I don't think so. Too many basic storic mistakes, wrongly attributed pictures and fairytales about Catherine The Great. Interesting to watch, but still it's just a Russian propaganda (as the whole YT channel).
I'm serious here .. Does anyone else just fall asleep watching other documentaries and wake up to this nearly every time? I've never actually watched these before but RUclips would definitely say otherwise...
It's true! I woke up to this one at 2am and am enthralled watching it. What a treat this documentary is! So well done. Thank you. This should be a part of History in all schools.
Bro, i fall asleep watching paranormal shit and wake up to this crap. so random. this and shit about rome and egypt. idk youtube wants me to learn shit in my sleep i guess.
I have watched this about a dozen times and I just can’t stop. It’s visually appealing, and so well narrated that you don’t even need to watch it to keep up with it.
Superb production and narration. I just finished watching both episodes. I will certainly rewatch, most probably more than once. I can very accurately say I was almost fully ignorant of pre cursed-Bolshevik revolution Russian history. Eye opening. Hopefully, the nation can finally get over this very dark past. I personally can’t get over the Romanovs beyond cruel executions, but it’s been more than a century, God take mercy on this once glorious nation. Have always loved and admired their literary giants - have read Maxim Gorky, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy starting in my early childhood but had no idea that Russia had ever reached such sophistication, might and wealth before the revolt. This documentary cemented my abhorrence of revolutions and revolutionaries.
@@girumzemichael704 Everything was not so unambiguous, do not hate the revolutionaries, of course they made a revolution on German money, and Lenin himself was a traitor, but the white movement was guided by intervention, England and France actively took part in the collapse of our country, and the people, on the both sides were for Russia. Ordinary people sided with the revolution because they were tired, they worked day after day, there was not enough food, husbands were taken to the front, to fight for other countries, Nicholas 2 made a big mistake by entering World War 1. And the nobility didn't live very badly at that time. That's why people wanted equality. The revolution was necessary then, but in a different format. You can watch the series walking on agony from old media, very good.
Am I the only one who thinks it would be great for StarMediaEN to do a similar series on the Hohenzollerns of Germany, the Hapsburgs of Austria, and the Braganzas of Portugal?
Many moons ago, I worked at a university, and believe it or not my job was to type up the lecture notes for the Russian history prof for her lectures. Minute by minute, hour by hour I typed up all her long and what I thought were boring Russian history lectures. THEN, I watched these 8 episodes. Now I was sitting up, right there in the front row lapping up this information like a lap dog. I couldn't get enough. What a brilliant piece of work you have put together here. (applause) and the Oscar goes to ....
I watched all of them in a row twice. Once last year and again today. Their history was amazing to listen to, but so sad at the end. I hate what they did to the imperial family. It's sickening to think about.
Such an enthralling program. I watched over 6 hours of Russian history over 2 days. Its brilliantly narrated, the story was told in a simple and easy manner. The music at the end of each episode is so captivating. Thank you for this beautiful series. Russian history is awesome.
I knew nothing about The Romanovs but now I feel like I know everything lol very easy to follow and understand the history! Well done to the show writers!
Это не русская династия! Это романо-немецкая династия, которая оккупировала Россию на 300 лет!! Наш последний русский царь был - Великий Иван 4! Именно он создал Русское государство!
I live in the U.S. and I find this very interesting. I'm not college educated person and thank whoever uploaded this. It's nice to learn about others histories and struggles.
You definitely don’t need to be college educated to be well read in a variety of subjects. I happen to have a college degree and unless you are getting a degree/masters/doctorate, you most likely wouldn’t take a class about European History. I personally have always been interested in history of any kind and both read and watch. A personal favorite book is an “autobiography” of Henry VIII written by Margaret George. There is even an audiobook on Kindle. I highly recommend it!
I went to college but european history was not something I had in college. Something I've done on my own as I've gotten older and more mature I imagine. Just finished 9 month obsession of WWII which was amazing. I couldn't stop now here I am..hahaha. I find history of all types fascinating. I suppose I have time to delve into things more now that my kid has left for college and I'm on my own.
Thanks Star Media for a brilliant almost 7 hours documentary narration that covers all the shadows of the Russian history during the 300 years of the dynasty of Romanov.
historically informative and entertaining series on the romanov dynasty. I have watched this more than once and learn something new about russian history every time I watch it. One of the most comphrehensive series on the Romanovs posted. Many thanks!
7 hours of pure perfection, I loved every second of this series. Growing up all I ever learned was how evil Russia is and never how great it once was, and more-so how recently this change actually happened.
Well I enjoyed it too but I can’t say the rulers were great. Russia doesn’t change. Might is right was the creed of the Tsars. Cruelty and terror, murder and assassination win the day
@@jeremyparsons4940 Yes that's true, though that is sort of true of most empires I feel like. You can't really have a monarchy without oppression and tyranny of some sort.
This is an amazing documentary. I have friends from Russia and I appreciate their rich history. I've been virtually around the world during covid. This series is the best documentary I've seen on RUclips.
@@ikmoethelemaalniks1716 why are you so upset for my friend.???.you show me that you care because you're getting awful agitated about the subject..... But thank you for your reply back.
And kudos to the Russian filmmakers who obviously created this series. It's so much better than anything that would ever have been done here in the United States, it's ridiculous.
I have always since childhood had a peaked and passing interest in the Romanovs, studying all the theories, books, dynastic origins, members, and documentaries about them.
Holy smokes this documentary is GREAT.. like the old school tlc, previous generation history channel docs.. good visuals, acting, narrator.. keeps ppl interested.. better than the current gen docs.. keep it up!
If Americans made it, there would be flashes, pans, blurs, jump cuts, camera shakes, expert interviews with simple soundbytes and a narrator that sounds like the 1990's movie trailer voicover guy.
So perfectly written. The contrast and flow of historical fact and personal biography blend together in a way that keeps the listener locked into a calming arrest. With the rhythm of the narrator it almost has an iambic pentameter flow of Shakespeare's prose but far easier to listen to...brilliantly researched/ written/ presented. Kudos
