The dark imagery combined with a disco beat creates a dissonance that's hard not to enjoy, especially live. It's incredibly cathartic jumping around in a crowd with a bunch of other people singing about the devil at the top of your lungs. Even back in the beginning when it was more cryptic, there was a tongue-in-cheek humor.
Ghost has a beautiful song called 'Life Eternal' which is basically about death and immortality. But I can imagine it being used at a wedding. "From the Pinnacle to the Pit' is a more heavier song that you may like.
I think 'Life Eternal' has been used at both weddings and funerals. It is very moving. The video set against the Palacio de los Deportes Concert fan footage is fabulous.

Unlike some religions, that force it onto you, or in your face when you just want to be left alone. I mean, when I was 15 a little band came out with a glorified demon spitting blood and singing in one of the first known growl metal voices. Couple years later I finally saw my first rock concert in Springfield Mass. K I S S So ya, I remember picketers out front telling you to look to god not to this evil drivin band. I made my choice not to ever be evil, but I do enjoy entertainment about things that are dark and sometimes evil. Tobias Forge is all about choice....something he didn't have as a child in the early 80's so I've read lately. Love his interviews, and he's a cool good father too. Freedom of choice... Rock on! 🤘
A way to explain the music being so upbeat and pop like would be how, if you were the devil and trying to get people to follow you, you wouldn't go with the heavy, black metal or death metal because it puts a lot of people off. Doing catchy music like this however has a wider reach, so it would be the best vessel to attain that goal. That said, it's all tongue-in-cheek and theatrical. That said if you dig into the lyrics for some of their songs, at surface level they'd seem evil or dark, but really they touch on serious topics in a good way.

to me this was Ghost's first pop song. all thier stuff before this was heavier, and everything after has been getting more and more pop sounding. I still hear the heavy in the background of newer songs, but they are definitely way more pop than they used to be.

The LIVE version is a BILLION times better than the official video in all ways, especially musically and visually I also recommend Life Eternal. It's an amazing, beautiful song. It could be used for either a wedding or funeral, honestly. The official video on it is dedicated to the fans and shows the death of Papa Nihil and the "promotion"(?) of Cardinal Copia to Papa Emeritus IV Another amazing song would be Cirice! It's an amazing song that they WON a Grammy for! Either the official video or a live video showing what being "ciriced" means would be amazing to react to! Ghost are a great theatrical band, like Alice Cooper it is all about the "show". Just like if you enjoy horror movies doesn't mean you might become a serial killer.

I'll be honest guys, most of us fans are recommending their easy listening songs, but they do have cool heavier songs, my 2 intermediate favorites are Faith and Monstrance Clock, but for now we are all trying to ease you both into to the band because we love them :)

Yes, this music and the video do not match, you are right. The video is very dark. The music very catchy. (see how the Devil works, lol) Now you may want to listen to Genesis 'Jesus He Knows Me' and then listen to Ghost's recent cover of the song. Maybe review and post them together! Ghost brings the heavy guitars and drums, but Genesis is heavy on synth and drums (Phil Collins in the 1980s). The Genesis video is a playful but a snarky satire against televangelists. Ghost is heavy on graphic sexual innuendo. Their video takes religious hypocrisy to an extreme. Taking one of the lyrics in the song, they graphically explode it with sex in the video. Shocking really. But the music is catchy. They did a great cover and I like their version better than the original. (Much like Disturbed's cover of the Genesis song 'Land of Confusion')
You seem to have a taste for metal. May I suggest going back to the founders of heavy metal. BLACK SABBATH, DEEP PURPLE, STEPPENWOLF, MOUNTAIN. War Pigs by Black Sabbath is a good starting place followed by Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water.
Gonna be honest, i don't like this band at all. When you know Epica, dimmu borgir and more on that level, ghost just feels like watered down coffee to me. It gimmicky but safe. The music tries to sound tough, but really isn't. It's nothing new really. Couple of simple chords, bit of face paint and lots of promotion. And unfortunately for th3m, i heard them on a very small stage, where the singing seemed mediocre as well. Of course, this could just have been a bad day. Anyways, end of my rant ;-)
I mean, that's kinda the point of Ghost. It's not supposed to be taken very seriously. They are overtly catchy with edgy lyrics. They aren't trying to be like Epica at all lol. It's all theatrics. Very simple stuff but it just works. Just my two cents on it though. :)
