Evil West was a refreshingly straitforward, linear action game. Even the hokiness of the dialogue and the ridiculous character designs were super nostalgic. I loved it!
Agreed. Played that as the monthly PS+ Essential freebie recently. Great time. I’m ordinarily not a big Western or vampire fan, but for whatever reason, the mashup of the two was a ton of fun.
And here I am wondering why you played every single ubisoft game if you think they are all the "same”. Wondering what's so magical about ubisoft games right now.
2 more mentions: 1. The Nexomon games. Play similar to the old school Pokemon games, but with a better story, better music, fixing issues in Pokemon games that still exist (like the trade evolution, Nexomon doesn’t have them), and adding a few little extras that help (like telling you at which level your creature evolves, if it evolves at all). 2. Both the Yooka-Laylee games. One plays like an old school 3D platformer, while the other plays like an old school 2D platformer. Both are really fun, whether you play casually or go for completion.
Sea of stars such a good game. I’ve never played a JRPG before but I managed to get into top 50 for first platinum trophy. Couldn’t put the controller down
I would say Kena - Bridge Of Spirits would fit into this list 🙂Gameplay wise to me for some reason it has such an amazing old school, classic Action-Adventure game vibe, like Spyro. Loved every minute of it for this reason! ...also of course it's very beautiful and challenging 🥰
Why tf do little fangirls say "thanks for mentioning xxxx game"? You don't own the game nor do you make any money from them. Just a fangirl without a cause
This video has been sitting in my browser for a few days, so I am late to the party. However, had to comment to say I am glad Signalis got some love. Really enjoyed that game. I got it on the Switch and recently got it for the PS5 because it was so good.
Carrion was another one which felt and looked very old-school but had modern controls. Picked that up cos you guys mention it all the time and I wasn't dissapointed
TMNT Shredder's Revenge is currently my favorite game and I'm always happy when you guys bring it up!!! As a speedrunner of the game I wish it was more popular in the aspect.
Another game to mention is Pseudoregalia, a short 3d metroidvania in the style of N64. It revolves around the movement abilities that you collect, and it feels a lot like Mario 64 except it requires a bit more precision. $6 on steam.
Honestly this list is amazing and I totally agree with soo many of thses picks however another one that should be on this list is a Hat in time. As its just a very simple, mission based 3D platformer like Mario 64 and stuff.
I felt like Xenoblade chronicles did to rpgs what BG3 did to CRPGs. That type of a unique worldbuilding from Japan was completely revived by that game in an age where everyone was trying to make high budget fps games.
A good idea for a video is ways that newer games incorporate old genres into them, Such as ff7 rebirth/remake kind of incorporates turn based with the combat
Hey guys! I really like this video and I don't get the chance to play a lot of new games so this list is full of stuff I'd be into. I would love a part 2 and I bet a lot of other people would too!
Just to add to the list. I just got Crystal Project on my Switch and it’s a great old school Final Fantasy style game. Story is not trying to be anything special, but the gameplay is straight up old school FF. Great stuff
The Ps5 plays all 3,454 Ps4 game titles made so that is good enough to keep me busy. Any great Ps3 and Ps2 games were remastered for the Ps4 a long time ago.
@@danman6669 ummmmmmm actually I don't know if you know this but it depends on where your from armored is for the states armour is for the rest of the world but I shouldn't be telling you this the almighty google should have the answers you seek
Sea of Stars is a decently fun game, but the writing is not even close to anything like Chrono Trigger. It is actually kind of wild how many of these new games inspired by SNES RPGs lack in that aspect.
11:54 I would also put the infamous Scott Pilgrim Vs the World: The Game here as well. It is a true masterpiece with the art style, the color, the tight gameplay(The superior PS3 version of course), and of course...the FANTASTIC instrumental chiptune music.
It was in the intro but not the video, but Metroid Dread was AMAZING. I never played a metroid game before it, or even a 2D sidescroller, but that game was so good it singlehandedly got me into the franchise and genre ❤ hyped to play Lost Crown too cos it reminds me of Dread
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is underrated. It feels like butter to play, keeps it fresh with constantly giving you new powers and has a pretty hard difficulty curve with the boss fights. Even on medium, it wasn’t an easy game. If you like metroidvania’s, especially games like Ori, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.
I bought Sea of Stars because of this list and it is amazing. Could you consider doing a list specially for smaller story driven games that hit a home run?
Hi-Fi Rush! It feels like an old school platformer, but for the modern era! Most underrated game out there. Would recommend 100/10. Also Shredders Revenge is incredible with a friend or two!
Speaking of great beat them ups one that oftens goes under the radar is Fight 'N Rage, it looks great, has amazing soundtrack and is a eqasy to control hard to master kind of game. It is hella cheap, has a ton of content to unlock to boot, highly recommend ir if you like Streets of Rage 4 or Shredder;s Revenge.
I did enjoy Crash Bandicoot 4. Trying to complete is a pain, but I hope a Crash Bandicoot 5 will be a thing. Along with a possible Spyro 4. Shredder's Revenge is also great fun, especially when six players are playing.
