      uh huh ...and gross column gear shifters!

    • @CaptHollister
      @CaptHollister 10 лет назад +1

      Micheal Keen These cars do not have shifters in the common sense. Those levers are not connected to the transmission, but to the cars computer. MB has chosen to equip its cars with a little column-mounted joystick to tell the computer that you want to move forward, reverse, or park and to free-up the space on the console for the infotainment control button, usb connection, cubby holes, etc... . Any manual shifting you choose to do is effected via standard paddle-shifters. Audi has elected to remain firmly-planted in the 1970s and retain a standard, full-size, console-mounted shifter which looks and feels exactly like it was hooked-up to the transmission, but isn't. Is there a point to this fakery ?

    • @michealkeen7155
      @michealkeen7155 10 лет назад

      You're right. I should have called it a gear selector. Fakery, come on man. Your missing the point. The steering column gear selector looks and feels awful. I laughed at it the first time I saw it. That was my first reaction. Funny you mention the 70's - the MB gear selector reminds me of an old 70's Buick or Olds... nothing says this car is for a "mature" driver then a selector like that. Miles from sexy, progressive, or sporty. Really it creates a disconnect with some of the elegant styling of the exterior of their vehicles. I have seen button style gear selectors, a dial, a horrid joystick(BMW)... It doesnt matter if is connect to anything. Audi's decision to stick with a traditional gear selector is sound. People arent puzzled by it. Looks good. Feels good. Its ergonomic. People connect with a tradition of driving when they place their hand on a traditional selector. One hand on the steering wheel...

    • @ishta

      It felt weird at first but I have driven column shifting cars before. so did not bother me All my other cars and trucks are manual on the floor but I adapt in like 3 seconds if I have to drive an automatic. I like the paddle shifting.

    I love that number pad on the Mercedes. I actually am the type not to like knobs & switches but instead dial numbers right from a keypad. I'm sad that the industry is moving away from this sort of control scheme.
    Also, that Q5 while great is WAY overpriced. A compact SUV costing nearly $60k? You mad? That's not too far off a ML350 or Lexus RX350 money.

    I own a mercedes. and I cant imagine my self with out the number pad. for many reasons. first of all: you can dial numbers with out taking your phone out, 2nd you can save your music channels on different numbers and choose to listen to them instead of scrolling by simply pressing the number that you saved the channel on. 3rd, you can use it for navigation to punch the street number. again it is faster with the number pad then scrolling. 4th, own a Mercedes and you will know more ;)

Will pick up in San Diego. 4 banger diesels may actually be netter than V6. our Jeep CRD is a 4 banger and it was explained to me that because they have more to travel, the downstroke has force, Same with the Ford V8 diesel vs the Cummins 6 inline.

    the big problem with the GLK is the lack of space in the back seats. so small that even entry to the backseat is awkward. not family friendly. if you are single or don't have passengers in the backseat then the GLK is great.

      +Jason Debly That is exactly the real weak point considering its 17 ft^3 cargo volume without back seats down, which hinders me to buy it. I am so desparately cherishing GLC has a diesel engine coming to US market, while it's not, so disappointing.

    I've driven both in my selection process. The Q5 (s-line) averages 6.3 l/100 with a 70-30 hwy city split, which is insane for the size and power it has. The Merc, i do agree is more refined in the interior, there is no question. the exterior is a wash. On one side, you have the big bold Merc statement which is almost too in your face. The Audi, you know when you see it, is an Audi, but it isn't in your face, yet it has that girl next door look compared to the Merc almost supermodel. I have to say, driving both vehicles, the has a 4 banger, and you can't hide that. It labours and is not remotely close to as quick as the Audi. The mileage is pretty negligible between the two but accel is night and day. There is clearly a market for the Merc, no question, but the audi is all around better (and lets face it, if we're spending 50k on a car, you can spend 55-60k or you shouldnt be in that segment of vehicle at all) I know we all have our preferences, this is mine, but I am trying to throw some hard facts into this. One thing is for sure, whether you're in the Merc or the Audi, life's got to be pretty good to be there.

