Tobias Forge plays every "Papa" he is Ghost, he writes all the music, it's his vision, hes the captain of the ship. I would highly recommend starting at the beginning with Ghost all the way up to the current iteration. Also Ghost can be the poppiest band on the planet at times with fantastic writing, but also drop riffs and solos that would make James Hetfield blush. He doesnt necessarily stay in one lane stylistically

Isn't he like a Cardinal or something on one record?
I like Ghost but I'm not a "Ghost nerd" so to speak.
I would describe his music as "nostalgic". It's very broad but it's always like you almost remember hearing it before somewhere.

@chrissibersky4617 it's intentional. It's nostalgic sounding that brings you in but is contemporary. I love Ghost & Tobias. He's a genius artistically with song writing, visuals, everything

Cirice and Faith are good songs to start with. Ritual is probably my favorite song, I like Kaisarion a lot as well. It's only 1 singer who plays different characters. It's actually a 1-man band. Tobias Forge is Ghost. He and his friends record the albums, and the people that tour are hired musicians. My favorite thing about Ghost is that every album is different. They are also very, very good live. It's a performance.

Ghost doesn't play in a type of genre. They are floating through a lot of styles. You could say that they are their genre.
But Cirice, Year Zero, and Spillways are some great songs. I don't come up with one single song that I don't like with them!

This was the first Ghost song I heard as well, and it immediately intrigued me. From there I listened Cirice, Rats, Danse Macabre, and He Is. After that 20ish minutes I was hooked.

Oh, I don't think any of we Ghost fans will fault you for saying it's poppy song writing. It's done that way on purpose! Even though it's tongue in cheek, I'd say that as far as "devil music" goes, this is far more what a character like Satan would actually do to draw people in, as opposed to black metal, because why draw people in with ugliness when you have beauty sitting right there?

    • @thing_under_the_stairs

This is a really interesting band. As a fan of black/death metal, especially the Scandinavian stuff, I was a little shook up the first time I heard them as well. I like them a lot, though. The "poppiness" works and while there are plenty of elitist haters out there I think they're great. As far as the imagery and overall concept, I believe Tobias has said something along the lines of: "I wanted this to be the band that people accused all the other bands of being during the Satanic Panic of the 70s/80s/90s." And, again, it works and it's exactly as serious, schticky, fun or silly as you want it to be. We need more of this in rock & roll as far as I'm concerned. Clearly it's possible to be accessible and still have some edge and old-school grit.
What to check out? Do whatever...there will be stuff you like and stuff you don't, but they're not a one trick pony for sure. Lots of great musical ground covered and it's all good. I've got no complaints even about the stuff I don't care for. Definitely anything off the first 3 records is worth checking out. Not a bad track to be found there.

I'd say this is pretty typical, especially for a lot of the more recent albums. They had more of an edge and heaviness to them in the earlier albums. Year Zero is a good example of what their first 2 albums were like/about. They've always been all about the chorus and the falsetto singing though. I think they really found their sound and popularity explode with Meliora. They won a Grammy for the song Cirice, and this song was on Disc 2 of that album. Rats, Dance Macabre, and Witch Image are my favorites off their 4th album. They've recently gotten to another level of popularity as one of their songs has grown to be a popular TikTok song, Mary on a Cross.
If I were listening to them for the first time again, I think I'd go with Cirice next, then Dance Macabre. I also really love Griftwood, which may not be their most popular but I dig it. Funny trivia, they use the same recording studio as Abba and the piano is the same one Abba used to record.

My favourite songs are Cirice and Call Me Little Sunshine. There are so many variations within their music, from pop/rock to prog to doom metal (but never quite death metal). By the way, the song that particularly offended the Nashville singers was 'Year Zero' (check out live versions, such as Hellfest 2016). They had to go to Los Angeles, where no-one cares about selling their soul to the devil. 😄 Ghost music is a deep dive. There's always an element of melody somewhere, even in the most evil songs like Year Zero or Ritual.

For extremely virtuosic vocals, you should check out Tesseract - Legion. If you're looking for something more instrumentally technical as well, but also extremely well composed, you could also do Of Matter (a 3 song medley), Of Energy (a 2 song medley), or Concealing Fate (a 6 song medley) by the same band. Typically this band works well with long-form progressive music, but they also do well with avoiding the "mistakes" of some prog bands by not dragging on too long or having odd transitions. In my opinion, they also avoid the "mistakes" of purely virtuosic technical bands by not prioritizing flashy and predictable shredding or time changes over the actual balance of the composition. Overall, my all time favorite.

Every ghost song has a great hook, even on their heavier stuff. Best live show and they sound better live. Each album is different. You can't put them in a specific genre. Elizabeth, death knell, faith, absolution, cirice, Griftwood and twenties are a little heavier.
