I was a child invited up on stage at the London Palladium when Danny was starring in a Christmas pantomime in the late 60s. For a 7 or 8 year old, this was both daunting, and incredibly exciting. He was so kind, put me at my ease, gave me a hug, and it’s an experience I’ve cherished all these years. What a wonderful human being!

In 1978 Danny and Michael Aspell were judges on the talent show New Faces when I was on; Danny was very complimentary and gave me high points that took my score way above the norm; I turned that into a showbiz career spanning 45 years, only just recently retiring, I thank them both for giving me that leg up the ladder.
@Bill Fish - Nothing says thank you to a mentor like being a success. And I'd say a career in showbiz for 45 years is a smashing success! Enjoy your retirement. You've earned it!
You know a wonderful documentary when a 72 year old woman from USA cries. Ty for reminding me of a great person whose name I remembered. RIP God bless Danny
Annie you were a true true friend to Danny especially when he needed a caring friend the most you opened your home to him & cared for him till the end. He may have lost his fortune but no amount of money could buy a friendship like that.
Saw Danny appearing at a local club with Jim Davidson in Torquay back in the 80s, a week later I spotted Danny walking down a street with his beloved dog in London I stopped to chat about seeing him in Torquay, and he was quite happy to chat briefly. Lovely man
I saw Danny on Bournemouth pier probably 3 or 4 years before he left us, it was autumn and the audience was small.. he was absolutely amazing and gave everything and I’m happy to say I saw him live, sequins feathers and all.. always an amazing man.
I have seen him in Melbourne during his first Australian tour, believe it was in 1979. Just spectacular!! Can honestly say that only 2 comedy entertainers made me laugh so hard I cried- the fabulous , joyful Danny and phenomenal Victor Borge. The world is so much grayer without them.
Being in the U.S., I never heard of Danny LaRue, but I've watched this documentary twice over the years and it still brings tears to my eyes. God Rest Him.
How lovely to see him again. I watched him as a child. My parents loved him and we were allowed to stay up to watch The Good Old Days when he was on it. What a trouper. May he rest in peace.
They don't make them like that anymore. A different era, a different audience. This was a lovely tribute to Danny and of the warm and devoted friends he had.
I remember seeing him in variety shows on telly, when I was a kid . I loved those shows. But didn’t understand half the innuendos , I do now so thank you for showing this. The hairdryer story was hilarious!
Great documentary charting the highs and lows of the Star that was and is Danny LA Rue. A master of his craft, a wink or facial expression was enough. Never blue, always entertaining.
I saw Danny LaRue in 1984 when he starred in Hello Dolly! in London. It was a lavish production in the Prince Albert Theater, which was a huge venue. He was extremely entertaining and the costumes and production numbers were great.
No swearing, a bit of innuendo, nothing over the top. A show you could watch with your Nan and small children. Sadly these days, entertainers think dropping a few swear words and all that is what's needed. No. It's extremely sad that the likes of Danny, Lionel Blair, Roy Hudd et all will never be seen again. All gone with the passage of time x
Those dresses are amazing! Danny was a talented sweetheart, I think performing till late in life probably helped him make it to late in life. The world needs extra pizzas, and he and Annie and their friends gave it. Thanks guys!

I'm 58, and remember Danny from television. My parents loved him on 'The Good Old Days'. I had no idea his life had been so tragic.....as had many of the performers back then. We could all be enthralled, amazed, horrified, and laughing until it hurt. I was lucky to have known him. Danny sounded a wonderful man. Thank goodness he spent his last year's with Annie. I'm so glad he had a true, loyal friend like that to the end. How wonderful for them both! 💕

It's an injustice to witness how Danny La Rue has fallen from public memory in recent years. He was a major star, one of the greatest female impersonators of all time. Decades before Ru Paul Charles burst onto the scene Danny was a regular on TV and blazed a trail for all who would follow including Lily Savage, Hinge & Bracket and so many more. Ru Pauls Drag Race has almost destroyed the long established traditional Drag culture similar to how Amazon & Macdonalds have steam rolled across the world. We are in danger of losing so much of our history and it must be reclaimed before its too late.
@Moutton Noir Rupaul could very well be an admirer & or fan of Danny’s, even if he wasn’t, I’m very certain Ru knows who Danny is and would lift him up if anything actually.
Yes, he was a true star. I saw him live just once in a panto but cought a few tv appearances. Everyone loved him. Never to be forgotten. The best drag queen ever.

I was in a restaurant in Old Compton Street, London having dinner with a friend. Danny was at the next table with a friend. He knew my friend and sent over wine for for us.
May his soul rest in peace.
What a wonderful documentary thank you. I was lucky enough to see Danny at the Palace in Plymouth, he was having a wonderful life up to the point he was scammed , I cannot imagine what he must of gone through its so sad to of seen him end his star glittering career that way. We loved you Danny RIP
Such an amazing performer; Brought back gret memories as a childwatching him on TV all the family around. Its lovely to know that he had such a great friend to share his life with towards the end. He definately was a star.
I remember as a child watching him on TV. My parents loved him, I remember. We lived in south London then and they often went up to the West End to shows and I'm pretty sure they could have gone to see him in some show or other. His business manager and partner who had been so astute with his money somehow lost the plot with the scammers, and I wonder how that happened. I found it very sad that he lost everything and was forced to work until almost the end. He will always be remembered.
Oh my perfect a Chinese crested - this was perfect timing to see. I just have been doing drag wear since there has been so much hatred of late for the drag community. Danny La Rue was legend! Ironically I never saw him in my native UK where I became aware of him. I had to wait years to finally see him live in Toronto, in a performance I will never forget. He was a legend of time which comes and goes and yet seems to be immortal in his appeal.
The first time I heard about Danny LaRue was when he was referenced in an episode of Are You Being Served? I started trying to learn everything I could about him, and WOW....what an amazing, glistening, superstar. I was instantly enamored!
Remember as a kid in the 1970s watching this with mum and dad etc those days will never come again /Dan had amazing Irish eyes like Bambi x most women need false eyelashes he was a good looking guy x
My late father loved Danny until he found out Danny plucked his own eyebrows, this was a step too far for my father and he never watched him again. Marvellous man, brilliant act.
How wierd is that? Tolerating the gowns, the heels , the make up and wigs....but the eyebrows were one step too far!!....someones been telling porkies...or pretending for a long time.....
Because men of that era were comfortable thinking it was all show business and that he was a man at the end of the day just doing a bit. The makeup and dresses and wigs went away when the show was over but the eyebrow thing was just too "feminine" and "permanent". It really was a different world and generation.
Julian Eltinge was the biggest drag star ever, back in the early 1900's, and men would beat the crap out you if you said he was queer (though of course he was). I had that from my old vocal coach and ragtime pianist who was around and working nightclubs at the time.
I was a child invited up on stage at the London Palladium when Danny was starring in a Christmas pantomime in the late 60s.

Sorry, but your father's behaviour makes no sense .....
Because men of that era were comfortable thinking it was all show business and that he was a man at the end of the day just doing a bit. The makeup and dresses and wigs went away when the show was over but the eyebrow thing was just too "feminine" and "permanent". It really was a different world and generation.
@@MrWillHughes exactly, thank you.
Julian Eltinge was the biggest drag star ever, back in the early 1900's, and men would beat the crap out you if you said he was queer (though of course he was). I had that from my old vocal coach and ragtime pianist who was around and working nightclubs at the time.
