The only time I saw, and played this title was when I was in Okinawa back in 96 when I was in the Marines. Dropped plenty of quarters in this game. I remember a few titles that I loved during my 6 months there. A Konami Basketball game, Daytona USA, Soul Edge, Tekken 2, Xmen vs Street Fighter, House of the Dead, and Wargods. Last Bronx, Tekken 2, Soul Edge, and Xmen vs Street Fighter were my jams. i remember practically owning the play times on those machines.
I remeber reading my magazines back in the day and watching the screen shots, the reviewer mentioned how the floor and cealings had a high reolution and antialiasing just like the n64 , i was amazed
I bought this one for my Saturn, back in the day.... And my friends, that had ps1, were very impressed with the graphics.... Still I was a very short game.... I found, here in Switzerland, an full arcade cabine for sale for 600 $.... 😁
I have some fond memories of the PC Version, too. Was one of the only fighting games on the PC back than IIRC and had a very nice networking implementation that was well suited for our frequent LAN parties back then. Everyone in the session could watch the fight between the two active players over the net, wile you could do "winner stays in game, looser makes room for the next player" and so on game modes. Great fun. Everyone had their character, for example I loved Yoko good friend always played "the pimp with the stick" and we - as Germans with zero language skills ins Japanese always (mis)understood the words the chars shouted on a win. IIRC it only lacked a 3d acceleration, we all had voodoo 2, later even SLI or voodoo graphics back then and it was software rendering only.
Explaining it is wonderful: "Awesome new fighter" "What's it called?" "Last Bronx. It is set in a dystopian Tokyo where kids beat each other with weapons" "So, not New York?"
Seriously when will Sega release these gems on switch i'm waiting, i want all the model 2 games. Give some Virtua Fighter 2, Last Bronx, Fighters megamix and all others.
I really liked how both *_'LAST BRONX'_* on Saturn and *_'BLOODY ROAR'_* on PlayStation each went out of their way to demonstrate a feeling of absolute carnage on the battlefield, literally making you feel rewarded for virtually beating your opponent to within a quarter inch _(~6mm)_ of their lives without actually killing them, that was nice. Outstanding.
I played this as a teenager in Europe (Spain), and I just loved it! Years after that I had to do my research to know what was the name of that awesome fighting game. I only remembered the weapons, street arenas and little more! Great video!
Great Channel SLX ! This and Anarchy in the Nippon where the two very rare and impressive looking Japanese 3D fighters on the Saturn. Sadly they were missing as you mentioned elements/ lures like story line explanation cinemas, deeper learning curve, additional characters and secrets that could be unlocked; like in Mortal Kombat & tekken. Namco seemed to get this right, of course I’m sure after studying Sega efforts, since Sega generally was first to innovate in several genres. On the topic of hidden characters going back to the local arcade here in New York and seeing new characters available in Mortal Kombat and Tekken was so interesting and rewarding. Besides having impressive intros that were used as captivating shopper bait in the local game stores and malls, beating the Tekken 2 game with each character gave the reward of an intriguing ending cinema. This coupled with a deep character move development added to its allure. I wish Sega would have adopted some of their practices. I love VF2 but have never bother to play through with each character save for Akira, Kage, & Wolf, as there is really no bonus but seeing Dural at the end. Fighting Vipers had some of the most interesting looking characters, following the archetypical character roster of course. I just wished they would used the armor breaks feature a little more making it easier to break off an opponents amor or perhaps giving characters moves they could not execute without the amor; incentivizing people to throw off their characters amour to do moves those. Wish their was an easy 3D mugen like engine we could use to improve or added elements to these sega games. What do you say fellow Sega heads ? Thanks SLX keep the conversation going!
