Well deserved, Jimmy! I think the weapons album single handledly took me out of secular music completely -- knowing there was a true alternative you the garbage I was eating prior to that.

Deliverance made a lot of waves with their first 2 releases. After they released What A Joke, fans stopped taking them seriously because that album was basically just them goofing around. The title track and a metal version of Silent Night are the highlights for me. They also re-recorded a song called Attack, previously only available on a compilation called California Metal. But most fans came back into the fold after the release of Stay of Execution in 1992 and Learn in 1993. Stay was a back-to-basics album and together with Learn, mirrored Metallica's Black Album in style and performance. River Disturbance wasn't great but had a couple ripping tunes on it, most notably the opening track, Belltown. Camelot in Smithereens, released in 1995, was terrible IMO. Grunge basically killed any metal band, especially in the Christian realm where they have difficulty getting an audience anyway. So groups like Deliverance, Whitecross, and Holy Soldier were scrambling trying to stay relative. But I always say do what got you there. You're not going to gain fans by playing a different style and you'll lose the ones you have if you do. Camelot was very David Bowie - inspired. I am not a fan of Bowie but if you like that European pop-rock/new wave stuff, you may dig Camelot in Smithereens. Deliverance basically stopped playing until the 2000's and has since released several albums on 3 Frogz. The band have tried to capture the magic of their early sound on these latest recordings and has had limited success in doing so. There are a handful of songs from Assimilation, As Above - So Below, Hear What I Say, and The Subversive Kind (all released in the 2000's) that are decent but the majority of the tracks on those albums are misses for me. The debut album, Weapons, Stay, and Learn more than stamped Deliverance's mark on Christian metal so for that, they are generally considered near the top for most fans of the genre.

What a Joke was a forced album by the record company. Still, it has some of it's bright spots. But this is what happens when Record companies force a band to put out something they are not ready to put out. The landscape is littered with lackluster and forced albums.

Deliverance, with their album called Camelot in Smithereens, was my introduction to Industrial Metal.
Yes, Mortification is Christian. Mortification of the flesh was a ritual performed by some sects.
From Wikipedia. "Mortification of the flesh is an act by which an individual or group seeks to mortify or deaden their sinful nature, as a part of the process of sanctification"
Also from Wikipedia. "Mortification is an Australian Christian death metal band which was formed in 1987 as a heavy metal group, Lightforce, by mainstay Steve Rowe on bass guitar and vocals"
Holy 5oldier. That brings back memories. I liked them a lot. I found them with their Encore album. Never saw in concert. I think they were glam metal. Definitely different altogether. Definitely good.

As a young kid I really loved metal. By the late 80's I started getting into Christian Metal as I was just starving for more metal. I came across a compilation album called California Metal. Has some great bands on it...Barren Cross, Guardian, Neon Cross, Mastedon. Well I'm jamming through the album digging what I'm hearing the first Deliverance song on the album comes on A Space Called You and I'm like yeah that's a good song nothing special. But then Attack comes on and I sat up pumped my fist in the air and was like a Thrash Christian Band...Could it really be?!? I went right back to the store looking for anything I could get from the band. Nothing. Their full length album didn't arrive until almost a year later. I did manage to get their demo Greeting of Death. Ask Jimmy about why it's not called Greetings of Death. And there you go a life long fan. I even back Jimmy on Patreon today.

My first ever metal show was Deliverance sometime in 92. I was 11, and my mom was getting into christian metal so naturally I was also getting into christian metal. That show was outdoors, but under a large metal canopy. A place you'd have a livestock show in, so it was all dirt everywhere. I will always remember the dust cloud from the circle pit, not to mention that that was my first ever observed circle pit. What a fucking thing to see as a kid. I was hooked. My mom and I had been listening to Deliverance and Tourniquet a bit prior, so the hook was already set, but that show reeled me in the rest of the way. That show also gave me a couple of now long time favorite christian metal albums through a sampler that someone handed to us. That sampler had a song each from Circle of Dust and Branchild. My mom soon bought the 1992 releases of Circle of Dust - s/t and Brainchild - Mindwarp, and my love of electronics mixed with metal was born. Both albums would later be re-released in 1994 with various changes. I'm not as much of a fan of these since I'm so used to the originals, but they are still pretty great. Anyway, first 5 Deliverance, first 3 Tourniquet, first Vengeance Rising album and a Believer track from a comp was my intro to thrash (and heavy, speed, death/thrash and other). Mortification and Living Sacrifice (Nonexistent era) got me into death metal, also from comp tracks. Circle of Dust, Brainchild and Under Midnight were my intro to industrial metal and electronic music. Christian metal got me into metal, and I still revisit all of those albums fairly often, along with others and all of my sinful records that I also own as well. Thank god for dark and evil sounding music! Anyway, some songs you might check out: Cranial Tyrant by Brainchild (Circle of Dust), Dissolved by Circle of Dust, Misanthrope by Argyle Park, Downside by Klank and The Battle of Armageddon by Incubus. There are so many more I could mention, and I didn't even bring up the xtian metalcore. This is probably long enough. Thanks for reviewing some shit I like! Take care!

Watching Shane reminds me of Jack Black from School of Rock lol. These guys are amazing, I'm more of a fan of their earlier music but all their stuff is good

The album Learn was my favorite, but there’s good stuff on all their albums. Jimmy Brown has a knack for a creative riff with a hook or a groove.

You should check out a band called Watchman. Especially the 1st album it's very heavy metal and the lead singer sounds a bit like Dio. Love Deliverance and appreciate your objective critique of Christian bands.
