sounds or anything. Probably just fried.

    I feel your pain Brother! I had the same problem. Most tubers after testing the solenoid, connections etc, rule out the starter by jumping the posts with a screw driver. I don't have a neutral safety switch on my transmission, so it is not that. I was not getting cranking volts from the keyed ignition switch (new one) to the solenoid "S" terminal on the new solenoid switch. I just added a push button starter button. a 12v keyed hot wire to one push button terminal and another wire from other side of push button starter to the "S" solenoid with a 20Amp inline fuse in the line. I plan on replacing the wiring harness this winter. 1967 Mustang Gt, built 460 big block pro street car. Thanks for sharing and cheers from Motown/Dearborn.

    This video helped me today , just wanted say thanks been trying to troubleshoot it myself and tried a bunch of things turned out the positive wired was taped with electrical tape just like yours and wasn't making a connection so ima have to do a set up like you did , but I got my car to start from making contact with my battery for now and after a long day in Texas heat I finally drove my car home

    I have a 99 Ford Expedition with the same problem, the relay clicking bit not blowing fuses. Two of the relays (one rectangular and one square) next to that blue fuse get hot but sometimes it does starts with hiccups. I am going to check those wires.
    Thank you so much. 🎉

      Did your retest the solenoid after it happened again? It might have been the bad connection to start, then the solenoid might have gone bad three weeks later (?)

    I had the same issue but I though was I burned cable in the fuse box and what is causing to blow the fuse or why with a loose groud cause blow the fuse boss ?

    • @The1502flash
      @The1502flash 8 месяцев назад +1

      Any loose or taped connections positive or negative will cause a spark and blow the fuse. All the things that are wired to the battery connections, positive or negative need to be soldered.
      After you solder the connections
      the solder (pronounced soder)
      itself needs to appear shiny.
      If it doesn’t look shiny then it’s not going to hold for long. Watch a video on how to solder battery terminals. Damn good job finding the problem Brother, you have a lot of common sense ! You killed it !!
