Saw Suede in Philadelphia on this tour & got to meet them backstage. It was a fantastic show even though it was sparsely attended in winter and was one of Richard's very first shows. Impressive! And nice guys too. They'd just made one of my favorite albums of all time!
Together with the Pet Shop Boys' Introspective, which was also released on October 10, this album is my all-time favorite. If they traded songs with their B-Sides from that era, Dog Man Star would be even better.
@racephase nooooo! No lol I can see what ya mean feel like black or blue is probably the least liked song on there I really like it though for some reason.
It wasn't even recorded during the album sessions. They chose to release it long before they even started making Dog Man Star. It doesn't belong. You can't just stick any old b-side on an album.
So true, what Brett says about Still Life being ruined by the massively over-blown 'widescreen epic' / Western nonsense. The acoustic version on the 'Naked City' clip has ten times the power. But hey, all part of the learning process of course. I'm surprised there's so little talk about 'The Two of Us' - easily my favourite track on 'DMS' and the most intriguing as well as elegant song on the album.
This Hollywood Life and The Asphalt World are my least favourite songs on DMS, but still good. Interesting how Brett saw Asphalt as an anchor to the album. Its atmospheric, powerful and good lyrics, but musically I find it drags a bit. The Power, Heroine, Still Life, The Wild Ones and The Two of Us are all absolutely brilliant in terms of musicality. I also think the granduer of the orchestra on Still Life makes the album unique in the context of the album and the time. Overall, though, it's a rare album for me in that I still play the album without skipping tracks.
Not as interesting as the 2011 interview with Brett and Bernard about DMS. The interviewer was the problem, she seemed intent on getting them to say something controversial.

I disagree. The interviewer had to ask about the tension that existed making the record, and the way she went about it didn’t feel in any way sensationalist. The tension that led to one of its members ultimately leaving isn’t going to be ignored, nor should it be. Brett and Mat may be uncomfortable answering questions regarding it, especially with the amount of time since passed, but that’s tough. It’s a key part of the backdrop to making the album, and the band’s history…
They were pretty good and theatrical… harmonically they’re extremely boring and no Neil does not have good orchestration because he doesn’t have an ear harmonically… and neither does the orchestras that they’re working with because they’re not really good composers. They’re OK but harmonically they’re not advanced…. And even if you go to a music school, not everybody has an ear for harmonics there harmonics are not modern and it’s no wonder they like people like Kate Bush and David Bowie even though some of them had a good material, they’re also not advanced harmonically…. Which can be very boring for real musician that’s not an amateur…. Some people are more professional than others, but Brett was humble enough to admit the truth that his music sounds amateurs. Why don’t they admit that Kate Bush often sounds amateurish as she hired about 100 million people to basically plan her record she could barely plan instrument and yes, her harmonics are very boring and the country of England is stagnating because of an entertainment industry. That’s not a real music industry… no it’s nice if you want some light entertainment they have a little bit of creativity here and there, but this is not what modern music should be it’s stagnating, because of a group of people who know nothing about singing, writing nothing to do with composition nothing to do with serious music it’s an entertainment field. This meant to be a business to make money for people and they’re caught in the delusion now we need to do something about these people because they’re continuing to raking money while they don’t take anywhere musically, or artistically. .. they felt that they were taking music somewhere. They thought they were being invent inventive, but really is devolution that’s going on here and they are taking music nowhere nowhere where it needs to be OK not harmonically not acoustically not anything they don’t know anything about music these people, though they have some innate talent. This woman doesn’t know anything about music I could tell that because singing is not about being strong the singing is about having diversity and being able to have a lot of control. No, he doesn’t have a lot of control. He doesn’t know what chiaroscuro is. He doesn’t know anything about singing, though he has talent he’s not telling us it’s just people who are not only not trained they don’t want to know anything this is all a business so they can make money and that’s always about and talk about porno , there are people that are addicted to culture. There are people that are addicted to culture music and art the way people are addicted to porn. … these people are definitely not addicted to music, and you could tell that by that the superficiality in their conversation.

The first two albums for me are Suede, after Bernard left they kinda became a different band, maybe they should have changed their name?
True!!

What in the name of God are you talking about
@@aloysiusthefish7076I was wondering the very same.
