      When the Reign Comes Down
      Stranger
      Lies
      See No Evil
We are Young, We are Strong
      Cry Out for Love
      Tear Down the Walls
and one of the ballads is decent too: The Pain Inside of Me
      It's a solid, late 80s album
      6.7/ 10
      it has some gems

Really enjoyed your review. This album remains one of the best metal albums I’ve ever heard (regardless of the “Christian” label). At the time, I was very devout (young and easily lead). Over the years, I found my own peace and steer clear of most religious avenues, however, good music is good music and this band was indeed GREAT. Composition and songwriting was top notch. Stephen’s vocals…. Ahhhhhh. SO clear, strong and emotional. I’m happy this band played a big part in my teenage years. I’m 50 now. Wow. 🤘

I watched a interview with the lead guitarist the other day with this band and he took a job with the railroad as insurance way back when the Last Train album came out in 1992 if the band didn't make it big...very smart because now he is almost retired after working with the railroad making big money with huge benefits ...Not many musicians played their future out early in the game and lost big when their popularity took a dive

OK Shane. You want the back story? You got it. - PART 1 - (part 2 continues on your review of RECON, Behind enemy lines) So funny you mention for STRYPER to "watch out" for Holy Soldier. Actually they were torn from the same cloth of sorts. Both Stryper and Holy Soldier were Managed and backed financially by Daryn Hinton, who's family was involved in "Hollywood" for many years. Another main reason why these two bands were connected in the same family , as it were, is because they both were involved in a "rock and rock church" back in the 80's called "Sanctuary", that basically started from a bible study at the Sweet's house in La Mirada in the early 80's. I found out about Sanctuary after attending a Stryper concert in September of '84. This church was pastored by long haired Steve Valdez, leading packs of long haired rockers and head bangers that no other church wanted. Because of this, many musicians started going there and therefore was saturated with many musicians that had the pick of the litter to form a band. Many, many bands were formed there or met there. Eventually Sanctuary released complication albums called "California Metal" that featured many of the bands that were "born" there. Some of the bands that originated there were Stryper, Barron Cross, Neon Cross, Recon, Eternal Ryte, Holy Soldier, Crystavox, Emerald, Holy Rite, Guardian, Deliverance, Vengeance Rising...and the list goes on. The original singer for Holy Soldier, formed in 1985, was Robbie Brauns. For reasons that I am not aware of, Robbie was not a part of the band by the time Holy Soldier recorded their first album in 1990. In 1986 ish, I use to attend a bible study at Andy Robbins house, the founder of Holy Soldier. Robbie was at that time no longer with the band and they were looking for a singer. Hey !! I sing !! So back to Daryn Hinton. Because she was the manager for the band, regardless of how well I knew the boys from the band, I was still required to provide a head shot, demo tape, Bio...blaw blaw blaw, which I didn't have. And with all the "red tape" ahead of me, a try out rehearsal was nowhere in sight. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, (Sanctuary) I heard that George Ochoa, founder of the band RECON was also looking for a singer. Hey!! I sing!! He gave me a demo tape of a song that had no lyrics yet. He told me to write lyrics to this song and I'll schedule a rehearsal in a couple of weeks. REALLY!!!?? Goodbye Holy Soldier tryouts! RECON, here I come. So I wrote the lyrics to the song and named it "Break Out". After the tryout, I was informed that they were looking for something more like a "DIO" type voice and I had more of a Bon Jovi-ish type range. So.....needless to say, I didn't get the gig. Also Holy Soldier went on to find Steven Patrick, who ended up replacing Robbie and recording the same album you heard today. The story didn't end there for me though. As the story goes, after my try out with RECON, George mentioned that they were also looking for a rhythm guitar player, and if I knew anyone to let him know. Hey !! I play guitar !! News to George, he then gave me another tape to learn a handful of original songs. He rescheduled another rehearsal as a rhythm guitar player a few weeks later. As luck would have it, I got that gig and became the rhythm guitar player for RECON that basically started in 1987 and lastest many years to come. (more on this later). We recorded our first DEMO in that year that included four songs. The DEMO let Sanctuary know that we were ready to submit a song for their compilation album. So we went into the studio, recorded two songs, and those two songs, "Light the fire" and Dreams" were released on the "California Metal - Volume II" album in 1988. Those two songs then caught the eye of Capitol's, Intense Records. We went on to record and release our first full album in 1990 called "Behind Enemy Lines". - (part 2) of this story will take place on Shane's first listen to RECON's - Behind Enemy Lines. ~Eddie Starline