@@HUYI1 I just wanted to say "but we still at least got games like injustice 2" - then I realized that it's almost 7 years old already. Who knows, there might be some games coming tho, I've recently been surprised by the amount of rogue like FPS that got recommended to me by steam which are fairly new - so I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing happens with some fighting games in a year or so
One to add to the list: Unicorn Overlord. This one immediately made me feel like I was playing a beefed up SNES game, especially when comparing it to Ogre Battle. Hell, the creator of Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, and Final Fantasy Tactics - Yasumi Matsuno - has been gushing over Unicorn Overlord, so it seems there has to be some like-minded connection there.
Seven: the days long gone is an extremely old school GEM. Nobody explains nothing, it looks unique, gameplay is a bit clunky sometimes. It's an stealth openworld rpg with a giant map with no loading screens, tons of quests, no fun mechanics, but in a good way, unique artstyle that looks like if borderlands and old fallout games had an ugly baby. And my favorite feature is that your character can climb almost anywhere. If it looks like climable rock or pipe or wall you can go there and explore the game the way you want it))
I recently played Armored Core PS1 and PS2. When i saw Armored Core VI gameplay, it feel like true OG Armored Core PS1 and PS2, just a little bit more like a Gundam but more Armored Core due of this customization system and the gameplay of this game. FromSoftware are so CONSISTENT and REALLY CARE about their successor and their community. Man! God bless FromSoftware and Miyazaki!
Haven't played Signalis, but there's another game that is very similar called Crow Country and it also looks and plays like one of those PS1 survival horror games, definitely check out the demo. But my personal nomination goes to Unicorn Overlord - the game is absolutely unbelievable, and proves once and for all that the Strategy RPG is far from dead.
One of my all time favorite games has always been Dungeon Fighter Online. And seeing Shredder's Revenge and Streets of Rage makes me wish we had a (decent) console version of DFO.
If I may give a recommendation to anyone seeing this who likes old school classic JRPGs like the older Final Fantasy games. I just recently played through Chained Echoes wich was made mainly by one person and even if I wouldn't have known it was from one guy I still have to say this game slaps. From the really well made turn based combat, to the high quality sprite works, the music and and especially the grandiose story is just amazing. For 25€ this is a steal, but in the current Steam Sale it is reduced to 18,50€ in Germany. Can't recommend this game more. 🙏
Getting 100 percent in Crash 4 is actually fun. The issue is in getting 106 percent. The devs corrupted the time trials with a nonsensical spin move, and they added a completion requirement from Crash 1 to finish levels with all boxes without dying, completely forgetting why Naughty Dog removed it when developing Crash 2.
Game Grumps have been playing Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore on there channel. I really love there Zelda CDI playthroughs. There the ones to show me that these games exist and Arin is crazy enough to get through them properly.
Evil West was a refreshingly straitforward, linear action game. Even the hokiness of the dialogue and the ridiculous character designs were super nostalgic. I loved it!
That wa corny hence why it was talked about for a weekend
I really enjoyed it too. Total PS2 game and I love it for that
I keep forgetting that game existed.
Agreed. Played that as the monthly PS+ Essential freebie recently. Great time. I’m ordinarily not a big Western or vampire fan, but for whatever reason, the mashup of the two was a ton of fun.
LOL game was hot trash. We beat it and yelled “NEXT!” while laughing
What about Ubisoft? Every single game they make plays exactly like the games they made 15 years ago
You could say that about mostly every game company
And here I am wondering why you played every single ubisoft game if you think they are all the "same”. Wondering what's so magical about ubisoft games right now.
Oh shut up, they make games more than many companies combined
@@PaulAtreidees You're supporting his argument bro, the games are copy paste with new skins on top.
I would love it if Ubisoft made a game on par to the original Ghost Recon or Rainbow 6.
2 more mentions:
1. The Nexomon games. Definitely trying Sea of Stars, never tried many RPGS before, should be good 😊 Keep the recommendations coming Gameranx🙏
Sea of stars such a good game. I’ve never played a JRPG before but I managed to get into top 50 for first platinum trophy. Couldn’t put the controller down
I've been having a blast playing the Destroy All Humans remakes. They feel like old school Pandemic. Love to all GR crew.
PoP reminds me of the very first Prince of Persia. It was a side scroller with traps . This one is ultra modern, 2.5D, more colorful and fast.
I was waiting for someone to acknowledge this
Signalis was PHENOMENAL
I would say Kena - Bridge Of Spirits would fit into this list 🙂Gameplay wise to me for some reason it has such an amazing old school, classic Action-Adventure game vibe, like Spyro. Loved every minute of it for this reason! ...also of course it's very beautiful and challenging 🥰
I played that game. It was boring to me.
Kena is VERY like Jak & Daxter, same moveset, similar artstyle, shared voice actor.
Same here, actually named my daughter Kena
Surprisingly challenging! For the way that game looks and plays moment to moment, some bosses felt like a difficulty spike.
@@OmegaSpider227 I absolutely agree! For someone who usually plays on the higher difficulties, I had to turn it down 😅
I think Blasphemous deserve a place on this list, maybe for a part two video!!
This is one of the best lists from Gamerax

