Long time Petra fan here, I'm 56 and first heard their music in 1980, I was 12, and I was hooked! As you explore this band you'll see they cover several genres/or styles of rock through the years. There early stuff from the 70's(Petra-74, Come Join Us-77, Washes Whiter Than-79) has a Kansas/Boston/Skynard feel to it, there first three albums in the 80's(Never Say Die-81, More Power To Ya-82, Not of this World-83) has a Journey/Styx vibe, Beat the System-84(more techno rock)& Live album of the tour Captured in Time & Space-85. The first album Bob Hartman does vocals, as well as other band members of the time. Greg X. Voltz joins the band on the Come and Join Us album as the main lead singer, and continued until Beat the System album, and tour, leaving in 1985. Former lead singer of Head East John Schlit after leaving the band due to drugs, and alcohol in 1980. He has a testimony of how he became a Christian, and God turned his life around. He spent five years just working taking care of his family, and working in his church. During this time John met Bob Hartman on a plane, and they had some good conversation. So when Greg left, John was the first person Bob called. The next phase of Petra developed into a more arena hard rock sound, Back to the Street-86, This Means War-87. When On Fire-88 came along with Petra Praise-89, Beyond Belief-90(what I like to call the trio being similar in style/sound), where Petra developed and edgier sound with metal elements. Then Unseen Power-91, Wake-Up Call-93, hard progessive rock with gospel undertones. No Doubt-95, more of a alternative rock sound, Petra Praise 2-97, continued with alternative sound(less edgy than first praise album). God Fixation-98, Double Take-00, Revival-01, continued alternative sound. Jekyll & Hyde-03, returned to their hard rock roots with a modern metal edge, Farewell-05, has mostly Jekyll & Hyde sound for most songs, and brought in former lead singer Greg X. Voltz to do a few song from his era. Back to the Rock-10 is a reunion tour /recording with Greg, and other members from the early 80's. Petra had there 50th Anniversary in 2022, and has done a tour( I saw them in Oct.22-Awesome), and then 50th Anniversary of their first album for 2024, and are currently touring(I saw them April 18th near Orlando, FL- Awesome). This is most likely it for them as Bob Hartman turns 75 in December. This is a general overview of Petra, considered the pioneer of Christian Rock! I tried to be as brief as possible, if you have any questions let me know.

Petra is great!! love the reaction. Hope you can do more Petra. I have seen Petra live about a dozen times and it is always a great show. They are currently touring on the 50th anniversary tour. Petra has a wide variety of styles from the years they played. My first album I owned was "On Fire" and is one of Petra's heavier albums along with "Jekyll & Hyde". Songs I would recommend by Petra are: "All about who you know", "Mine Field", Beyond Belief", "Hit you where you live", "Counsel of the Holy", "This means war", "Midnight oil", "Armed and dangerous", "Jekyll & Hyde", "Test of time", "Woulda Should Coulda". These listed are heavier songs. Many more amazing tunes with different styles are like: Graverobber, Creed, Sleeping Giant, More Power to ya, Backsliding blues, God gave rock and roll to you, Clean, Rose colored stain glass windows, No doubt, Praise ye the lord. and I could go on and on so many great tunes.
Also hope you can check out Bands X-sinner, Randy Rose (Rose), and Crashdog.

The singer joined around `85, and is the former singer for Head East. You may remember the song "Never Been any Reason" (Save my life Im going down for the last time, Woman with the sweet lovin', better than a white line). John Elefante, the singer for Kansas, and his brother Dino produced most of their material around this era, and I would imagine John is singing BGVs in places. Their former singer was Greg X Volz.

I stumbled upon this video! Great job, love your air instruments and spirit 😜.
Petra/ John schlitt!!! Help turn my world around, They Rock with so much feeling and emotion .
Meaningful heartfelt lyrics. I have always been into classic rock. Could not get into the Christian rock scene, until I heard this band. Thank God for John schlitt and Petra music.
Love this video, love to see more.

YESSSSSSS PETRA WHOOOOOOO!!!!!! My all time favorite band right there. Seen them 14 times. The last was in Aug. of 23 at the Illinois state fair. They are a band that has changed and evolved a lot over the years. Lots of different sounds to check out if you are so inclined. All Fired Up is a good representation of their late 80s early 90s arena rock sound. Some other good tunes from that era to check out. Get On Your Knees and Fight Like a Man off of This Means War, I Am On the Rock and Beyond Belief, off of Beyond Belief, Dance, off of Unseen Power, Midnight Oil, off of Wake Up Call and the whole rest of side 1 on On Fire. The lead singer during that era, John Schlitt, was the lead singer of Head East during their 70s heydays. If your in the mood for something a little more metal, check out Jekyll and Hyde.

Petra as a recording band is no more but Petra as a touring band is very much still going. But never say die (See what I did there) I wouldn't put it past them to record a new album. For me my favorite Petra album is This Means War. Petra as you mentioned began way back in the early 70's as a contemporary rock band and morphed beginning with This Means War into more of a Hard Rock Band.

A nice recipe of very mainstream, radio friendly, in the pocket mid-80's commercial metal! I will also offer horns for these guys being from Indiana! Midwest represent! 🤘

HUGE Petra fan here! "On Fire" has some real head-bangers! Check out "Mine Field" and Defector" if you want more shredding. PETRA as a band is a worthy deep dive from the 70s to the new millennium. Their style shifts from CCR-style rock back in the beginning, pop rock in the late 70s, a stab at synth rock in 1984, arena rock in the 80s, and on from there. I literally can't list all their best but check out "Chameleon," "Judas Kiss," "Pied Piper," "Seen And Not Heard," "Midnight Oil," "Underneath The Blood," "This Means War," and a ton more!

Anything from this album, Beyond Belief, and r Jekyll and Hyde.they also had some great songs early on but it’s stylistically different as they had a different lead singer who was more of a baritone up until the mid eighties.

Sure enjoyed Petra back in the day. Lucky for me, they played much heavier live than in the studio. A Petra show was the second loudest I ever experienced, One Bad Pig being number one.
Check out another Petra recording - the live version of Backsliding Blues from 1976. Early Petra had a somewhat different flavor from the later version. ruclips.net/video/0ha-NoBXBgg/видео.html

Petra is to Christian rock, as the Beatles were to secular rock.... Both were trend setters.....
