Well... Ghost is not only a band, but a whole crossmedia show. The concept itself is a very creative storytelling since day one. Inside their lore, there was a secret satanic cult devoted to spread the word of Satan. In the 60's they realized Rock'n Roll was beeing a big hit, specially on the young people, so they decided to do their job through music. So they formed a satanic Rock band called Ghost. The band is always commanded by a leader bearing the title of "Papa Emeritus". Each album the singer is changed (only the character, the actual singer is the same, of course haha). So for their first album we had Papa Emeritus I, for the second album Papa Emeritus II, for the third Papa Emeritus III. Each one of them had their own personality and background story. In the main lore, they were all brothers, sons of the current leader of the cult, Papa Nihil (first singer for the band when they formed it back in the 60's). At some point, Papa I, II and III were murdered and the band was left without a new leader to step in, so... for the 4th album they had to choose Cardinal Copia (new character) and because he wasn't part of the bloodline he couldn't get the "papa" title, so he remained as cardinal for the whole 4th album period. Right at the end, Papa Nihil died on stage during a sax solo (lol) and it was strongly suggested that Cardinal Copia was, in fact, his bastard son. So... as a member of the bloodline he finally gets the right to the title and officially became Papa Emeritus IV, who will lead the upcoming 5th album. We know all that because the band has a "mini-series" in chapters they release on their RUclips channel where the story is developed and told. The leader on this particular song is Papa Emeritus III (currently dead). The idea was to keep their real identities completely hidden from the media and the fans. And they managed to do that well until a certain point. Only a REALLY hardcore fans knew who they really were behind the masks. But at some point, some ex-members sued the band because of money and stuff and because of that, all the identities had to be revealed. Now Tobias Forge (singer and leader of the band) is well known and even do interviews unmasked. I say "mask" because none of the 4 characters show his real face. They're all silicon realistic masks with the paint on it. And the other members are called just "nameless ghouls". Back in the day, each one had a unique alchemic symbol to identify them, but now they're all "the same". Heads up: all that story of the band beeing formed in the 60's, papas murdered and blah blah blah is just the fictional background. Don't mistake it by the reality (believe me, some do haha). The band itself was formed in Sweden back in 2006 and their first album came out in 2010. The content of the songs is clearly, heavily and openly satanic. But the members beeing atheists, they say it's just a show, just like a horror movie. They do it for fun, for the looks, for the visuals, for the tradition aaaand, in the end, to kinda mock some obsolete and dumb religious dogmas. In the end, it's up to you how you take the "satanic" part of the band. Appart from that, each album has a concept that feeds a bigger picture bonding them all. • Opus Oponymous (2010) is about the prophecy of the Antichrist coming to Earth. The last song is called "Genesis" and represents his birth. • Infestissumam (2013) starts with the song "Infestissumam" and there we know that the newborn Antichrist is in fact the son of Satan himself. And the rest of the album is about the humanity reacting to his presence and how they dealt with it... anger, despair and, ultimately... love. • Meliora (2015) advance a little bit in time and it's about the humanity already used to the Devil's presence and now the total abscence of God (particularly explored in the song "Deus in Absentia") • Prequelle (2018) goes back in time, particularly to the time period of the Black Plague and show us how mercilessly God punished mankind and how his church took advantage of it, also making a comparison on how the church structure, by new forms of brainwash, spreads like a plague. It's all always connected somehow. Tobias Forge is a fucking little genius of our time. And we fans are dying to see what they have to show us in the next album/story... Welcome to Ghost, a very heavy drug you definitely should take. o/
@@JoJoLewis Papa and sometimes the Cardinal (Prequelle was a whole different concept) are played by a guy named Tobias Forge who serves as the main creative decision maker for the band, also most of their songs are about Satan in the same way Sabaton sings about war.
@@JoJoLewis Yeah, Tobias said that the nameless ghouls are basiclly hired musicans and that Ghost is his own project. Nobody knew who Papa was until some of his former nameless ghouls sued him and took him to court. They wanted money as bandmembers but Tobias won by claiming they were hired musicans. The bandmembers was totally anonymous during their first years. Tobias is a LaVayan satanist just like myself
@@JoJoLewis I don’t think so. When Tobias started the band he never knew how big they were gonna become. But they were ment to be a mystic band with hidden identities. Oh this is such a fun band to see live, I would love to see them again. If you can find it, try finding a live vid of Monstrance Clock, was one of my fave moments.
Dan Santos (a few posts below) covered the lore/history pretty epically. I'm just here to add: David Grohl was a Nameless Ghoul on "If you have Ghost" ;) From what I understand, there are two sets of musicians - elite recording musicians who are constantly changing with the feel of each album, and then a set "tour group" - Dan can probably correct me if I'm wrong on that but I'm pretty sure Tobias confirmed that. Ghost is a true "you gotta experience it" band, they're a whole world unto themselves - theatrical, deep, silly, FUNNY AF, and always, ALWAYS gracious. Ghost's musical influence range is freakin' FAR and wide...from heavy Metallica/Scorpions to 70s stadium rock to 80s glam to ABBA and beyond, and you can hear those influences clearly. Every album is like rediscovering them, it's insane.
