I use jack stands instead of axle stands they are much safer. I hear in the UK the drain plugs are on the wrong side, and apparently in Australia they turn backwards.

All good tips.Those spark plugs in a recess,what i always do to start them is a 12 inch or so length of flexible plastic pipe snugly gripping the sparkplug,but if you do manage to offer it up crossthreaded it'll just slip.

The only but best thing i learned was I need some more wheel chocks, the look cool so just brought some!!
I went and bought a vacuum pump for sucking out the oil through the dup stick port (I have a engine cover in the bottom so it's S pain to remove) was about 40 quid, very handy.
I’ve have been professional motor mechanic for 45 years and counting and I always spray the bullshit after a service I think a nice finishing touch after all my efforts nice one bud.

Good video and good advice. When I started doing my own oil and plugs 25 years ago have overtightened (snapped) plugs and have chewed up sump torx sockets using the wrong bit. Drilled out the sump plug and luckily managed to wedge an oversize torx into what was left of the plug. You only make these mistakes once but could have done with you tube back then :)
We all make mistakes part of living like you said the mistake that cost you money is the best mistake you'll ever make

Do you put the chock on the back or front of the back wheel? In this video it's on the front of em just wanna know which is best, thought it might be better to chock it at the back of the back wheel
Am I safe in using a trolley jack on the subframe? Manual says to jack on sill but I notice tyre places etc. use different points.

What do you think of the VW long life serving? 2 years or 20K. I put my Audi and the wifes old EOS back on 12 months, just didn't like the idea of it being in there so long
I put a little bit of copper grease on the plug threads to stop them welding themselves into the block, I know it messes up the torque setting so just tighten them up to what feels right
Maybe you wouldn't agree with me on that.
Hi mate I never use copper grease on anything apart from brakes specially threads copper grease act like sandpaper there is other grease out there you can use that is a lot better than copper grease for this job
@@bodgitandleggitgarage it's what is in the shed, I started doing this 30 years ago as spark plugs can be sticky in old Fiat engine's. Thanks for your reply on this Leon.

I know NGK doesn’t recommend it. But others swear by it.
My sister has a 1.2 v corsa ecotech..she ran it almost dry. Drove 70 miles with oil light on. I put 5w 40 vauxhal tesco oil in?
Any oil is probably better than no oil !
I use 5w 40 or 10w 40 Semi-Synthetic in my old 1.2 v Corsa .
For the first 5 or 6 years it got 10w 40
plane old dinosaur juice type oil .
That's what the service history says .
I didn't have the car from new …... but it doesn't burn oil .
Note
The oil pressure switch can fail allowing oil to pass through it .
So emptying the system !
I like the part where you put the sump plug back in...
Thanks you if I have to say you absolutely everything in a video it would take too long I think if you forget something like that that because it's not shown on the video you might need people to help you dress in the morning maybe then people shouldn't be working on their own cars you can't teach stupid
@@bodgitandleggitgarage I agree, tho it is worth mentioning not to overtighten plastic and aluminium sumps Vs steel, many new mechanics or hobbyists haven't really developed the 'feeling' for it yet.
@@bodgitandleggitgarage only thing is, some cars have things like copper washers on sump plugs that you should replace when you take the plugs out. Good to mention that and highlight the issue. I guess this time it really was simply screw it in again.

I've been told with modern EU car's the difference between max and min on the dip stick all ways 1litre is this correct I've been using this to help hitting MAX first time when topping up after first start
Which chocs do you use ?, Milky Way's are a bit soft , I always use Toffee Crisps somewhat firmer I think , Walnut Whips are the right shape but the chocolate seems brittle and the filling is very soft. Any suggestions .....?

Good video but why not take the guesswork out of it and get a genuine oil filter? If your not confident the seal will do its job correctly then how can you be sure the filter will work correctly?
Hi mate I have proven another videos and so have a lot of other RUclipsrs buying things from the main dealers even with the chassis numbers still doesn't mean you are going to get the correct part as regards the filter seal like I said if it's not broke don't fix it

Prevention is better than the cure when it comes to the job of the oil filter. I’m an experienced mechanic and have seen numerous cheap oil filters fail and never had any problems with genuine ones
@@kevingahan1 everybody has their own opinion on what parts they use or shouldn't use it's entirely up to them I have stated in previous videos what parts are used and why whether their aftermarket or genuine

Is it best to change spark plugs yearly even if you do little miles? Eg 4-5k miles a year. Or would they still be as good to leave them say 2 years
Hi mate is best to change everything every year regardless of mileage because you were still get condensation in the oil roughed on things etc
I don't pretend to know better, but you definitely don't need to change spark plugs every year and especially not if you don't put on many miles in the first place. That would be a complete waste of money. Just check out e.g. NGK and their recommendations. I'll bet that you won't even need to replace them after 50,000 miles in some cases.

I just pull them & re gap at the 2 year mark .
Change every 4 or 5 years unless a problem occurs .
As cats are expensive keeping a good set of used plugs in the car it may be helpful on a dark & cold night !

@@maddoxgaming8310 yes I must admit it does seem very low don't know if it's been changed but like I said in the video I never listen to that anyway I always tighten it by feel
I change mine every year without fail and always change all air and oil filters
