The Netflix series "The Movies that made us" has an episode about Home Alone. Its well worth a watch and shines a light on how professional Macaulay Culkin was - especially in the church scene.

The scene where Old Man Marley gets reunited with his family makes me cry every time.
Actor Joe Pesci wasn't allowed to swear in this movie so he made up some sort of gibberish to keep his outbursts clean

The actor is genuinely (and severely) arachnophobic. He was such a good sport (and VERY brave) to consent to having that tarantula placed on his face.
If im remembering correctly, John Hughes wanted Macaulay Culkin for this movie after working with him on Uncle Buck. Which, if you havent seen, would make for a fantastic reaction, and is a great movie. John Candy plays Uncle Buck. Enough said.

I'm alone since forever now (long story but I got no family or friends) and most of the year it doesn't affect me much; I'm so used to being on my own now that I got comfortable with it. But around these special days when you shouldn't be alone it creeps up on me and makes me sad.

The episode from the film «Angels with dirty souls» was totally made up for this film, but as a reference to the one you mentioned: «Angels with dirty faces»😌
We watch this and home alone 2 every yr around the holidays ever since I was a little kid. It's a tradition I now do with my kids. U should watch the 2nd one too

Fun fact: They built the inside of the house inside an assembly hall or something as the owners wouldn’t let them film inside the actual house!

This was great, and what a great surprise to get a Christmas movie reaction! 👏 I’ve been watching Home Alone 1 and 2 every Christmas since I was a kid, they are truly classics. 😄 My favorite trap scene is probably Marv stepping on the Christmas bulbs, probably because it’s so crazy that even after he got injured, he goes and steps on more! 🤣
I can’t tell you how much fun I had watching this on Patreon! I’m so glad this was your first time! I remember dying from laughter as a kid whenever Kevin played that Noir movie that had people running for cover! And sadly no, “Angels with Filthy Souls” is not a real film. I really wanted to watch it too. Their recreation of the Noir style (cinematography/ dialogue) is so well done. They sure fooled me! haha.
Some thoughts:
- This film is a classic for exactly the reasons you pointed out. The humour is classic 90s (so wholesome and timeless) and it definitely has Chris Columbus’s signature vibe. His credits include ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ & ‘Mrs. Doubtfire.’ He’s quite similar to John Hughes…and yes he did ‘The Breakfast Club.’ They both gave me a lot of gems growing up.
- What makes the movie timeless is the incredible set design as well. The red, green and gold just screams Christmas and the whole film looks like a Christmas card too. The actors are also very timeless. It really is a 90s thing I think…The acting is super wholesome and somewhat over the top and I LOVE it. It’s probably why I find Kevin’s family amusing even if they’re mean. I grew up with a lot of films that had harsh characters like that. The whole time you were annoyed by Buzz, I was laughing so hard…(yes, maybe I’m evil haha 😈)
- When you asked how did the mother know? Well, I assumed that Kevin has always been “trouble.” Even if his family aren’t perfect, Kevin definitely seems to be a bit of rebel, so I suppose on other trips he would’ve been loud or causing chaos constantly. So it was this plus mother’s intuition maybe? Oh and the actress is Catherine O’Hara. I’m glad you noticed how great she is in this. I’m always hypnotised by her beauty and her comedic timing in this film.
- Also, how dare you blaspheme the Polka King! haha - Let the man sing! They were big in Sheboygan you know? 😂😂Plus I love me some John Candy! He’s hilarious :)
- And it was so nice to see you get emotional at the church scene and then the ending moments with Kevin and his mother and the old man with his family. I remember having an 8 year break from this movie and I was bawling at those parts. The acting is just so sincere and heartfelt. Again, the casting and directing is top tier.
- My favourite trap - Well it wasn’t really a trap…but it has to be the spider every time! Marv’s scream gives me life hahaha.

The greatest crime in this movie is that Kevin never got to eat his Macaroni and Cheese... I love that John Candy and Macaulay are in this after Uncle Buck, even though they aren't in a scene together it's close enough. This and the TMNT gave rise to my life long love of pizza. Thank you both 🍕

These are immortal burglars. Any of his traps would have killed them 3 times over. They get burns and other injuries and get up like it's nothing. They are immortal. Their deaths would have been guaranteed with his traps in the sequel. There is a long-running joke that Kevin became JigSaw from the Saw movies. His traps are that level if it was a horror movie. But this is one of my favorite movies, especially during Christmas. It's in my top 10 lists of favorite movies.

How they did the stunt where Kevin slides down the rope to the treehouse was a harness shot, because I saw a later interview with the actor at one point he was actually getting a wedgie during filming! (Everything you wanted to know about Home Alone but was afraid to ask, right?) About the Christmas ornaments, they were actually made of sugar so it wouldn’t hurt the actor.