I'm blown away . This historical account of the Romanovs was intriguing. The family lineage, the ascent to power within the various lineages, the stories of the personal lives of the ruling elite... the battles, the conquests, the defeats.. the power, the modernization .. all of it... mind blowing. Incredible. I definitely want to go to Russia now. I am so excited to see this place.
I actually 99% of the time fall asleep watching them! That's why I love them.....the right narrator voice is calming. This is also why I literally watch these in segments to actually view the contents!
This documentary is great for education, much better than the school books here in Finland. It's always better to also show the human side of great leaders, than just list their achievements in the corner of a page for you to memorize. It makes them feel more real and relatable in your mind. And it's almost impossible to learn about Russian history via Western media, since it's only interested in the Soviet era of Russia (which is interesting too, but it's only a part of the bigger picture).
Yes, I've noticed; the DC money grubbers are all stuck in "USSR is BAD" mode. When in actuality it was CIA contributing to the "stir constantly when boiling" - keeping "ish" stirred up from the end of WW2 up until the collapse of USSR in 1992/93. THAT'S roughly 50 years. Why are they still stuck in the RUSSIA is BAD" mode? Because the threat of a nuclear exchange keeps MONEY funneling into government, M-I-C and defense contractors, and investors' bank accounts. They've been RUSSIA again for 30 years and are not the backward, illiterate, "joke-y" country that our ELITES would have US believe. Ukraine bad corruption. Poland has the Expansionist Dreams. The Baltic would prefer a return to the Prussian ways. And Germany is a huge instigator of all that is happening at present. Putin seems patient, deliberate in the UKR situation...but I believe that RU wins this one, while America is completely unprepared for their own coming collapse. Just my two cents...
As you should, it has always been despicable to me how the Bolsheviks did that cowardly execution. I'm an egalitarian and I have socialist leanings...but that was just terrible. The story of Rasputin is also a romantic example of how awful people can be when they think they are justified using their social network to hurt others. That's cronyism and I hate it too.
Yes! Poor Nicolas. He hadn't wanted the job and his father was heavy handed and didn't teach him the rules of governing. Nicky's courtesans lied to him about his people, that they loved him and they were living well when the people had nothing. It is a great example of how too much wealth in the hands of few leads to revolution. Much like what is happening in America today.
I always felt very sad that they murdered Tsar Nicholas II and his wife and his daughters and son as well as Alexis' doctors and their servants on Sunday July 27, 1917. Rest in peace
Well that was by far one of the BEST documentaries on modern Soviet History and I couldn't believe that 3 1/2 hours went by! Absolutely brilliant in it's production and the amount of history that it covered. A MUST for every Westerner to watch, oh heck, a must for ANYONE to watch! Thanks so much for the upload!
The Soviets are the one that took over AFTER this point in time. They are hardly mentioned here. Russian history is not "Soviet" history. Soviet Union and "Soviet" history is between 1922 and 1991, if one exclude their rise to power type story.
I don't know what it was about this video, I would never normally sit and watch this but I immediately was sucked in.. I just sat and watched over 3 hours of a history program?! that is history in itself! done so well!! the narration was perfect, the illustrations and the music... perfect! well done!
Wonderful study of Catherine the Great. Thank you. My recollection of Her Majesty was about her libido. Had no knowledge of her accomplishments and rule. She deserves her titles. Thank you
Standard 2 hour movie at the theater: I’m fidgeting and squirming around like an unruly toddler by the end. 3 1/2 hour documentary about Russian rulers: Glued to the damn screen the entire time... *Bravo!* This was a very well made and fascinating series!
The Star media here did a great documentary series about Eastern front of the WWII, as well. My personal favorite is a anecdote of field mice as allied against German tank division. On YT used to be English dubbed version, this one is Russian but with subtitle available: ruclips.net/video/YMHH6XwvtN4/видео.html
I'm glad this wasn't available when I was in high school. I would have majored in history in college and would have been very poor. I loved every minute of this!
📽 This series is totally bingeworthy. 👌 This way better than any history class in school! If history lessons were taught with this captivating narrative and research told well, I reckon the whole class would get A's. 🙌
I must have had RUclips on autoplay and woke up middle of night to this. I was transfixed and had learned so much by morning :) I LOVE LOVE the production quality of this and will rewatch; the visuals, the statistics, maps when appropriate. The details of Romanov family life were great. That train wreck was crazy (!) how did the family survive it. I’ve studied history in dry university classrooms where no maps or visuals were used, a chalkboard with endless lists of terms, are u kidding me? This is how we learn.
I was dreaming about Russian history and when I woke up RUclips was playing this in my ear. I had to start it again because my dream was amazing and fascinating. Now I can’t stop watching. So good.
I am glad it happened to me. Thank you very much. I appreciate this. I am half French Canadian and half American. I know the history of America 🇺🇸 but how about the history 🤔 of Canada 🇨🇦 and France 🇫🇷 please 🙏?
Wow!! What a totally gripping, dramatic and historically educational documetary!! One of the best documentaries I have seen!! Was on the edge of my seat many times and learned so much!! Thank you!
WOW, I like many others woke up in the middle of the night to this fabulous documentary while watching a crime series...thank you for sharing this with us!
I've watched documentaries about the Romanovs but none ever compared to this one. I am now more obsessed than ever in the Romanovs' history. It's also amazing how the Dynasty started with an Anastasia (Ivan the Terrible's first wife) and also ended with an Anastasia (Nicholas I's daughter) in it, damn crazy coincidence.
What's better is that Michael Romanov ordered his 1st execution to be at the Ipatiev Monastery, and the last Romanovs were executed at Ipatiev Residence 305 years later.
Absolutely superb series - I was completely absorbed by the narrative and the fantastic re-enactments. Thank you so much for uploading in English. Best documentary series I have seen in a long time.
I feel much obliged to congratulate the producers of this series. The quality of the scenes, the uniforms are excellent. Most of all the background sound is well in the background not like the modern rush-produced senseless films where the background sound drowns the narrator's words. I am glad that there still exist people willing to spend money on perfect productions. Perhaps someone in Netflix will see this comment. It does not all have to be sex on the kitchen table in scene1! A million times over thank you.