I would agree. I loved this game so much and enjoyed it much more that FV. Story mode in fighting games are overrated, I want visuals, character design and gameplay. It's a shame SEGA ignores their history
This video was fascinating! Awesome work Sega Lord X! I only played this game maybe twice at the arcade, yet somehow nearly 30 years later I still remember it so well. The first time I saw Last Bronx, the arcade cabinet was surrounded by onlookers because there were these two older guys having a blast playing against each other. They must’ve mastered each character because they made this gameplay look so good! The moves they executed really showed a style and depth that other fighting games at the time just didn’t have. And then of course after they leave I go on to play it and I suck so bad haha. It was just too difficult for me. I probably ended up blowing off the rest of my quarters on House of The Dead
The Last Bronx was definitely one of my favorite fighter games. Underrated as hell with VF, Street Fighter, Tekken, and DOA taking the spotlight in the crowded fighter's market of the 90s.
Like most other commenters, I thought Last Bronx was severely underrated. It looked and moved so well, and the environments and characters were weird and interesting. I would kill to see a subtitles version of that movie - it looks hilariously cheesetastic.
Only saw Last Bronx once, in arcade in London, Queen's Way. Bought it on Saturn. It was quite popular amongst my friends. I think you were a little hard on the Saturn version, it's a miracle and looks significantly better than Virtua Fighter 2 and Fighting Vipers. It's easily one of the greatest arcade ports, being difficult to tell at a glance if it's arcade or not despite the 3d backgrounds being replaced with 2D, just done using extremely clever and impressive perspective tricks.
I recall picking this up complete for the Saturn along with complete copies of Nights with the 3d controller and Panzer Dragoon Saga and a few other titles all for less than £30!! Those were the days. The guy had Panzer Dragoon Saga in the window for £5. Safe to say the very next morning I was there ready for opening time!
I had this game, and like you mentioned as the draw back for it, that without context to the characters or story, I felt zero connection with the characters or story. I remember trading this gem in. Wish I could have appreciated it more for what it was
Wow! This brings back memories, but the real crazy thing is that I noticed the promo for Crystal Geyser water at the 6:00 mark. That’s what I call smooth marketing. Subtle and tasteful.
ooohh my god!!! my childhood game. I remember I was in awe with the graphics and animation of this game when it came out back then. This and Xevious 3D
I learned about LAST BRONX through a Sega Saturn/PlayStation comparison video. If you are a person coming from Hi Score Girl’s second season, LAST BRONX was featured in one of the episodes.
I was - and still am - a HUGE SEGA fan, having collected all my favorite Japanese Saturn and Dreamcast games the past 8 years while living in Tokyo. But Last Bronx never appealed to me, it lacked the charm and attention to detail I had come to expect from all SEGA titles, it simply didn't have the magic of the Virtua Fighter series or Fighting Vipers for that matter. (and the background graphics were mediocre to put it nicely.) Keep up your great work Sega Lord X, love your channel!!!!
This brought me back to versus battlecast's episode showcasing last bronx. The skill they pulled off and the depth they went uncovering the game was incredible. Glad you covered this game too. Pity you didn't contacted trojan x to see if he would have time to help you with the vid. :D lol. I'm sure he is too busy anyway as his gaming show ended in 6 episodes. *sigh... Oh yeah, I think you were a little harsh on the Sega Saturn version. What they did was absolutely incredible and a more technical feat than Virtua Fighter 2. Absolutely amazing graphics.
You'd think Fighters Megamix 2 would be a no brainer. I mean it could have dozens of Sega IP's represented and be light hearted and fun. I mean its just money Sega refuses to collect.
Yeah, but we know Sega ain't putting money into anything that doesn't have Sonic on it. That's why I think Fighters mega mix would he our only hope. Lol.
Sega lord X .... thank u for including the intro in this video, it is such a nice move, i really loved the video back in my days.....i played it on Pc and it looked better than the saturn version, but as u said, it was cryptic, i had no idea how to unlock the red guy (i know he is the brother of one of the females in the game) , but it was a great game, sadly, not even sega had love for it, the game never go a 3DFX/DIRECT 3D patch even, but we loved it, it has a cult following until today and i still have my copy. p.s: i am sure the Sai is , while not a bladed weapon, a really dangerous one......
