- In early 1995, Sega unleashed Sega Rally Championship to a worldwide audience. It was their first polygon rally racing game, and it was nothing short of absolute arcade perfection.

Episode Notes:
1. Arcade version captured via Nebula Model 2. Saturn version via RGB Framemeister. PS2 version via component Framemeister.
2. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi has created a ton of music for Sega. Outrunners, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Daytona, Sega Rally, it's amazing the wealth of content this dude was a part of.
3. Sega Rally 3 was released as Sega Rally Online Arcade for the Xbox 360 and PS3, though it isn't a one to one port. Sadly, it was pulled from those digital stores soon thereafter.
4. Sega Rally 2 has only ever seen a PC and Dreamcast port, neither of which were arcade perfect.
5. Sega Rally Revo is a stand alone game released on the Xbox 360, PS3, PSP, and PC. It stands as sort a remake of the first game, though I would say it is more inspired than a direct representation.
6. Sega Rally to this day is one of my favorite racing games of all time. It isn't loaded with content, but there is a joy to its gameplay that few other racing games even come close to matching. - Игры
🎶Game Over, Yeaaaaaaaah!🎶
the most happiest game over screen, wouldn't you say?
I certainly never tired of hearing it. ;)
It's one of my favorites. But I admit that I still prefer. G. A. M. E. O. Uuu. E. R., G.A.M.E. O.Uu.E.R., game, game, game, game!
@@Rationalific Made me look forward to running out of credits.
The Saturn version sounds better
@@iwanttocomplain I guess that's one way to look at it
The blow-off valve sounds on the cars were on point in this game, well before people actually started paying attention to those details.
There's a recurring theme with SLX videos: "Here's a great game everyone loved and would gladly pay to play on a modern platform! There are no plans for an AGES release."
Maybe Sega can just put him in charge of deciding what gets the green light? I need Sega Rally more than I need Wonder Boy.
And Spud Racer more than Virtura Racing
how many times do we get our hopes up with SEGA ? even now!! always disappointments when unveiling .OK SEGA listen release a super scaler compilation (hang on / super hang on / afterburner /space harrier / outrun / power drift / galaxy force that would even now sell like hot cakes . put on XBOX (easy conversions) then work on model 2 games compilations VF/+2 / FV/+2 DAYTONA /+2 SEGA RALLY /+2 / GLOC etc , all these must haves even now wanted by many gamers , don't let all your classics fade away into history without giving SEGA fans what they really want
Me and my boyfriend play SEGA Rally still to this day fairly reguarly. Every month we sit and play through the 3 maps atleast 2 or 3 nights. It's a bounch of fun and we get really competetive! Plays fantastic.
*SEGA RALLY is perfect on the SATURN and it's by the same director of Ridge Racer fun fact!* ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
that explain the similar feeling between those 2 games when you slide in the corners
Never understood how Sega could make an all time classic with Sega Rally, but then straight after make a complete mess with Sega Touring Car Championship.
Priorities. Remember, at that point, the Saturn "wasn't Sega's future".....
I hear sega touring car championship was dire on the saturn, but was it crap in the arcades too?
Sega Lord proves it again Saturn was Sega’s best ! Sega rally is a timeless work of art !
Was not aware that there were improvements on the eu and jp releases.
This is the perfect essay on this game SLX bravo 👏 !
It pioneered so many innovations in both driving and video games. I can’t see a Toyota Celica anymore without being reminded of this game!
I remember mountain on level 2 is completely missing on the USA version. Right at the hairpin.
That Lancia Delta in Sega Rally is one of my favorite video game cars of all time... So iconic.
My friend. I have a story with Sega Rally 2. I went to study 700 km from my parents, where, I met my girlfriend. At 600km the bus uses to stop in where an arcade machine was allocated. My mind created a memory matching when I see this machine, it means I was only 1 hour away from her. Now, I enjoy playing Sega Rally on the Super Model 3 emulator and as well, I do life with my love. Thanks for your videos!!
Did your girlfriend enjoy arcade games too?
I miss arcades
as a 2000's kid, I miss when arcade games were the GOOD ones from the 80's and 90's
I live near a Round 1 Arcade. It's awesome. Cruis'n Blast is a fun experience. There are quite a few good games from the 2010s
Very cool. I am 42 grow up in late 80s early to mid 90s arcades. Putt Putt used to have something called super Saturday pay 5 bucks all the games and golf you can play with a hot dog and soda
Just go to the Philippines there are still a lot of arcades here with 90s games in fact!