I love history. This is the best documentary on the Romanov's. I wonder if Nicholas II weren't Czar if the Romanov dynasty would have continued. History does offer someone an chance to imagine what might have happened if there had been a different Czar.
Maybe, but probably not. They all believed more or less that czarist autocracy was the order of God, and resisted any dilution of their powers. Prince Michael, Nicholas's younger brother and heir presumptive (after Alexei) was brighter, but "gullible and naive". He wasn't the person to pull Russia into the 20th century. This documentary doesn't say much about the conditions of the common people, but overall they were horrendous, as bad as 18th century France. And Russian industry and infrastructure was stuck in the 18th century too, although it was starting to attract foreign investment -- where the workers were treated like slaves. And the Duma was simply a "talk shop", because the czar could ignore it at his whim. And then there was World War I....
@@floraposteschild4184 Alexander didn't resist the dilution of power. He was working on creating a Parliamentary system when the socialists murdered him. Yeah, things were bad for some but changes don't happen over night, and the more that man gave them mercy, the more they hated him. Russia would have been better off if the revolution had been put down mercilessly. The rise of Communism only robbed the former serfs who managed to build successful farms and cottage industries of their lives through artificial famine and persecution. You'll notice that a lot of the revolutionaries were not in fact the working class they claimed they cared for, but lower nobility and intellectual types who really just wanted to seize power and fortune through theft. It's much like the leftists of today who use socialist and communist rhetoric to excuse their own failures while living comfortable latte liberal lives.
I am grateful for this wonderful production. I am both learning and entertained. I am doubly glad in these fractious and threatening months in American history to be distracted.
This series is very relevant with events going on in the with EU support of Ukraine. Where Ukraine claims that it was never a part of Russia despite the Russian speaking populace, it became part of Russia in Empress Catherine the Great reign. It was ruled by the Turks and captured by Catherine the Great. This explained the looks of many of the people with beautiful Turkish mixed DNA, with Russian language tongue. Now, I understand on Putin's displeasure when Kiev's Zelensky wants Ukraine to be part of EU and allow NATO to be on Russia's border. And did not allow Russia to use the port to be used to transport Oil and Gas to Europe. With this historical facts, Catherine the Great's lover won thiese countries including Ukraine as part of Russia...from 1700 till the end of USSR to the Democratic Russia with a strong leader like an Emperor of Russia's past...Putin. Thank you for this beautiful historical series.

