I have an LG C2 and a Samsung Q990C sound system. They work perfectly fine together, connected via earc. My tv instantly recognised it and automatically configured it. Easy to connect, no fuss whatsoever. No drops, no speaker ever disconnected, it's a great combo, maybe the best.

Id like to add; the SONY Tv we just bought for my mom who wears hearing aids, is so powerful with sound that we have just left the 4500$ Denon receiver and full room surround sound system disconnected. It’s an 11 speaker system professionally calibrated yet she can hear Dialogue more clearly than she ever has with just this Sony Tvs screen set to the dialogue boost. Also if you know someone with hearing aids they often complain the hearing aid will amplify the wrong sound and hurt thier ears, such as blasts and explosions in action movies, which is her favorite. somehow through the magic of Dolby, Sony can make this screen give her the dialogue but also give her the rest of the soundtrack without it hurting or over amplifying with pain. it sounds natural. you’d think that a dialogue focused sound setting would mute the background noise of a movie but it doesn’t. it fkking magical. It’s also been quite the improvement to my mother’s quality of life especially when she’s alone. There is absolutely no tv or reciever on the market today that can do what a Sony can do. I know because i’m the jerk that will buy every tv then return 4 out of 5 keeping the best after i’ve tested them for myself 😂. These pieces of glass have become big beautiful windows to the world.

I have a Samsung Atmos soundbar (forgot the model) and it played nice with my last tv. Upgraded to a Sony A80K last year and the soundbar works....but it takes patience. The soundbar doesn't always connect the first time I turn the TV on. I see the soundbar light up and says it is connected, but no sound. I have to turn the TV off, wait a beat, and then turn it back on and wait for the soundbar to go through the handshake process again.
And it doesn't like it if you try changing the volume at the same time that you are launching an app.
Just weird quirky things like that.

I would suggest sticking with the same brand for your TV and soundbar if you want to ensure you're getting the best experience. I've had nothing but problems with different brands in the past. Now I use a Sony tv with Sony soundbar and theres two big benefits in that setup. First, I get to use my A95L tv as a center channel. Second, all of the soundbar remote buttons/features are controllable right through the TV remote on screen so I don't need to juggle two remotes. I've also never had any issues with compatibility or getting the soundbar to turn off and on with my TV.

@@wwepensync I went with the ht-7000 and the SW5 sub and RS5 rears. If that's more than you'd want to spend I'm sure the ht-5000 or the SW3 sub would be fine but I should still recommend the RS5s since they have up firing speakers and the RS3s don't if you want that proper Atmos experience. I thought about the ht-a9 but since I use the TV for everything I thought it was a better choice for all around use, not just Atmos.

Trick for subwoofer placement. Place the woofer where you want it to sound best. Then move around the room to where you hear it best. That gives the best room mode location.

I have had good success mixing and matching audio and TV equipment. In the living room my TV and receiver are both different brands and in my bedroom the TV and soundbar are both different brands. Both work through eARC and connected perfectly first time.
Unless there is some special brand only feature you want I definitely recommend getting the best TV you can in your budget and the best audio equipment you can in your budget regardless of brand

Put your subwoofer in the listening position. Then you place yourself in different possible subwoofer positions in the room. You pick the position where the subwoofer was best for your placement.

lol about “Gerry and Sally” (mixing audio-TV brands). But I managed to get the bottom of one of common problems, namely LPCM passthrough by carefully designing a test matrix. Hisense sent me a U8K to replace my year-old U8H even though my soundbar is not Hisense. In fact, I just finished a blog to help others experiencing channel drops. I am confident that LPCM passthrough is a solvable problem. (Also a shoutout to Hisense for standing behind its product.)

Hi Caleb. Thanks for the video. In the past, I haven't had any issues mixing brands of TVs and soundbars, then again, when hooking up via optical, there is not much to have issue with. Once I got into eARC, even there, my LG QNED85 hooked up fine to a Samsung soundbar. That said, with the added functionalities out there, I would recommend same brand TV and soundbar if you have an LG, Samsung, or Sony TV. For my QNED85, I now have an LG S90QY, and I am enjoying WOW! Orchestra. If you have Hisense or TCL, feel free to mix and match, since those brands don't have any extra enhancements for using their soundbars.

I had an av receiver/surround system on the same circuit as my treadmill and fan. Turing off the oscillating fan would pop on the sound system when it was on (sub was not in a surge protector). Plugging the fan into the same surge protector as the treadmill, ended the pipe from turning the fan off. So there is definitely in home interference.

I have a 75” TCL QM8 and a Vizio Elevate 5.1.4 home theater. I had a small issue with the TCL remote not controlling soundbar volume, but that has been resolved (I’m guessing with a software update). Only issue I have now, is sometimes when the soundbar goes to Atmos mode (speakers flip up), I’ll get no sound at all until I manually reset the soundbar speakers (use soundbar remote to put speakers down to wide mode, then flip back upwards to Atmos mode). Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t and I have to restart the TV or the Fire Stick.