I remember playing these games as a kid and thinking “it can’t possible get any better looking than this.” Man we have come along way.
I remember thinking that while playing World Series Baseball on the Genesis.
Loved this game at the time, seemed out of this world compared to anything else. Also loved Sega Rally 2 on the dreamcast. Again it was miles ahead of anything else at the time.
The arcade racing genre peaked with daytona usa & sega rally in the mid 90s. What a time to be alive!
I remember seeing Sega rally 2 in an arcade in Spain and was blown away how impressive it looked
Played the hell out of this on the Saturn, got to the point where I knew exactly where to hit other cars on the circuits and at what perfect angle to get maximum speed boosts, (slightly goofy physics shot you forward if you hit them just right). Something to be said for having fewer tracks than modern racing games I think, really had to master what was there.
lol epic. Needs some vids. I love the game but I never noticed that. Might bust it out this weekend.
Arcade and Saturn version's it's extremelly awesome! I have mine well kept! Miss these times so much.
This game brings back so many memories. The Saturn version was insanely good. It’s a shame that Sega rally 2 on Dreamcast was such a let down.
billystars What was so bad about SEGA Rally 2?
Horizons1 the game starts off well, but after a short while into driving the frame rate plummets. Some people may be ok with it, but for me it ruins the game.
@@Horizons1
The game was coded for Windows CE (which the Dreamcast supported as a major feature) instead of directly for the hardware using Sega's SDK (like most console games are made). This put an extra layer of an OS/drivers/etc between the game and the hardware, causing shitty, unstable frame rates. The game was meant as a demo for Dreamcast's Windows CE integration, telling game makers that they could just do Windows development instead of learning the DC's custom SDK, but it it accomplished the opposite, as very few other DC games were ever developed using the Windows CE SDK following this debacle.
The 2nd one wasn't that bad but the frame rate is bonkers.
Yes frame hate in SR2 is poor
I had the PC demo on my computer back in 1997 or so, and I remember swedish PC Gamer magazine doing a comparison between it and Destruction Derby 2. I ended up asking my parents for DD2 in the end, because it had a lot more content that 3 tracks and 3 cars(1 has to be unlocked). I did come back to Sega Rally now and then though and I've played the arcade game many times too
There is a local skating rink that still has Sega Rally in it. It's such a fun game to play with a steering wheel. Still looks damn good too
I loved this game thoroughly when it came out, so much that I’ve purchased it twice. Why twice you might ask? Well The first time I’ve played it was a lent copy from a friend, that copy was never returned to him because my little sister damaged it beyond repair with pencils so I had to refund my friend with a new copy, I got mine 6 months later with some savings. Still got that copy, I fire it sometimes both for the game or just the redbook audio.
I bought the dream cast machine and this was with it cost me £400 way back in 1999 from littlewoods catalogue
Fabio Semino remember when I beat you at the mall?
Martin Golding test drive 5 was my game
I spent so many hours on the first track of Sega Rally, it's my favourite race track to date, me and my friend spent hours challenging each other, and it was always something small like going into the corners a fraction of a second too early or going over the bump off by a few mm that lost us the race.
Same mate
Imagine if Tom Kalinske was still in charge of Sega of America until the Dreamcast days, and the execs of Sega of Japan didn't get so full of themselves after the initial success of Genesis...
Sega Rally would still exist today as a formidable franchise.
Love Sega racers coverage!
This game only has 4 tracks and 3 cars to choose from yet I still come back to it often and have done for 25 years. Testament to how great the gameplay is.
First Saturn game I ever bought .... hours and hours of fun trying to master the tracks. I still give it a spin once a year or so to this day and it still holds up. Great video mate ;)
Same here mate. Fire up my Saturn just to play this game. The soundtrack is one of the best ever for a racing game. Dangerous playing that music when driving in real life though! 😜
The Saturn port of this game was truly an amazing arcade racing masterpiece. It’s still my all time favourite arcade racer on any home console too this day. Just beating your Personal Best time by a hundredth of a second was so addictive, which gave it endless longevity for me & the heavy drifting style handling just felt absolutely perfect. Not even its many sequels can beat the 1st SEGA Rally Championships handling.