We spent the whole festival with you guys and you were all so gracious and supporting even to a freeloading bum such as myself at the time. What an experience!

I saw these guys live back in the day, touring for this, their debut, album, at a place called ‘The King’s Place’ in Columbus, Ohio.
I remember it was hot in that building and I remember having a great time and I remember the drummer at one point banging on the drums with those big, toy plastic bats. Banging on the drums, then banging on his head with them as he hit the bass drums. It was fun and silly and they ROCKED!
Also, I won some radio contest thing where they gave away a promo package from that album. I still have it somewhere packed away. If I remember correctly it was a copy of the “Stranger” CD single, a cassette of the whole album and a black and white promo photo of the band…all inside a tuck box that also had a black and white photo of the band. To this day, I’ve never seen another one.
This is one of my favorite Holy Soldier songs and probably the strongest and most haunting anti-abortion songs I’ve ever heard. It still hits as hard as it did the first time I heard it.

Wonderful band. Came out of Los Angeles in the late 80s. Had a distribution deal with A&M Records. First two albums are fantastic-amazing vocals and songwriting. Two great guitar players and a solid rhythm section. They should have been huge but were late to the game. They choose a lead single (well, their first video anyway) that is brilliant but is controversially about abortion. The song begins getting airplay on MTV until the channel realizes what the song is about, and then it disappears. Their first album isn’t released until 1990 and by the time the second one comes out (1992’s Last Train) Grunge has already gotten a strong foothold. They don’t get good support from their label on their second album-no tour support, and are told they must tour the record or they’ll be dropped. Internal strife tears this band apart on that tour and the band parts ways with Steven Patrick (vocalist) near the end of the tour. They completely retool for their third album which only contains two of the original 5 band members from the first album, and one of the guitarists from the second record. It’s a radical departure from their signature sound. Good but may as well have been a different band. That’s Holy Soldier in a nutshell. For me, their first two records are among the very best in the genre. Better than anything Crue, Ratt or Poison ever released for sure, and it kills me that they aren’t more of a household name.

Great band but could never live up the hype the magazines were through at them. They were labeled as the next Stryper. My two favorite songs on the self titled album are Tear Down the Walls and When the Reign Comes Down. This is a good song as well. Touchy subject matter.

Hey hey. Im sure I've heard this one before... Heh. From the first album all the songs are great. It's so difficult to pick one. The second, "Virtue and Vice" from last week and the title track "Last Train"-- the time when doing the same formula of arena rock, hair metal just wasn't going to cut it anymore
Live? Terry Russell's drum solo with wiffle bats. Not something one sees often, if ever.

This song is obviously about abortion. Very hot topic right now with elections coming up and the recent SC ruling. Great song and band. Other great songs not mentioned are The Pain Inside Of Me, When the reign comes down, Eyes of Innocents, and Last Train. I was not that thrilled with the third CD. It may have been a different lead singer. They tried that mid 90's sound but it didn't work.

    Love your facial reactions.
The absolute best holy soldier song , ever ever , ever , EVERrrrr.... !!! Is actually a cover song. The rolling stones gime shelter! Once you listen to that mother with good head phones on at level 10 you will never go back to the original again!
Not just harder musically but in every way better, much better! I think holy soldier had a lot of talent especially the singer from their first records. Songwriting maybe not quite as much.
Doesn't hold up well as other artists of the genre.
As good as great whites cover of babe I'm going to leave by Zeppelin is so much better than the original so is holy soldiers cover of gimme shelter.
    Peace.