I have seven Yamaha NS-6490 bookshelf speakers whose tops are currently only thirty inches off the ground, directly below my 85-inch Sony X90L. Sometimes, the dialog coming from below my X90L bothers me so much that I find myself switching to the X90L's internal speakers quite often. I know Caleb recommends using the X90L with a soundbar, although maybe the 65-inch model doesn't have the same bass ports on the bottom like the 85-inch one does. But if it does, as an audio enthusiast, I have to say that while the bass of the X90L's internal speakers won't shake the floor, they do provide enough bass to get past anemia. Plus, the X90L's sound positioning tweeters really help to get that dialog level with the screen. Until I can afford stands for my Yamahas, I am considering sticking with the X90L's internal speakers for the time being. While Caleb and I might disagree about the X90L's internal speakers, one of the statements which persuaded me to pick the X90L over the Hisense U8K and TCL QM8 was Caleb's remark that the QM8 and U8K cannot match the X90L's picture quality in certain areas. I didn't get it for its speakers. Even if I'm in the minority on this sentiment, I think the X90L's internal speakers are at least good enough for backup speakers. Would I be pushing it if I dare suggest they're good enough that you might not need extra audio gear any time soon?

Really good questions as always. I was particularly interested in the Power conditioner & surge protection as i not only want to protect my hi-fi gear, more importantly, i rely on sensitive medical equipment and live in an area with a lot of blackouts and power surges which ive heard some of my equipment stutter and even fail due to the power outage when switching over to the Tesla battery which i thankfully have. It's not always able to switch onto battery fast and cleanly enough or much worse when we manually switch onto generator power even though the generator itself is supposed to offer Pure Sine-wave power.

Another great show Caleb. I have the 85" Hisense UX and loved the tv (only just sent it back since they are releasing the 98" UX soon) it's sound is very crisp and can get very loud, better than the Samsung 900c. I think tv manufacturers should stop trying to get bass out of thin panel tvs and simply add a dedicated sub output and sell the sub as an accessory option similar to sound bar systems. I hooked a small sub to the UX via the TV's toshlink and the UX sounded excellent, no sound bar needed. The only draw back is that the toshlink out put is not variable with the tv volume so when you lower the TV volume the sub is still active, hence my suggestion of a dedicated sub output.

I am not sure if that is an option in their room, but it can help with dips in base performance and would not require moving the sub. I didn't realize until a couple years ago how much of a pain sound bars are. They're a great idea that somehow require a lot more work than they should to get what's advertised.
It becomes a whole process to get stuff like atmos working on some tvs. HDMI cables can also play a part. It's probably not worth the headache unless you enjoy fiddling with tech.
Yes you will probably get louder sound no matter what, but sometimes the higher quality audio the bar supports requires too much work to get working correctly.

I have an LG C2, Apple TV 4K, and a cheap Vizio M215 something or other soundbar. We have the Apple TV connected to the soundbar then the soundbar connected to the TV via eARC. I tend to use the LG remote, and my fiancé uses the Apple TV remote. I have basic control of the Apple TV, but I usually am watching the RUclips app through the TV rather than the Apple TV (due to the Apple TV version having a crazy signal glitch at the beginning of every video or ad break). The main issue is that the Apple TV remote rarely has volume control for the sound bar. I suspect it’s due to having the devices daisy chained and HDMI CEC not quite working right. I thought the glitch on the RUclips app was due to the soundbar as well, but it only does it on the RUclips app through the Apple TV, so it’s hard to attribute it to the soundbar. I have casually started shopping for another soundbar, ready to spend a bit more than $200 on a soundbar this time around lol

I have the 77" LG C3 OLED TV and the VIZIO 5.1.2 Elevate Sound Bar about every other week I have to unplug them and plug them back in for the volume adjustment to work. Not a great experience so will probably update my main soundbar in a year or so )-:

I have a Sony tv with a Sonos Arc that’s mostly good. Occasionally when changing sources(Apple TV to cable), I lose audio and have to unplug the hdmi cable to the arc and plug it back in and it works. It’s a pain but whatever. I know it’s either the arc or the cable because it happened when I had the arc connected to my LG c8.

I'm a bit hard of hearing & tend to watch a lot of TV w/ headphones. FWIW I've have pretty good luck w/ Avantree brand which can be found on Amazon. Reasonable price & design to have higher sound volume.

Dominique Hernando, I would go with the Samsung S89C from Best Buy. It's currently (as of 3/11/2024) $500 cheaper than the S90C and $2000 cheaper than the G3.
I have a S89C with a Sony HT-RT3 surround sound system hooked up to it and have had no issues.