SEGA SATURN WE SALUTE YOU!
My father and i played this many many many hours and daytona usa as well such a wondefull game that brings back nostalgia😊
That Lakeside course really is brutal, I could beat it on the PS2 version but I’ve never able to do it on the actual arcade machine.
Lots of memory on this game, and hours of playing it.
And the joy of unlocking the Lancia Stratos by winning the 4th race
4:54 Naofumi Hataya is the composer for this track, he's the composer for all the tracks in the Saturn version.
Surprised you didn't mention the inclusion of the Lancia Stratos on the Saturn version dude, that car was a beast!
I remember having a 4 player Sega Rally arcade at the school cantina from where I went to college. Good times playing it tons, specially when we found out a hack to give free credits
I actually just purchased this for my saturn, hasn't shipped yet but i can't wait to play it again after so many years, this video made me want to play it again lol
Never saw one in arcade, but discovered it on a Saturn preview tape and was blown away...Got it for the Saturn....And I still live for the narrator - Cool Breeze birds and clouds! Relax and enjoy!
The lack of an updated re-release is just one of Sega's many baffling decisions.
Aside from Sega being Sega, I think they can't afford to pay the car companies to license the content now, or the companies don't want to give permission anymore.
@@KhushbuMel remove the logo call it something else.
@@SomeOrangeCat just like what they did with Daytona USA?
@@KhushbuMel how much money is Toyota really going to demand to use the Celica in 2020, when you can't even buy them anymore?
@@DeesBees85 I did some googling: People have been speculating that Gran Turismo Sport may have an exclusive license with Toyota now. Forza 7 didn't have many Toyotas because of a licensing issue. Forza's studio has MS's money behind them. If they're having problems, Sega's screwed.
Banging through those gears in the arcade was bliss...
The Saturn and Sega rally was very important in my life, I played it with my best friend in the 90th, I still remember my best lap and each circuit. Then we learned Japanese to play rpg on Saturn, and now I’m living in Japan! Saturn changed my life
Great rundown as always - thanks for your coverage of the retro gaming hobby.
Best racing gameplay, like Dirt 2 over 10 years later. Best music, wow! SEGA Saturn rules!
I got the JP Saturn version back in October, my first time playing it. The game 100% holds up even without any nostalgia for it. It even might well be my favourite game on the system, it still feels that good.
There is something magical about your channel and that's why it pops up as the first in my channels' list
Love your channel dude! The second stage music takes me back to the good ode days.
I played a hell of a lot of Sega Rally 2 on Dreamcast in the day. Can't believe it's been almost 2 years since I bought my first Sega Saturn. I picked up Sega Rally along with it as well. Still an awesome game!
This is the must have title that got my brother to buy the Saturn. There is no ralley racing game that comes close. So satisfying to drift. The absolute pinnacle of arcade fun mixed with real physics.
Another awesome video. I remember the cheat from the Saturn game allowing you to race against a ghost from one of the developers, I couldn't ever get near him. The best thing I could say about this is I had only played the Saturn version and had become a beast at the game, and when I had finally found an arcade, having never played the game, I went on to smash the arcade record times at my first attempt.
Thanks for sharing this. Brings back so many good memories.
My local arcade still has the Sega Rally arcade cabinet. I always do couple rounds with it whenever I visit there.
MY #1 RACING GAME OF ALL TIME
Love this series. One Sega cab that stuck with me was Wing War back from when I was 13 or 14!
I have a model 2 emulator running on my gaming pc, and play Arcade Sega Rally in 4k on a 55inch tv.... Heaven is not the word!!! I also own (and play regularly) a Sega Saturn with VF2, & SR... Your video sir, was pure magic!
Used to play this an awful lot on my uncles Saturn back in the day. Still got a copy of it from getting a bundle of old games in a charity shop I worked at though never had a Saturn to play it.
If sega created the Saturn from root to run model 2 games, like they did with the mega drive and system 16, today's console landscape would be radically different.
It would have been great but the model 2 board was super expensive.
Model 2 PCB ran about $10,000 from what I recall, using super expensive military simulator graphics hardware to achieve total superiority over the competition. There was no way to put those GPUs into a reasonably-priced home console. The Saturn already sold for like $700 in today money.
