Of particular brilliance is how diverse the album is. Each song is different than the one that came before. I kind of take that as Chris' Beatles influence, with something as diverse and expansive as The White Album.

Thanks for including 'Talk' by Yes. A much overlooked gem and redeems this line-up from the 'Big Generator' mess. The band sounds hungry and everyone is on their game. Hell, Alan is beating the crap out the drums more so than any other Yes album. It's powerful and dynamic with moments of sheer beauty. Way more timeless than their 80's albums. It could've been cut yesterday.

A little surprised to find out that Steven hasn't put much attention to Blur. These would not be albums featured the year we're focusing on, but precisely the follow-up albums to Parklife ("Blur" and "13") are to me, the ones that truly show their creativity and musicality beyond that "playful britpop war" esthetic.

Parklife - despite selling gazillions of copes - still doesn’t get the acclaim I think it deserves. The songwriting, performances (particularly from Graham Coxon who puts in an absolute tour de force), production and sense of playfulness lift it far beyond its place in time. Elements of XTC, Dr Feelgood, synth pop and even prog rock (“This is a Low”)… Blur were always far ahead of their supposed competitors and this album is their peak.

Brave is close to being my favourite album of all time, I find it immersive in a way that no other album quite achieves for me, but I would agree that it could lose a couple of tracks in the middle. I think, growing up with the vinyl format that necessarily broke up music into bite sized pieces, I found I often didn't make it to the end of albums on cd, and I thought the quality of albums was often diluted by excessive length.

Interesting note about the Talk album by Yes -- That was one of the first prog records I'd heard as a child and is very much one of my 'formative years' albums. Later in my teenage years, it was because of this album that I discovered Porcupine Tree since I was searching for more music that has a similar sound, and was recommended Lightbulb Sun by somebody. Learning now that Steven only recently heard the album for the first time is kind of blowing my mind!

I agree with his summary of Oasis. They took elements of the Beatles, Slade, T-Rex, Sex Pistols and created something new but familiar with it. There was definitely a gap in the market for a band to fuse those things together and they did it really well.

My son and I experienced it. I am roughly your age, Steven. My son (26 now) turned me on to you when he was a teen. I am forever grateful and am such a fan - of you both. Anyway, it was amazing to see and hear those songs. Steve Vai and Danny Carey were amazing and kept a perfect balance of being true to the "role" of Robert and Bill - and were totally themselves at the same time. I did see the Thrak tour so I did get to see/hear that iteration (double trio). Just wanted to share. Love you both!

So true that some ground-breaking bands can end up having their impact muted in the long-term by spawning legions of imitators, This is clearly the case with Portishead (Sneaker Pimps, Morcheeba,Moloko , Zero 7,zzz...) and Siouxsie and the Banshees( 99% of allGoth Bands).Perhaps the worst affected were Kraftwerk, who found that by their last great Album "Computer Love" they'd pretty much been imitated by most of the music world from Madonna to Depeche Mode, the entirety of early Hip Hop/Electro and on past Acid House to infinity. Only two mediocre releases in 20 years, they'd clearly been overwhelmed by others feasting on their genius.

Portishead! I became and stayed a big Portishead fan (love Beth Gibbons' new LIVES OUTGROWN album). Interestingly, I find Portishead's THIRD album as my current favorite of theirs. Got into Massive Attack a bit and Oasis (a little less), as well. Bought them all - in the day. Have repurchased all of Portishead's music on vinyl in recent years. Love a lot of the music from Future Sound of London! I have to say that I noticed that I became less and less a "rock" music fan from this point onwards. Rock had been my staple but it less & less appealed to me from this point - maybe from late 80s onwards. To encourage you: I DO spend as much time as possible "listening" to music properly with headphones in my comfy chair armed with organic dark roast coffee in my vinyl room. Agree with your assessment of CDs, as a medium, becoming incredibly "bloated" albums which lost all sense of cohesion and, at times, quality. Thank you Steven & Tim for all of these really enjoyable (and educational!) podcasts in 2024! Love your thoughts on music. You ended up introducing me to lots of music which I ended up purchasing (Goldfrapp, Neu!, etc.), primarily on vinyl. I appreciate that you talk about lesser known music (often overlooked) which deserves a little more attention. Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and continued "The Album Years" podcasts!

Enjoying the show and love you guys but if the mission statement is to highlight lesser known albums, I don't think starting with the more famous albums in this live context with more limited time is a good idea. Kristin Hersh deserved some praise up at the front and Oasis should have got a passing mention. Also great: Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse, Frank Black - Teenager Of The Year, Lush - Split, Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand, Faith And The Muse - Elyria, This Ascension - Walk Softly A Dream Lies Here, Cranes - Loved, Rise And Fall Of A Decade - You Or Sidney. Incredible year for music.

Great to hear the comments about Superunknown. It looks like my suspicions were confirmed about some of the other popular bands from the Pacific Northwest being ignored (in fact, it seems there was a put-down there being edited, heh). Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains is my favourite EP of all time. Astonishing songwriting, beautiful melodies, and Steven might have (considering his love for the Beach Boys and the way they have influenced his music) appreciated the gorgeous vocal harmonies by Staley and Cantrell. It was also quite of a left-turn after the heaviness of Dirt to put out such a delicate and mostly acoustic record.
Pearl Jam's Vitalogy, outside of some of the great songwriting in the form of Corduroy, Immortality or Nothingman, might just hold one of the biggest fuck-yous to the music industry by a huge mainstream band in the form of Bugs (hilarious) and Stupid Mop (slightly less successful though, as it goes on for a bit too long). Great production values and tremendous grimy energy throughout the whole record. This album was followed by No Code, a very interesting record which is one of those nice little subtle reinventions that would deserve a mention.
Both records seem to be worthy of inclusion, but we cannot agree on all. Love the comments on Massive Attack (it is 100th Window though, not 1000th ;) and Portishead! Agreed on The Division Bell and Definitely Maybe as well. I'd also love to see a comment on Kyuss and Welcome to Sky Valley, one of the definitive stoner rock records.
And if one really wants to go down the rabbit hole and is open to listening to music in a foreign language, check out Pustinje by Laufer. Good stuff.

I'm surprised that Steven liked 'Talk'. I rate it about 6/10, but I know a lot of other prog and Yes fans adore it ('Brave' and 'VROOM' were much better albums). But '94 WAS a good year. As Steven says, there seemed to be a resurgence of 'progressive' music in '94, as well as a serious explosion of new 'Progressive Rock' bands and albums (including this quirky little British thing called Porcupine Tree... hmmm 😉.) I thought they might get to neo-Celtic when they were talking about neo-classical, but obviously not enough time. Clannad's best album in my book -- 'Banba' -- was also released in '94 (as was Loreena McKennitt's 'The Mask and the Mirror'). And I didn't even get into any of the grunge stuff going on at the time, which I figure will happen before I eventually croak.

In the 90s, I was musically still stuck in the 60s, 70s and 80s. I still don't think the decade was so great. There were great albums, of course (and they're, imo, not from the 70s band like Pink Floyd or Yes (I don't like these two albums, what can I say Steven). Whether 94 was a particularly interesting year, is something I would personally doubt. "Dog Man Star" is actually an album from this year that I still like to listen to (more than "Superunknown"), and it has never been loved by the critics. "Monster" also isn't as bad as many see it, but it's between two better R.E.M. albums. All in all, I think a year like 1972 had as many great albums as the entire 90s decade.
