  • Single shot rifles are popular with American Shooters since the days of the buffalo hunter. The concept of shoot one shot and make it a good one is as alive today as ever. Here is a good shooting rig from Thompson Center - the Contender Short Rifle 44 magnum...

    People were saying that they go off by themselves really easy , it's because of the trigger set, if the trigger set is very light you must be careful and respect the weapon and not loading it until you are ready to fire on very soon will . The adjustable trigger set helps accuracy on your hunt with sight alignment and trigger squeeze.

    Same set up here in 45/70 althou went with a 2" dot Ultra dot on Leupold steel base & rings. No optic changing when i switch from rifle to a pistol grip . They are awesome, older models having the best triggers.

      David River - Thanks for your good comment. I really do like the trigger on my TC - it is, indeed, one of the earlier triggers - like the trigger on a Shiloh Sharps double set 45/70. Happy New Year to ya..!! FC

    One of the first guns I ever bought was a Thompson Center Contender with .22 LR barrel, a .222 Remington barrel, and a .357 mag barrel. Sold it after a couple years to help finance a Colt 1911, but man it was a great accurate gun and I was stupid to let it go. However, I've enjoyed my 1911 very much also. Now lately I'm seeing a few Thompson single-shots on the used gun racks and will probably spring for one again if I find the right barrel (the .357 mag would probably do it for me).

      eqlzr2 - The 44 Mag barrel is also a hoot...accurate as a pin. But I would never turn down a 357 barrel for that rascal...very versatile shooting... Can't go wrong with a Colt 1911 though...congrats on your ownership of that...Best to ya for a fine 2017...!! FC

    Nice machining on that rifle, and a fine example of a TC. It reinforces to me the silliness of some federal laws around pistols and rifles, like the arbitrary 16 inch rule if you have a stock mounted on a firearm.

    Just picked up a T/C factory 357 max barrel. Allows me to shoot 357 max, 357 mag and 38 spl from one barrel. Contender is truly the do it all pistols.

      Hogman Go - Congrats on your TC 357 Max - You forgot to mention that you can also shoot 38 Long Colt and 38 Short Colt - I've done some work with the 38 Short Colt and it is a handy round for when you only want some low velocity efficiency. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!! FC

      MrAlittle5150 - Congrats on your TC 357 Max also - Elgin Gates would be smilin' in approval. Yes, brass is hard to locate as it is only made in limited runs...Good news is that MidwayUSA has it available as we speak - just checked for you on the Midway site - search for 357 Maximum brass...$21 for 50 - not bad. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays!! FC

      Thanks for the info. but a guy at the gun club I'm a member at sold his 357 Maximum and sold me 400 cleaned and polished pieces of brass for $40. He told me $20 at first but I felt guilty for taking it at that price so I gave him $40 for it and took him to lunch LOL.

    I usually like wood but that Pachmayr fore-stock looks great! How low can the triggers get on a G2?

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  8 лет назад

      +captainpegs07 -- Gunsmith can probably get the G2 trigger down to 2 1/2 pounds with reliability and safety. But can't match the G1 Contender's trigger. I've reported mine breaking at a little over a pound, but it's actually a 1 pound trigger - people can't believe that until they actually try it. Good shootin' to ya... FC

    Fantastic toy, truly a little jewel.
    Hullo Colleague, I have understood you prefere the T/C rifles than the H&R ones: well, I have to admit the T/C seem very well built. I am to curious about the T/C G2 Contender, it seems a very portable rifle; the AbleAmmo website says it's heavy just 5 1/4 lbs, do you think this information to be correct?
    Many thanks and best regards from Italy

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  10 лет назад

      guerrierodelgiaguaro-weight depends on the diameter of the barrel you are getting and the caliber also. The TCs set up as rifles are no heavier than any other like sized rifle. My TC is the minimum length short rifle setup and it is very portable and the weight with scope is still very handy - I haven't weighed it, but I don't want a feather light rifle if I'm using 300 grain reloads. As for the H&R - they are a fine value and I wouldn't mind having those - the triggers are no where as nice as the TC, though - just a bit more to get used to... Best to ya in Italy...

      Jon - Thanks for the question - It's under 5 pounds, but I'll have to weigh it. Certainly, if I put say a Weaver 1-3X on it, that would be under 5. Best to ya...

    is that a god dang bushnell sport view on that fine gun?? what are you doing man!!

