Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, there was a small 2nd floor arcade on 149th in The Bronx. There were two games I used to play there on a regular basis: WWF Wrestlemania, and Last Bronx. I used to main as Yusagu and Joe. The arcade closed down around 2001. Two years later, when I got my first laptop, a used IBM ThinkPad 600, I bought a couple of discount PC titles, and one of them was the Sega PC port of Last Bronx. Man, I had so much fun.
The whole idea behind the game is a territorial gang war. A new crew, Redrum, has started battling the other established gangs. Yoko’s brother was kidnapped and turned into Redeye (as you found out by beating the game as her). Yusagu, Joe, and Zaimoku (the dude with the hammer), used to be in the same crew until Redrum murdered their leader. Subsequently, the three split into their own factions. The idea behind the game is for each of the gangs (represented by each playable character) to battle for dominance over Neo Tokyo. And every character has their final grudge match.
Btw, NEVER underestimate Zaimoku. He’s the fastest tank you’ll ever face in a fighting game.
Surprisingly, PCSX2 underwent some significant improvements as of late, and among them are improving the sega ages ports to a very much playable state
The big bridge is supposed to be Rainbow Bridge and it is a very famous landmark in Tokyo.
The Arcade and PC versions had full polygon backgrounds. It's debatable as to which looks better today.
Strangely, I too like alot of chicks wielding Tonfa's:
-Maki from Final Fight
-Tracy from Battle Arena Toshinden
-Yoko from Last Bronx
Tanya from Mortal Kombat?
@@madmaxandrade alot but not all; Tanya's early designs never clicked with me...plus she was a villain =P
Talim from soul Calibur?!¿ Nani
Me, I love chicks with eye patches
Talim from Soul Calibur
Sega should atleast make a 3d Fighting Game Collection than Another Genesis Collection.
Collection..? Sega needs to make a comeback sega console
Fun Fact: The "translated" lyrics in the intro are made up, and from what I know, the "translated" cutscene dialogues are like in the same boat.
Oh my God I knew it, I was really struggling trying to figure out how the hell those subtitles corresponded with anything
I always knew something was up. Especially with yokos ending.
🤯
Oh wow J.A.L plane in the background is awesome! In my hometown when you got to 6th grade J.A.L took the class on a quick flight and talked about the plane and you even got a real ticket. It was awesome! They used our local airport so I guess it was their way of saying thanks. Good times. Crazy what will take you back there.
As a native Brooklynite that name is crazy.
Hahaha facts
All these battles took place on 3rd Ave 🤣
@@uptown710 Ayo... 😆
very wild that a game called Last *BRONX* is set in Tokyo
I loved this on my Saturn. An unbelievable close conversion considering the gap in hardware to the arcade.
Jackie Chan was at his peak in the 80s and 90s and Rumble in the Bronx was popular internationally. I think the developer just loved the word.
Holy smokes!! This game was installed on our family computer and I’d forgotten the name for like TWO DECADES. This is surreal
Mentioning Tracy from Toshinden 2 awakened a core sense memory.
I think Lisa has escrima/arnis sticks as opposed to tonfa like Yoko
this is completely unrelated but in Castlevania: Circle of the Moon you can change your weapon to a pair of tonfas but the English version of the game refers to them as "tonfers"
With a name like that, no wonder why Sega ignore it because it doesn't have the word "Fight" on the title, I mean:
Virtua Fighter
Fighting Vipers
Fighters Megamix
Sonic The Fighters
Last Bronx...
Yeah, sounds like the black sheep of the Sega's fighting games, lol!.
Anytime Battle Construction Vehicles is referenced my month is salvaged.
My guess with this one was they mistook the meaning of "Rumble" for "Bronx". Side Note: I will always love the gorgeous Vancouver North Shore Mountains in the back ground in Rumble in the Bronx. What are those supposed to be, the Catskills?
Mine is that they probably assumed "a bronx" was a general term for a rough neighborhood instead of a specific place. This game have that street territorial gang war in the future going on.
The game has a very cool mechanic where you can cancel parts of a string with G. This let's you extend combos and go for mix ups.
You don't understand Matt, in the future NY has perished. As it lay dying, its brother in arms NeoTokyo was there. With its dying breath, NY passed the name of its favorite neighborhood, Bronx to its pal NeoTokyo, and so begins the story of Last Bronx.
Hands down one of the best fighting games of all time, and it gets zero love. It's been about 25 years since I had a Sega Saturn, but I'd buy one all over again just for this game
The main issue with last Bronx on PCSX2 was using hardware mode left it black and white, but a little while back in a nightly this was fixed! The new PCSX2 stable build should have this now
You can get last Bronx in 4k with excellent performance!
If Someone would make a Last Bronx Sequel, call it Last Queens.
I still have my SEGA Saturn copy!
This is one my favorite games in the Saturn actually.
I had this on my Sega Saturn but lost it and a bunch of my consoles and games after I graduated highschool and left for the military. At the time, the fighting felt good and I loved alot of game mechanics, like jump off the wall. This era saw alot of weapons fighting games, Soul Edge, Battle Arena, Last Bronx, etc. and not many survived 😑
As a weapons-based fighter without _any_ fantasy elements whatsoever, Last Bronx actually stands out quite a bit.
The 90's Japanese punk aesthetic doesn't hurt, either.
19:45 either the story was contained in the manual with only few bit and pieces in the game, or you're supposed to play the different characters to piece together what's going on. or there's some sort of special conditions to get the true ending.
@@emperormegaman3856 Both. The main story is in the manual, and each character's ending pieces the entire story together.
@@Diggy22 As expected from a game of this era.
When it comes to Last Bronx, I think the translation might be a bit wonky in a few places, too.
I ♥ Last Bronx! Nagi is my main since day 1.