Long Lost Puss
I agree. They did do an amazing job with most Model 2 conversions starting with VF2. You really have to respect their software engineers working with such “difficult” hardware and figuring out how to squeeze all that juice out of it in a fairly short amount of time. It’s just too bad that by that time, the Saturn had to work extra hard to overcome a bad rep as an “inferior 3D” machine. Also, Sega placed all bets on the strength of their arcade lineup at the time when arcades were quickly waning in popularity in the West and gamers began to expect more content out of their console games. I remember when Sega was selling the system with VF2, Sega Rally and Virtua Cop packed in and still not making a dent in PSX sales. :( Still, I never regretted getting my Saturn (which I still have) on the early launch date. It will always have a special place in my heart.
The conversations were good for what the Saturn was, but they needed to outclass the PlayStation in 3D performance.
What a surprise! Release of an arcade spotlight from you and Sega Rally that makes it even better. Thank you.
Sega Rally on my Saturn is like THE game i keep going back to , it's still so addictive after almost a quarter of a century. Love your work man!!
Arcades were awesome back in the day!
Wonderful video! Great job!
"Long medium left...maybe." When I think of Sega Rally, I always think of "...maybe"! I preferred Daytona USA in the arcade, but of the Saturn ports, Sega Rally takes the cake. As mentioned in this video, in particular, the physics were so much better than with the Saturn version of Daytona USA. One thing, though. It is obvious that the PS2 version of Sega Rally doesn't come anywhere close to the 1995 arcade original. Just compare 13:48 to 5:55.
Co driver : "medium right mAyBE"
Me at the speed of 200 kph :
whatt?!
Sega Rally was the game i bought along with my Saturn back in march of 96. An amazing port of 1 of the best, if not thee best arcade racers ever. A must own game for the Saturn and a must play game in the arcade.
One of the best ever made. Love this game.
Man, I really miss playing this on my Saturn with the steering wheel. Sadly my console died and Sega doesn't even seem to care about re-releasing this gem for something with a steering wheel like an Xbox or PS. c'mon Sega give us more badass Sega Rally!!!
Arcade version is one of the best games from those days. One noteworthy thing is that PC had S2 (also called screamer 2) that was pretty much a mechanics and feel of Sega Rally copied, but with more cars, tracks and better graphics. I absolutely loved that game as kid and imo is really worth testing for Sega rally fans.
Sega has to bring this to Sega Ages... I'm dying to play it with the Switch Pro Controller!
best arcade racer ever
Another divine video from Lord X!!
Sega were the kings of racers in the 90s imo! Scud Race next SLX?
When I Played this game for the first time in the Arcade it was my favourite game
Best arcade racer ever. Great video as always.
As always, loving your content. I've been a big Sega fan since The Master System. I've had almost all their consoles at one time or another. Sega Rally was one of my favorite Saturn games. As soon as I heard the music I knew it Sega Rally. Use to play just to shave off time on my races.
I just got my Saturn and comes with a demo of this game, hope to get a full copy soon!
Buy the Japanese version. It’s like $5 complete.
Ah yes, that demo disc. Can you refresh my memory on something. There's Sega Rally and World Series Baseball, but what was the other demo for? I remember the rest were just video demos.
@@LorenHelgeson the other game is clockwork knight 2, and the demo disc is called Bootleg Sampler
i had this in 1997, for Sega Saturn. Excellent conversion, but extremelly short, like every Sega arcade racing games. The two games in split mode was fine, too, and if u own two SS and two SR, u can play in link mode, like the arcades!
Still play sega rally on my saturn that game back in the day was a family tradition between me my dad and bro who can get the fastest lap on stage 1 the handling in that game still is the best can't beleave sega haven't done a remake/remaster for current consoles with online play
Great episode btw!
You know, the thing that subsequent Sega Rally games missed was simply charm. Sega Rally Championship had it in droves. The announcer, the music, the color pallet. It was all perfection which was never matched.
"... and that is pretty much it"
*Sega Rally Revo (PS3) goes to corner and starts crying because he wasn't remembered*
I said that in regards to releases of the original game. Revo is its own game.
Sega Rally Revo is great, I have it on my Xbox 360 and still play it a lot. It has tons of content, with lots of tracks etc. It's a shame that it didn't seem to sell well. Although it has been pulled from digital stores, a physical copy can be found pretty cheap online. I'd encourage any Sega Rally fan to take a look.