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  7 лет назад

      tank2449 - That Bushnell scope has a fine field of view, clarity and a sharp reticle. There was a day that Bushnell had good reputations amongst the gun writers. It works fine and holds up. I have a Burris 2-7X that I could put on there, but no need at this time. Whenever there's a need to replace it for any reason, that will be easily done. For a gun to be used out to effective range of 75 yards, that scope is simply fine. Best Regards to ya, FC

      I own about three bushnell sport views. one came with a winchestor model 70 7mm. its seems like a good scope for the era is came out of. Ill defiantly put it on a 22lr or something. For me its Leopold. My dad had the exact same scope as i have and what you have on his 338 win mag for awhile before he bought a higher end scope and it never had a single issue. its a good scope. some people are scope or rifle snobs. its it works why change it!

      joelopezj128 - Problem is finding TCs on the used gun market ( they are there, but most TC owners have multiple calibers, so selling the whole shebang is an individual thing and other shooters may not like the calibers we have - and the owner may very well have a caliber that will be kept). Best to ya...

    Just for the record shooting a couple jacketed bullets after you have been shooting the lead ones does NOT clean the lead out .It just flattens the lead out and makes it look clean . It isn't though and in fact it makes it hard to get out ... I have done a lot of casting and testing of lubes to know this. And after "choreboying" this clean looking barrel you can see the lead flakes. (Although a just couple passes doesn't do the job as quick once it has been flattened)Not cleaning it properly of course can raise pressures, destroy accuracy, and excessive leading can even bulge some of the lighter barrels a few thousands.

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  9 лет назад

      thefreese1 I know this is a controversial point and have heard the "ironing" effect of JHPs on leaded barrels. Perhaps the finish of our gun barrels might explain why one shooter finds flakes and another shooter doesn't. We go by what works for us and others might or might not experience the same. For me, I have seen the difference between the light leading I get from shooting sessions of cast bullets, the work I have to do to clear that so my barrel looks clean compared to what I get when I shoot a couple of cylinderfuls of JHPs through my guns after my cast bullets...just a lot less work to get the clean look. And leading is umistakeable - it can be seen in whatever form it takes. Although it would not pass assay, if the barrel looks clean, that is good to put the gun away. I know the Choreboy trick and the Lewis Lead Remover, but have never needed to use them. As you note, safe and accurate shooting validates our procedures. The shooting accuracy of my guns in succeeding range sessions satisfies me that my procedures are more than OK - not necessarily perfect. How do I know my guns and ammo are shooting properly? I don't need to shoot groups from sandbags. I call every shot I take and if the bullet is where I know it should be on the target, I'm happy. Shooters are among the most persnickety of all people - invariably they want to be happy. I know that you are happy with your experiences and that is good. I don't just shoot JHP magnums to "clear my gun" but also to note the performance and POI of my JHP loads and keep muscle memory of shooting them. Thanks for your comments - I'm in the "blast 'em clean" group and you are in the "no ironing" bunch. That's all OK - I celebrate and wish you continued joy and good shootin' to ya

    • @thefreese1
      @thefreese1 9 лет назад

      FortuneCookie45LC will agree, that a well lapped barrel does indeed keep the leading down...like I said...I cast a lot...and played with a lot of lubes.....came up with several good recipes to keep the barrel lead free...but if it shows leading...it's there...I have seen some pretty impressive barrels that were so shiney you'd swear they were clean....but beware ,once flatten sometimes even the lewis lead remover will skip right over it ...especially if it has oil in the barrel or super soft cast bullet lube was used...in that case you have to soak it down with a good lead solvent and let it sit...forcing cones can still be a bitch...yup everyone has their own idea...still all in all nice ,informative video with a good like at that particular stock set up....

    • @FortuneCookie45LC
      @FortuneCookie45LC  9 лет назад

      thefreese1 OK, it's the insidious lead, the lead that hides from detection. I'm sure that every one of my guns would assay out with lead in the barrel to some degree. It's too bad we don't have those electric lead removers anymore...probably some toxic stuff in the solutions. But with those, we just plug it in and overnight, the job is done. I should have gotten that when they were the thing - I just never had any bad leading problems to deal with... Best Regards...

      @@FortuneCookie45LCHere's a 8 yr backup
      Playing with a Lot lubes and speeds is the trick ...I used my best recipe for lube ..
      I then load a bunch of rounds with increasing speeds ....10 rounds per each FPS load .
      And purposely shoot until it leads up .. I then know my max speed .. Keep in mind I ONLY shoot Keith bullets I've casted using my own mix and lube....

  • @thafreeze2182
    @thafreeze2182 7 лет назад

    you are not correct about firing a jacketed bullet to clean up the barrel... this is an old myth....If there is leading visible before you shoot that jacketed bullet it does not clean the barrel... all it is doing is flattening out the lead to the point to where it looks nice and shiny... if you have a leading problem you should run a piece of chore boy or scrub it out with a lead solvent first ..or you can eventually get a buildup that will be very tough to remove.....and depending on the calibre, some experts claim it can raise pressures in loads that use powder that is known to spike at certain pressure levels....
