The Amazon rainforest has faced encroachment and deforestation for a long time. But it wasn’t until Brazil’s military dictatorship came to power in the 1970s that deforestation spiked, becoming a big business in the Amazon. When that expansion reached the state of Acre, it met resistance. Chico Mendes, a rubber tapper from the region, took the fight to protect the Amazon from the depths of the rainforest to the global stage. In the process, he gave his life. But the fight he started lives on.
To understand the history of the Amazon and how Chico Mendes changed the course of that history, watch the video above, our second episode of Atlas’ Amazon miniseries.

Great video but most of you translations aren’t correct.
"At first he believed he was protecting the rubber tappers and the forest. But then he realized, he was protecting the Amazon and the world." He was the hero the world needed... and didn't even know.
I think he knew. Climate change is not a recent discovery, and Chico Mendes was a smart man.
well except for the nortic countries, like russia, they want climate change to continue so that they lands and seas will be more warm.
People hate folks that are trying to save the world.

Well, what about my second vacation home? I _need_ one with a landing pad for my helicopter! Is nobody thinking about _me_ here?
The most ridiculous is that they are trying to save even the rancher's farms. If they cut the amazon down, the rain will stop and the region will become a desert. You won't be able to raise cattle there.
We need more people like Mr. Chico Mendes.
Many more like him have been murdered.
It helps to have less people like Bolsonaro.
I completly agree with you
But the fact is that WE NEED to be more like Chico Mendes
I am the first one who is saying that it is very difficult
But if we want some changes, first we have to change
One of Chico Mendes’s best friends, Marina Silva, ran for president in 2010, 14 and 18. She was actually featured in part 1 of this series.

“At first, he believed he was protecting the rubber tappers and the forest...but then he realized, he was protecting The Amazon and the world”
His mission was for equality for his people but then it became so much more, it became survival for all people. What a great quote
Every time someone does something different there is a line out the door trying to take that dream down. RIP Chico!
In your final video, could you please also add some things that we, the RUclips audience, can do to help the Amazon. Thank you so much for creating this series and spreading awareness, this issue truly deserves such coverage at the least.
That potentially crosses the line between merely being an informative publication and being a political activist publication.
Talking as a Brazilian, the best thing you can do is to pressure politicians and companies in your country to stop buying beef and soybean from Brazil, specially from deforested areas. It's the only thing that worked and the Bolsonaro administration knows this. Bolsonaro encouraged ranchers to set fire to the Amazon as soon as he took office. But when the news about the fires spread to the world earlier this year, the Minister of Agriculture (who is 100% pro-ranchers) practically begged the President to do something, because she knew this would hurt ranchers in their pockets. And only then the government started to put out the fires.
What you can do: Nothing. Your money is the only thing that matters, & that’s for buying back land so the government can’t use it.
@@Barkend3 the main export & food people are eating from the Amazon though is the soybeans not the beef & most don't even realise it, very few people understand that the "Vegetable oil" they consume is in fact soybean oil & the purpose of those Brazilian soybean crops. 55% of vegetable oil in the US is soybean oil, the vast majority of it coming from Brazil
People need to realize that money is just a value we all agree but not what it actually is
You can't buy the things you want when theres no more of it
Well, they don't give any f*cks. All those people think of is Cash Cash Holla Holla get tha Dolla.
This won't happen.
I've been seeing alot of these comments about "people should be mindful of lalala" which is beautiful and all but it's in fact not that simple... Just switch "the people" for conglomerates both in congress and companies. They are the ones operating this whole game.

First politics, second money, third?
Politics = money. The answer is in the first video. Indigenous groups lives in protected areas that the government wants to take to the ruralistas
Third- Ignorance
It is way more complex than that. You have ruralist, small farmers, indigenus etc. Trying to simplify 30 million people, that include, black, white, arabians, east asians, natives and any mix of thosse. Is not very simple.
My favorite analogy is that of drug trafic it is bad but saiyng that people became dealers and suport drug lords just becase of greed and politics is just wrong.
The third one seems to be Bolsonaro's fight against thenatives so it's racism

After watching this video, Respect to Chico Mendes. The amazon rainforest should definitely be preserved. People will do anything to destroy something just for something temporary like money. 😑
This is one of the best Vox videos I've seen all year. You guys make excellent content!
It is not one nation or country now. The Amazon forest is responsibility of all the nations. Brazil should be compensated by the rest of the world for protecting forest. Asking Brazil not to cut forests, expend on protection and not to be paid for loss of revenue is unjustifiable.
Unselfishness is more paying, but humans do not have patience to practice it. And at last change is brought only when catastrophe strikes humans.
Darwin once said, human species is still not evolved fully. How true!
Vox has simply put environment protection responsibility on brazil. They never talk about how brazil will develop without exploiting its resource. No developed nation will compensate brazil for protecting forest instead of using land for more profitable venture. Vox will suggest them to use low income of rubber instead. If there is mechanism by which economic value of amazon forest and resources can be ascertained fairly and all nations compensate brazil for not using them for that. Then these documentaries can justify themselves. Otherwise they will always be viewed as enemies of brazils economic properity by the govt.
I see your point, and as a brazilian i can say to you, thats the opposite our government is doing.
First, amazon is a really profitable area for brazil, if used consciously it will produce a lot for brazil industry. But if not, we will lost amazon and that will create a lot of damages to our country. One of it is the desertification of the northeast that survivess of the amazon umidity. So, ok, we could be compensated, but if we don't we still must do something ourselfs...
Second, brazil was financed from various countries on europe to take care of the amazon... but a few months ago, our president just broke alliances with this countries and stop receiving money, as well helped a lot of "ruralistas" to take the amazon for themselfs...
we accept help, but we must do something eitherway!!!!
You rich countries have to give us money or we will need cut down the forest... simple as that
I don't think so
A gente precisa é parar de depender de agricultura e gado. Os países mais desenvolvidos são industrializados.
They already paid. Germany and Norway were the largest donors of the Amazon fund.
