Why We Can’t Ignore the Bible’s Violent Verses | Philip Jenkins

  • Throughout history, believers have used Biblical passages-evocative as and akin to the Sword Verse in the Qur'an-to justify acts of violence and genocide against their enemies. Protestants used those verses against Catholics, and vice versa. The medieval church used the same verses to justify the wars of the Crusades against Muslims and Arab Christians. The same verses were used as recent as 1994 to justify the genocide in Rwanda.
In the latest from Emir-Stein, Philip Jenkins, Distinguished Professor of History & Director of the Program on Historical Studies of Religion at Baylor University, argues that neither the Bible nor the Qur'an is violent per se, nor are the respective faiths of Islam, Judaism, or Christianity. Prof. Jenkins argues that misguided “believers” in each tradition are the real problem. In each case, different groups and individuals at particular times and places cite scripture to justify terrorist and criminal acts. And in so doing, they tragically bring those sacred writings into disrepute.
This video is based on Prof. Jenkins's book Laying Down the Sword : Why We Can't Ignore the Bible's Violent Verses.

*The Context of Quran 9:5 -->*
The verse was revealed in the context when the pagans persecuted the Muslims and took over their lands and homes and made the sacred place is a place of an open idolatry. That's why they were warned and given two options-
1.repent,establish prayer and pay charity to the poor
    2.get out of Arabian peninsula
    - They were given 4 months time. But the next verse also says,
*"And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection* so that he may hear the words of Allah . Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know." (Quran 9:6)

just to clarify war rules in Islam:
In Islam, there are guidelines for war known as "Jihad." Jihad, often misunderstood as solely a military concept, encompasses a broader meaning, including spiritual struggle and striving for a righteous way of life. When it comes to armed conflict, Islamic teachings emphasize principles such as proportionality, avoiding harm to civilians, and providing for the humane treatment of prisoners of war. The conduct during war is expected to adhere to Islamic ethics and respect for human rights.

Yeah, the jihad you're referring to is known as the lesser Jihad. Jihad just means struggle. It has two forms; the greater Jihad, which is an inward struggle against vice, and the lesser Jihad, which is to outward struggle.

Thanks to ISIS, the concept of jihad was completely ruined because of the several war crimes they committed and including bringing in the practice of Slavery back from extinction.

He should've mentioned the disasters that exist in the bible. What's in the bible cannot be described only as violent verese they are pure racial ba rbarity that even the mongols didn't have. I think this a huge reason for the unprecedented ba rbarity of euros in the last couple of centuries both liberal and religious. When you read both of their writings, as humans we can only classify them as less than ani mals. And guess what! they are the same today. We are witnessing that with our own eyes even after signing the UN charter. And since I've mentioned the UN charter invoke article 6 and expel the american ani mals from UN

If you go back and read Surah 9 at-Tawbah (the Repentance) before and after the heavily misquoted verse 5 then what you will find is that this verse was revealed at a very specific time for a very specific situation. It only applied to those who violated the peace treaty at the time of conflict which is a serious offense.
If you misquote and mistranslate verses of the Quran to portray Islam or the Quran as violent, you're no different than the terrorists who do the same thing to justify their acts of terrors.
Here are the first 6 verses of Chapter 9 for those who never read the whole thing. Also, if you've never read the Quran then you have 0 authority to criticize it or Islam. That much should be common sense.
    1. A declaration of immunity from God and His Messenger to the polytheists with whom you had made a *treaty.*
    2. So travel the land for four months, and know that you cannot escape God, and that God will disgrace the disbelievers.
    3. And a proclamation from God and His Messenger to the people on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage, that God has disowned the polytheists, and so did His Messenger. If you repent, it will be better for you. But if you turn away, know that you cannot escape God. And announce to those who disbelieve a painful punishment.
    4. *Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.*
    5. When the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them. And capture them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and perform the prayers, and pay the alms, then let them go their way. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
    6. And if anyone of the polytheists asks you for protection, *give him protection so that he may hear the Word of God; then escort him to his place of safety.* That is because they are a people who do not know.

    To be honest,
In "rewritten" bible it says that whoever is not a christian will enter hellfire
In "rewritten" torah it says whoever is not follower of Musa (peace be upon him) will be in hellfire ot are not people of God
Even in buddhism looks down on other belief system
And Hindu myth speaks of war and even burning the whoke city for a kidnapping done by one person of that city
However, only in Quran it says in chapter 2 verse 62, and many other verses it stresses
That "anyone", from jew or christian or sabaen who is concious of God's existence and their actions to be jugdged by God will enter Heaven
Quran only warns us about people who do t care about conscience or searching and studying existence of ultimate creator of this universe including the wisdom that we possess.. Because these people are threat to the spcieties
And when such immoral and materialistic people attack then we react otheriwse we are asked to respect every religion

The Qur'an verses aren't really that "problematic" as parts of the book give examples of bigotry against the faith, both during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAAS) and prior eras such as the Pharaoh or other enemies of the Israelites. The Quraish (the idol worshippers in Mecca also accused of being harsh to orphans, the poor, Ethiopian slaves, and bad with women), and the Jews of Yathrib helping the former were examples of the enemies in the Qur'an and historical records like Hadith.
The main problem with Muslims today is that some apply some of these verses against just anyone for not being Muslim like Da'esh, or over issues that can be discussed about. Although, I'd also seen people behaving like the biblical and Arabian enemies discussed in the Qur'an as well, especially Right Wingers in Europe and BJP supporters, so there's that too.
Otherwise, a very insightful video given the current events in Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank.