I played the PC version endlessly ... loved the gameplay. Our PCs were underpowered so we ended up playing in it in slow-motion. This ended up being fun as we were able to suss out all the weird combos.
This is amazing. I've actually played in the full cabinet version here in the U.S! There was a small arcade inside the BX at Nellis AFB back in the 90's; it always had the newest Japanese fighting cabinets because a lot of the guys on the base had just come back from Japan/Asia, so they made quite a bit of dough in these machines.
I got this game for Christmas 97, but I never really gave it the time it deserved. I was expecting to get the same feeling that VF2 and FV gave me, but LB just never grabbed me for some reason. It was also disappointing to have so few unlockables after the brilliant Fighters Megamix.
I also got into Last Bronx because of the Saturn port, where I learned that the AI was stupidly easy as soon as I played the Model 2 version, lol. Great video showing off its strengths, but I'd also add the universal guard cancel system helped the game immensely, as it kept you in your feet and protected you at the last second. Yoko is my favorite character to play, and I like Mikey a lot too.
I even bought a sega mini modded sega dreamcast modded both complete library and sega saturn will be this week 🤘 all because of u man keep the videos coming i watch all your stuff during 1 hour of cardio at gym
Recently SLX churn out quality vids almost every week. My first 32-bit console was the Sega saturn and I was the few resistance in the class room. Every other kids were boasting about how powerful their 'brand new sony playstation's 3D capability'. We don't know shit about bits and 3d polygon thing though. Respect from South Korea.
I still play this game on the Sega Saturn to this day a great underrated 3d game for its time games like this had to compete with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat and Tekken and name just a few who knows maybe it will make a come back one day like Nights into Dreams did on the Wii.
Thumps up for your Arcade Spotlight Series and your very fine high quality content. Here in Germany there was no real Arcade culture because of the stupid pseudo Child protecting Laws back in the Das, but your Series doing great to tell about all this gems. I also really like the fact that your language is clear an understandable for me as a non native English speaker, I often have problems with that on other channels. When that guys are speaking to fast or something. Greetings from Pal Region Germany. Hope for more content, I'll catch you next time.
Damn Germany sounds like such square and no fun allowed type of culture. And still somehow Germans as people can be such fun loving people. I don't know what i would have done without arcade machines, it was my hang out place, where i got to know all my friends, one of the most important places in my life.
@@franciscor390 in my small hometown there were 2 video Stores that have 2 or 3 Arcade Machines standing there. I remember playing Final Fight, Double Dragon and Vendetta there. I only know real Arcade Halls from Vacation in Italy. I was blowin away by the number of machines there standing right in front of the beach. I was more in the Arcades playing as on the beach. My favorite was the 1994 Capcom AvP Game. That was so cool. I like to play this on emulator till today.
@@unrealjesk00o Whoa at least you got to play some real good arcade games, yeah i love Capcom's AvP, it's a gorgeous game, with the awesome street fighter type input moves. You probably already know about it but the Capcom dungeons and dragon's games are amazing, specially the second.
@@franciscor390 yes of course, it's in my fav list on recalbox, 4 Player coop ftw. I also recommend Night Slasher or the Bucky o Hare side scrolling beat them up / shooter.
Sega was so far ahead of it's competition at this time, Sega ended up competing with each other on different continents. Maybe the last Bronx was sign for Sega imminent future. BTW: Before the Sonic movie, they showed individual Sega IPs in the Sega Logo. The chills I got being a hardcore Sega fan. SLX poetically reminds Sega fans and gamers alike that Sega was the main innovative force behind the video game industry as we know it today.
Now i realize that soul calibur characters on dremcast where "inspired" on this last bronx..some moves and "tools" are the same .... the character with the hammer ...etc.
Unlikely considering Soul Calibur is a sequel to Soul Edge which released in 1995. Around 6 months or so before Last Bronx released. The "hammer" character you're probably thinking of is Astaroth who actually uses an axe and is based off of Rock from Soul Edge. Nearly all of the weapon styles and movesets present in Soul Calibur already existed in Soul Edge.