When I was a kid I asked my mother when the war started she said " When Christ was a corporal ". Then I asked her when it would end and she said " When hell freezes over ". My mother was very wise.
To the creators of this documentary thank you for making this. It's history that sometimes feels like its overlooked when people research the Romanovs. They were probably the most influential European royal family in history next to the Windsors. May they all rest easy knowing that Soviets collapsed and God and the Russian people prevailed. ☦️☦️☦️ Although, I have some minor issues for the ending surrounding Nicholas II I feel like a lot was overlooked in his reign that I felt should be brought up. He and Alexandra were avid cocaine users. None of the families charitable organizations were brought up. Nor was Nicholas II's schedule. I'm surprised no one brought up the fake Anastasia either. Regardless 9/10 freaking incredible documentary guys!!!
@@penelopemace7440 And they got replaced by a handful of genocidal and megalomaniac randoms who killed around 20 million of their own people and permanently retarded the growth of Russia. I'm pretty sure if you went back in time to 1900's Russia, and you showed the average Russain subject a history book, and you told him to choose between the Bolsheviks and Royal Family, they'd likey choose the ladder.
I'm Russian. I've never heard about what you've said. Something close to it is only rumors about Alexandra being a German spy, drugging Nicholas and talking on the phone with Germans in her bedroom. But then again, Its most likely just a madeup story Bolsheviks used to promote the revolution.
I fell asleep and when I woke up, I was listening to this. I watched raptly for the entire time, and learned much. Best accident ever. Here in the West, Russians and their history were villanised, they were painted as abnormal, vicious, untrustworthy. I never truly believed it, and put it down to political machinations as the source. I have been enthralled by this sensitive, detailed account of the lives of Russian monarchy. There is great nobility and humanity in this account, and I have greatly enjoyed it. Now I wonder why there was any stigma taught to me at all. A very disturbing thought. There is enough evil in the world without adding hate to children's mind as they develop. People are people, and all the same, no matter where they are from or their cultural background. Why do our establishments insist on brainwashing us as kids?
The cold War and communism were very real and scary. Every country has done terrible things, but Russia was our country's only enemy that was truly feared. I'm just saying, try to look at the US history as objectively as you are Russia. I've watched multiple Russian documentaries and this one skims over a lot of nasty things that happened.
Thing is, many people who lived through the existential horror of the Cold War are still alive and many are in government or media related jobs and positions. Plus the Communists did a pretty good job at coloring the Imperial era as evil times run by evil people and themselves were obviously very evil (a government supposedly created to improve the lives of the working class caused the deaths of between 4 and 10 million of its own, working class people via the Holodomor). So it's no surprise that most in the West see Russia as vicious and/or untrustworthy. There is, of course, those like me who can see through the narrative but I also don't blame people from feeling the other way either.

