I try do every side quests but obviously if a game is dull, or every one them is a fetch quest then I'm likely to nope out.
Skyrim would be a bad example for me. I've done every single quest in that game, including all the romance ones even for the characters I've no interest in romancing. Loads of them are fetch quests but I just wanted a slight purpose to just keep existing in the world.

Similar situation, but I'm not exactly comfortable leaving things in games unfinished. That said, I often do, simply because I don't have the time to finish them before something that intrigues me more comes along.
My favorite games are definitely ones that are relatively short, but offer a huge amount of ways _how_ to finish them. Like how, say, many roguelikes do. As a narrative slut though, I wish there were more RPGs like that as well. I probably don't have the time to finish a 300-hour campaign, but I'll finish a 12-hour campaign multiple times if the game's good and there's any new story to see.

Collectathons, escort missions and senseless achievements/trophies. Nothing is MOOOOOORE boring than having to collect 200+ feathers scattered throughout a game, having to escort an NPC over and over and over (especially when they're programmed to literally walk through a battlefield where they only stop because they've been shot dead or to trigger some massive wave of enemies yet don't duck for cover) and trophies that INSIST you do the former 100000000000+ times, or log 900+ hours to achieve or worse "be ranked in the top 10% in PVP).
Sir, if I WANTED to play PvP, I wouldn't have bought a single player experience that was specifically built for a single player experience. If I WANTED PvP, I'd be playing Fortnite, Valorant or APEX.

It occurs to me, that I should give an explanation as to who to assign where
The likelihood of your crewmates (by which I mean Tali, Jack, Miranda, etc) surviving the final mission is based on two things. A hidden "points" value and where you assign them. Garrus and Zaeed for instance have the highest combat score, and each crewmember gets an additional point if you've completed their loyalty quest. So when picking for the second team leader, always pick either Zaeed or Garrus. When picking who will go through the vents, pick either Tali or Legion, as they have the highest tech scores (on my first playthrough I picked Thane. Made sense at the time but...). When picking who will form the biotic barrier, pick either Jack or Samara/Morinth. When picking who will escort the survivors of the rest of the crew, pick either Mordin or Jacob, as they have the lowest scores of all the crewmembers and will be among the first to die if assigned elsewhere if they are either disloyal or you picked the wrong team leader

  • @L-kun

I left the wedding quest in TESV Skyrim unfinished because I wanted to see how many NPCs I could get to show up. Since if you didn't know, depending on the quests you've completed, NPCs from those quests would come to take a look at who is the lucky person to marry you.

Both Horizon Zero Dawn & Horizon Forbidden West are actually pretty good examples of expansion DLC. For one, Frozen Wilds is completely optional, but does require a certail level of experience to stand a chance against the new machines. While Burning Shores, it just appears after you've beaten the main game. Doesn't matter if you just beat it, or you already did. You just get a notification & go to the designated area to start it!
Sonic Frontiers: The Final Horizon, again, pops up right in the endgame. So you can do either ending. But it does have issues regarding difficulty, which has since been toned down. While the King Koko trial is still pretty difficult without cheesing it via difficulty settings before starting the next phase.

The feathers in AC 2 are actually good and I will die on that hill. The reason Ezio collects them is because he's grieving. It's his way of mourning his little brother. It makes perfect narrative sense.
The amount of feathers isn't bad either and they're divided into districts so they're easier to find.
If you want collectibles done badly just look at the other AC games. In Assassin's Creed 1 there were an obscene amount of flags to collect. They're was no narrative reason to and they weren't divided into little districts. If you missed one you had to comb through the entire city to find it.
Not to mention the ridiculous amount of collectibles in the Far Cry games. I just don't understand the feather hate when it's one of the only collectible quests that makes sense.
You are right about Arkham Knight though.

Number 7: HAH, jokes on you, I LOVE building and decorating my house in games. I find it really adds to the game when my character has a place to return to after a long adventure and just rest, do some decorating or yard work, engage with animals or possible spouses/children and when adventure calls, I'll be off again. To me, it really adds to my immersion and I love using creative ways to decorate or build stuff or bring back rare items (that I don't use) to put up as decoration. It really helps to ground me and sometimes even to "mentally prepare" for another adventure/questline etc.

Same, I've sunk many hours into building mode just for the sake of it.
Starting early gives the benefit of knowing what to look for and seeing it evolve over time.
AND unlike many others, I don't end up having to rush through it when it turns out it's required for whatever reason(achievements/quests/etc)

Seriously though, Phillip Strenger is arguably one of the most _real_ side characters in any rpg I've ever played. His character development within that quest line is both compelling and believable. He's not some sort of caricature of a medieval lord, he has so many layers and ups and downs. I was genuinely hoping throughout the rest of my playthrough that he'd reappear at some point.

Loved this video ! It's so refreshing to hear someone saying "you don't need to 100% / 1000G / Platinum" a game... The main thing is to HAVE FUN !
Secret/ alternative endings are OK, but the TRUE ending only appears if you do something optional is absurd ( Arkham Knight and Prince of Persia Two Thrones are the ones I'm remembering...).

In RPGs especially JRPGs (Japanese RPGs) where you grind for levels, unlocking or learning new skills and magic, farming items including equipment materials for upgrading or creating new equipment especially the ultimate weapons is one of the few things gamers do in single player games and I’m also one of them apparently.

Ive always thought it would be cool to have a side quest system where, if you dont pursue/complete a side quest you have started after quite some time has passed. It gets completed on its own, if that makes sense.
For example, say you DO finally go to a dungeon to rescue a villagers daughter etc. Then, once you get to the end, they arent there. You then go to the questgiver and they tell you they were tired of waiting and paid another party to do it. Or they freak out on you, as they received word that their daughter was killed by the bandits that took them or some such. Would make for a more lively world while also encouraging player engagement with side quests.

As an borderline obsessive completionist I pretty don't leave things undone in singleplayer games.
However, housing in games is dumb and if it's not required for an achievement or something...I will proceed to ignore it forever in every game.
P.S. - Yes, the Bloody Baron side questline is so good it's staggering to me. That quest, and being "just" a side quest, is what made me realize what an incredible ride I was in for with Witcher 3. A game so good that the developers will likely never live up to the hype it's created for their future projects.