@@M.Bipson i guess you are right ...yes...i love soul calibur if you have those games you can compare ..the moves and the weapons you have sophitia and kilik on last bronx etc ...looks alike..big hug from argentina.
I had never even heard of Last Bronx until I saw it in magazines. I loved it on my Saturn, and was impressed with the use of the VDP2 chip and the high resolution. I liked that they tried something different by using weapons. Since I didn't ever play the arcade game (and as you said most people didn't), I didn't feel like I was missing anything from the arcade.
5:34 My Romanian ass used to play this for hours, didn't know it was *that* rare... Though mostly I used pussy strats with Lisa, just sit in the corner spamming her quick crouch attack, like a buzzsaw awaiting the logs. My only way to finish a full run of it really. Camping noob...
I bought this game at EB games not knowing what it was like and i loved it! I remembered looking for info on its story but always coming up empty, so sad
This game is up there in my top 3 Sega fighting games! It's such a shame it never saw a sequel, or even a remaster? Come on Sega... Give us a last bronx remaster? This and fighters mega mix (another unappreciated gem of a fighter!)
I actually remember seeing this in video game magazines and game rental stores. Sadly, the magazines convinced me that this game was kinda mediocre (UUUUUUGH REVIEWERS IN THE 90s!!!). This game looks so cool and deep and I had access too it.
It was just mediocre at best. Virtua Fighter was the game to master, I especially loved VF3 with the added tilted level design, it was the top of the series. It became bland with 4 and 5, wanted more of 3. AM3 is the king of racers though.
@@DraganBlom Not true Last Bronx is a very technical and deep fighting game, the feeling you get of investing time into learning all techniques is incredibly rewarding. It also pawed the way and became a blue print for how to do weapons based fighting games like Soul Calibur.
Wow, I haven't heard about Last Bronx in almost 20 years (although funnily enough it has a small feature in this month's Retro Gamer). I had no idea about all the extra media, thanks for getting some footage.
When I played most fighting games I LOATHE the block button. But not here. This has to be the only Sega style fighting game I not only like but love, block button and all. Those story checked made me want to see everything in this game too. I've rarely gotten into many fighting games the way I did with this one.
Did you know in the UK newspaper the Daily star in 97 had a Sega Page 3 cross over in which Female dressed Page 3 girls like Lisa from Last Bronx and Janet from virtua Cop would be Top less? I remeber buying the paper just for them but cannot find them online anywhere
Never heard of this before and it actually looks pretty interesting. If there has ever been another fighting game with a character wielding a sansetsukon, I certainly haven't heard of it. The anime for this probably isn't that good, but I might try to find it and check it out.
In 1997 I imported the Japanese version for my SEGA SATURN. It came with a bonus disc( though 2nd disc was in so much Japanese text that I could not play it well ). It also came with a poster and some stickers. Go YOKO!!!
Last Bronx was always one of those games that looked really cool to me, but I didn't even know it existed until long after the PS2 was out. Whenever this does get a SEGA AGES release, I will definitely pick up as soon as I can, and I'd love to check out the manga and some of the external material, too :D
If without Soul Edge or Soul Blade (which came in the Arcades first), we can't play some Last Bronx. You can respect for Sega and AM3 for that kickass weapon-based fighter.
Your revelation that Last Bronx was a full multimedia entertainment franchise in Japan was shocking! You're right that I'd always thought LB was just some low effort, generic game from Sega. But now I realize that they were actually trying really hard to make LB a big deal. We just had no sense of that in America at the time and the internet was still too small to get the word out.
I first played this on the saturn when I was like 10 or 11 can't remember lol but I do remember that my friend brought his Saturn over and saw that opening and was kinda hyped.... but honestly I didnt even know it had a real story until I watched this video I just remembered the endings really to me didn't make no sense at all.... crazy thing is I was just thinking about this game a couple days ago
This game is the very first 3D fighting game I’ve ever played as well as my very first and most favorite Sega Saturn game. I wish we had an HD version of Last Bronx on PS3 and Xbox 360 instead of Sonic The Fighters.