    I will never even compare Audi, a second tier "luxurious" car, to Benz. Regardless of diesel or gas, regardless of hybrid or plain internal combustion engine, Audi always gives worst MPG among Benz, Bmw or Volvo, which signals clearly that its engine or transmission technology has a great gap behind all those makers.

      It's just that the difference in price is not justified by the difference in prestations.
      The GLK is still a great car, I personnaly prefer the cabin, it is still comfortable, very well built.
      So yes, the 6 cylinders engine of the Audi is a bit more refined than the 4 cylinders of the Merc, but it is not as good in efficiency, and all in all, there's no justification for a 10.000$ difference in price.

    The Mercedes' steering column mounted controls are ridiculous and the Mercedes' Command is not intuitive at all! I test drove the C300 when I bought my A4 and test drove the GLK 250 when I bought my Q5 and nothing has changed over the three year gap! Audis are hands down superior in essentially every conceivable way! Yes, I ended up paying more for the Audis than the Mercedes, but the value proposition is so much better! Mercedes just feel cheap these days...

    • @MBAMG65

      Mercedes indeed struggled with the refinement of their entry level cars during the past decade or so, now that they have included CLA and GLA as their lower-end models in their lineup, the C class and GLK can go all out on comfort, luxury and refinement. After all these what Mercedes does the best. C prototypes has already given us a glimpse of this trend, I'm sure the next-gen GLK will follow suit. After all they are based on the same platform~

    • @Ocranius
      @Ocranius 10 лет назад

      MBAMG65 I am looking forward to these improvements as well. The more competitive the auto makers are, the better it is for consumers. However, I still cannot wrap my head around the placement of the controls across the entire Mercedes line, save the AMG models. Despite sacrificing a bit of cupholder space, a traditional center console gear selector is much more ergonomic.

    In reference to this "review".... You (AutoGuide.com) should eschew the crappy techno music in favor of something that will reflect the users that will ultimately respect this video.
    Reviewing a Q5 and a GLK 250 with 1998 techno music is just bad publicity for your channel!
    Get with the times, gang.
    Drum and Bass, Classic Rock, and (sadly) dubstep, are the popular music of the times.
    P.S. A P.S. rating of power does NOT equate to a HP rating. 240PS = 236HP. And that doesn't factor in the possibility that Audi tested BHP vs (american idiocy) WHP.
    P.P.S. Before YOU (AutoGuide.com), or ANYONE, contests this information. Please note, there's a *SIZABLE DIFFERENCE* between BHP, and WHP. As anyone, of intelligence, will commensurate with me.
    En finis, this is why I've, ultimately, downvoted your review of the GLK 250. You lack precision, intelligence, and ultimately, a sense of what is different between US, and UK/EU/The rest of the world, power conversions. And for that *SIGNIFICANT* lack of intelligence. You earn the downvote of oblivion.
    P.S. It's just a shame that the rest of the internet can't/won't realize/understand this point and follow my downvote.

      Wow look at the kettle calling the pot black. Maybe you should get educated because if you were smart enough to not call other people stupid that you would realize that Audi of America and Mercedes Benz both rate their engines in America in HP and not PS so your statement stands corrected.

    • @ningen1980
      @ningen1980 9 лет назад

      Sturm breakers You made a correction to a mistake you fabricated inside your brain.
      I was referring to the difference between Brake Horsepower (BHP), Wheel Horsepower (WHP) and Pferdestarke (PS).
      BHP is an engines power measured at the crankshaft/flywheel.
      WHP is power measured on a "rolling road", AKA dynamometer.
      PS is a metric rating of horsepower, with a conversion of 1 pferdestarke = 0.98632007271 horsepower. And has been rendered obsolete by a general switch to kilowatt ratings.
      So, you should get educated.
      GG buddy.