I have all my AV gear plugged into a UPS in case of power outage. It gives me time to shut everything off properly if I'm using my gear and suddenly lose power. They are pretty affordable.

I asked the first question as well but with a different twist. I was curious how Samsung Q-Symphony, LG Wow Orchestra, and Sony Acoustic surface compare against each other if you have the same TV and soundbar? Any different? Any good? How do they rank?

I had a Hisense TV and Hisense soundbar. It was terrible. Lost sync within minutes, and had other issues. Sent both back.
Now have a Sony TV with a Visio soundbar. Works perfectly! Absolutely flawless. So there you go.

Based on the 10 mins new Sony sound, my guess is that Sony is going to have their own version of Dolby flex connect. Seen things flying around for it to be called Bravia theatre quad, so I'm guessing that they've found a way to do away with the control box on the current HT-A9 system and that the TVs will basically become the new control box/AVR etc. Probably be some updated drivers and they will come in black this time which also means you can do away with the cable to use the center acoustic mode as well.

My Sony TV's sound control used to operate perfectly (except for bad audio quality) until I added the supported Sony HT-A7000 soundbar with sub and rears which is connected via eArc so all should be perfect. But no! Lip sync is off but the timing varies so it cannot be easliy corrected. However, some of this may be due to RUclips TV that sometimes destroys lip sync by being up to one second off!
Sony seems to require auto volume to be turned on in order to get any surround effects. Auto volume then turns the sound to zero when muting or when fast-forwarding, then s-l-o-w-l-y turns the volume back up causing you to miss the first few seconds of dialog. Simply raising or lowering volume is now V-E-R-Y S-L-O-W and then it suddenly takes off and grossly overshoots. While raising volume I sometimes see the volume number go down one and then back up again.
The time it takes to turn on the TV/soundbar varies. Sometimes it turns on like the TV used to before soundbar with a quick press on the power button. Other times I have to hold the power button down for most of a second before it turns on.
So matching TV and soundbar brands doesn't always work, at least with Sony.

I used to be a stickler for making sure all my A/V equipment came from the same brand to ensure maximum compatibility.
However, with my last upgrade, I decided to abandon that approach in favor of selecting the best available components regardless of brand. I ended up with an LG C2 OLED and a Bose Smart Soundbar 900 and I couldn't be happier.

Quickfire question format big improvement Caleb. Not enough time to rant about dumb questions without enough detail or not answering everyone's question (we get it, you don't need to tell us). Not many disclaimers about over simplifying the answers (we get it, you're just taking a punt). Really good decisiveness in answers, not hedging your bets (product A is actually better for you than product B). Good teaser with the reference to Sony without overplaying it. Keep up the good work!

For affordability used receivers are the best. I use a 10 year old Yamaha receiver that I found at Goodwill for $10 paired with Kenwood speakers I found on Facebook marketplace for $20. It has a ton of settings that I can switch on the fly for when my neighbors are home and don’t blast them with my subwoofer. Lots of used electronics stores and some thrift stores have receivers because people are switching to soundbars. My good friend has an expensive soundbar that sounds great whenever I’m over there, but my $30 setup still blows that soundbar out of the water.

Bluetooth AptX devices work great with TVs, no sync issues. Just buy a transmitter+receiver, and pair with your favorite pair of wired headphones or earbuds. I put one on my parents TVs that will broadcast to multiple receivers. My dad and I can watch football in peace while everyone is yapping away.

Hey Caleb, I’ve been following your channel for at least 2 years. I do have a very complicated question for you and I’ve been trying different things and I’m tired of returning things to Best Buy. So here we go.
I purchased the three year old Apple pro max headphones, and I have no problem listening wirelessly via Bluetooth on the latest Apple TV 4K.
Here is where it gets complicated, I have a Frenchy, who falls asleep, right around the time when I want to listen to True HD -Atmos on my Blu-ray player. I have tried 5 to 10 different ways to listen to my Blu-ray disc wirelessly on my Apple pro max headphones , I’m sure there is a relatively simple answer for this. I just can’t find it yet. Any advice?

I've used my Samsung K950 Dolby Atmos soundbar with my lg 79"uhd 3d TV, I've also used it with my 85" Samsung Q60 TV and now I'm using it with my 85" Sony X90L. My experience.. the sound seems to be better on my Samsung soundbar from my Sony X90L. I used to keep my volume at 21 from my Lg and Q60. Now my volume is always at 14 from my x90L. Also there's less distortion on my subwoofer. I have a more powerful, cleaner base. You don't have to stick to the same brand

HDMI ARC supports compressed Dolby Atmos via the Dolby Digital Plus codec. I don't think many streaming services use uncompressed Dolby Atmos. Therefore, it should be okay for the first question asker to use their ARC connection if their TV supports DA passthrough.