He mentioned Quran 9:5 Surah At-Tawbah. He forgot to mention that you have to read the entire context. The section of the chapter is clearly speaking about broken treaties between nations. During current times if you break a treaty it is a dec. of war.
    1. A (declaration) of immunity from Allah and His Messenger, to those of the pagans with whom you have contracted mutual alliances:
    2. (You) go, then, for four months (backwards and forwards, as you will), throughout the land, but know that you cannot escape (the punishment of) Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers (in the Hereafter).
    3. And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger, to the people (assembled) on the day of the Great Pilgrimage,- that Allah and His Messenger dissolve (treaty) obligations with the pagans. If, then, you repent, it is better for you; but if you turn away, then know that you cannot frustrate Allah. And proclaim a grievous penalty to those who disbelieve.
    4. (But the treaties are) not dissolved with those pagans with whom you have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill your engagements with them to the end of their term: for Allah loves the righteous.
    5. But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever you find them, and seize them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
    6. If one amongst the pagans asks you for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.
    7. How can there be a league, before Allah and His Messenger, with the pagans, except those with whom you made a treaty near the sacred Mosque? As long as these stand true to you, stand true to them: for Allah loves the righteous.
    8. How (can there be such a league), seeing that if they get an advantage over you, they respect not in you the ties either of kinship or of covenant? With (fair words from) their mouths they entice you, but their hearts are averse from you; and most of them are rebellious and wicked.
    9. The Signs of Allah have they sold for a miserable price, and (many) have they hindered from His way: evil indeed are the deeds they have done.
    10. In a Believer they respect not the ties either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who have transgressed all bounds.
    11. But (even so), if they repent, establish regular prayers, and practice regular charity,- they are your brethren in Faith: (thus) do We explain the Signs in detail, for those who understand.
    12. But if they violate their oaths after their covenant, and attack your faith,- fight ye the chiefs of unfaith: for their oaths are nothing to them: that thus they may be restrained.
    13. Will you not fight people who violated their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and attacked you first? Do you fear them? Nay, it is Allah Whom you should more justly fear, if you believe!
    (Quran Surah al-Tawbah 9:1-13)

Difference is, the verse mentioned, 9:5 (the violence in the Quran mentioned), is talking about self-defense because the rulers of Mecca, who were idolaters, were planning an attack on the Prophet Muhammad and his followers, to stop them from spreading islam in the region.
Beyond that, the Holy Quran in no way justifies murder; it unequivocally states, “Whosoever killed a person … it shall be as if he had killed all mankind” (5:32).

First, Amalekites (or Amalekim) is never used in the Bible, it is always the singular Amalek and means either Atheism or Godlessness. So Agag Melek Amalek means "the High-One, King of godlessness" and is the Prince of the Power of the Air, who in Judaism is an incarnate demon-king, not a human king.
Second, if Genocide was the intended meaning then 1 Samuel 15:32-33 makes no sense, 'Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag Melek Amalek. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past. And Samuel said, "As thy sword hath made women childless, **so shall thy mother be childless among women."** And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.'
Agag is the so-called Melek Amalek. But as we read in the Torah, it is written, 'How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which Yahweh hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his [anointed] king shall be raised over Agag, and his [anointed] kingship shall be exalted. El (ie. God) brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of a wild ox: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows.'

5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

Non of the Quran passages with context and knowledge are worrying. 99% of them is about people that wronged the Muslim and tried to wipe them out despite that it didn't say to do the same. Reading before and after the verse as well as knowing the chapter it is in as well the resone of revlerlation is important to understand any verse in the Quran in near totally. Not to mention yiu can't just use your mind in Islam. 85% of Islam is agreed upon concrete and 15% are in opinion but a specific set of few different opinions that any of them are ok and accepted but to give flexibility. U can track and check the scholarship history to check the understanding of anything in Islam. Most of Islam all aspects are long stopped to be discussed as they completely over analyzed and set in specific frames of understanding. So any way of doing your own opinion is simply rejected.
The problem extremist over bord and contradict themselves.
There is no compression between the courpted books and Quran in valence. It is like such as for example, comparing early Persia to the Mongolias or WW2. There is no comparison.
No Muslim ignor anything in Islam or Quran. Terrorists in Islam don't invoke them, they take them out of context or give unaccpted opinion morphing it to something else by ignorance and politics.