If you squint hard enough, one of those stages kinda looks like grand concourse. 😂
Gotta love the random BCV reference. What a game.
I've always wanted to get a copy of this game for my Japanese Saturn ...mainly because the artist behind blue sub number 6 and last exile worked on it! However, over the years there's always some straggler who outbid me on eBay by $5 to $ 10 at the last minute!😢
That is one of my favorite fighting games back in the day. I still have it. That intro song was hittin! Lol
Matt you cannot drop a BCV: Battle Construction Vehicle reference like that without warning, I get shocks remembering the KENDO CRANE TECH
Waiting for this to show up in Like A Dragon
KOF99 has a nice airport stage as well (but not naked lol)
I rented this a few times from Blockbuster! The anime intro gave me some crazy flashbacks!
Ooh, nice. I've always been fixated on this fighter since I saw it in the arcade and frustrated by how much it's been ignored by Sega.
This game looks kinda hype, not gonna lie
This doesn’t look too bad at all. Looks a lot better than Virtua fighter ever did.
Coming out almost 4 years later than the original VF will do that, yeah.
There is a direct-to-video LAST BRONX movie with live actors and it is completely insane, it's on RUclips and if you jump to the 1:13:00 mark You will see them do a live action air combo juggle, I lost my shit
😮
Added to watchlist!
I really liked this game man, i VASTLY prefer it to Fighting Vipers. I played the heck out of it on the Saturn back in the day.
I only like fighting vipers because of PEPSIMAN!
Other than that last Bronx is BASED!
Do you have a favorite charecter in last Bronx?
@@calebpribyl5152As a kid it was always Kurosawa, I just thought he looked so cool and badass lol. Nowadays tho whenever I do go back and play this I tend to use Yoko and Joe the most honestly.
Sooooo underrated! I Played the hell out of the PC Version!
The PC port of this game was good. It had very hefty PC requirements at the time though due to no 3d acceleration. It also only runs on Windows 9x.
I want to say this looks like something I saw in a long-ago issue of GamePro, but I can't remember. I do like Yoko's outfit and weapons though, and if this game had a remake I'd give it a try.
Lisa out there using the Daredevil twin pipes
When Yujiro Hanma took up nunchucks that weren't made of Baki.
I vaguely remember this game. It honestly looks pretty good for the time.
Thank you so much for giving Last Bronx a try! It's my all time favorite game and has so much more going for it. imo a very underrated game...
Yoko is top obscure fighting game waifus (never gonna say that again)
¿Forgotten fighting franchises from creators?, try "Psychic Force" from "Taito".
Yusaku looks so much like Axel Stone that it hurts....in a "GRAND UPPAH" to the chin kind of way (Which is good).
"BARE KNUCKLE!"
*Yoyo Yoko From Erghiez*
Would you tackle:
A few Fighters Megamix courses 😅
I played a ton of this game. It's a shame it did not get a second, more modern installment.
I found a copy of Last Bronx for PC months ago and haven't tried to find an emulator. I feel so lazy.
one of my favorite fighters on the saturn
I genuinely believe that if this game had sequels, I would've liked it as a series better than Soul Calibur, this game is literally the best one-off game ever.
I had the saturn version of this game. Easily my favorite 3d fighter at the time. I still wish Sega would makea sequel or remake of this. Yoko was my main.
I actually had the PC version! It was so fun
I still play this from time to time 😀
This is like rumble in the bronx the video game?
Lisa had whats called kali sticks and its not 3 pipes it's called a 3 piece nunchuck also the lusty subway was not lusty at all total let down 😂
It's actually called a 3 sectioned staff. Notb3 piece nunchaku....
OK looking it up after work.
MORE than Virtua Fighter?!
Lisa makes me think Eagle.
I remain hopeful that if they ever do a Yakuza fighting game, they add in Last Bronx characters, they'd fit right in.
Tommy looks like Denny
"The series Sega ignores more than Virtua Fighter!"
Here's a solution: if Virtua Fighter 6 ever gets announced, the devs should at least add one or two Last Bronx characters to its roster (including Fighting Vipers). Also, I really hope it's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio that develops VF6, they have done an amazing job with VF5 Ultimate Showdown.
Oh they knew exactly what the hell they were doing when they put in 2 characters named Tommy and Lisa. They're practically asking for the "YOU ARE TEARING ME APART, LISA!" meme to be put here. Or at least that's what I would adamantly imply if not for the fact that this game came out 7 years before The Room manifested. But nowadays that certainly wouldn't stop anybody from making the reference. And yeah I know Tommy Wiseau's character in that movie was actually named Johnny, but nobody ever calls him that, even in context.
Someone please sub the LA direct to VHS movie. I wanna hear Matt talk about it.
We need Last St. Catherine.(?)
Yo Matt, you probably know it, but you should check out Metro Siege, a modern amiga beat em up. It looks pretty neat.
Supposedly this game use to cause seizures. I read an article about it sometime ago.
I wish it wasn't the Last Bronx. It should've been the First Bronx of many.
All they needed was Mark and they'd have a The Room trifecta.
I don't think a game with no sequel or prequel is considered a series. Virtua Fighter, Fighting Vipers, Eternal Champions, Sonic; those are series. Last Bronx, not so much.
What up
Sky
Last what now?

@@BlaccCeaza Like Megaman X?
@@Average_Brad exactly like that🤣
I dunno... Either Yoko is extremely underpowered or Zaimoku is overpowered. Two of Yoko's combo chains roughly equals three attacks from Zaimoku...
You can't be My My My My Sharona!
Drake the kind of guy to eat the last Bronx.
What?
Eternal champions isn't more ignored?
No, it had several spin offs, two main games, and the first game got several re-releases on various sega compilations.