Eeep! I thought that these were done now that Christmas Day has passed, but a "Home Alone" reaction by one of the best in the reacting & commentary business? SCORE!
Now you gotta do 2 and 3. I know some people don't like 3 but I think it's unjustified because it really is up to par with 1 and 2 and I like little Kevin too. Also it holds a special place in my heart because I watched it at a time when I was young when things were very uncomplicated in my child eyes. I have fond memories of my dad recording it on a VHS to watch whenever I wanted.

I love 3 as well. Alex, the main kid, is hilarious but dangerous to the burglars. At least in that movie, the family finds out what he did to protect them and their home. No one in the original movies in Kevin's family knows what he did. All they got was those presents from Mr. Duncan the toy shop owner. They didn't know it was because he protected the store from burglars. But with Kevin without video proof or the police notifying them of the attempted burglars, would his family believe him. They make fun of and bully him, especially in the sequel. If Kevin had sent the police to his house instead of the neighbors, his family would know. That's what I love about the 3rd one. Alex was vindicated from the FBI since his family didn't believe him. No one except his older neighbor knew what happened with Kevin. He was picked on worse at the beginning of the 2nd one. I think that's why he went JigSaw on the burglars. One, it wasn't his house, 2, he hates the burglars 3, he was taking out his frustration towards his family out on Harry and Marv. And all his family got was a beautiful hotel room at the Plaza and a toy store gifts without knowing why they got it. That's why I love the 3rd one plus Alex the main child is funny and takes care of the burglars like Kevin McCallister.

Hey Nick, well...I almost didn't watch but being as it was YOU and I needed my 'Nick Fix' I did, to enjoy your reactions. ☺ The movie is fun and has it's nice moments, I never saw it until it came to Tv. It's not one of my holiday faves but fine for those who love it. The kid with the big glasses was MC's brother btw. You really need to watch- Uncle Buck, MC is younger in that and has this very funny Dragnet style Q&A with John Candy lol.
I'll be honest, I tend to just dread Dec. as that's when the 'Holidays Crazies' tend to be set off with certain ppl of my *cough* Family. And it depends on how I'm feeling that year as to whether I ever bother decorating. Even though....sigh I did this year, everything that went on before C'mas day and after for the most part just was uugghh, not good. They did have a landline but it was out of order and not working. That plot point was handled when the parents were on the plane to France.

4:00 I often wonder that too, there's always a house or a neighbor that has some infamous. We had a haunted barn. This reminds me of the Halloween scene in Meet Me in St. Louis. Also cool that this story paid off so emotionally later. Some people knock the sequel like they do the second Ghostbusters, but like that a lot of good was accomplished and it's got as much depth as the first imo.

I find it rather hard for a huge family in the numbers that they are traveling with and no one even notices that Kavin is not there? Not in the van sure the one girl counted the other kid by mistake, but what about when they reached the airport or driving to the airport that's a lot of eyes seeing whole lot of nothing. Kavin is so invisible to his family he might as well run away probably take them a whole week before they notice him gone. I have no sympathy for that mom or anyone in his family. I love the whole robbers trying to break in and him defending the home that is funny stuff, But I don't excuse the family at all. Now days you do something like that your kids get taken away. Lucky Kavin didn't get taken by Child service when the mom called when she told them that she left him at home alone. An 8-year-old alone. I am surprised Kevin wasn't removed from the family. Shit in today's day that what would have happened.

To call upon my rusty high school French, what she said was probably incorrect. She used the plural article "les" to refer to one person (Kevin). She also pronounces the "s," which you wouldn't do in French. She should have used the singular article "le," which would be conjoined to the following word with an apostrophe, because that word begins with a vowel. So I think it would be, "l'incompétent." Feel free to correct me.

The stunt team earned their money on this movie. The answer to your question is they used a stuntman who was only 5 feet for that rope stunt . He also did a stunt in Terminator 2 a year later

My favorite trap were the micro machines. My brothers had a bunch of those and they were really bad to step on.

Uncle Frank is the one who's a complete jerk. :) If you haven't seen "It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart I highly recommend it. I've watched it every Christmas since I was a little girl.
best case scenario that rifle was airsoft but to get shot in the head or the nuts would still be INCREDIBLY painful I doubt it was though it was probably a bb which would do serious damage. I remember being shot by a high powered spring airsoft sniper rifle dead square in the middle of my chest and it stung so to get hit down there or up there would suck

Not to take anything away from Macaulay Culkin as Kevin in 'Home Alone' but this is no way near the best child performance of all time. For me, they honour goes to Danny Pintauro for his astonishing performance as Tad in 'Cujo' (1983), conveying utter truth and believability in his terror, fear, epileptic seizures and easily holding his own alongside Dee Wallace at just age 6!!!
