Weirdly enough, out of the so-called Brit pop era, these are the two bands I still listen to today. Both Brett and James are fabulously funny, comfortable in their own skin and very talented in their field. Top interview.
2024 will also marked the 30 years anniversary of The Holy Bible and Dog Man Star, both my favourite albums of the bands. Ideally I'm hoping they'll play those albums in it's entirety or at least playing lots of songs from those albums
Can't wait. I live in Glasgow. Saw the Manics at Isle of White Festival. Stunning! Practically every track was a hit! Blown away with Motorclye Emptyness second song. However, and there is no hyperbole here. The last two minutes of IF YOU Tolerate This.... when they let the crowd take over was LITERALY ( an abused word but I mean literally when I say literally) was the best couple of minutes of my life. 5000 people in that big top became one. Every last soul was.jumping up and down. Well, I'm so delighted to say I am going to Edinburgh Castle Esplanade and Londons Alexander Park next July. It was a toss up.between Dublin and London but I'm a Manics man. And Manics start in Dublin but are 2nd in Edinburgh and London. So Suede are simply a decent warm up.act for me.
The Holy Bible. Not played that for about 20 years. Great record but tough to listen to. Might dig out the cd today and bang it on the hifi. However, 1994- what a time to be alive (I was 17 at the time).
🐇 Just one more thing: Did anyone heard what James said about the Manics fans? He calls them THE KEEPERS OF THE FLAME. Anybody noticed how remarkable this statement is to the audience? It's very poetic and by the way it's a wonderful analogy for the fact that an artist can only exist with the audience. Its a kind of compliment. There is so much meaning in this term. All the consistency that the fans have shown over the years... it's so rare in this world that an artist shows such sincere respect to the audience. But then he's called the anti-frontman just because he doesn't touch the crowd all the time. I think he touches the crowd in a different way - in a very honest way. Its a wonderful gift to be grateful for. It can't be ignored. Thank you 🙏
He's been way much more of a frontman in the past 15 years or so than he was in the early days. Back then he'd barely acknowledge us except for the occasional "this one's called..." Or "thank you" 😂
He dares to do! At least he could have kneeled in front of you 😂 But isn't it acknowledgement enough for the audience as long as the artist really goes for it? I got T-shirts with "This one's called..." The signature announcement ... 😘 ARS GRATIA ARTIS 🐇
@@MelD1404 😂 it never bothered me with bands having huge interaction with the fans. I'm there to hear their tunes not have a conversation. I wasn't complaining, just stating my observance.

James seems like a really nice bloke. Of course he's Welsh, which probably explains it!
Seriously? Often a bad idea to venture West from Chester train station. I suppose the South Welsh, like him, are friendlier.
Saw them both last week in Singapore. Impeccable performances!! Honestly I kind of underestimate the venue because it's indoor-seated theater, but OMG the audio was beyond my expectation! Kudos, Star Theater! It was my first time watching Manics, and my second Suede concert after exactly 20 years (!). I got teared up on couple of songs. Definitely would love to watch them again
Both was amazing that night! i was there as well , but throwing the flower for Suede, Brett was giving 100% and not taking it with audience with phones on the front row that night . Love both of the bands !
@kiri4341 couldn't agree more! He's like a rubber ball, bouncing here and there giving his 110%, and he's almost 60 y.o!! 😦

Fantastic interview. And a fantastic pairing of bands. Never really put much thought into Suede being the first 'Brit Pop' band, but when you look back, I guess they were.
Manics, at the time, were very far away from BP, but have adapted.
Its an interesting collaboration for a tour, and certain venues and parts of the country (or world) will lend itself to either band headlining and the other supporting
Cardiff and Edinburgh for example, stone cold manics headline. London based gigs lend themselves much more to a Suade headline
I imagine it's nice for both the bands and the techs/crew to alternate a bit too

I think there was a general overlap of fans between the Manics and Suede, The Holy Bible and Dog Man Star both being exceptional albums of 1994. I think I have all the albums by both bands although I've never seen Suede live.
And I remember the first time around when they toured in '94, I was only 12 but I still remember 🙈😂

I was there at the los angeles show last year, it was amazing. Got to meet them outside after the show. I told neil about how much I appreciate his songwriting skills such as "Digging a hole" and he said "not a lot of people point that song out"... made me happy. Suede is just too good. Not a big Manic street preachers fan but this interview makes me appreciate them.
I love both bands and i am very fond of brett anderson.

For me it was never Oasis vs Blur (an invention of the press), my nineties were Manics - Suede. And on the other side of the pond Pavement.
Cos you're so different
It was all of them for me, although the Manics were my first band I truly loved (no pun intended) Oasis were everything I needed when they came along as those few years prior were far too intense and often dark. The Manics were an unbelievable but tragic ride along the way that you could get very easily become obsessed with due to their art and philosophy on the world. Oasis were the few years of cheering up and bringing out my shell I needed as a young teenager 😂

Did Brett Anderson just take credit for creating Brit pop? There was a time when he says he hated the term. Weird. Anyway, Damon Albarn created it when he wrote Modern Life is Rubbish.
Think you'll find most journalists would cite Suede as the pioneers. And they're by far the better band

Writers at NME and Melody Maker invented Britpop.
Blur's first album, Leisure, wasn't Britpop. Suede's first album was March 1993. Modern Life is Rubbish was May 1993.
Suede, 1st britpop band? Blur formed and released their first album a year or 2 before them? ??
yes but suede were the first to do “britpop music,” (in the sense of the movement) blurs music before wasn’t really considered britpop. i guess suede started the conversation
@@sophielou2929 Suede 'blew up' before Blur though. Yes Blur were around but they didn't really make much of an impact, they were out in the US touring but wasn't much of a success. Then there was the 'Melody Maker' front cover 'The best new band in Britain' which was in 1992. Blur's success came with 'Parklife' which was 1994
Blur started out as trying to be like The Stone Roses.

Modern life is Rubbish was the first Britpop album..it had 3 or 4 hits which were top 30

Others will no doubt feel the same about Suede. Enjoy your favourites and open your mind, you might just find that you enjoy Suede too

They're one of those bands where I really liked their singles and whenever I'd hear the odd album track, yet still never somehow bought their stuff ? The Manics on the other hand...🤯😂

Biggest difference between these two. Suede had 1-2 hits, Manics had albums full of hit tunes. No comparison, Suede ain’t good enough to even support the Manics.

Ridiculous. Suede had shed loads of hits. Coming Up in '96 had 5 top ten hits alone.
Manics biggest hit singles/albums were between 1996 and 1999. Suede had hits constantly from 1994 until 1999. Manics managed to get a hit in late 00s from Send Away the Tigers. Suede have managed to have successful album releases since reuniting (music industry is different now to 90s). Think your comment is off the mark.
Suede were terrible. So many great Britpop bands but they were nowhere near that level. OCS, Cast, Oasis and the Verve were different league to Suede.