Absolutely fantastic documentary. I binge watched all 8 episodes and it had me on the edge of my seat.... The end was so sad but I am somewhat familiar with the Romanov story so I knew it was coming.....
The end wasn't sad. This documentary tells mostly from the side of the Romanovs, not the Russian masses. There's a reason there was so much revolt and assassinations. The Russian Revolution brought in huge benefits for the people of Russia and despite Stalins counter revolution Russia was never again to suffer from the woes of tsarist regime. Good riddance to the Romanovs.

Yes I have too, rewatched this so many times, the production is just amazing, so well done and narration is superb.
I hope to watcch it again soon. A very charming, intelligent, documentary series.

I agree. Never thought I'd be so enamored with Russian history.
He's up to Caterin The Great 👍 if we can do that today
Because I sleep and wake up listening to this documentary series I became somewhat fascinated by Russia’s history.
The amount of times I've woken up to RUclips playing a Romanov/Feodorovna documentary is crazy.
Same!! How did I get here???
It's the third time in a couple of months for me too 😱
It's almost every night... today it happened and I haven't even gone to sleep yet! I wonder how many of the TEN MILLION views are mine...

@M J welp you found me out... expect the hit man in the next 2-4 business weeks 😴🤣
This documentary is absolutely fascinating. I love learning about historical families and their lineage.
How many people watched all 8 episodes straight through besides me. I found it captivating and most interesting.
I watched all of them in a row twice. Once last year and again today. Their history was amazing to listen to, but so sad at the end. I hate what they did to the imperial family. It's sickening to think about.
Yes, amazing documentary ❤
I did watch
I'm in tears. Their humanity was brought out. Even though I know how it ends, the little family in the basement brought me to tears.
Don't read the bible then. The ending is also hard to take.
Such an enthralling program. I watched over 6 hours of Russian history over 2 days. Its brilliantly narrated, the story was told in a simple and easy manner. The music at the end of each episode is so captivating. Thank you for this beautiful series. Russian history is awesome.

7 hours of pure perfection, I loved every second of this series. Growing up all I ever learned was how evil Russia is and never how great it once was, and more-so how recently this change actually happened.

@@ceejay6882 lol, whatever floats your boat chum.. ;)

Hypnotic and compelling. Once you tune in this masterful programme you shall be unable to turn it off.
The media is very anti-russian
Yes, I've noticed; the DC money grubbers are all stuck in "USSR is BAD" mode.
When in actuality it was CIA contributing to the
"stir constantly when boiling" - keeping "ish" stirred up from the end of WW2 up until the collapse of USSR in 1992/93.
Putin seems patient, deliberate in the UKR situation...but I believe that RU wins this one, while America is completely unprepared for their own coming collapse.

didn't end well for the Bourbon's either....
@@frankpienkosky5688 then you may be glad to find they're still alive.

The Soviets are the one that took over AFTER this point in time. They are hardly mentioned here. Russian history is not "Soviet" history. Soviet Union and "Soviet" history is between 1922 and 1991, if one exclude their rise to power type story.

Beautiful documantary!👍History is so important. It's so different from what I learned from out of school.

Excellently produced, so captivating, one cannot stop watching. Thank you for making history

this is very extensive and very great for learning histories.
This may make students more interested in learning histories, more paying attention.

This is an excellent series, very well done!😎
This is the best documentaries Ive ever seen! Thank you!
Thank you very this documentation.
To the creators of this documentary thank you for making this. It's history that sometimes feels like its overlooked when people research the Romanovs. They were probably the most influential European royal family in history next to the Windsors. May they all rest easy knowing that Soviets collapsed and God and the Russian people prevailed. ☦️☦️☦️
Although, I have some minor issues for the ending surrounding Nicholas II I feel like a lot was overlooked in his reign that I felt should be brought up. He and Alexandra were avid cocaine users. None of the families charitable organizations were brought up. Nor was Nicholas II's schedule. I'm surprised no one brought up the fake Anastasia either. Regardless 9/10 freaking incredible documentary guys!!!
Hilarious - god prevailed ha, like all so called monarchs they were a bunch of inbred blood sucking monsters and got what they deserved
@@penelopemace7440 And they got replaced by a handful of genocidal and megalomaniac randoms who killed around 20 million of their own people and permanently retarded the growth of Russia. Great series.
Really? I have been reading Russian history since 1986 and I live in the US. I never read that they were anything more than fascinating.
@@thecouchpotatocom America has invaded other countries and done a lot of harm to the ordinary people of those countries . They’ve robbed pilfered and stolen the wealth from these countries and still are . But they pretend they are helping the people . Britain did and does the same (. So did other Western countries) . We don’t learn that at school . We only learn how wonderful our countries are and not the atrocities they’ve committed .Whether you do something brutally with a smile or boldly , it’s the same thing .
History is often warped and lied about but when the countries that have been wronged speak up, then we learn the truth .
The EXACT same thing just happened to me. I woke up at 2am to this, sat bolt upright, and have been enthralled watching this ever since!