I've still got the PC version of this game. It was one of my favourite games when it came out. The last time I tried to play it, was around 2018 but the speed at which the game runs is dependent upon the CPU's clock speed and that makes it completely unplayable on modern hardware. I've been thinking of trying it on Linux or in a WinME/2K virtual box but haven't gotten round to it.
Sega released this to compete with Soul Edge. By the time Last Bronx was released, it was mostly ignored in the US. Virtua Fighter 2 was by far Sega’s most popular arcade fighter in 95-96 and seemed to all but disappear once Tekken 2 arrived. To be fair, the mid to late 90s arcade scene was made up of tons of fighting games. Between Cps2 and NeoGeo hardware, it was hard enough to keep up with releases let alone from other companies like Midway and Atari. When you add that to the Namco and Sega fighters, it’s very easy for new IPs to be overlooked. Though I enjoyed Last Bronx in the arcade (only ever saw it in one arcade off Beach BLVD in HB CA) and purchased it at the end of August in 97 for my Saturn, my friends would rather play 8 month old Soul Blade.
Last Bronx was rather underrated and, it's a shining example of the big trend in Japan during the 90's of the mixed-media approach to marketing (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 90's OVA, Manga & Game are another great example of this practice!) that essentially predates the viral marketing of the 00's in the U.S. and, the social media approach used over the last decade in general. Had they applied the same approach outside Japan with Last Bronx things may have gone a little better.. But it's always gonna be a niche game, one that is much better than it's general reputation for sure though.
This game is definitely underappreciated. I never knew there was a anime and a movie for it.
The anime bit was a mistake. It was a serialized radio show. My mistake.
@@SegaLordX Oh, ok. No problem. Thanks.
Ditto man, never knew it was BIG in Japan and that it had other media. Thanks for revealing these details!

I even bought a sega mini modded sega dreamcast modded both complete library and sega saturn will be this week 🤘 all because of u man keep the videos coming i watch all your stuff during 1 hour of cardio at gym
Just got this over the weekend
Fast, Loud, and Unintelligible - welcome to America. Sorry for the rest of the mongoloids over here, but at least we can be proud of this channel.
Yeah, Sega was definitely ahead of a time. I don't think we (the public) were ready for it.
@arbereshe Segas developers could afford to be innovative and take chances during it's reign. The video game market became stagnant without Sega.
I loved this game.
Now i realize that soul calibur characters on dremcast where "inspired" on this last bronx..some moves and "tools" are the same .... the character with the hammer ...etc.
Samurai Shodown was the first weapons based fighter imo.
I have the PC Port of Last Bronx and it is a great game! The story mode and video cut scenes is awesome
Loved this game! Got it as soon as it was out on Saturn back in the day.
I used to play this game a lot on the Sega Saturn.🎮 Yasaku was my favorite fighter.
I noticed this game has a lot of ad placement in it.
It did, much of it real products.
GattlingCombo Those articles were written either by dumb people or by FTG haters. This game is a truly underappreciated gem.
Yeah, I've learned something over the years..."professional" reviewers are more interested in writing pretty and they kind of suck at reviewing. ;)
I missed out on this, but damn I want to play it after hearing a bit of that Saturn era style Sega music.
Last Bronx. The best 3D fighter on the Saturn. Seriously. This game is GOOOD.
Wow, I haven't heard about Last Bronx in almost 20 years (although funnily enough it has a small feature in this month's Retro Gamer). I had no idea about all the extra media, thanks for getting some footage.
Completely forgot about this game! Had it on the Saturn as a child, cheers!
When I played most fighting games I LOATHE the block button. But not here. This has to be the only Sega style fighting game I not only like but love, block button and all. Those story checked made me want to see everything in this game too. I've rarely gotten into many fighting games the way I did with this one.
This game looks dope. Definately gonna have to pick this one up.
Such a great game. Thanks for the video SLX!
No problem. :)
This game gives me serious TWEWY Vibes and I love it
Excellent content as usual!