    • @sturmbreakers7817
      @sturmbreakers7817 9 лет назад +1

      I did not fabricate anything in my brain. You make reference to different units of measurements because of what you thought the guy referenced was WHP. Only things that were stated was the HP and how that power was transferred to the wheels via the 4matic system not that it made 200 WHP. And, to insinuate that Americans love WHP while most don't know what that is unless you probably like to race which is a very small percentage of the population so tell me that I also fabricated that. Oh don't forget that AutoGuide is Canadian and not American.

    • @ningen1980
      @ningen1980 9 лет назад

      Sturm breakers The video referenced the WHP figures for the "'Murican" model Q5. Not the international BHP figures.

    They missed the key point between the two comparisons: Quattro. My Audi Q5 TDI is a winter beast. No comparison.

    Ok, first of all the little guy way over sells the GLK 250. The Q5 isnt cramped at all. Just moments before his rant the other reviewer mentioned the Q5 has a bigger back seat and trunk area. You would think their editor would catch that... In my opinion the new design language from Benz is really Volvo-esque especially in the front of the vehicles including the GLK. Unfortunate. I think the reviewers came to the conclusion that the GLK 250 is pretty good and cheeper so lets go with that. Then they tried (a little too hard) to justify their choice. I pick the Audi Q5 TDI. Its more money but its more vehicle and it is the clear winner in my books. Look at the weird digital analogue radio display on the GLK. Whats up with that? The whole interface is just dated and weird. Q5 wins. I will happily pay a bit more. The end.

      Not to mention the column shifter in the GLK... gross!!!

    • @jaredsc10
      @jaredsc10 10 лет назад

      Micheal Keen That column shifter is great once you own a car that has it. I have two GLs, and it's really easy, it saves so much space, and you don't have to worry about fiddling with a normal shifter. Also, the GLK has a MUCH more luxurious interior than the Audi. Audi is still stuck in the '90s with the Q5, A5, A4, TT, R8, etc. Plain ugly and unluxurious. I get GLK loaners all the time (in fact, I have one as I'm writing this), and it's a wonderful car.

    You guys surely went out of your ways to find elegant expressions to sugar-coat Audi's styling, lol. Good job gracefully criticizing the austere and borderline-boring looks. Aesthetic beauty is a very subjective matter, and I admire your effort to deliver a fair and professional expression of your opinion.

    • @Ocranius
      @Ocranius 10 лет назад

      I find the term "understated elegance" pretty much sums up Audi styling. I understand the BMW, Mercedes, and Audi are polarizing brands, but Audi cannot be criticized for trying so hard to make there car so unique, to the point that they are just plain ugly, just as this comparison illustrates.

    These two do not compare. The Audi Q5 goes head to head with the Mercedes ML 350 BlueTec. The Mercedes GLK is in the same class as a BMW X3, Audi Q3, or even a VW Tiguan. Only problem is that a diesel is not available in North America for those 3.

    • @MBAMG65
      @MBAMG65 10 лет назад +1

      They ARE within the same segment, only difference being this diesel model is stuffed with a bigger engine. ML is way larger and more family oriented, based on a mid-sized sedan platform, while these two are based on their compact sedans, A4 and C class, respectively.

    • @yippie6862
      @yippie6862 10 лет назад

      The Audi Q7 is the one that should compete with the Mercedes ML. The Q7 is based on the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, but it is stretched almost a foot in length and that makes the Q7 longer and bigger than an ML.
      You are right that the Audi Q5 is based on the A4. What confused me is that the Audi Q5 is over one foot longer than the Mercedes GLK, costs more money and has a bigger engine.
      What is further confusing is that in Europe Audi also has a Q3 and even a Q1. I read that Audi is even coming out with a Q9! I'm not sure how many different sizes they need?
      It is hard to directly compare Audi's Q series to other brands and the traditional small, medium, and large concept.

    • @whitestrips1
      @whitestrips1 10 лет назад

      Yippie The Q5 and the X3 are in the same segment. Similar size/price. The Q3 is comparable to the X1. To suggest that the X3 is in the same segment as the Q1 is absurd. Quit being a homer and look at things objectively.