I know you put a metroidvania game already on here but Metroid Dread deserves a mention, the game is a masterpiece

Lots and lots of amazing games here!
Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is amazing.
Indeed.

The nostalgia of playing older games will never be matched, its so pleasing! 🔥

So many good titles in the list. Cassette Beasts and TMNT Shredders Revenge were my favorites to find that nostalgic feel.
I absolutely loved Sea of Stars. Beautiful game, only wish there were more Sea of Stars
Old School + Modern=Nostalgia! Awesome list! 🎉

Cassette beasts is cool, but IMO Coromon is a much closer and improved version of the Pokémon sprite based formula
Already platinumed the list crown. Amazing!
Sorry, lost crown
Isn't the newest Prince of Persia drawing on the 2nd side scroller 90s original rather than the Sands of Time?
yep, i said exactly that, it is 👍🏿
Cyberpunk feels like a blast in the past. No begging for more money after buying the main product.
You mean before or after the returns or the over a year it took to get it playable. Yep super old school 😂😂
I felt like Xenoblade chronicles did to rpgs what BG3 did to CRPGs. That type of a unique worldbuilding from Japan was completely revived by that game in an age where everyone was trying to make high budget fps games.

Shredders revenge is deceitfully fun, played with my wife we both were kinda put off by the load up screen but instantly started having fun

I've been playing the Tomb Raider remastered trilogy. It really hits that PS1 era nostalgia so well
Phwoar! Commandos! Spent my childhood on those games. What a throwback

The probelm I find is a lot of modern games try to be a mash up of loads of different genres. Pick on thing and do it well!
Hopefully these old school gaming formulas will never die, much like (insert Transformers joke here).