Billy Pattison I play the PSP version and really dig it. Never played the PS3 one, maybe I should get it.
@@louiemalvessi I didn't know about he PSP version, it must be a nice game to have on the go. There was also a physical PC version which I want to get, as I hear that you can up the resolution to 4K and up the framerate to 60 fps. Takes a little work though.
played it so much when anyone came over instead of racing we would play tag, and would have to crash into each other to tag back. also remember the car drift in the mud or gravel then hit the pavement and feeling the tires stick to the different terrain and it blowing my tiny mind back then. such incredible times : D
Found a US Saturn copy of Sega Rally from a seller. Got it for 5 bucks :)
Christmas 95, The Saturn won the xmas console battle - with not only Sega Rally, but Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter 2. 3 Games i still have and will never part with because they are incredible ports.Just need a TV that i can use my light gun on.
I did a video awhile back about Xmas 95. It was a great time to be a Saturn fan.
Sega need to release this gem of a arcade game to modern consoles ASAP!
Amazing video.
Beautiful video, I'm going to celebrate this with a VF2 play session on my japanese Sega Saturn (as a former pal gamerà.
what?? :-) why not with sr??
Amazing video! I'd love to see a serie of videos comparing the Namco counterparts of SEGA Games. Like RAVE RACER, ACE DRIVER and DIRT DASH.
Thanks for this video! Daytona & Sega Rally are my favorite racers. Like everyone else I wish they’d make an arcade perfect port.
The Desert stage did make a return in Sega Rally 3
Great video! I still remember that year where this was part of the big 3, Sega Rally, Virtua Cop and Virtua Fighter 2. Man, the Saturn was something special! Really wish there was still a Sega console (not counting the mini) in 2020. Sega Rally, Daytona 2, SCUD Race, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder on official Sega hardware would be awesome. Come on SEGA!!!!! So many IPs to tap into.
This is top of my wanted list for a future Sega Ages collection
Whenever I played, I could have sworn the voice of the navigator would say "Easy right. Maybe." Was I nuts or did I really hear that?
Strange Armour
I always hear that too!
maybe means that the curve is not absolutely safe to go as fast as possible, so easy left maybe is a bit tougher and might require some drifting etc. regular easy curves should be doable flat out without much care
Lmao....maybe.
@@PiesliceProductions If I'm driving at brown trousers mph, I want a navigator who doesn't say anything remotely vague like maybe.
Easy maybe, medium maybe and hard maybe are basically all the inbetweens. Easy maybe is inbetween easy and medium, medium maybe is inbetween medium and hard, and hard maybe is "oh fuck".
Excellent video man, I wish play the original someday. I love racing games.
If I'm not mistaken there was a Dreamcast version as well. But I remember it not being that good, and it ran over the Windows CE runtime.
That would be SEGA Rally 2.
Yep, due to that shoddy porting it ran like crap on the Dreamcast, at like 30 fps or less
Fabio Akita it was my first DC game after Sonic A. Horrid version, what a disappoinent. Looked great in the magazine pics but ran from 10-60fps.
Childhood memories right here.
I agree it would be a great time to have a remake of Sega Rally, complete with online play.
I always found it amusing that the music track called ‘desert land’ was allocated to the forest stage, and ‘getting muddy’ was used for mountain. Felt like they’d either named the music tracks wrongly or perhaps swapped them last minute. At any rate the Saturn OST is f**king amazing.
Great video
That's my favorite game of all time!
Sega Rally.
The best rally game ever made.
And the best rally game
I’ve ever seen and played.
Apart from V-Rally, Rally Trophy, and of course my personal favourite rally game, Colin McRae Rally, named after my favourite rally driver of all time, Colin McRae.
I have a lot of fond memories of this one. When I bought my first Saturn, it came with a sample disc that had Sega Rally amongst a few other games. I didn't get my first actual game for about a month, so I got a lot of mileage out of that demo disc.
I remember the demo version had just the Forest track against one AI opponent, and used the Lakeside track's music instead.
I still love this game, it was one of first games that made me a believer in replayability
Good work bro 😎🇫🇷
One of the best racing games!
Man, the quarters I dumped in this machine when I was a kid. Got $10 a week allowance, and chore money. Bet there was a 6 or 7 month period where at least $6 of it went into this game every week. Lol! Then as a young adult gettin this for the Saturn... damn good times. Still play it often.