I remember playing Last Bronx on my PC back in the day! another amazing video SLX, keep em’ coming!👍
Thank you. I will surely try. :)
How I loved this game on the Saturn! And how happy I'd be for a remaster!
Thanks, just found my new home arcade holy grail
When I was in my teens, I use to buy all the PC Sega games in those big white boxes. Last Bronx is a somewhat tricky game to make work on modern PCs.
Always heard good things about this one but it looks fun. Too bad I missed it
Did you know in the UK newspaper the Daily star in 97 had a Sega Page 3 cross over in which Female dressed Page 3 girls like Lisa from Last Bronx and Janet from virtua Cop would be Top less? I remeber buying the paper just for them but cannot find them online anywhere
Another 3D great fighting game from Sega in the 90's
So what you're saying is if I see this game for $50 Canadian I should pick it up?! 🤔
Never heard of this before and it actually looks pretty interesting. If there has ever been another fighting game with a character wielding a sansetsukon, I certainly haven't heard of it. The anime for this probably isn't that good, but I might try to find it and check it out.
Played the crap out of this game on my Pentium IV back in 2000. Hard mode almost make me broke the keyboard on many occasions
was playing this game in the 2005s...was incredible. cant wait for my potato to run it and
Interesting game. I like the product placement in the Arcade version.
In 1997 I imported the Japanese version for my SEGA SATURN. It came with a bonus disc( though 2nd disc was in so much Japanese text that I could not play it well ). It also came with a poster and some stickers. Go YOKO!!!
Thank you for bringing this to the light. Too bad other fighting games has shadow. This one :-( or it could have had a Sega Dreamcast release.
Last Bronx was always one of those games that looked really cool to me, but I didn't even know it existed until long after the PS2 was out. Whenever this does get a SEGA AGES release, I will definitely pick up as soon as I can, and I'd love to check out the manga and some of the external material, too :D
Some stage backgrounds appear to be from Virtua Cop 1. I just noticed that
God I love this channel intro...
I liked this game on Saturn
I have the Japanese version for my Saturn with an extra disc and some extra features . It runs on an improved VF2 engine . Very cool game!!
We just had no sense of that in America at the time and the internet was still too small to get the word out.
if ever we get a Saturn Mini console, i hope this game will be in it. i really wish i had it on my Saturn back in the day.
This game is one of the best 2.5D fighting games I've played! The Pal version, while being slower, is WAY harder than the original version.
I first played this on the saturn when I was like 10 or 11 can't remember lol but I do remember that my friend brought his Saturn over and saw that opening and was kinda hyped.... but honestly I didnt even know it had a real story until I watched this video I just remembered the endings really to me didn't make no sense at all.... crazy thing is I was just thinking about this game a couple days ago
so basically Sega's version of Soul Blade.. looks awesome!
This game is the very first 3D fighting game I’ve ever played as well as my very first and most favorite Sega Saturn game.
I wish we had an HD version of Last Bronx on PS3 and Xbox 360 instead of Sonic The Fighters.
You mean, Sonic Championship? That’s the Fighting Vipers-inspired fighter.
New Gabe Order that’s right. I wonder who thought that releasing this game in HD would be a good idea.
I wanna play this so bad. They already got me hooked with Virtua Fighter with Ultimate Showdown, more Sega fighter love for the world
I've still got the PC version of this game.
Woot!
Awesome game 👏🎮
Last Bronx was rather underrated and, it's a shining example of the big trend in Japan during the 90's of the mixed-media approach to marketing (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure 90's OVA, Manga & Game are another great example of this practice!) that essentially predates the viral marketing of the 00's in the U.S. and, the social media approach used over the last decade in general. Had they applied the same approach outside Japan with Last Bronx things may have gone a little better.. But it's always gonna be a niche game, one that is much better than it's general reputation for sure though.
Dead or Alive dropped in 1996. Nothing compared to that in the arcades, us horny Bois where 2 and 3 deep around the cabinets.
